To assess the pattern of multiple human papillomavirus infection to predict the type replacement postvaccination. A total of 7372 women aged 18-45y from a phase III trial of an Escherichia coli -produced HPV-16/18 vaccine were analyzed at enrollment visit before vaccination. Hierarchical multilevel logistic regression was used to evaluate HPV vaccine type and nonvaccine-type interactions with age as a covariate. Binary logistic regression was construed to compare multiple infections with single infections to explore the impact of multiple-type infections on the risk of cervical disease. Multiple HPV infections were observed in 25.2% of HPV-positive women and multiple infections were higher than expected by chance. Statistically significant negative associations were observed between HPV16 and 52, HPV18 and HPV51/52/58, HPV31 and HPV39/51/52/53/54/58, HPV33 and HPV52/58, HPV58 and HPV52, HPV6 and HPV 39/51/52/53/54/56/58. Multiple HPV infections increased the risk of CIN2+ and HSIL+, with the ORs of 2.27(95%CI: 1.41, 3.64) and 2.26 (95%CI: 1.29, 3.95) for multiple oncogenic HPV infection separately. However, no significant evidence for the type-type interactions on risk of CIN2+ or HSIL+. There is possibility of type replacement between several pairs of vaccine and nonvaccine HPV type. Multiple HPV infection increased the risk of cervical disease, but coinfection HPV types seem to follow independent disease processes. Continued post-vaccination surveillance for HPV 51/52/58 types and HPV 39/51 types separately was essential after the first and second generation of HPV vaccination implementation in China.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections associated with a wide range of diseases and cancers that may affect both genders. Since 2007, the Spanish National Immunization Program includes HPV vaccination, and currently it only targets 12-year-old girls. The objective of our study is to assess differences in the knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccine acceptability according to different factors, and to identify the role of different sources of information. A cross-sectional, multicenter survey research was carried out in twenty-four pediatric offices in Spain, and included parents of children aged 9 to 14 years old. 1,405 valid survey-responses were considered for the analysis. Parental awareness of HPV and HPV vaccine, as well as vaccine acceptability, are still strongly associated with child gender (girls) and age (12-14 years old). HPV knowledge and HPV vaccine acceptability are related to parental gender, HPV vaccination status and having at least one daughter. Parents who consulted a healthcare source to obtain further information about HPV had greater HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge and acceptability. HPV and HPV vaccine awareness and acceptability are strongly associated with child gender and age, which correlates with the current immunization program.

Reminders are an important method for encouraging patients to return for follow-up visits, such as for successive doses of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. However, patients may have preferences for different types of reminders. This study examined which reminder methods parents of pediatric patients found most useful and their thoughts on how the reminders helped them to complete their children's HPV vaccine series. This qualitative study was conducted on a purposively sampled group of parents who participated in a multi-level intervention intended to improve uptake and completion of the HPV vaccine series. Parents who agreed to participate were interviewed by phone using semi-structured interviews about their satisfaction with different program components, including reminders they received. Interviews were conducted between May 26, 2016 and October 18, 2017. Thematic analyses of data were conducted using NVivo software. Among 269 program participants invited to participate in the interviews, 157 agreed (58.4%) and 89 were successfully interviewed (33.1%). Participants thought that reminders were effective at helping them return for follow-up visits to ensure their children received all recommended HPV vaccine doses. Although most parents preferred texts, many also favored other reminder methods by themselves or in combination with texts. Parents suggested that the reminders indicate the purpose of the appointment and for which child. Reminders are an important part of a multi-component intervention that aims to increase completion of the HPV vaccine series. Program enrollees prefer different types of reminders, so offering several options may improve returns for follow-up doses.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Some countries have incorporated MSM into their HPV vaccination strategies. The acceptance of the HPV vaccine is an important factor affecting vaccine promotion in MSM. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing HPV vaccination willingness among MSM in China. Non-probability sampling was used to recruit MSM in China in June 2021. The information collected included demographic characteristics, HPV knowledge, attitude, behavior, history of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and HPV vaccination intention. A structural equation model was used to analyze the data based on the theory of knowledge-attitude-behavior. Among 889 participants, 736 (82.79%) of the MSM were willing to receive the HPV vaccine. The results of the structural equation model showed that knowledge, attitude, behavior, and STD history influenced the vaccination intention, of which knowledge (total effect of .36) and attitude (total effect of .31) had the greatest influence. Since most MSM in China were willing to be vaccinated against HPV, they should be considered for inclusion in the HPV vaccination program. Enhancing HPV awareness and improving risk awareness may be useful in increasing the vaccination willingness of MSM in China.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women, particularly those who are living with HIV, are disproportionately affected by human papillomavirus (HPV). For this narrative review of HPV health outcomes and vaccination for gay, bisexual, and other MSM and transgender women in the United States, we highlighted 71 publications regarding 1) burden of HPV infections and related diseases; 2) HPV vaccine efficacy; 3) HPV vaccination recommendations; 4) HPV vaccination coverage; 5) real-world vaccine effectiveness and health impacts; and 6) HPV vaccination acceptability. Vaccination is effective at reducing HPV infections among MSM; in the United States, routine HPV vaccination is recommended for all adolescents at age 11-12 years and for all persons through age 26 years. Efforts are ongoing to increase vaccination coverage and monitor health impacts of vaccination. Increasing vaccination coverage before sexual exposure to HPV is expected to reduce the burden of HPV-related disease.

This study aimed to investigate nursing students' perspectives regarding the role of nurses as HPV vaccine advocates and their perception of barriers to advocacy. A cross-sectional study using a Web-based survey was sent out to all undergraduate nursing students enrolled at the Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou, China. A total of 1,041 students responded to the survey. In total, 58.0% of students expressed an intent to advocate HPV vaccines as a counselor and 56.4% as an HPV information provider in their future practice. However, 33.4% stated that they do not intend to be HPV vaccine advocates. Grade 1 students, students from homes with higher annual household incomes and those with a higher level of knowledge about HPV and HPV vaccination expressed higher intentions to advocate for HPV vaccines as a counselor. Students who have a higher level of knowledge about HPV and HPV vaccination and have received HPV vaccines reported a higher advocacy intent in the provision of HPV information. The main perceived barriers in HPV vaccine advocacy include inadequate training (87.1%) and insufficient HPV-related knowledge (84.8%); also, anxious patients may not feel comfortable with nurses discussing HPV vaccination (52.8%). Nurses are uniquely positioned to nurture patient HPV vaccine acceptance and maybe the key strategy to increase HPV vaccination coverage in China. Institutional support is needed to train nurses as HPV vaccine advocates and should focus on enhancing HPV-related knowledge while destigmatising the embarrassment around discussing HPV-related issues with patients.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world, with the ability to cause external genital warts and cancers. The HPV vaccine, first released in the United States of America (USA) in 2006, has been shown to protect against the highest risk HPV strains responsible for the majority of HPV-related cancers. In mainland China, the HPV vaccine was only recently approved in 2016 and is therefore not readily available. As a result, Chinese international students (CIS) studying in the USA continue to have low HPV vaccination rates. This study completed in person and online surveying of 396 CIS at a large Southern California university, with the goal of better understanding CIS knowledge and awareness of HPV disease, vaccination and healthcare behaviors, and sexual activity. Among participants, the reported HPV vaccination rate was 61% (females: 85%; males: 32%). HPV vaccination was significantly correlated with a past visit to the on-campus student health center, having university-sponsored student health insurance, higher self-perceived HPV knowledge, and increased willingness to pay for vaccination. A large portion of participants portrayed low levels of sexual activity, which suggests that CIS can take advantage of catch-up HPV vaccination recommendations through 26 years of age. The results of this study can be used to inform policy initiatives, particularly at the campus level, that attempt to improve HPV vaccination rates amongst CIS.

