Enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose feedstocks has been observed as the rate-limiting stage during anaerobic digestion. This necessitated the need for pretreatment before anaerobic digestion for an effective and efficient process. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of acidic pretreatment on Arachis hypogea shells, and different conditions of H(2)SO(4) concentration, exposure time, and autoclave temperature were considered. The substrates were digested for 35 days at a mesophilic temperature to assess the impact of pretreatment on the microstructural organization of the substrate. For the purpose of examining the interactive correlations between the input parameters, response surface methodology (RSM) was used. The result reveals that acidic pretreatment has the strength to disrupt the recalcitrance features of Arachis hypogea shells and make them accessible for microorganisms' activities during anaerobic digestion. In this context, H(2)SO(4) with 0.5% v. v(−1) for 15 min at an autoclave temperature of 90 °C increases the cumulative biogas and methane released by 13 and 178%, respectively. The model's coefficient of determination (R(2)) demonstrated that RSM could model the process. Therefore, acidic pretreatment poses a novel means of total energy recovery from lignocellulose feedstock and can be investigated at the industrial scale.

Consumption of water polluted by crude oil is a major environmental problem typical in exploration areas. Numerous health complications such as high blood pressure, myocardial infarction, and other heart complications are prevalent and ravaging. These have gradually become age-defiling disease conditions that are usually maintained with lifestyle changes and diet control. The effect of dietary supplementation with 10% and 20% roasted cashew nuts (RCN) on systolic blood pressure and angiotensin converting enzyme I (ACE I) activities in mixed petroleum fraction (MPF) induced toxicity was studied in male Wistar rats through the modulation of the renin-angiotensin system. The phytochemicals in RCN were quantified using the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. To predict likely binding affinity and stability, computational methods such as molecular docking, ADME, and molecular dynamic simulation were used. Out of the seven phytochemicals identified, rutin, gallic acid, and quercetin had the greatest quantities. Similarly, rutin had the highest binding affinities with ACE I, -10.7 kcal/mol, followed by quercetin, at -9.1 kcal/mol. Most studies on climate change adaptation strategies adoption have focused on economic factors with little or no attention to the impact of collective actions and social capital networks. This paper investigates how farmers' participation in social capital networks influenced climate change adaptation strategies adoption in Nigeria. This study was carried out in the South-western Nigeria. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, binary probit regression, multinomial logit regression, endogenous switching regression and multinomial endogenous switching regression models. The results suggest that significant differences exist in the years of membership in the social capital networks, access to weather information and market between farm managers who adopted climate change adaptation strategies and those who did not. Plot managers who adopted climate change adaptation strategies are found to have obtained much mean yield and farm revenue than their counterparts. The results further show that participation in the social capital networks does not only significantly influence plot manager's decision to adopt but also influences the choice of climate change adaptation strategies adopted by farmers. The study concludes that a farmer who chooses to participate in social capital networks has a higher level of adopting climate change adaptation strategies than what a random farmer would have had in Nigeria. We recommend that policies aimed at increasing the adoption of climate change adaptation strategies among farmers should be channelled through locally organised farmers-based social capital networks., Climate change, Adoption, Adaptation strategies, Participation, Social capital.

Poor adherence to promoting health behaviours is a significant challenge for prevention and management of infectious respiratory diseases. Non-pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) remain a proven behavioural practice for reducing the spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) currently ravaging the world. Studies on Covid-19 have primarily focused on epidemiology, virology, and potential drug treatments to the neglect of behavioural practice of low-income settings. This study examines the extent health belief model predicts the behavior of 405 urban poor residents of Ogun State, which recorded the first index case in Nigeria, towards adoption Covid-19 NPIs. A cross-sectional study was conducted to find out the relationship between study participant characteristics, HBM constructs and unhealthy behavior. Study constructs were assessed on a four point Likert scale and were mean aggregated such that higher scores indicated stronger feelings about a construct. Findings shows that urban poor in the age group 30–40 years were more likely to feel susceptible to contracting Covid-19 (mean score: 2.59 and std. dev. 0.54), they also had a higher perception of the benefit of Covid-19 preventive behaviours than participants in other age groups (mean score: 2.95 and std. dev. 0.71). Also, the most prevalent unhealthy behaviour amongst urban poor residents was the indiscriminate use of facemasks as shown by almost half (47.6%) of participants who agreed that they use facemasks all the time even when alone. The study concludes that though urban poor residents feel threatened by Covid-19, nexus of factors such as low financial earnings, inadequate knowledge, and limited access to basic medical needs hamper the effective adoption of NPIs., Behaviour; Covid-19; Health belief model; Practice; Urban poor; Nigeria.

