The distribution of phenotypic and allelic frequencies of aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALADH) in different areas of Greece is reported. The frequencies of the allele ALADH1 and ALADH2 in Greece are 0.955 and 0.0455, respectively.

Abstract

The phenotypes and allele frequencies of two serum protein systems (GC and C3) were studied in 91 consecutive patients with ulcerative colitis and compared with healthy controls. No significant differences were found as far as GC was concerned. However, significant differences were observed in C3: the C3*F allele and C3FS phenotype were more frequent in patients than in controls.

Abstract

The phenotypes and gene frequencies of two serum protein systems (GC, C3) were studied in 238 consecutive patients with peptic ulcer from all over Greece. 173 patients had duodenal ulcer and 65 had gastric ulcer. Healthy Greeks studied previously in our department served as controls. No significant differences were found between the studied groups and the controls as far as GC was concerned. However, significant differences emerged in C3; the C3*F gene was almost twice more common and the C3F phenotype almost three times more frequent in patients than in controls.

Abstract

The phenotypes and gene frequencies of 3 serum protein systems (Hp, GC and C3) were studied in 114 consecutive patients from all over Greece with gastric carcinoma. Healthy Greeks studied previously in our Department served as controls. No significant differences were found between patients and controls concerning Hp. Significant differences were found in the GC and C3 systems; GC 2-1 and C3F phenotype as well as C3*F gene frequencies were significantly higher in patients than in controls.

Abstract

The distribution of phenotypes and gene frequencies of the group-specific component (Gc) and haptoglobin (Hp) were studied in 169 and 177 patients with multiple myeloma, respectively. The statistical analysis of our findings in comparison to the frequency of these genes in the general population does not support any correlation between the distribution of these phenotypes and the multiple myeloma or its immunological classes.

Abstract

The polymorphism of the third component of the human complement (C3) was investigated in a sample of 1,055 unrelated healthy individuals from nine different areas of Greece. The estimated gene frequencies were: C3S = 0.786 and C3F = 0.211. Three individuals were found to have rare variant C3 types. The allele frequencies resemble those reported for other Caucasian populations.