This article describes a patient who developed Harada disease-like uveitis after quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV4) vaccination and experienced resolution without any systemic treatment. To achieve this aim, a case report and a review of related literature on HPV vaccination causing uveitis were conducted. The results of this study show a diagnosis of Harada disease-like uveitis after HPV4 vaccination based on the vaccination history, clinical symptoms, and multimodal imaging. Resolution without any systemic corticosteroid treatment was observed. According to these findings, patients may develop uveitis with Harada-like features, which can be a mild and self-limiting process, after HPV4 vaccination.

Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates are low in young adults. Clinical decision support (CDS) in primary care may increase HPV vaccination. We tested the treatment effect of algorithm-driven, web-based, and electronic health record-linked CDS with or without shared decision-making tools (SDMT) on HPV vaccination rates compared to usual care (UC)., Methods: In a clinic cluster-randomized control trial conducted in a healthcare system serving a largely rural population, we randomized 34 primary care clinic clusters (with three clinics sharing clinicians randomized together) to: CDS; CDS+SDMT; UC. The sample included young adults aged 18-26 due for HPV vaccination with a study index visit from 08/01/2018-03/15/2019 in a study clinic. Generalized linear mixed models tested differences in HPV vaccination status 12 months after index visits by study arm., Results: Among 10,253 patients, 6,876 (65.2%) were due for HPV vaccination, and 5,054 met study eligibility criteria. In adjusted analyses, the HPV vaccination series was completed by 12 months in 2.3% (95% CI: 1.6%-3.2%) of CDS, 1.6% (95% CI: 1.1%-2.3%) of CDS+SDMT, and 2.2% (95% CI: 1.6%-3.0%) of UC patients, and at least one HPV vaccine was received by 12 months in 13.1% (95% CI: 10.6%-16.1%) of CDS, 9.2% (95% CI: 7.3%-11.6%) of CDS+SDMT, and 11.2% (95% CI: 9.1%-13.7%) of UC patients. Differences were not significant between arms. Females, those with prior HPV vaccinations, and those seen at urban clinics had significantly higher odds of HPV vaccination in adjusted models., Discussion: CDS may require optimization for young adults to significantly impact HPV vaccination., Trial Registration: clinicaltrials.gov NCT02986230, 12/6/2016.

Background: The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the primary causative agent of cervical cancer. HPV vaccination against human papillomavirus is more effective against cervical cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the knowledge and attitudes toward the human papillomavirus vaccines among female high-school students., Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted among female high-school students in Jimma town, Ethiopia. Study participants were selected using a simple random sampling method. Self-administered interviews were conducted using a structured questionnaire. Data were entered using Epi-data version 3.5, exported and analyzed using the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 21. The Chi-squared (χ2) test was performed to determine the statistical significance between the outcome variable and independent variables., Results: A total of 366 students participated in this study with a response rate of 94.8%. Only half (52.7%) and nearly one-third (31.4%) of the respondents had good knowledge and positive attitudes toward HPV vaccination, respectively. The predictors that included parents' educational status (χ2 = 1.479, P = .003), students participating in school mini-media (χ2 = 1.519, P = .036), students who had a smartphone (χ2 = 2.118, P = .008), availability of radio or television (TV) at home (χ2 = 2.163, P = .049), and students who received information from social-media (χ2 = 2.15, P = .025) were significantly associated with knowledge of the HPV vaccine., Conclusion: Overall knowledge and attitude toward HPV vaccination were low. All concerned bodies should work jointly to enhance the knowledge and attitudes of female students toward Human Papilloma Virus vaccination.

There is a high burden of human papillomavirus (HPV) associated cancers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Reducing the recommended dosing schedule from two doses to one makes the vaccine schedule logistically simpler and lowers the cost. This could make the distribution of the current vaccine supply more equitable and lead to the protection of more people. However, the clinical trials studying the efficacy of a single-dose schedule have not yet delivered final results. Against this background, the question is whether a single-dose HPV vaccine recommendation is appropriate now, and if so, what are the ethical considerations of such a recommendation? We developed three ethical recommendations: (1) adopt a holistic view of evidence to justify policy decisions; (2) prioritize the reduction in global disparities in decision-making at all levels; and (3) be transparent in the reporting of how key stakeholder interests have shaped the collection and interpretation of the evidence, and ultimate decisions. The complex discussion regarding the HPV single-dose vaccine schedule highlights the need for in-depth engagement globally to improve our understanding of country-specific contexts, and how those contexts influence decisions regarding the HPV vaccine single-dose recommendation.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) knowledge and HPV vaccination uptake remain suboptimal. We assessed sex and educational attainment differences in HPV knowledge and vaccine awareness. Data from a cross-sectional study (2018-2021) in Puerto Rico among adults aged 21-49 was analyzed ( n  = 278). Adequate knowledge was defined as a score of ≥70% of correct responses on a 13-item knowledge scale. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association of sex (men vs. women) and education (high school or less vs. more than high school) categories with adequate HPV knowledge and vaccine awareness. Adequate HPV knowledge was higher among women (53%) and men (46%) with more than high school and was lower among women (46%) and men (27%) with high school or less. For HPV vaccine awareness, similar results were observed. Women (OR = 3.0 ; 95%CI = 1.4-6.2) and men (OR = 2.3 , 95%CI = 1.1-4.8) with more than high school and women with high school or less (OR = 2.3 , 95%CI = 1.0-5.2) were more likely to have adequate HPV vaccine knowledge than men with high-school or less education. Heightened HPV vaccine awareness was also seen among more educated women and men and women with similar lower education when compared to men with ≤ high school. Men and individuals with lower educational attainment were more likely to have inadequate HPV knowledge and vaccine awareness. HPV vaccine-oriented educational interventions should target these high-risk groups.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is the simplest, most economical, convenient, and effective method of preventing cervical cancer. However, the current HPV vaccine is supplied as a single-dose vial with a relatively high cost per dose, which hinders its supply to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where the demand for HPV vaccine is highest. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a multi-dose HPV vaccine to promote large-scale affordable vaccination in LMICs. Moreover, the addition of preservatives is required to reduce the risk of microbial contamination in multi-dose vaccines within a single vial. In this study, we investigated the effects of six preservatives on HPV 16L1 and 18L1 virus-like particles in solution, as well as the aluminum adsorption status, under normal and high-temperature conditions. Multiple methods were employed, including dynamic light scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, an in vitro relative potency assay, and an in vivo potency assay in mice. Based on the above results, four types of selected preservatives were further studied, and an antimicrobial effectiveness test was performed on the HPV-2 vaccine, which was employed as a model HPV vaccine. Finally, three preservatives were selected based on their performance to evaluate the long-term stability of the HPV-2 vaccine. The results indicated that 0.12% methylparaben is the most suitable preservative for the multi-dose HPV-2 vaccine, guaranteeing the shelf life for at least three years and meeting "B" standards for antimicrobial effectiveness. The formula developed in this study can contribute toward combating cervical cancer in LMICs.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate HPV vaccination intention among adult married women aged 27 to 45 years and its associated factors, and their spouse/partner's influence on HPV vaccination decision-making., Methods: This is a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study. Study participants were recruited through simple random sampling of patients attending obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics in a university teaching hospital. Participants were selected based on a computer-generated list of a random list of patients attending the clinic., Results: A total of 794 complete responses were received (response rate 88.2%). The mean age of the respondents was 32.2 years with a standard deviation (SD) of ±3.9 years.The vast majority (85.3%) would communicate with their spouse/partner with regard to HPV vaccination decision-making. Nearly 30% (over half were of the Malay ethnic group) perceived their spouse/partner would not consent to their HPV vaccination. Over half (54.9%) reported joint decision-making, and 9.1% (the majority of whom were Malay) reported that HPV vaccination was dependent on their spouse/partner's decision. Intention to vaccinate against HPV was high (74.5%). Factors influencing HPV vaccination intention were spouse/partner's consent to HPV vaccination (odds ratio [OR] = 4.51; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.08-6.62), being a postgraduate student (OR = 4.55; 95% CI, 2.13-9.72 vs. unemployed/housewife), average household income MYR2000-4000 (OR = 2.09; 95%CI, 1.16-3.78 vs. below MYR2000), and an HPV-related knowledge score of 9-20 (OR = 1.60; 95% CI, 1.10-2.32 vs. score 0-8)., Conclusion: Findings highlight the importance of culture-centered interventions to enhance male partner's awareness and support for the HPV vaccination of married women.