Inhibitors of Keap1 would disrupt the covalent interaction between Keap1 and Nrf2 to unleash Nrf2 transcriptional machinery that orchestrates its cellular antioxidant, cytoprotective and detoxification processes thereby, protecting the cells against oxidative stress mediated diseases. In this in silico research, we investigated the Keap1 inhibiting potential of fifty (50) antioxidants using pharmacokinetic ADMET profiling, bioactivity assessment, physicochemical studies, molecular docking investigation, molecular dynamics and Quantum mechanical-based Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies using Keap1 as the apoprotein control. Out of these 50 antioxidants, Maslinic acid (MASA), 18-alpha-glycyrrhetinic acid (18-AGA) and resveratrol stand out by passing the RO5 (Lipinski rule of 5) for the physicochemical properties and ADMET studies. These three compounds also show high binding affinity of -10.6 kJ/mol, -10.4 kJ/mol and -7.8 kJ/mol at the kelch pocket of Keap1 respectively. Analysis of the 20ns trajectories using RMSD, RMSF, ROG and h-bond parameters revealed the stability of these compounds after comparing them with Keap1 apoprotein. Furthermore, the electron donating and accepting potentials of these compounds was used to investigate their reactivity using Density Functional Theory (HOMO and LUMO) and it was revealed that resveratrol had the highest stability based on its low energy gap. Our results predict that the three compounds are potential drug candidates with domiciled therapeutic functions against oxidative stress-mediated diseases. Numerical modeling analysis was used to assess the suitable electrical resistivity arrays for the characterization of geological structures, including dyke, horst, graben, sub-vertical, and vertical structures. These geological structures usually make up the aquifers interested in the hydrogeological evaluation of crystalline basement terrains. Six electrode configurations, including Wenner alpha (α), Wenner beta (β), Wenner gamma (γ), Schlumberger array, dipole-dipole array, and pole-dipole array, were used to assess the geological structures for groundwater exploration. The synthetic models of the geological structures were generated using RES2DMOD code, and 5% noise was added to all the models. The generated models were inverted using the RES2DINV code. The results show that the most suitable arrays for dyke and graben structures are Wenner alpha, while Wenner beta is the most suitable for the horst structure. The Schlumberger array was the best for both sub-vertical and vertical structures. This study has demonstrated the efficacy of numerical modeling in assessing the best resistivity arrays for 2D electrical resistivity imaging for groundwater exploration prior to geophysical field investigation.

