The process of bioconversion of solid organic wastes through vermicomposting justifies the environmental message for sustainability such as reduce, recycle and reuse of wastes. In the present study, wastes derived from two different types of paper mill sludge (primary and secondary), was used for their bioconversion through the vermicomposting process using an indigenous species of earthworm (Perionyx excavatus). The maturity and stability stage of vermicompost production was assessed using FT-IR, GC-MS and TG analyses. During vermicomposting, different biochemical functional groups present in the wastes have shown differential chemical alteration and turnover as revealed by FT-IR spectroscopy. This study has also confirmed the trend of biodegradation of complex substances like lignin, cellulose, proteins etc. and thereby demonstrates the extent of mineralization. TG spectral analysis had revealed a mass loss of 80% and 71% in vermicompost produced from primary and secondary sludge respectively. GC-MS studies have also shown the presence of several humic acids like octadecanoic acid, heptadecanoic acid etc. in the decomposing substances demonstrating as an indicator of the maturity of products. This was further confirmed by the decrease of humification index which focuses the combined action of both earthworms and microbes in the degradation of organic wastes. The present study has highlighted the role of an indigenous earthworm in converting specific industrial wastes especially by recording the point of maturation using humic acids an indicator of the quality of decomposing of wastes following several instrumental applications.

The generation of three-dimensional superb packages of compact hexagonal periodic assembly with multifaceted layers was demonstrated using Poly (styrene-butylcrylate-acrylic acid) on glass substrates. The synthesized P(St-BA-AA) microspheres were used to formulate a fast drying UV curable terpolymer microspheres printing ink for the generation of colloidal crystal microdots on ink-jet paper with remarkable colours. The terpolymer microspheres and their formulated terpolymer ink undergo self-assembly to form blue monochromatic and viewing angle dependent tunable colours, thus affirming the photonic nature of the generated colloidal crystal films. Unlike other printing techniques which usually make use of specialized tools, this study generated a well ordered coloured tunable assembly of spherical shaped core-shell colloidal crystal microdots on the surface of an inkjet-paper by manually writing the as-synthesized P(St-BA-AA) UV curable printing ink microdots on it. The TEM analysis showed core and shell sizes of 198/50nm and 176/30nm for P(St-BA-AA)1 and P(St- BA-AA)2 respectively. Whenever the prepared terpolymer microspheres are used within the heating and transition temperatures of 383 °C and 110 °C, their thermal stability is retained. The Application of a combination of enzymes is the best alternative to reduce the use of chemicals in the paper industry. Bacillus sp. NG-27 and Bacillus nealsonii PN-11 are known to produce thermoalkali stable xylanse (X) and mannanase (M) respectively having potential for pulp biobleaching. The Present study, reports the production of a mixture of X + M by co-culturing of strains in SSF and standardizing its application for pulp biobleaching. Production of enzymes by co-cultivation in SSF was optimized by statistical methods. Substantial increase in the yield of enzymes; 3.61 fold of xylanase and 37.71 fold of mannanase was achieved. Application of enzyme cocktail for pulp biobleaching resulted in a 45.64% reduction of kappa number with 55 IU g−1odp of enzyme dose (xylanase:mannanase; 3:1) at pH 8.0 in 1h at 65 °C along with significant increase in brightness (11%) and whiteness (75%). The Same quality of paper as made up from chemical treated pulp can be made from enzyme-treated pulp with 30% less use of chlorine. Structural analysis of enzyme-treated pulp showed dissolution of hemicellulose as indicated by pores, cracks and increased roughness all over the surface. This research explains the conversion of waste tobacco stalks into nitrocellulose to try to recover as much chemical potential contained in the biomass material as possible. Simple pioneering experiments were conducted using pulping tobacco stalks with a moisture content of 10.17 wt% and the soda pulping method being applied to produce cellulose pulp. The cellulose pulp was bleached using calcium hypochlorite to produce a dry white lignin-free pulp, which was subjected to nitration. The mixture used was 67% nitric acid and 98% sulphuric acid, and the acid ratio was varied between 3:7 and 7:3 v/v. Nitration time was varied between 5 and 25 min. This process produced nitrocellulose with all the various conditions. The nitrocellulose obtained with nitrogen content between 11 – 11.5% v/v was characterized using its solubility in acetone. An optimum nitrating mixture of 1:1 v/v with a nitration time of 5 min was used to produce nitrocellulose from tobacco stalks using soda pulping. The results show a great potential for tobacco farming countries to reduce their nitrocellulose import bill using this process.