Introduction: The uptake of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in France remains low. The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with the uptake of the HPV vaccine in girls aged 11-14 years in France., Methods: We conducted a telephone survey among a quota sample of 1102 mothers of 11-14-year-old daughters residing in mainland France, using the French Survey Questionnaire for the Determinants of HPV Vaccine Hesitancy (FSQD-HPVH). The dependent variable was the uptake of at least one dose of the HPV vaccine in the daughter. The independent variables included the FSQD-HPVH item variables, the Global Vaccine Confidence Index item variables, the daughter's age, and the mother's socioeconomic status., Results: Overall, 38.6% of the mothers indicated that their daughter received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine. The multivariate analysis revealed that agreeing with the statement that doctors/health care providers believe vaccinating girls against HPV was a good idea, and having asked questions to the attending doctor about HPV vaccines were associated with a higher HPV vaccine uptake (OR = 4.99 , 95% CI [2.09-11.89]; and OR = 3.44, 95% CI [2.40-4.92]). Mother's belief that her daughter was too young to be vaccinated against HPV (OR = 0.16 , 95% CI [0. 09-0.29]) and lower daughter's age (OR = 0.17 , 95% CI [0.10-0.28] for girls aged 11 compared to those aged 14) were found strongly inversely associated with HPV vaccination, followed by agreeing with the statement that the HPV vaccine was unsafe (OR = 0.42 , 95% CI [0.26-0.67]), identifying as true the statement that HPV was very rare (OR = 0.49 , 95% CI [0.31-0.77]), and the mother's refusal of own vaccination (OR = 0.57 , 95% CI [0.40-0.80])., Conclusion: We have identified important determinants associated with HPV vaccine uptake in France. Interventions designed to improve HPV vaccine uptake should be tailored to address these determinants.

Purpose: Vaccination of adolescent girls against human papillomavirus (HPV) significantly reduces the incidence of cervical cancer. HPV vaccines are available in Pakistan but plans to develop HPV vaccination program are at a nascent stage. We conducted a formative study to explore adolescent girls' knowledge and perspectives on HPV and cervical cancer and collect their recommendations for implementing an HPV vaccination program in their community., Methods: Using qualitative exploratory study design, we conducted four focus group discussions (FGDs) with 12 adolescent girls per group in District West, Karachi. We recruited unmarried girls aged 16-19 years from schools and community settings between May-December 2020. Data analysis was done using NVivo., Results: Overall, participants displayed a positive attitude toward HPV vaccine. However, they were unfamiliar with basic concepts related to female reproductive health. Female relatives were indicated as girls' preferred point of contact for discussions on HPV and cervical cancer, but fathers were portrayed as decision-making authority on vaccination. Participants indicated vaccine hesitancy among parents may affect HPV vaccination uptake. Girls suggested individual household visits and community-based camps as strategies for successful implementation of HPV vaccination program. A solid foundation of trust between girls' families, program managers, and other stakeholders emerged as a key asset for the program's success., Conclusion: Adolescent girls' suggestions of informing key decision-makers in the family (particularly fathers) of the benefits of HPV vaccination, establishing trust with vaccine providers, and increasing accessibility of vaccinations should be explored for successful implementation of an HPV vaccination program in Pakistan.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women are disproportionately affected by human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV vaccination is routinely recommended for U.S. adolescents at age 11-12 years, with catch-up vaccination through age 26 years. We assessed HPV vaccination coverage and associated factors among young MSM and transgender women. The Vaccine Impact in Men study enrolled MSM aged 18-26 years from clinics in Seattle, Chicago, and Los Angeles, during February 2016-September 2018. Participants self-reported socio-demographic information and HPV vaccination status. Among 1416 participants, 673 (47.5%) reported ≥1 HPV vaccine dose. Among vaccinated participants, median age at first dose was 19 years and median age at first sex was 17 years; 493 (73.3%) reported that their age at first dose was older than their age at first sex. There were significant differences in HPV vaccination coverage by city (range 33%-62%), age, race/ethnicity, and gender identity. Coverage was highest in Seattle, where younger age was the only factor associated with vaccination. Differences in coverage by city may be due to variation in vaccination practices or enrollment at study sites. Increasing both routine and catch-up vaccination will improve coverage among MSM and transgender women.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the US and the leading cause of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC), an oral cancer most often identified by dental providers. Given the rise in HPV-associated OPC and recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the HPV vaccine to prevent OPC, dental providers have a unique role in HPV prevention. This study assessed US adults' comfort levels discussing HPV and OPC with dental providers. An online survey platform was used to recruit a nationally representative sample of US adults (n = 300). The questionnaire assessed participants' knowledge, acceptability, and comfort discussing HPV-related topics with dental providers. SPSS 24 was utilized for data analyses. In general, participants reported feeling comfortable discussing HPV and OPC with dental providers. Participants reported feeling more comfortable with dentists than dental hygienists when discussing ( t =  2.85, p < .01) and receiving recommendations about the HPV vaccine ( t = 2.09, p < .05). Participants were less comfortable discussing HPV as a risk factor for OPC compared to non-HPV related risk factors ( t = 2.94, p < .01). Female participants preferred female providers, whereas male participants had no preference. Previous research has indicated dental providers recognize their role in HPV prevention, but research is needed to understand patients' perceptions of dental providers' role in HPV prevention. Findings demonstrate that US adults are comfortable discussing HPV and OPC with dental providers, which may be key to OPC-HPV prevention. Future research is needed to facilitate HPV communication between patients and dental providers.

In September 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the Caribbean region, among them the US territory of Puerto Rico (PR). Vaccination distribution and uptake suffered from the impact. This study evaluated the trends in monthly vaccination initiation rates for human papilloma virus (HPV), Tdap and meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY) adolescent vaccines from 2015 to 2019, during which it was possible to observe and analyze the impact of Hurricane Maria on vaccine initiation. Monthly initiation rates were estimated. Age-standardized initiation rate ratio (SRR) and 95% CI were estimated. The analysis included 85,340 adolescents; 52.3% were male, and 47.7% were females. September 2017 showed HPV vaccine initiation had the lower rates of all the studied vaccines, with a rate of 75% after the disaster (from a rate of almost 90% in July 2017). Tdap and MenACWY vaccines rates remained above 90% in the same period. The SRR of HPV vaccine for September and October 2017 showed an estimated reduction of 5% and 8% in vaccine initiation rates, respectively for each month, when 2016 was the reference year ( p > .05). The SRR of Tdap and MenACWY vaccines for November 2017 showed significant reductions when 2015 and 2016 were reference years ( p < .05). HPV vaccine initiation rate was the most severely affected by the Hurricane Maria. Post-natural disaster protocols should strengthen existing programs for facilitate immunization access.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the most common reproductive tract virus. Most HPV infections occur during adolescence or young adulthood, and thus college students are one of the main target populations of HPV vaccination. However, data on knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccine as well as the intention to be vaccinated among Chinese college students were limited. The purpose of this study was to address this gap by investigating a sample of college students from four universities and analyzing the factors influencing their intention. College students (N = 343) filled in a survey comprised of demographic information, HPV and vaccine knowledge, and vaccination intention between September 2018 and January 2019. A descriptive statistical analysis was conducted to describe students' HPV-related knowledge and vaccination intention. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the predictors of HPV vaccination intention. The participants had low levels of HPV and HPV vaccine-related knowledge, as well as modest intention to be vaccinated. Significant differences were identified in gender, years of study, and perceived susceptibility of HPV infection. Students who perceived higher risk of HPV infection (OR = 6.659, p = .001), had higher level knowledge of HPV vaccine (OR = 2.697, p < .001), in junior (OR = 0.186, p = .006) and senior year (OR = 0.276, p = .015) had greater intention to get HPV vaccinated. The findings suggest that multiple-level efforts are continuously needed to target Chinese college students to increase their HPV vaccine knowledge and vaccination awareness to reduce HPV-related disease burden among this population.

