This paper reviews digital methods of scholarship for visualization and mapping, and it then shows how creative and experimental visualization can help us to study the extensive networks that lay behind human mobility, from trade to war, communication, pilgrimage, migration, and much else. In the process, the paper will familiarize historians with the key aspects of digital methods from amalgamating large quantities of data to finding patterns within that data. This discussion of visualization along with the sample maps should demonstrate that digital methods offer a new tool to enhance traditional scholarship and shape richer facts and arguments. This article traces the transformation in the relationship between former U.S. Presidents John Adams and James Monroe during the period from 1795 to Monroe's presidency, in an attempt to determine the nuances of early U.S. national politics and friendship. The relationship between Monroe and Adams began in confrontation during the diplomatic crisisthat precipitated a three-year undeclared war between the U.S. and France during Adams' presidency. Adams' dislike of Monroe appears to have specifically originated with Monroe's support of atheist Thomas Paine, whom Adams despised, and his general friendship with France. In a deeper sense, Adams and Monroe's unlikely friendship in their later years reveals the word's ambiguous meaning in an era of transition from classical republicanism to liberal democracy. Friendship, in its genteel variant between Adams and Monroe, clearly retained traditional aristocratic components of noblesse oblige.