Iron ore froth flotation has recently been used to obtain pure minerals due to the depletion of high-grade deposits. Amine collectors have often been used in cationic reverse iron ore flotation to achieve the separation with quartz impurities. The main problem associated with these collectors is related to the control of frothing properties and the high cost of amine reagents. In this paper, we report the benefits of partial replacement of amine collectors with a frother in reverse cationic flotation of hematite. Surface tension and batch flotation experimental results indicated for the first time that replacing Flotigam EDA, an etheramine collector by more than 10% improved the flotation performance in both grade and recovery of hematite. It was also noted mild hematite entrainments for lower frother dosages whilst reagents cost estimation indicated profitability per ton of iron recovered. At higher frother dosage however, higher quartz recoveries were observed as a result of entrainment which led to satisfactory results in terms of iron grade in the sink, but results showed higher costs of reagents than when collector was used alone. From observed results, it was concluded that partially replacing amine collector by a frother does improve the performance of the flotation globally regardless of pronounced entrainment that was mainly due the mineralogy of the ore with notable amounts of locked particles in the lower sizes. This study focuses on the processing, characterization, and sugar and ethanol production potential of red-fleshed sweet potatoes (RFSP) and white-fleshed sweet potatoes (WFSP). These feedstocks were used for the production of sugar; and bioethanol from its pulp by the action of five different microbes. The characterization of raw sweet potatoes and desired products of raw sugar, and bioethanol were carried out through proximate analyses, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) method, measurement of pol% by using a Refractometer, Polarimeter, Saccharimeter. The proximate analyses of feedstocks show the presence of a respectable amount of dry solids 25 ± 0.03g/100g with a lower amount of fat (0.025 ± 0.002) and ash (0.533 ± 0.076) contents make them promising crops for the production of sugar and ethanol. Comparatively, RFSP raw sugar (oZ: 95.25 ± 0.05) is considered purer than WFSP raw sugar (oZ: 94.6 ± 0.015). FTIR spectrums of the presently studied raw sugar and bioethanol have characteristic bands. It shows that the raw sugars products are rich in sucrose content, and confirms that the bioethanol was produced from the selected raw materials is at a satisfactory level. The efficiency of microbes was evaluated by taking a sample from the fermented wash to measure the residual sugar in (oBrix). Comparatively, fermented wash with sweet potato extracted yeast was found 14% Brixo (consume 86% of pulp) in RFSP, and 17% of Brixo (consume 83% pulp) in WFSP within 24 hours of fermentation. The alcohol level of bioethanol's produced from RFSP and WFSP pulps was tested using Ebuliometer and the result was found to be ranged 78 °C – 80 °C which is closer to the boiling point of absolute anhydrous alcohol (78.3 °C). The objective of this research is to assess the effect of enzymatic treatment of guava puree on the physicochemical parameters of the juice. Pectinases from Aspergillus niger were applied to the puree at 43 ± 3 °C under constant stirring. Enzyme concentrations used were: 0.033 % (w/w), 0.055% (w/w), 0.078 % (w/w) and 0.1 % (w/w). For each enzyme concentration, the treatment times were varied from 3 – 90 min. Physicochemical parameters of raw puree and enzymatically treated juice were determined. These were: viscosity, pH, electric conductivity, protein and polyphenol content, galacturonic acid content, color, TSS, and antioxidant capacity. Particle distribution, homogeneity of raw puree and juice samples dried extracts were assessed using a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). A 91% viscosity decrease was recorded for each enzyme concentration after 3 min of enzyme reaction. That drecrase was accompanied by an increase in galacturonic acid content with increasing depectinization factors. Enzyme treatment of guava puree led to a decrease in pH, protein and polyphenol contents and an increase in conductivity and color. Analysis of FESEM images of guava samples bestowed a decrease in particle size, a scattering of particles in the medium, an increase in continuous phase proportion and an improvement of sample homogeneity with increasing values of processing parameters, due to the breaking-down of bigger particles and the solubilization during depectinization., Pectinases, hydrolysis, guava pulp, juice, FESEM