Several causes of infertility have been identified, and several papers have documented some compounds that cause infertility. One of the compounds reported to be toxic to the reproductive system is cyanide. In the management of infertility, various mechanisms ranging from synthetic drugs, natural products and supplements have been employed. Quercetin is an antioxidant supplement that has been used in the treatment of a variety of ailments. This work is aimed at investigating the role of quercetin in attenuating spermato-toxicity and testicular-histopathology induced by cyanide. Seventy-two (72) male wistar rat (weight 190 g ± 10 g) were divided into nine groups (n = 8) except for groups 4 and 5 with (n = 16). Group 1 (control) received physiological saline while Groups 2 and 3 received 0.5 and 1 mg/kg body weight (bwt) cyanide respectively for 56 days, groups 4 and 5 received 0.5 and 1 mg/kg bwt cyanide respectively for 30 days. At day 30, eight animals were sacrificed from Groups 4 and 5 and the remaining eight (8) rats were subdivided into groups (6 and 7) and were given 20 and 40 mg/kg bwt of quercetin respectively for twenty-six days. Co-administration of cyanide and quercetin at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg cyanide +20 mg/kg quercetin and 1 mg/kg cyanide +40 mg/kg quercetin were given to group 8 and 9 respectively for 56 days. Significant decreases in sperm parameters (count, motile and normal sperm) and increases in malondiadehyde concentration were observed in the cyanide treated groups. Testicular histoarchitecture showed few to no spermatozoa in the lumen of rats treated with cyanide. All these effects were attenuated by quercetin. In conclusion, quercetin regulates testicular histopathology induced by cyanide in Wistar rats. Fallowing is considered an important management strategy for the restoration of soil productivity. Therefore, a three-year fallow of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), mexican sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia) and elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) was established at Landmark University, Nigeria between 2016 – 2019. Leaf nutrient concentrations of maize (Zea mays) planted with soils taken from each fallowed plots after three years were also determined. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. Soil samples were collected from each fallow plots for physical and chemical analysis (bulk density, porosity, moisture content, particle size, dispersion ratio, soil erosion loss, soil organic matter (SOM), total N, available P, exchangeables K, Ca, Mg, CEC and pH.) before and at the end of the experiment. Means of data collected were separated using Tukey's HSD test at p = 0.05. Tithonia fallow improved soil properties and leaf nutrient concentration of maize compared with Pennisetum and Cajanus fallows. The order was Tithonia > Pennisetum > Cajanus. This was adduced to the regular return of plant residues to the soil in Tithonia fallow which resulted in high SOM (Tithonia increased SOM by about 23%, 7.5%, and 20%, respectively, compared with the initial soil, Pennisetum and Cajanus fallows) and increases soil N, P, K, Ca, Mg, CEC and pH and also stabilized soil structure by increasing porosity, moisture content and reducing bulk density, dispersion ratio, and soil loss. Several novel functional peptides have been successfully extracted from plant storage proteins. This study investigated the degree of hydrolysis, peptide yield, amino acid constituents, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), alpha amylase inhibitory and in vitro antioxidant activities of cashew (Anarcardium occidentale) nut proteins (CNP) hydrolysates (CNPHs). Cashew nut proteins (albumin and globulin) were hydrolysed using pancreatin, Alcalase and trypsin. The peptide yield and degree of hydrolysis (DH) of CNP by pancreatin (75.69 ± 0.84%; 37.39 ± 0.31) was significantly higher than those by Alcalase (61.67 ± 0.55%; 23.87 ± 0.23) and trypsin (43.33 ± 0.45%; 11 ± 0.15). The inhibition of ACE by albumin and globulin hydrolysates was concentration dependent. At 1.2 mg/mL, ACE-inhibitory activity of pancreatic cashew nut globulin (CNGH) hydrolysate (51.65 ± 1.2%) was significantly higher than those of Alcalase (34.603 ± 0.65%) and tryptic (29.92 ± 0.73%) CNGHs. Cashew nut albumin hydrolysate (CNAH) demonstrated concentration-dependent alpha-amylase inhibition (IC50 0.17 ± 0.02–0.41 ± 0.021 mg/mL). The order of inhibition was tryptic > Alcalase > pancreatic CNAHs. The pancreatic hydrolysates of both albumin and globulin fractions displayed the highest DPPH antioxidant activity, while pancreatic CNAH was the most potent superoxide anion scavenger. These findings therefore posit that cashew nut globulin and albumin hydrolysates are laden with useful bioactive peptides that may be further explored for regulation of blood pressure and sugar in hypertensive and diabetic in vivo models., Cashew nut protein, Antioxidants, Globulin and albumin hydrolysates, ACE and Alpha amylase inhibition.

Although indigenous forest management practices have been used effectively by local people in the management and conservation of forest resources, these practices are eroding, causing negative consequences on the welfare of the people and their forests. To stem the erosion of the indigenous practices and instead stimulate, preserve, or improve their use, this study determines the socioeconomic factors that drive the household's use of the practices in the management and conservation of plant species of non-wood forest products (NWFPs). The study was carried out in Nigeria derived savannah. Data was collected from 200 randomly selected households in 10 randomly selected forest communities. Multivariate probit model was used to estimate the socioeconomic factors that influence the simultaneous use of indigenous forest management practices by households. Given multiple use of the practices, the result shows that the indigenous forest management practices used by the households are selective weeding (82.98%), controlled harvesting (82.45%), enrichment planting (75.53%), fire breaks (76.06%) and indigenous protective mechanism (45.74%). The majority (71.28%) of the respondents said they managed bush mango (Irvingia gabonensis and wombulu) using the practices, while the lowest proportion (21.28%) managed bush buck (Gongronema latifolium). The result of the multivariate probit model shows that virtually all the indigenous forest management practices are positively and significantly associated and are thus, complements. However, local protective mechanisms and controlled harvesting, local protective mechanisms and selective weeding, and local protective mechanisms and enrichment planting are not significantly associated. Farming occupation significantly increases the likelihood of simultaneous use of controlled harvesting, enrichment planting, and fire breaks as indigenous forest management practices in the management and conservation of NWFP. On the other hand, age significantly reduces the likelihood of the use of controlled harvesting and selective weeding.