Currently in the United States, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage among eligible individuals is lower compared to coverage goals of 80% set by the HealthyPeople 2030 initiative. In this study, we used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015-2016 and 2017-2018 datasets to determine the association between HPV vaccine initiation among individuals of ages 9 to 26 years and their patterns of healthcare access and utilization. In particular, we examined the following healthcare characteristics: 1) having a routine place of healthcare, 2) having health insurance coverage, 3) frequency of healthcare visits per year, and 4) type of routine place of healthcare (outpatient primary care vs. ED, etc.). We fit independent multivariable logistic regression models for each NHANES dataset and controlled for sociodemographic characteristics and interactions with healthcare access and utilization characteristics. Our findings suggest that HPV vaccine initiation is positively associated with having a routine place of healthcare (2015-2016: aOR 1.92, 95% CI 1.25-2.95; 2017-2018: aOR 1.99, 95% CI 1.07-3.68). Relatedly, HPV vaccine initiation is negatively associated with never having received healthcare in the past year (2015-2016: aOR 0.61, 95% CI 0.41-0.90; 2017-2018: aOR 0.45, 95% CI 0.27-0.75). The results of this study suggest that interventions to promote HPV vaccination should include strategies that promote access to and utilization of routine health care services. Our findings are particularly salient in light of the drop in HPV vaccine initiation and healthcare access and utilization among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Some Canadian jurisdictions offer publicly funded HPV vaccine to gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) aged ≤26 years. We characterized factors associated with being in different stages of HPV vaccination., Methods: Engage is a sexual health study of GBM in the three largest Canadian cities recruited via respondent driven sampling (RDS). We categorized participants as: (1) unaware of HPV vaccine, (2) undecided/unwilling to get vaccinated, (3) willing to get vaccinated, (4) vaccinated with one or more doses. Our RDS-II weighted analyses used multinomial logistic regression to identify factors associated with being in earlier stages of the cascade compared to Stage 4., Results: Across the cities, 26-40%, 7-14%, 33-39%, and 13-28% were in Stages 1 to 4, respectively. Compared to Stage 4, being in earlier stages of the cascade was associated with bisexual-identification (Stage 1: adjusted odds ratio[aOR] = 2.84, 95% confidence interval[CI] = 1.06-7.62; Stage 2: aOR = 3.09, 95%CI = 1.19-8.05), having immigrated to Canada (Stage 1: aOR = 1.79, 95%CI 1.07-2.99), preference to keep same-sex romantic relationships private (Stage 1: aOR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.05-1.48; Stage 2: aOR = 1.24, 95%CI = 1.05-1.46), not receiving sexual health information (Stage 1: aOR = 0.31, 95% CI = 0.13-0.71; Stage 2: aOR = 0.27, 95%CI = 0.12-0.64), not accessing a health-care provider (Stage 2: aOR = 0.36, 95%CI = 0.15-0.83), and no past hepatitis A/B vaccination (Stage 1: aOR = 0.16, 95% CI = 0.09-0.30; Stage 2: aOR = 0.18, 95%CI = 0.09-0.35; Stage 3: aOR = 0.38, 95%CI = 0.21-0.61)., Discussion: Interventions are needed to reduce social and financial barriers, increase sexual health knowledge, and improve GBM-competent health-care access to increase vaccine uptake among GBM.

Despite the availability of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, uptake has been sub-optimal among certain religious groups. Psychosocial factors (threat appraisal, coping appraisal, and attitudes) have been identified as independent determinants of HPV vaccination. However, their interdependent effects have not been tested. We examined the interdependency of these psychosocial factors in predicting HPV vaccination intention among Christian parents of unvaccinated adolescents (using a theory-driven conceptual model). A cross-sectional study of 342 participants showed that perceived self-efficacy (β = 0.2, 0.11-0.29, p = <0.0001) and perceived response efficacy of HPV vaccine (β = 0.65, 0.53-0.77. p < .0001) were positively associated with vaccination intention. Our mediation analysis (using the Preachers and Hayes' approach) shows that attitudes toward HPV vaccination mediated 59% of the relationship between perceived self-efficacy to vaccinate child and HPV vaccination intention; and 61% of the relationship between perceived response efficacy of HPV vaccine and HPV vaccination intention. Attitudes may be the psychosocial factor that drives the effects of coping appraisal. Therefore, designing an attitude-based intervention to address religious barrier beliefs among Christian parents may nullify the impact of low self-efficacy and response efficacy on HPV vaccination.

The objective of this study was to investigate the parent cognition of information regarding the human papillomavirus (HPV) and their willingness toward HPV vaccination of their middle-school-aged children in Zunyi, Guizhou Province, China.The results provide a basis for improving the awareness concerning HPV-related information as a key vaccination strategy for implementing the HPV vaccine in the local context. Methods include the random cluster sampling method and questionnaires to survey parents. General descriptive and single-factor analyses were used to assess cognition to determine factors influencing vaccine willingness. Of 1,074 parents, 28.2% (302) and 38.0% (408) had heard of HPV and its vaccine before the survey, and when given HPV-related information, 73.9% (794) parents were willing to vaccinate their children. Reasons why parents did or did not want the vaccination were surveyed, with lack of sufficient knowledge about HPV and its vaccine being the primary reason to refuse vaccination. Concerns about safety, effectiveness, and perceiving low risk are the biggest obstacle in promoting vaccination. When the price is <1000, most parents (56.1%) are willing to vaccinate their children; thus, cost is also one of the concerns. Therefore, strategies for improving public awareness regarding the risk of cervical cancer and confidence in vaccination must be considered by policymakers.If the national authority confirms that the vaccine is safe and effective, the vaccine should be included in the national immunization program to increase publicity, address safety concerns, and allow for price regulation.

In 2018, Puerto Rico (PR) enacted a Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine school-entry requirement for students ages 11 to 12. Using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), we aimed to identify potential barriers and facilitators of this implementation. We conducted 38 qualitative interviews with stakeholders in PR from different organizations (Department of Health, Schools, Healthcare Providers, and Community organizations). We evaluated construct rating variability between the organizations to determine barriers and facilitators. The strongest facilitator determined was stakeholder's awareness of the parent's and student's needs to meet the HPV school-entry requirement. Other facilitators included initiatives for school-entry policies and the relative advantage of this requirement over different strategies. The strongest barriers included was the cost for private providers to administer the HPV vaccine, the negative influence of social media about the vaccine, which affected parents' acceptance, and the lack of school nurses as available staff resources for the school entry requirement. Findings from this study can be used to improve implementation (adaptations/modifications) and inform other states and countries in earlier stages of consideration of the adoption of similar immunization policies. Most barriers can be modifiable with the implementation of educational programs/training across schools, considering that they are the first line of response to parents of this school entry requirement.

The study aimed to quantify the preferences of female college students for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Zhejiang Province, China, using a discrete choice experiment (DCE). One medical college and one nonmedical college were selected using convenience sampling, and the respondents were identified using stratified cluster sampling. A DCE focused on vaccine-related and service-related attributes was conducted in 2019. Latent class analysis was used to estimate the vaccine-related attributes, and conditional logistic regression was used to construct the choice model for the service-related attributes. In total, 850 female college students finished the study. Two latent classes were identified. Those who had more knowledge of HPV and felt more pressure about the related infection and diseases had a significantly higher chance of belonging to class 1 and were more likely to choose vaccination (percentages of respondents choosing no vaccination was 1.1% in class 1 versus 84.7% in class 2, χ 2   = 641.1, P < .01). There were 742 respondents who chose vaccination in vaccine-related scenes, and 98.8% of them still chose to receive the vaccine in service-related scenes. Ways of making an appointment, number of weeks waiting for vaccination, service time for vaccination, time to the nearest vaccination site, and added cost all impacted the probability of choosing HPV vaccination services. It is concluded that higher levels of HPV knowledge and sociopsychological pressure led to a higher probability of HPV vaccination uptake in China. It is necessary to disseminate proper knowledge of HPV to improve the coverage and equality of HPV vaccination.