Artificial fruit ripening agents have become increasingly popular in recent years. During the ripening, various ripening agents are used for the ripening of banana fruits. The effects of various ripening agents of banana fruits (variety: Malbhog) were studied. Seven treatments consisting of distilled water, Gibberellic acid (GA3) @ 100 ppm, GA3 @ 200 ppm, GA3 @ 300 ppm, kinetin @ 3 ppm, kinetin @ 5 ppm, and kinetin @ 7 ppm were laid out in a Completely Randomized Design with three replications. The maximum loss in weight (9.195%), Total Soluble Solids (20.33˚B), the highest color score (6), pH (4.767), Total Soluble Solids/Titratable Acidity TA (34.23), and Pulp peel ratio (2.84) were observed in banana sprayed with distilled water whereas the minimum value for TSS (12.67˚B), pulp peel ratio (1.813), peel color rating (2.67), TSS/TA (15.32) were observed in GA3 @ 300 ppm treated fruits. The maximum (32.67 days) and the minimum (18.33 days) shelf-life was observed in GA3 @ 300 ppm and distilled water respectively. This research will help in the regulation of ripening as per the needs of consumers and the distance of the market. In horticulture, it will help to extend storage life and reduce quality and economic loss.

The current study was performed in order to evaluate the effect of using argane by-products (oil cake and pulp) as fattening diet of lambs. This was achieved through an experimental lamb fattening investigation using argan by-product as feeding source and the exploration of the fattened lamb performance, carcass characteristics and the chemical fatty acid composition of the quality produced meat. Twenty fattening Sardi lambs (26 ± 0.5 kg body weight and six months old) were divided into two (n = 10) homogenous experimental and control groups. Argane by-products (ABP) and traditional (CF) diets have been used for feeding the experimental and control groups respectively during a period of 75 days. The results obtained for both groups were used to determine the effect of feeding argane by-products on animal weight, average daily gain (ADG), carcass weight, muscle pH values, dressing %, dry matter, ash, ether extract, crude fiber, crude protein, and fatty acid composition. The obtained results showed that the experimental ABP group lambs had higher average daily gain and meat chemical, crude protein and ash and proportion of C18:0 than the control CF group lambs, while the control CF group had a higher feed conversion ratio, ether extract, mesenteric and perirenal fat. The results obtained for pH0 and pH24 were similar for both explored groups. The obtained results showed thus that the use of ABP as a diet to fattening lambs increased their performance and lean meat yield., argane by-products, fattening, performance, lambs, meat.

This paper presents the findings of an experimental investigation on optimizing pozzolanic activity of a blend of Rice Husks (RH), Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) and Broken Bricks (BB) to form pozzolana that would have pozzolanic activity comparable to natural pozzolanas. Four ratios of RH, BB, and SBE were burnt in the Fixed Bed Kiln (FBK). The starting ratio had 20 kg of RH, 0 kg of BB and 4 kg of SBE. The amount of BB was increased by 2 kg each to a maximum of 6 kg as the mass of SBE was kept constant. The resultant ashes were subjected to various pozzolanic tests. This included; saturated lime test and compressive strength analysis. It was observed that the calcined blend with 10: 1: 2 mix of RH: BB: SBE exhibited the highest pozzolanic activity. This sample was mixed with acetylene lime sludge (ALS) in the ratio of 2:1 pozzolana: ALS. The compressive strengths for these cements were tested at 2 and 28 days of curing. The compressive strengths of this cement met the required EN standards for Portland pozzolana cement.

