This paper investigates whether students’ personal happiness is different from student satisfaction and considers if this may have consequences for university policy and management. It does this by comparing happiness and satisfaction in two cohorts of students from two United Kingdom universities. One is a distinctive research university and the other a university whose heritage has been in the polytechnic sector prior to its charter, referred to as a post-1992 university. The results, although preliminary, do appear to show that satisfied students are also happy students. However, what contributes to these states of being is different. The implication for institutional policy is discussed and a warning that to assume satisfaction (measured by satisfaction survey results) as happiness might be problematic in addressing improvement in the student experience.

Tertiary assessment policy and practice address multiple purposes that can both complement and contradict one another. This mixed-method study employing both quantitative and qualitative data builds on the results of a large-scale survey of academic staff and student conceptions of assessment with a follow-up analysis of staff comments, systematic review of institutional policy documents and individual interviews with senior academic managers. Institutional policy patterns are evaluated in light of issues emerging from the survey data as well as the international research literature. Based on the findings, the article concludes with recommendations for the design of quality policy and practice guidelines to ensure that tertiary assessment is manageable, valid, equitable and has the integrity required by stakeholders in higher education institutions.

Higher education in the UK has seen a steady increase in the numbers of part-time teachers, yet the way in which they are inducted into teaching and the utilisation of their expertise are under-researched. This qualitative study of 33 part-time teachers from several universities suggests that their involvement in higher education should be considered from a fresh perspective, which differs from approaches to the enhancement of university teaching that rely upon simply educating individual teachers to do better by requiring their attendance at formally provided courses and events. While these approaches have their place, modern research on professional learning is increasingly pointing to the view that professional formation is an ecological process that is insufficiently served by the formal provision of learning opportunities. The ecological perspective, which emphasises the part played by the everyday workplace in professional formation, provides a challenge to leaders and managers regarding the development and implementation of institutional policy and practice.