Introduction: HPV vaccines were administered in mainland China from July 2017 at a gradual rate. We aimed to assess the vaccination rate and vaccination influencing factors among college students in mainland China. Methods: From October to December 2018, we conducted face-to-face questionnaires including 5 sections and 22 questions to collect demographic information, HPV infection and transmission knowledge, HPV vaccine knowledge and attitudes among college students in Guangzhou, China. HPV vaccine vaccination status and cervical screening behaviors were self-reported. Knowledge and attitudes differences between the vaccinate and non-vaccinate groups were analyzed using univariable logistic regression. Vaccination-related influencing factors were estimated using multivariable logistic regression. Results: 5307 of 5414 valid questionnaires were collected. The self-reported cervical screening rate and HPV vaccine coverage were 11.82% (9.03%-14.61%) and 3.09% (2.62%-3.56%). In total, 55.57% of the participants were hesitant about vaccination. Urban residence (OR = 2.1, 95%CI: 1.4-3.3), high monthly consumption (OR = 2.6, 95%CI: 1.9-3.6), awareness of vaccination adaptive population (OR = 3.1, 95%CI: 1.9-5.0), awareness of infection-related risk factors (OR = 2.5, 95%CI: 1.1-5.7), and awareness of HPV vaccine effectiveness (OR = 3.2, 95%CI: 2.0-5.2) were significant in multivariable logistic regression. Conclusion: HPV vaccine coverage is quite low among college students in China Guangzhou. Economic affordability, awareness of HPV infection, and belief in the effectiveness of HPV vaccine are influencing factors for vaccination. In the future, establishing a national financial subsidy and strengthening health education is needed to increase the vaccination rate in China.

Objective : This study aimed to assess the knowledge of Chinese dentists on human papilloma virus (HPV), their willingness and factors prevention them from recommending patients for HPV vaccination, and to identify ways through which dentists can acquire HPV-related knowledge. Methods : This was a cross-sectional study based on Chinese dentists. The anonymous self-filled questionnaire method was used to collect demographic information of participants, their knowledge of HPV, willingness and barriers to recommending HPV vaccines to patients, and the strategies they can adopt to obtain HPV-related knowledge. Results : A total of 517 dentists completed the questionnaire, and 89.94% of dentists were willing to recommend HPV vaccination to patients. Participants aged 30-39 years, male dentists and dentist-in-charge had relatively lower knowledge scores than other groups. Besides, participants aged 30-39 years, working in private hospitals, and practicing in Southern China had a lower willingness to recommend HPV vaccination to patients. Recommending HPV vaccination to patients is not within the scope of practicing dentists, and concerns about the safety of the HPV vaccine were found to be the main barriers preventing its recommendation. Notably, 97.87% of dentists were eager to acquire HPV-related knowledge, and agreed for the first time to enroll in relevant educational courses. Conclusion : Chinese dentists had expressed a strong desire to recommend HPV vaccines to patients, even though their knowledge of HPV was scanty. Therefore, measures to improve their understanding of HPV vaccines and eliminate barriers suppressing their willingness to recommend HPV vaccines are urgently needed.

Objective : To evaluate the awareness of College Students (CSs) of HPV vaccine in China and provide evidence-based recommendations for HPV vaccine's publicity and promotion. Methods: Web of Science, PubMed, Science of Direct, EBSCO, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang Data were searched. A random effects meta-analysis was conducted to determine pooled estimates of Awareness Rate (AR) for HPV vaccine. Results: Of the 36 studies included, the estimated AR of HPV vaccine was 40.27% (95% CI : 30.86%, 50.06%) among Chinese CSs. The AR of HPV vaccine was stratified by factors as gender, major, area, city, survey time, and sampling method of the study. The pooled AR of HPV vaccine among CSs was as follows: 44.17% (95% CI : 31.65%, 57.09%) and 31.93% (95% CI : 13.25%, 54.30%) for females and males; 44.47% (95% CI : 29.90%, 59.55%) and 12.02% (95% CI : 7.69%, 17.15%) for medical-related and nonmedical majors; 44.47% (95% CI : 28.71-60.82%) and 41.16% (95% CI : 26.48-56.64%) for Eastern and Midwestern region; 48.86% (95% CI : 30.63-67.25%) and 33.19% (95% CI : 22.27-45.12%) for first-tier and second- and third-tier city; 29.67 (95% CI : 11.44-52.16%) and 38.81 (95% CI : 27.14-51.21%) for AR before and after HPV vaccine entered in China; 51.51% (95% CI : 32.21%, 70.53%) and 26.21% (95% CI : 17.41%, 36.10%) for nonrandom and random sampling. Conclusion: This review indicates that awareness of HPV vaccine among CSs remains relatively low in China compared with European countries. Our findings may provide useful information to better understand the HPV vaccine awareness status among Chinese CSs.

Human papillomavirus (HPV), the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide, is responsible for a variety of cancers. HPV vaccines can help prevent this infection and its potentially devastating carcinogenic outcomes. Although the incidence of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers among males is increasing, few studies have been published on HPV knowledge and vaccine acceptability among males. In this cross-sectional study, we assessed knowledge about HPV and the vaccine, as well as its acceptability, among third- and fourth-year male medical students in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Respondents were enrolled in any of the medical colleges in Jeddah from February to December 2018. A validated survey was used to collect information on HPV infection and vaccine knowledge and to ask questions assessing vaccine acceptability. HPV knowledge scores were created, and vaccine acceptability predictors were assessed with logistic regression. We collected data from 517 participants. Approximately 74% of the students had heard of HPV, with a mean knowledge score of 5.9 ± 4.6 out of 16; only 42% had heard of the HPV vaccine, with a mean knowledge score of 0.9 ± 1.6 out of 7. Among the respondents, 48.9% were interested in receiving the HPV vaccine. Although HPV infection and vaccine knowledge did not correlate with vaccine acceptability, those who had previously received the hepatitis B vaccine were more interested in receiving the HPV vaccine. In conclusion, male medical students had low HPV knowledge. Improving their HPV knowledge is important, as they are future health-care providers. The promotion of HPV vaccines in this potentially influential group is crucial for achieving effective disease prevention.

High-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV) can be present and cooperate with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) to promote the onset and/or progression of various cancers including cervical, breast, head and neck as well as colorectal. In this investigation, we explored the co-prevalence of high-risk HPV and EBV in 74 breast cancer tissues from Qatari women using polymerase chain reaction. We found that high-risk HPV and EBV are present in 48/74 (65%) and 36/74 (49%) of the cases, respectively. While we noted that the presence of HPV presence is associated with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) ( p = .008), however, the presence of EBV did not correlate with any breast cancer subgroup. Moreover, our data revealed that high-risk HPV and EBV are co-present in 35/74 (47%) of the samples and their co-presence is significantly associated with tumor grade ( p = .04) and tumor stage ( p = .04). These data indicate that HPV and EBV are commonly co-present in breast cancer and their association could be linked with a more aggressive tumor phenotype. Thus, further investigations are essential to understand the underlying mechanisms of HPV and EBV cooperation in breast carcinogenesis.

There is currently a lack of sufficient data on human papillomavirus (HPV)-attributable cervical carcinoma in China. Accordingly, we aimed to determine the prevalence and genotype distribution of HPV among women with cervical lesions in Shenzhen, in order to evaluate the potential benefit of HPV vaccination programs and inform cervical cancer control policies. We enrolled 5,255 patients who were admitted to the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences Shenzhen Hospital from January 2017 to December 2019. The HPV prevalence and genotype distribution were analyzed using the 21 HPV GenoArray diagnostic assay. A total of 937/5,255 patients showed HPV-positivity (prevalence rate 17.83%), of whom 85.81% (804/937) had high-risk HPV infection. HPV52 was the most prevalent genotype (4.72%, 248/5,255), followed by HPV58 (3.04%, 160/5,255), and HPV16 (2.72%, 143/5,255). The HPV prevalence rates among women with a normal cervix, low-grade intraepithelial lesions, high-grade intraepithelial lesions, invasive cervical cancer, and other characteristics were 15.63% (50/320), 58.65% (61/104), 80.00% (44/55), 88.57% (31/35), and 15.84% (751/4,741), respectively. HPV16, HPV18, and HPV52 accounted for the majority of cervical lesions, and the infection rates of HPV16 and HPV18 gradually increased with intraepithelial lesion progression (both P < .001). Our study found that HPV16, HPV52, and HPV18 played important roles in the occurrence and development of cervical lesions. This finding has the potential to guide the formulation of HPV screening and vaccination programs and preventive strategies for HPV-attributable cancer in this region.