Lime is one of the most commonly consumed medicinal plants in Indonesia, which must be dried to preserve its quality, but mostly by using traditional, ineffective drying method. Therefore, this study aims to investigate lime drying process a hybrid solar drying method. The hybrid solar dryer consisted of a solar dryer and Liquefied Petroleum Gas as the supplementary heater. The drying process was conducted until there was no significant weight decrease, with the drying temperature of 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 °C. Thin-layer modeling and quality analysis were also conducted. The experimental results indicated that 5 h was required to sufficiently dry the lime at 80 °C, while drying at 40 °C took 24 h to finish. The drying rate curve of lime suggested that lime drying mostly happened during the falling-rate period. Moreover, the average efficiency of the hybrid solar dryer ranged from 5.36% to 38.61%, which increased with temperature. From the 10 thin-layer drying models used, the Wang and Singh model was the most suitable to describe the drying behavior of lime. The effective diffusivity values of the limes and the activation energy value during hybrid solar drying were within their respective acceptable range for agricultural products. However, as the drying temperature was increased from 40 to 80 °C, the total phenolic content and vitamin C content decreased, from 87.3 to 27.8 mg GAE/100 g dry limes and 0.118 to 0.015 ppm, respectively. It can be concluded that hybrid solar dryer is able to sufficiently dry the lime, with acceptable drying time and dryer efficiency, although using high drying temperature will decrease the quality of dried lime. As per the World Health Organization (WHO) and Global Hunger Index, the incidence of malnutrition and Vitamin-A deficiency in preschool-age children is higher in South-East Asian countries. Therefore, this study was envisaged to formulate value-added flavoured buffalo milk and to carry out the sensory evaluation, nutritional analysis, storage characteristics and total carotene content of the developed product. Flavoured buffalo milk was prepared by incorporation of Cucurbita pepo (Pumpkin) pulp and ground sugar at a concentration of 15% and 10%, respectively. The formulation was found preeminent by panellists and then subjected to nutritional analysis and storage studies at room temperature following “in bottle heat treatment”. Nutritional analysis revealed that the protein, fat, total carbohydrates, total ash and moisture content of pumpkin flavoured buffalo milk were 3.07%, 5.21%, 12.63%, 0.61% and 78.48%, respectively. The storage study of flavoured buffalo milk showed a significantly (p < 0.05) declined score in colour and appearance as well as flavour only after day 90. The overall acceptability score also declined significantly (p < 0.05) after day 60 of storage. Though the sensory score declined gradually during the storage period, the product was liked by the panellist even till day 180. The carotene content of pumpkin flavoured buffalo milk was 1.2 mg/100 g at day 0 and it decreased significantly as storage prolongs. The nutritional components were not affected significantly during the 180 days storage period. Several research studies have been performed to minimise the hygroscopicity of ammonium nitrate for increasing its commercial value and decreasing the nitrogen content. In this study, the hygroscopicity of ammonium nitrate was reduced using silicic acid, calcium lignosulfonate, and sodium silicate in the two-stage vacuum ammonium nitrate production process. Tetrapleura tetraptera, claim to be beneficial for curing of human ailments. In this study, we determined phytochemicals, antioxidant and metal chelating capacity in the pulp, seeds and whole fruit (mixture of pulp and seeds) of T. tetraptera. Phytochemicals (flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, tannins, steroids, saponins and phenols) were examined in aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the pulp, seeds and whole fruit. The recovery of all compounds was satisfactory, in the range of 90%–108%. The screening test revealed the presence of many phytochemicals in either one or both extracts. After the qualitative analysis, UV-Spectrophotometer was used to quantify phenols, flavonoids, saponins and alkaloids where higher phytochemical concentrations were recorded in the pulp followed by whole fruit and then the seeds. The metal chelating capacity was determined using EDTA standard, and was in the order of pulp>whole fruit>seeds. Also, the pulp was established to exhibit much antioxidant activity as compared to the whole fruit or seeds. This study therefore supports the use of T. tetraptera in traditional systems of medicine owing to its active chemical compounds, and has given many vital insights on which part of T. tetraptera fruit to consume as concentrations of these compounds varies in the pulp, seeds and whole fruit., Food science, Pharmaceutical chemistry, Tetrapleura tetraptera; Phytochemicals; Antioxidant; Metal chelating capacity

