The article focuses on the annual summer internship program that encourages undergraduate students to join with so that various findings from Human Ecology research may be applied to communities in New York. Last 2007, both undergraduate students Julie Lundgren and Alissa Ritter have joined the program and worked with assistant professor Kosali Simon and nutritional sciences professor Christine Olson, respectively. Both students have helped to explain the Medicare prescription drug benefit to senior citizens and the environmental factors leading to obesity. The article reports on a new human ecology study which states that healthy adults who were close to the World Trade Center in New York City, during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, have less gray matter in key emotion centers of their brains compared to those who were more than 200 miles away. The study was conducted by scientist Barbara Ganzel. She says that smaller volume of gray matter composed largely of cells and capillary blood vessels were found in areas that process emotions.