A systematic literature review was conducted to describe in a historical perspective the evolution of studies concerning HPV vaccination. The search identified 794 articles of which 568 were included. The first article was published in 2001, and the maximum annual number of publications was reached in 2014. The average number of authors per paper was 8.8. Papers originated from 49 different countries, with the USA accounted for the maximum number of publications (n = 217). Efficacy (46.5%) and safety (31.0%) were the most prevalent objectives. Clinical trials constituted the largest group of methods (37.9%). Chronological trends did not reveal any lasting curve-crossings, indicating that the priority topics have remained the same. The geographical origin of these studies raises questions about the transposability of the results to populations where HPV vaccination has been studied only a little. This study could help guide future research to less-studied research objectives, particularly for vaccines.

Background: Though human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is a safe and effective method of protecting against associated cancers, uptake rates remain low among adolescents. Few studies have examined how social media use contributes to HPV-related knowledge gaps among parents and caregivers., Objective: To investigate the association between social media use and HPV-related awareness and knowledge with a focus on differences by gender and race/ethnicity among a nationally representative sample of adults with children in the household., Methods: We used data from the Health Information National Trends (HINTS) Survey (2017-2019) (N = 2,720). Multivariate logistic regressions were used to examine the association of social media use on HPV awareness and knowledge outcomes., Results: Compared to non-users, engaging in one, two, three, or four social media behaviors were associated with greater HPV awareness (aOR: 2.09; 95%CI: 1.18-3.70, aOR: 2.49; 95%CI: 1.40-4.42, aOR: 2.64; 95%CI: 1.15-6.05, and aOR: 2.44; 95%CI: 1.11-5.36, respectively). Increased social media use was associated with increased HPV vaccine awareness. Men, African American, Hispanic, and Asian American respondents were less likely to be aware of HPV or HPV vaccine. Social media use was not associated with cancer knowledge., Conclusions: Increased social media use is associated with an increased awareness of HPV and HPV vaccine for adults with children in the household. Social media-based efforts can be utilized to increase knowledge of the benefits of HPV vaccination as cancer prevention, which may be a precursor to reducing HPV vaccine hesitancy and encouraging uptake to decrease cancer incidence rates among vulnerable populations.

Introduction: It is unclear what role daughters play in the decision-making process regarding HPV vaccination. Therefore, we explored the impact of HPV vaccination intention among parents and their 12-13 year-old daughters on HPV vaccination uptake., Methods: In February 2014 parents/guardians and their 12-13 year-old daughters were invited to complete a questionnaire about socio-psychological determinants of the decision-making process regarding HPV vaccination. Vaccination status of the daughter was retrieved from the national vaccination database after the last possible vaccination date in 2014. The association between HPV vaccination uptake and intention, and determinants of intention, was jointly assessed using a generalized structural equation model, stratified by origin of parents (Dutch versus non-Dutch)., Results: In total, 273 Dutch parent-daughter dyads and 165 non-Dutch dyads were analyzed for this study. HPV vaccination uptake was 90% (246/273) and 84% (139/165) in the Dutch and non-Dutch group, respectively. In the Dutch group, high parental intention (β = 2.3, 95%CI 1.2-3.3) and high daughters' intention (β = 1.5, 95%CI 0.41-2.6) were significantly associated with HPV vaccination uptake. In the non-Dutch group, high daughters' intention (β = 1.2, 95%CI 0.16-2.2) was significantly associated with HPV vaccination, but high parental intention was not (β = 0.52, 95%CI -0.47-1.5). Attitude was the most prominent socio-psychological determinant associated with vaccination intention among all groups., Conclusion: In the non-Dutch group, only daughters' intention was significantly associated with HPV vaccination uptake, whereas in the Dutch group both the parents' and the daughters' intention were significantly associated with uptake. The role of the child in the decision-making process might need to be taken into account when developing new interventions focused on increasing HPV vaccination uptake, especially among individuals of non-Dutch origin.

In Japan, government support for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination began in November 2010. However, the mass media repeatedly reported on severe adverse events. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare suspended proactive recommendations for HPV vaccines in June 2013. Japan's HPV vaccination rate dropped from 70% to less than 1% in 2017.We examined cervical cancer screening results in terms of abnormal cytology, histology, and HPV vaccination status among 11,903 women aged 20 to 25 y in the fiscal year 2015. The overall rate of HPV vaccination was 26.1% (3,112/11,903). Regarding cytology, the rate of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) or worse was 3.3% (103/3,112) in women who received HPV vaccination (vaccine (+) women) and 5.6% (496/8,791) in women who did not (vaccine (-) women). The rate of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) or worse was 0.26% (8/3,112) in vaccine (+) women and 0.81% (72/8,791) in vaccine (-) women. Regarding histology, the rate of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 1 or worse (CIN1+) was 1.4% (42/3,112) in vaccine (+) women and 2.1% (178/8,791) in vaccine (-) women. The rates of CIN2+ and CIN3+ were similar regardless of vaccination. We found a significantly lower incidence of CIN in vaccine (+) women. These results suggest that the resumption of recommending HPV vaccination as primary prevention for cervical cancer is needed in Japan.

HPV vaccination prevents most HPV-related cancers yet vaccination rates remain low. In this cross-sectional study, we examined the association between maternal HPV experiences and HPV vaccination uptake among children and whether this association may be explained by perceived benefits of vaccination. We used logistic regression models to estimate the effect of (1) maternal history of abnormal Pap smear, (2), family/friend history of cervical cancer, and (3) maternal history of cervical cancer on HPV vaccination uptake among children. Separate mediation analyses were conducted to determine if perceived benefits mediated the relationship between each maternal HPV experience and HPV vaccination uptake. History of abnormal Pap smear (OR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.15, 1.97), family history of cervical cancer (OR = 1.72, CI = 1.26, 2.35), and personal history of cervical cancer (OR = 3.00, CI = 1.82, 4.95) predicted HPV vaccination of children. Perceived benefits mediated the relationship between history of abnormal Pap smear (indirect effect =.146, SE =.069, 95% CI =.014, .289), family history of cervical cancer (indirect effect =.228, SE =.079, CI =.080, .387), and personal history of cervical cancer (indirect effect =.298, SE =.116, CI =.082, .533) on HPV vaccination. Our results suggest that personal experiences with HPV-related disease may influence maternal HPV vaccine decision-making.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause genital warts and HPV-related cancer.People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)are more symptomatic for HPV infections.Campos dos Goytacazes,a municipality of Rio de Janeiro,introduced the quadrivalent HPV vaccine (4vHPV)for HIV-positive women four years before initiation of a public vaccination program.This study analyzed the prevalence of HPV infection in HIV-positive women and the variables associated with infectionTwo groups were evaluated:group 1,with Pap smear and HPV-negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR);group 2, individuals with at least one positive result for HPV in PCR or pap smear.PCR was performed in endocervical samples using generic primers, and the LCD-Array Kit was used for genotyping.Univariate and multivariate analyzes were performed.Results in 109 women (Group 1 n = 70; group 2 n = 39)showed an overall HPV prevalence of 36%.Results also showed that 88% (n = 23) and 96% (n = 25)of typed viruses (total of typed viruses n = 26)were included in 4vHPV and 9vHPV (nonavalent HPV),respectively.In univariate analysis,age less than 45 years, a high number of sexual partners,and HIV-viral load were risk factors for infection.However, a CD4 indicator was associated with protection.Although HIV infection is generally related to multiple and rare types of HPV,this study showed that a vast majority of the HPV types found are included in 4vHPV.Considering that age less than 45 years is a risk factor, the use of 4vHPV in Brazil should be extended in the public vaccination program to HIV seropositive women up to age 45 years.