Treated palm oil mill effluents (POME) is of great concern as it still has colour from its dissolved organics which may pollute receiving water bodies. In this study, the removal of colour from treated palm oil mill effluent were investigated through adsorption studies using carbon derived from wastewater sludge (WSC). Sludge from activated sludge plants were dried and processed to produce WSC. In this study, three different bed depths of WSC were used: 5 cm, 10 cm, and 15 cm. For each bed depth, the flowrate was varied at three different values: 100 mL/hr, 50 mL/hr and 25 mL/hr. It was found that at bed depth of 5 cm, the breakthrough curves were occurred at 360 min, 150 min and 15 min for flowrates of 25, 50 and 100 mL/hr respectively. It was observed that at a particular depth the exhaustion time for column reduced as flow rate increases. Kinetic models, Adams-Bohart and Yoon-Nelson were used to analyze the performance of the adsorption. It was found that rate constant for Adams Bohart model decreased with the increase in bed depth. Adsorption capacity obtained from Adams-Bohart model ranged from 2676.19 mg/L up to 8938.78 mg/L. The maximum adsorption capacity increases with smaller bed depth. For Yoon-Nelson model, the rate constant decreases with increase in bed depth. The required time for 50% breakthrough obtained from the models ranged from 17.01 to 104.17 minutes for all three bed depths. The reduction of colour was found to be effective at all bed depths. The experimental data was best described by both models as with higher values of correlation coefficient (R2).

A plastic tubing system operated under vacuum is usually used to collect sap from maple trees during spring time to produce maple syrup. This system is commonly sanitized with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to remove microbial contamination colonizing the system during the sugar season. Questions have been raised whether IPA would contribute to the leaching of plastic residues in maple sap and syrup coming from sanitized systems. First, an extraction experiment was performed in the lab on commercial plastic tubing materials that were submitted to IPA under harsh conditions. The results of the GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of many compounds that served has target for further tests. Secondly, tests were done on early and mid-season maple sap and syrup coming from many sugarbushes using IPA or not to determine potential concentrations of plastic residues. Results obtained from sap and syrup samples showed that no quantifiable (< 1–75 μg/L) concentration of any plastic molecules tested was determined in all samples coming from IPA treated or not treated systems. However, some samples of first sap run used as a rinse solution to be discarded before the season start and that were coming from non sanitized or IPA sanitized systems, showed quantifiable concentrations of chemical residue such as ultraviolet protector (octabenzone). These results show that IPA can be safely used to sanitize maple sap collection system in regards to the leaching of plastic residues in maple sap and syrup and reinforced the need to thoroughly rinse the tubing system at the beginning of the season for both sanitized and non sanitized systems.

In the last few decades, the demand for reversible heating and cooling systems has increased significantly, together with the need to generate energy in a more efficient and sustainable way. Consequently, the concept of solar photovoltaic (PV) powered heat pumps (HP) has become very attractive in order to match the heating/cooling demand with a renewable and environmentally-friendly energy source. This paper presents a review of the different solutions for PV-HP systems that have been studied theoretically and/or experimentally tested, and of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that were mainly used. An analysis of these traditional KPIs has been performed and their boundaries were identified. As a result, new KPIs (PR25, PRref,25, SPFPV-HP and SPFPV-HP,ref,25) were proposed for trying to mitigate such limitations, as well as for evaluating not only the quality of the HP and the PV system, but also the quality of their integration and the renewable character of the whole PV-HP system. In vehicle crashworthiness design optimization detailed system evaluation capable of producing reliable results are basically achieved through high-order numerical computational (HNC) models such as the dynamic finite element model, mesh-free model etc. However the application of these models especially during optimization studies is basically challenged by their inherent high demand on computational resources, conditional stability of the solution process, and lack of knowledge of viable parameter range for detailed optimization studies. The absorbable energy monitoring scheme (AEMS) presented in this paper suggests a new design protocol that attempts to overcome such problems in evaluation of vehicle structure for crashworthiness. The implementation of the AEMS involves studying crash performance of vehicle components at various absorbable energy ratios based on a 2DOF lumped-mass-spring (LMS) vehicle impact model. This allows for prompt prediction of useful parameter values in a given design problem. The application of the classical one-dimensional LMS model in vehicle crash analysis is further improved in the present work by developing a critical load matching criterion which allows for quantitative interpretation of the results of the abstract model in a typical vehicle crash design. The adequacy of the proposed AEMS for preliminary vehicle crashworthiness design is demonstrated in this paper, however its extension to full-scale design-optimization problem involving full vehicle model that shows greater structural detail requires more theoretical development.

