This article focuses on rape crisis centers in Canada. In June 2004, as women arrive at the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape, they are invited to sign a large strip of brown paper that marks various dates in the center's 30 years of feminist rabble-rousing. Other crisis centres like it have weathered many changes, both in the anti-rape movement and in society in general. One of the most controversial changes in the anti-rape movement has been a shift toward professionalization. Many feminists believe that moving away from a collective, peer-counseling environment means watering down the feminist principles that nurtured the growth of rape crisis centres.