In China, there are about 131,500 new cases of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection every year. However, studies focused on the related cognitions in the general college-going population, who belong to an at-risk age group and are of childbearing age, are relatively limited. Thus, this cross-sectional online survey study, conducted from December 2018 to March 2019, sought to investigate HPV vaccination rates, knowledge, acceptance, and associated factors in this population. Descriptive analysis and ordinal logistic regression analysis were conducted to analyze the factors associated with HPV vaccination intention. A total of 1,029 questionnaires were collected, of which 1,022 were valid (males: 267, females: 755). As per the results, only 3.1% of the sample had been vaccinated against HPV. The overall levels of knowledge about HPV and its vaccination were low. Male students' knowledge about HPV types, infection symptoms, vaccination cycles, and preventable diseases was significantly lower than that of female students. As for acceptance, only 36.9% of females and 24.8% of males indicated that they would choose to undergo HPV vaccination. Chinese college students' knowledge of HPV and its vaccination is limited. More than half of the sample was unsure about undergoing HPV vaccination, with concerns about safety and effectiveness serving as the main barriers. Measures such as strengthening health education, improving vaccination safety and effectiveness, and reducing vaccine prices should be taken to promote HPV vaccination among Chinese college students.

Background: Healthcare workers (HCWs) play a key role in the recommendation of HPV vaccination. Our study aimed to understand to what extent a structured health intervention could change the knowledge and attitudes toward HPV and its vaccines among HCWs in Western China., Methods: This was a multi-center, questionnaire-based interventional study conducted across 12 cities of seven provinces in Western China, from November 2018 to July 2019. Participants were recruited from local health systems by e-invitation. Questionnaires were administered to participants before and after the intervention., Results: A total of 1448 HCWs attended the educational lectures and 1354 participants completed both pre- and post-study questionnaires. In general, HCWs had satisfactory baseline knowledge regarding HPV and its vaccines compared with other populations, and a significantly higher knowledge level was observed after the intervention. However, some more specific knowledge on the vaccination procedures, other HPV-related diseases and whether HPV testing was required before vaccination was relatively poor. Following the educational intervention, the correct responses to the above questions increased ( P < .001). However, it was still lower compared with answers to other questions. Change was also detected regarding HCWs' willingness to recommend HPV vaccines to the appropriate population ( P < .001)., Conclusion: Educational intervention on HPV and its vaccines is effective in improving HCWs' knowledge levels and willingness to recommend HPV vaccines. Future educational interventions should focus more on knowledge regarding HPV-related diseases and HPV vaccination. Education campaigns targeting rural HCWs are urgently needed in the near future.

Programs aimed at boosting human papillomavirus (HPV)-related awareness are considered one of the most effective strategies for increasing vaccination uptake and eliminating HPV-associated cancers. Several US states have made strong commitments to this effort through legislation and dedicated funds. However, it is not known if these efforts have resulted in population-level increments in HPV awareness overtime. Using the Health Information National Trends Survey data, we examined the awareness of HPV and HPV vaccine in the US, between 2008 and 2018. Prevalence estimates and confidence intervals were calculated for HPV and HPV vaccine awareness. Further, we assessed awareness after stratifying by key sociodemographic characteristics. Overall, the awareness of HPV and HPV vaccine declined over time. The lowest awareness was among racial minorities, rural residents, male respondents, those aged 65 years and older, as well as those with the lowest educational and socioeconomic standing. Between 2013 and 2018, the awareness of HPV and HPV vaccine declined by almost 10% among males, those with a high school level of education or lower, and those who earned less than USD 35,000 per annum. In 2018, the awareness of HPV and HPV vaccine was highest among non-Hispanic whites (65.8% and 66.5%) and female adults (70.5% and 71.4%); however, these figures represented declines of about 5% from rates observed in 2008. Amidst a background of sub-optimal HPV vaccination uptake and a growing incidence of HPV-associated cancers in the US, HPV-related awareness within the general US population has declined over time. This calls for stricter enforcement of legislation aimed at boosting HPV awareness, as well as frequent evaluation of government-funded HPV awareness programs.

Objectives: We compared HPV vaccine initiation and completion of heterosexual with lesbian and bisexual (LB) women., Methods: We aggregated National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2009 to 2016 for 3,017 women aged 18 to 34 y in the United States. HPV vaccine initiation was defined as reported receipt of ≥1 dose of the vaccine and completion as receipt of the three recommended doses. Weighted percentages and multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine differences in HPV vaccine initiation and completion between heterosexual and LB women., Results: Approximately 12% of respondents self-identified as LB women. Overall, a higher percentage of respondents (26%) had initiated the HPV vaccine than completed the three vaccine doses (17%). In the bivariate analysis, LB women had higher initiation ([35% of LB women versus 25% heterosexual]; p = .0012) and completion rates ([24% of LB women versus 17% heterosexual]; p = .0052) than heterosexual women. After adjusting for covariates, compared to heterosexual women, LB women were 60% (aOR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.16-2.19) more likely to initiate and 63% (aOR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.12-2.37) more likely to complete the HPV vaccine., Conclusions: Although LB women had higher likelihood of HPV vaccine initiation and completion compared with heterosexual women, their HPV vaccine uptake was well below the Healthy People 2020 target (80%). Understanding differences in the drivers of vaccine uptake in the LB population may inform strategies that would further increase HPV vaccine uptake toward achieving the 80% completion target.

Little is known regarding Chinese mothers' intention to vaccinate their daughters against human papillomavirus (HPV) since the HPV vaccine was approved for use in China in 2016. The aim was to explore maternal HPV vaccination acceptance, preference for 2-, 4- or 9-valent HPV vaccine and acceptance of domestically manufactured HPV vaccines. Study participants were mothers of primary school children in Southeastern region of Fujian. An online cross-sectional survey was undertaken between June and August 2019. Among the total of 3,586 completed responses (response rate 28.5%), the intention to vaccinate daughter against HPV was high (83.3%). Higher maternal education and perceived benefit and barriers were associated with greater intention to vaccinate. Among mothers who did not intend to vaccinate their daughters, the three most common reasons were daughter being too young to receive HPV vaccination (40.6%), fear of side effects (31.9%) and vaccine price is too high (16.0%). The largest proportion (41.4%) preferred their daughter to be vaccinated with the 9-valent HPV vaccine (9vHPV). Greater preference for 9vHPVwas strongly associated with higher maternal education level and annual household income. The majority of mothers expressed a preference for imported HPV vaccine (56.3%). Our result indicates that lower intentions to vaccinate daughters against HPV among less educated and lower-income mothers may lead to significant social inequalities in HPV vaccine uptake in the country.

Background: Aside from personal beliefs, women's intention to uptake human papillomavirus vaccination can be influenced by their perceived risks of developing cervical cancer and daily communication., Objectives: This study incorporated perceived risks and communication factors (i.e., media attention and interpersonal discussion) with theory of planned behavioral factors (i.e., attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) to predict women's intentions to uptake human papillomavirus vaccination in China., Methods: A quantitative survey was conducted with 417 female university students in China. The Structural Equation Modeling analysis was applied to test the proposed extended TPB model and to examine the hypotheses in Mplus software., Results: The results showed that the original theory of planned behavior factors and the perceived risk toward cervical cancer were positively related to their intention to uptake human papillomavirus vaccination. Moreover, media attention and interpersonal discussion positively affected people's attitudes toward human papillomavirus vaccination and subjective norm, which further influenced their intentions to uptake human papillomavirus vaccination., Conclusion: This study can help better understand unvaccinated eligible vaccine recipients and identify the differences between individuals who are likely and unlikely to get vaccinated.