For developing the stannite type quarterly crystal photocatalyst, the electronic structure and optical properties of ZnAg2GeSe4, ZnAg2Ge0.93Fe0.07Se4 and ZnAg2Ge0.86Fe0.14Se4 were calculated and compared with the parent stannite type quarterly crystal, ZnAg2GeS4. First of all, the four functionals, such as GGA with PBE, GGA with RPBE, GGA with WC and LDA with CA-PZ functionals were used for primary screening of electronic band structure and structural geometry for ZnAg2GeS4 while the band gap was in 0.93, 0.97, 0.77 and 0.67 eV, respectively. It must be mentioned that the experimental value of ZnAg2GeS4 was 0.94 eV so that the GGA with PBE showed the overlapping value of band gap. The main focus of this paper is to evaluate the band structure of newly predicted the stannite type quarterly crystal, ZnAg2GeSe4 using four methods replacing the Sulfur atom by Serium atom on ZnAg2GeS4. The band gap for four methods, such as GGA with PBE, GGA with RPBE, GGA with WC and LDA with CA-PZ functionals, were calculated in 0.84 eV, 0.92 eV, 0.68 eV and 0.58 eV. Afterward, Fe atom was doped by two portions, like 7% and 14%, to make the empirical formula, ZnAg2Ge0.93Fe0.07Se4 and ZnAg2Ge0.86Fe0.14Se4. The numerical values of band gaps for ZnAg2Ge0.93Fe0.07Se4 and ZnAg2Ge0.86Fe0.14Se4 were 0.43 eV, 0.53 eV, 0.35 eV and 0.18 eV and 0.24 eV, 0.31 eV, 0.18 eV and 0.08 eV, respectively, using the four respected DFT methods. For their contributed orbitals of each atom on crystal, the density of state and the partial density of state for ZnAg2GeSe4, ZnAg2Ge0.93Fe0.07Se4 and ZnAg2Ge0.86Fe0.14Se4 crystals were simulated through the GGA with PBE method as standard regarding the calculation of band gap study comparison with experimental magnitude. For giving the further information about the nature in case of optical evidence, the six optical properties, such as absorption, reflection, refractive index, conductivity, dielectric function and loss function were calculated, and make a comparative study. In case of UV light absorption in lighten to optical parameters, the ZnAg2Ge0.86Fe0.14Se4 can show the highest absorption up to convenience energy region as photocatalyst., Band gap, Density of States, Photocatalyst, Dielectric function.

Anodised titanium has a long history as a coating structure for implants due to its bioactive and ossified surface, which promotes rapid bone integration. In response to the growing literature on anodised titanium, this article is the first to revisit the evolution of anodised titanium as an implant coating. The review reports the process and mechanisms for the engineering of distinctive anodised titanium structures, the significant factors influencing the mechanisms of its formation, bioactivity, as well as recent pre- and post-surface treatments proposed to improve the performance of anodised titanium. The review then broadens the discussion to include future functional trends of anodised titanium, ranging from the provision of higher surface energy interactions in the design of biocomposite coatings (template stencil interface for mechanical interlock) to techniques for measuring the bone-to-implant contact (BIC), each with their own challenges. Vermiwash is a liquid extract produced from vermicompost in a medium where earthworms are richly populated. It comprises a massive decomposer bacteria count, mucus, vitamins, different bioavailable minerals, hormones, enzymes, different antimicrobial peptides, etc. This paper aimed to assess how these natural products in vermiwash suppressed the pathogen and pests. Thus, we have reviewed the importance of vermiwash/vermicompost in disease control, the mechanism of disease suppression, the components of vermiwash applied in disease suppression, and pest control to use the scientific facts in agriculture to enhance the productivity of the crops. The bioactive macromolecules from the skin secretion of earthworm, coelomic fluid, and mucus directly able to defend pathogenic soil microbes against the worm and thereby freed the environment from the disease. Earthworms establish symbiotic relations with microbes, produce an essential product that supports the growth of plants, and suppress plant's root disease. Photovoltaic technology using perovskite solar cells has emerged as a potential solution in the photovoltaic makings for cost-effective manufacturing solutions deposition/coating solar cells. The hybrid perovskite-based materials possess a unique blend from low bulk snare concentrations, ambipolar, broad optical absorption properties, extended charge carrier diffusion, and charge transport/collection properties, making them favourable for solar cell applications. This paper assessed the chromium and cadmium emissions