The article discusses American writers, painters, and sculptors who traveled to Rome in the 18th and 19th centuries to study. The author states that Benjamin West, in 1760, was the first American artist to go to Rome to study. The author refers to work these artists and writers created as artifacts of American culture. The author focuses on work based on three ancient Roman images which dominated the creative consciousness of the Americans: the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, and the Campagna Romana. Several examples of artwork are provided.
