Illnesses associated with consuming infected milk and milk products are a widespread problem in low and middle-income countries. Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a bacterium commonly found in raw milk and causes foodborne diseases ranging from mild diarrhea to severe hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. This study aimed to investigate the virulence gene and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli strains isolated from raw milk in dairy farms in and around Bahir Dar town. Raw milk samples (n = 128) collected from December 2021 to July 2022 were cultured, and E. coli strains were isolated using standard methods. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli strains were identified genotypically by the presence of the virulence markers using a single-plex polymerase chain reaction. The antibiotic susceptibility testing of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli isolates was done by the agar disk diffusion method. In total, 32 E. coli isolates were recovered from milk samples from lactating animals. PCR screening of these isolates resulted in 19 (59.3%) positives for Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. The stx2 gene was detected in 53% of cases, followed by stx1 (31%) and eae (16%. The STEC isolates were highly sensitive to ciprofloxacin (94.7%) and kanamycin (89.5%), while exhibiting significant resistance to amoxicillin (89.5%) and streptomycin (73.7%). The present study points out the occurrence of virulent and antibiotic-resistant Shiga toxin-producing E. coli strains in raw milk that could pose a potential risk to public health. Further analysis by whole genome sequencing is necessary for an in-depth assessment and understanding of their virulence and resistance factors. Moreover, large-scale studies are needed to identify the prevalence and potential risk factors and to prevent the spread of antibiotic-resistant STEC strains in the milk production chain.

Understanding the drivers of urban growth and spatiotemporal land use change is important for rational land use and sustainable urban development. Based on the land use data, GIS data of explanatory variables, experts' knowledge and field observation, the study used a binary logistic regression model (BLRM) to analyze factors that drive rapid urban growth in Bahir Dar city, Ethiopia, using the LOGISTICREG module in IDRISI Selva software. Nine factors were used to reflect the influence of proximity and physical factors on urban growth from 1984 to 2019. This model helped in quantifying and identifying the factors of urban growth, which includes topography (slope, elevation and aspect) and accessibility (Dis. to the main road, Dis. to international airport, Dis. to CBD, Dis. to existing built-up area, Dis. to forest land and Dis. to water body). Furthermore, urban growth probability maps were created based on LRM results, revealing that the biggest urban growth would occur around existing built-up areas along the main roads and near Bahir Dar international airport. The Relative Operating Characteristic (ROC) values of 0.85, 0.90 and 0.93 and PCP values of 96.72 %, 98.46 % and 98.51 % indicate the urban growth probability maps are valid and BLRM had an ideal ability to predict urban growth. So, the study highlighted the relation between urban growth and its drivers in Bahir Dar, giving a decision making framework for better land use management and resource allocation.

Background: Contraception helps prevent unplanned pregnancies and mother to child Human Immune Virus (HIV) transmission among human immune virus positive women. Ethiopia has made remarkable progress in increasing contraceptive use rate but there is still a disparity of contraceptive use within the country. Although there were some studies about contraceptive use in Ethiopia, evidences about contraceptive use among sexually active HIV positive women was limited. Understanding the extent of and barriers in Ethiopia is important for learning how to best improve level of contraceptive use. Therefore, this study aimed to assess contraceptives use and associated factors among HIV positive sexually active women at anti-retroviral therapy clinic at Felege Hiwot Referral Hospital ART clinic in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia., Method: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from June 01-30, 2018 among (n = 308) randomly selected HIV positive women at Felege Hiwot Referral Hospital. Data were collected using a pretested interviewer-administered questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Survey logistic regression analysis was employed to identify determinants of contraceptive use. Statistical significance was declared at p-value <0.05., Results: Out of three hundred eight participants, 118 (38.3%) reported contraceptive use at the time of the study. Injectable is the most preferred (43.5%) contraceptive method. Participants with age 15-34 years (AOR = 3.09, 95%CI: 1.59-5.99), disclosed their status to sex partner, (AOR = 2.7, 95%CI: 1.14-6.66), had history of contraception use; (AOR = 3.36, 95%CI: 1.68-6.74), were sexually