from consumption of premium motor spirit (PMS) and automotive gas oil (AGO) across the states, regions and the nation, Nigeria as a whole. This was with a view to determining the levels of per capita and land exposures to the emissions and the associated risks to humans, plants and animals. Annual fuel consumption and toxic transition metals contents were combined to estimate the annual emission rates of chromium and cadmium emissions from combustion of the PMS and AGO for a period of ten years (2009–2018). Per capita and land distributions of emissions were then calculated by using population and land areas, respectively. The results showed that total emission rates from both PMS and AGO were lowest in 2012, with 1,102 million mg/yr of chromium and 3,253 million mg/yr of cadmium, and highest in 2018, with 14,454 million mg/yr of chromium and 39,580 million mg/yr of cadmium. Emission rates per capita were also lowest in 2012, with 7 mg/yr.person of chromium and 20 mg/yr.person of cadmium, and highest in 2018 with 74 mg/yr.person of chromium and 201 mg/yr.person of cadmium. Land distribution was lowest in 2012, with 1.19 mg/yr.km2 of chromium and 3.52 mg/yr.km2 of cadmium, and highest in 2018, with 15.63 mg/yr.km2 of chromium and 42.81 mg/yr.km2 of cadmium. Comparing to regulatory limits, the risks of humans, animals and plants be poisoned are very high. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have been used to monitor gas emissions for research projects, though downwash, the airflow produced by the UAV rotors, is potentially capable of artificially altering gas concentration measurements. Anemometers, placed at ten different distances below a 6-rotor UAV, measured air speeds in the downwash region. The collected data was used in combination with UAV rotor speed data to determine the stabilization time of the downwash region after the UAV has returned to a stable hovering position. The stabilization time will determine the amount of time after UAV movement until reliable concentration readings can be obtained within the downwash region. In this paper, long-term high-temperature corrosion at 500 °C and high-temperature corrosion at the melting temperature of a corrosive ash mixture were examined because the use of high-temperature equipment such as boilers and gas turbines increases year over year. To investigate the optimum cavitation processing conditions for the specimens used in high-temperature corrosion tests, the surface properties of each processed specimen were examined. In specimens processed using multifunction cavitation (MFC), the compressive residual stress was high when the processing time was 10 min and the Cr content on the surface was greater than on the surface of an unprocessed specimen. On the other hands, in specimens subjected to water-jet peening (WJP), the compressive residual stress was high when the processing time was 10 min. In the present study, the processing time was selected to be 10 min and all high-temperature corrosion tests were conducted by the coating method. Nickel-titanium shape memory alloy (NiTi) has a unique capacity to restore its initial shape after deformation, which is highly applicable to orthopaedic implantations, especially for the minimization of invasive surgeries. The high nickel content of this alloy can lead to unfavourable effects on the human body upon dissolution; thus, a reliable barrier of coatings on the NiTi surface is required to alleviate the nickel migration and increase its biocompatibility. In this paper, analyses of a titanium oxide layer development on NiTi surface using electrical discharge coating (EDC) process is presented. The recast layer thickness, crater sizes, and surface roughness were characterized based on five parameters; polarity, discharge duration, pulse interval, peak current, and gap voltage. The results show that the discharge duration is the most significant parameter to influence all responses, followed by peak current. The surface characteristics of the EDC substrate is depending on the crater formations and is highly correlated with the discharge energy intensity. A rapid bioassay is presented for determining acute toxicity directly in soil. Modifying the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) protocol 207, it uses a thin layer of moistened soil laid directly in the bottom of the bioassay jar into which the earthworms are placed and incubated. Examples are presented in comparisons between the soil contact bioassay vs. the filter paper bioassay run on Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) extracts of pesticide contaminated soil and petroleum drilling cuttings. In 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) contaminated soil (300mg/Kg), no mortality was found in soil extracts, but 100% mortality was found when exposed directly to soil. Treatment with the Daremend® product in five anaerobic/aerobic cycles slowly reduced the 24 h mortality (0%) but still showed 100% mortality at 48 h. However, severe sub-lethal effects (expulsion of celomic/bloody fluids) were reduced from 50% to 37%, and further treatment may reduce the toxicity to acceptable levels. The petroleum drilling cuttings treated by chemical oxidation (1.3% H2O2, w/w) and bioremediation (simulation of biopiles), showed a similar response, where 0% mortality in soil extracts was found, but 100% mortality with soil contact. Post-treatment with chemical oxidation resulted in a reduction in the soil contact bioassay to 3% and 13% mortality, within the accepted range (≤10%) of the OECD protocol. This paper evaluated the feasibility of using residual sugar cane bagasse ash with a high carbon content (as-received SCBA) as raw material to produce a pozzolan after controlled recalcination and grinding. Initially, the as-received SCBA was re-burned using rotary (continuous) and muffle (batch) kilns, both at 600 °C for 1 h. Next, the resulting ash was ground in a closed-circuit ball mill with an air classifier system to obtain a product with 50% passing particle size of approximately 10 μm (SCBA600). SCBA600 was then characterized in terms of oxide composition, loss on ignition, density, specific surface area, and pozzolanic activity. A hydration study was carried out using isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and mercury intrusion porosimetry. Additionally, the performance of SCBA600 in mortars was evaluated by axial compression tests. The combination of recalcination at 600 °C, low-energy ultrafine grinding of the material and classification resulted in pozzolanic SCBA. The results also showed that including SCBA600 in cement mortars reduced total accumulated heat and portlandite content in cement-based pastes, in addition to refining pore structure and significantly increasing compressive strength after 3 days of curing.

An approach towards effective utilization of fly ash and bottom ash in the construction of energy efficient buildings has been presented in this paper. Two masonry mortar grades MM3 and MM5 were considered for trial mix. Portland pozzolana cement with substitution of sand by fly ash and bottom ash separately in different substitution ratios (SR) were adopted for preparation of test samples. Fly ash and bottom ash with lime dust and marble dust combinations were also tested as sand free mortars. 28 days compressive strength, apparent porosity, bulk density and thermal conductivity parameters were evaluated for all such samples. By analysing the test results, it was observed that all the SR combinations satisfied the minimum masonry mortar grade MM0.7, as per IS 2250. Both the MM3 and MM5 grade mortars could be produced at 60% SR by fly ash, and corresponding reductions in thermal conductivity values were 69%, and 54% respectively, while compared with conventional mortar. Sand less mortar for both the grades resulted around 57% reductions in corresponding thermal conductivity values. Overall heat transfer co-efficient (U-value) for both side plastered and rendered brick masonry wall panel was found to be reduced by 15.58%, while comparison made between conventional mix of MM5 grade and corresponding 50% fly ash substituted mix. Thus such ash blended mortar mix appears to be advantageous in building envelop application for lowering the overall cooling/heating demand of building, besides utilizing the coal ash up to largest extent and saving natural mineral sand from depletion.

In this paper, theoretical calculations were conducted to determine the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) based on the effective medium approach using Green’s function method. The influences of microstructural features were investigated, including volume fraction, aspect ratio, and the orientation of graphene fillers. Calculated results demonstrated strong anisotropy of CTE when all graphene sheets in the composite were aligned in the in-plane direction due to the large difference between the elastic moduli of the graphene and epoxy. The in-plane CTE in the graphene/epoxy composite can be effectively reduced with small additions of graphene additive. Orientation dispersion among the graphene fillers significantly decreases the anisotropy of CTE. Accounting for the influences of all microstructural features, simulation results closely align with current experimental results. This work will provide a general guideline and a solid foundation for the optimal design and preparation of graphene/polymer composites.