We recently performed two studies exploring the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) types 16, 18, 31, 33 and 35 in human colorectal cancers from the Syrian population. Herein, we report that EBV and high-risk HPVs are co-present in colorectal cancers from Syria. We reveal that 17 (~17%) of 102 cancer samples are positive for both EBV and high-risk HPVs and their co-presence is associated with high/intermediate grade invasive carcinomas. These data suggest that EBV and high-risk HPVs are co-present in human colorectal cancers where they might cooperate on the initiation and/or progression of these cancers. Thus, we believe that future studies are necessary to confirm the co-presence of these oncoviruses and their cooperative role in human colorectal carcinogenesis.

Background: The high cost and insufficient supply of HPV vaccines have substantially slowed their implementation in lower-income countries. This study aimed to assess the incremental cost-effectiveness of two doses of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination (bivalent 16/18 vaccine; 2vHPV) compared to a no-vaccination scenario and a three-dose scenario in one province in China., Methods: A static Markov model was used to model a lifetime cohort of 100,000 girls aged 12 years at the start of vaccination. A two-dose vaccination schedule was assumed to be non-inferior to a three-dose schedule in terms of vaccine efficacy, and both vaccination schemes were assumed to provide lifelong protection. Incremental costs, health effects and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios were used to measure the outcomes when comparing the different strategies., Results: Compared to no vaccination, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (Chinese yuan per quality-adjusted life year) of the two-dose vaccination strategy is 12,472, and the 2-dose strategy is calculated to be cost saving relative to the 3-dose vaccination strategy., Conclusions: Introducing the 2vHPV vaccine would be highly cost effective at a per-dose vaccine price of CNY 500, which has implications for cervical cancer control in China and other resource-limited countries.

This manuscript discloses end-of-study safety data of a community-randomized controlled trial in Finland (NCT00534638), assessing the effectiveness of two vaccination strategies (gender-neutral versus females only) using the AS04-adjuvanted human papillomavirus (HPV)-16/18 (AS04-HPV-16/18) vaccine. The total vaccination cohort included 32,175 adolescents aged 12-15 y at vaccination of whom 14,837 received the AS04-HPV-16/18 vaccine and 17,338 received the hepatitis-B virus vaccine (control). Spontaneous reporting of serious adverse events (SAEs) combined with surveillance using nation-wide health registries showed an acceptable safety profile of the AS04-HPV-16/18 vaccine. During the study period (up to 6.5 y), the incidences (per 100,000 person-years) of reported SAEs considered as possibly related to vaccination were 39.1 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 25.3-57.7) and 39.8 (95%CI: 26.8-56.8) in the HPV and control groups, respectively. The most frequently reported new-onset autoimmune diseases (NOADs) were ulcerative colitis (incidence rates of 28.2 and 33.1 per 100,000 person-years in the HPV and control groups, respectively), insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (21.9 and 37.1), Crohn's disease (15.6 and 22.5), celiac disease (15.6 and 21.2), and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (14.1 and 15.9). Of 1,344 pregnancies reported (777 and 567 in the HPV and control groups, respectively), most resulted in elective termination (58.4% and 58.6%), birth of a live infant (32.7% and 32.3%), or in spontaneous abortion (8.0% and 7.9%). No major, registered congenital anomalies were identified. The incidence rates of NOADs and pregnancy outcomes were generally balanced between groups. No specific safety signals were identified in the population-based health registry surveillance. Plain Language Summary What is the context? ● Since first licensure in 2007 of the AS04-adjuvanted human papillomavirus (HPV)-16/18 vaccine ( Cervarix , GSK), large quantity of safety data has been collected and confirmed its safety profile. This study provides further unique, population-based safety data from vaccinated Finnish adolescents monitored via health registries up to 6.5 y of follow-up. What is new? ● The vaccine has shown an acceptable safety profile in girls and boys. The risk of new-onset autoimmune diseases (NOADs) was similar between the HPV vaccine group and the control group and in line with the expectations for the studied population. ● The study supports that safety surveillance via national health registries is in general more sensitive than the conventional safety reporting, notably for monitoring specific chronic diseases, e.g. autoimmune disorders. What is the impact? ● This study highlights the importance of health registries in long-term vaccination safety surveillance. The population-based safety data reported in this study further support the routine administration of the HPV vaccine to girls and boys.

There is a high burden of cervical cancer in the Caribbean region, particularly in the Bahamas, yet there are few studies of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV vaccine in the region. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and awareness of HPV and the HPV vaccine among school-aged youth (15-18 years) living in the Bahamas.Cross-sectional data were obtained from the "Getting to Zero" HIV study in the Bahamas conducted in 2014/2015 (n = 1553). The questionnaire elicited information on knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccines, using previously validated scales. Data analysis included Chi-square tests and Mann Whitney U test.In this sample of school-aged youth, only 10.7% (146/1364) had ever heard of HPV. With respect to those who were sexually active (n = 685), only 10.7% had ever heard of HPV. For those who had heard of HPV, knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccines was assessed on an HPV Knowledge and HPV Vaccine Knowledge scale, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in mean HPV knowledge score between males and females, or HPV vaccine knowledge scores, between males and females.There was a general lack of awareness of HPV and HPV vaccines among school-aged youth in the Bahamas. This is an important gap in the HPV vaccine strategy and cancer prevention, as this is the age at which most people acquire HPV. It emphasizes the importance of developing a careful implementation plan, with an evaluation of knowledge and attitudes, in order to have an effective HPV vaccine uptake.

Disparities in HPV vaccination coverage by metropolitan statistical area (MSA) status were observed in the 2016 and 2017 National Immunization Survey - Teen (NIS-Teen). In 2017, HPV vaccination initiation (≥1dose) coverage was 11 percentage points lower for adolescents living in non-MSAs (mostly rural areas) and 7 percentage points lower among those living in MSA, non-principal cities (suburban areas) compared to those living in MSA, principal cities (mostly urban areas). In order to understand how this disparity has changed over time, we examined trends in HPV vaccine initiation by MSA status from 2013 to 2017. Weighted linear regression by survey year was used to estimate annual percentage point changes in HPV vaccination initiation. The five-year average annual percentage point increases in HPV vaccination initiation coverage were 5.2 in mostly urban areas, 4.9 for suburban areas, and 5.2 for mostly rural areas. Despite increases in each MSA area, coverage in mostly rural areas was consistently and significantly lower than coverage in mostly urban areas. Coverage was significantly lower among teens living in mostly rural areas regardless of poverty status, sex, and race/ethnicity except among black, non-Hispanic adolescents. There was no significant change in the magnitude of the disparity between mostly urban areas and mostly rural areas over time ( p = .98). A better understanding of the facilitators and barriers to HPV vaccination in mostly rural areas is needed to identify and implement targeted strategies to improve HPV vaccination coverage and reduce these disparities.

Background : National immunization schedules in many countries recommend HPV vaccination for females until the age of 26 years, and thus substantial numbers with reproductive age may be exposed to HPV vaccines. Objective : To assess whether inadvertent HPV vaccine exposures in the periconceptional period or during pregnancy were associated with increased risks for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Search strategy : A search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and WanFang databases (until March 31, 2019) was performed. Selection criteria : Studies that assess the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in HPV vaccine exposed/unexposed pregnancies were included. The adverse pregnancy outcomes included spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, small for sestational age, preterm birth, and birth defects. Data collection and analysis : The pooled relative risk (RR) was applied for the effect measure of the study. RRs and 95% confidence interval (CI) were measured when the paper did not report the effect. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using the Cochrane's Q and I 2 statistics. Main results : Of 374 identified citations, 8 met inclusion criteria. Compared with the unexposed pregnancies, HPV vaccine exposed pregnancies were associated with no higher risk for spontaneous abortion (RR, 0.99 [95% CI, 0.90 to 1.08]); stillbirth (RR, 1.16 [95% CI, 0.71 to 1.90]); small for gestational age (RR, 0.96 [95% CI, 0.86 to 1.07]); preterm birth (RR, 1.04 [95% CI, 0.91 to 1.18]); or birth defects (RR, 1.18 [95% CI, 0.97 to 1.43]). Conclusions : Inadvertent bivalent/quadrivalent HPV vaccination during pregnancy was not associated with significantly greater risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes.