active (AOR = 5.45, 95%CI: 2.72-10.91) had higher odds of contraceptive use. However, participants who had drinking habit (AOR = 4.35, 95%CI: 1.82-10.38) had lower odds of contraceptive use., Conclusion: A significant proportion of HIV positive women had low level of contraceptive use that was lower than the national recommended level. Participants with younger age (15-34years), who disclosed HIV status to sex partner, had history of contraceptive use, and who were sexually active six months prior to the study were more likely to use contraception. However, participants who had drinking habit were less likely to use contraception. A diabetes foot ulcer is the commonest non-traumatic reason for the amputation of the lower extremities. All adults with diabetes should undergo comprehensive foot evaluation at least annually, but for high-risk individuals with diabetes more frequently by a health care provider and daily by the people themselves. Nurses' knowledge and attitude are fundamental to conduct a diabetes foot risk assessment and provide foot care for known diabetes person. Knowledge and attitude of nurses about the assessment and risk, identification of diabetes foot are not well studied in Ethiopia, especially in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed to assess nurses' knowledge and attitude towards diabetes foot ulcer in Bahir Dar, North West Ethiopia. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Bahir Dar city administration hospitals from January 1st to 5th, 2019. The study participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Nurses' level of knowledge and attitude towards diabetes foot ulcer assessment and management determined by using multiple-choice questions of nurse's knowledge and attitude questionnaires. The association between the independent and dependent variables was assessed. In this study, the overall proportions of nurses' knowledge and attitude towards diabetes foot assessment and management were 54.4% and 43.3% respectively. Age less than 30 years old (AOR = 2.15, 95%CI: 1.10, 4.19; P = 0.025), the nurse who graduates from a governmental institution (AOR = 3.05, 95% CI: 1.64, 5.69; P < 0.001) and use the internet as a source of knowledge (AOR = 0.55, 95%CI: 0.31, 0.96; P = 0.035) was significantly associated with nurses' knowledge towards diabetes foot care. Age less than 30 years old (AOR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.16, 3.35; P = 0.012)and the nurse level of qualification (AOR = 0.39, 95% CI: 0.20, 0.78; P = 0.007)were significantly associated with nurses' level of attitude towards diabetes foot care. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the important gaps in nurses' knowledge and attitude towards diabetes foot care. Nurses' insufficient knowledge and non-favorable attitude towards diabetes foot care compromise health care standard diabetes care. Therefore, a comprehensive revision of nursing curricula across local tertiary learning institutes required qualified instructors and a strengthened regulatory body (especially private ones), and validated source of information for allowing nurses to update their knowledge is warranted., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Background: Breastfeeding can offer the ideal food for infants. It contains all the necessary nutrients for the growthand development of infants and antibodies that can protect from many childhood illnesses. Understanding the extent of, and barriers to exclusive breastfeeding in Ethiopia is important for learning how to best improve level of exclusive breastfeeding. No single study has been conducted on first-time mothers in the country. . Therefore, this study aimed to assess prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding practice and associated factors among first-time mothers in Bahir Dar city, North West Ethiopia., Method: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April, 2016 among (n = 400) randomly selected first-time mothers in Bahir Dar city, northwest Ethiopia. Data were collected using structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version20., bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were carried out. Odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was used to measure the strength of association. Statistical significance was declared at P -value <0.05., Results: Prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding practice 24 h before the survey was 57.3% (95%CI: 52.3%-62%). Mothers not being married (aOR = 2.79, 95 %CI: 1.08, 7.17), supported by their husband (aOR = 4.15, 95%CI: 2.13, 6.28), with no breast complication (aOR = 3.66, 95% CI: 2.13, 6.28), who had four or more antenatal care (aOR = 2.51, 95%CI: 1.49, 4.23) were more likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding., Conclusion: A significant proportion of mothers had a low level of exclusive breastfeeding practice that was lower than the national recommended level. Mothers not being married, supported by their husbands, with no breast problems who had four or more antenatal care visits were more likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding.
