Abundant research has focused on handovers among nurses and/or doctors in hospitals; far less is known about handovers among care providers in non-clinical contexts, such as care homes for the elderly or the disabled. Focusing on handovers in a residential care home for persons with intellectual disabilities (RCHID), this study argues that handover communication in non-clinical settings is equally important. Ineffective handovers can lead to the deterioration of the residents' health conditions, chaotic situations and even injuries to both care providers and care recipients. Staff in RCHIDs rely heavily on handover communication to obtain information about the residents' needs and to offer appropriate care services. Combining discourse analysis with interactional sociolinguistics, this study analyzes written and spoken discourses involved in handover communication among care providers in a typical RCHID in Hong Kong to investigate what and how communicative functions were achieved through the participants' language use. The data were collected by convenience sampling, including handwritten notes and handover recordings of twelve sessions. Then a group interview of seven care providers was conducted to obtain supplementary data. Findings suggest that handover communication includes informational and interpersonal functions. While information delivery is the main purpose, care providers also establish relationships with one another through small talk about care home residents. The results suggest potential drawbacks of the handovers, including illegible notes, inconsistent information collection, and low interactivity. This study proposes a model that elucidates the correlation between discourse, handover communication and healthcare services, and suggests strategies to enhance such communication. Three patient education texts from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) were subjected to a Coh-Metrix analysis, then further analyzed to obtain Gist Inference Scores (GIS), a new measure of the likelihood that readers will make appropriate inferences about a text's bottom-line meaning. In the GIS formula, the Coh-Metrix psycholinguistic variables referential cohesion, deep cohesion, and latent semantic analysis (LSA) verb overlap increase GIS because cohesive texts that describe related actions are likely to induce gist representations. The Coh-Metrix variables word concreteness, imagability for content words, and hypernymy for nouns and verbs are negatively weighted because they tend to promote verbatim mental representations. NCI texts were modified for a cloze procedure with every tenth word replaced by a blank starting with the second sentence. Participants in two studies received all three cloze-modified texts. Fuzzy-Trace Theory suggests that people are more likely to comprehend high GIS texts "in their own words," and thus fill-the-blanks with multiple words that differ from those omitted by the cloze procedure expressing comparable meaning. In Study One, non-native English speakers appropriately filled blanks with different words at the same rate for all three texts of low-, medium-, and high-GIS. In Study Two, replicating previous findings, for high GIS texts, native English speakers filled blanks appropriately with words other than those removed significantly more often than for medium- or low-GIS texts. High GIS texts apparently afford readers more semantic and lexical flexibility, but non-native English speakers may be ill-equipped to capitalize on this characteristic of high GIS texts. Adolescents need access to interactive and high-quality online health information about strategies to reduce their risk for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This study aimed to evaluate the quality, readability and interactivity of webpages with adolescent-specific information on NCD risk factors. Included web pages were: (i) Australian-based; (ii) authored by government bodies or public health organizations; (iii) contained information relevant to NCD risk factors; and (iv) contained adolescent-specific information. In total, 69 web pages were included for evaluation (smoking, n = 6; nutrition, n = 22; alcohol, n = 15; physical activity n = 11; mental health, n = 6; health and obesity, n = 9). Content quality score (modified DISCERN tool) ±standard deviation ranged from fair (49.6 ± 13.6 for nutrition) to good quality (58.4 ± 11.0 for alcohol). Mean readability score (Flesch-Kincaid tool) found most webpages were difficult to read (49.6 ± 14.9, University student level). Adolescent-directed websites were written in plain English (62 ± 7.5, understood by 13-15-year-olds). Mean interactivity score indicated web pages were fairly interactive (13 ± 2.0). The study found very few webpages were written specifically for adolescents and no webpages were of excellent quality, highly interactive and written in plain English. Given the plethora of online health information from non-credible sources, we recommend public health organizations invest in co-designing excellent-quality and interactive online health information with adolescents. It is often recommended that health information should be simplified for people with low health literacy. However, little is known about whether messages adapted to low health literacy audiences are also effective for people with high health literacy, or whether simple messages are counterproductive in this group. Using a two (illustrated vs. text-only) by two (nondifficult vs. difficult text) between-subjects design, we test whether older adults with low (n = 279) versus high health literacy (n = 280) respond differently to colorectal cancer screening messages. Results showed that both health literacy groups recalled information best when the text was nondifficult. Reduced text difficulty did not lead to negative attitudes or less intention to have screening among people with high health literacy. Benefits of illustrations, in terms of improved recall and attitudes, were only found in people with low health literacy who were exposed to difficult texts. This was not found for people with high health literacy. In terms of informed decisions, nondifficult and illustrated messages resulted in the best informed decisions in the low health literacy group, whereas the high health literacy group benefited from nondifficult text in general, regardless of illustrations. Our findings imply that materials adapted to lower health literacy groups can also be used for a more general audience, as they do not deter people with high health literacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Guided largely by the Extended Parallel Process Model, the Arizona Attorney General’s Social Networking Safety Promotion and Cyberbullying Prevention presentation attempts to shape, change, and reinforce middle school students’ perceptions, attitudes, and intentions related to these important social issues. This study evaluated the short-term effects of this presentation in a field experiment using a posttest-only control-group design with random assignment to conditions. A total of 425 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at a public middle school in a large Southwestern city participated in this study. Results reveal several interesting trends across grade levels regarding cyberbullying perpetration and victimization, and concerning access to various communication technologies. The intervention had the hypothesized main effect on eight of the dependent variables under investigation. Examination of condition by grade interaction effects offered further support for an additional four hypotheses (i.e., the intervention positively affected or reversed a negative trend on four dependent variables in at least one grade). The comprehension of numerical concepts that appear in written health educational materials is an important aspect of health literacy. Health materials that include many advanced numerical concepts may place high demands on readers, especially those with low health literacy levels. The purpose of this study was to examine and document the types of numerical concepts that appear in passages selected from written diabetes educational materials that varied in their type of content. Readability of the passages was also analyzed. One hundred and fifty passages of 100 words each were selected from 50 diabetes-related educational documents, produced by major health organizations. Passages were coded for type of numerical concept, SMOG Reading Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease, and features that elaborated the numerical concepts, such as pictures or explanations. Findings indicate that passages containing general information about diabetes and its prevention contained significantly more advanced numerical concepts, the highest reading grade level, the lowest reading ease scores, and the lowest frequency of elaborative features, relative to many other types of content. The number of health literacy articles published each year in scientific journals has increased considerably in recent years. However, the content of those articles continues to focus on the same issues: developing instruments to assess health literacy skills, measuring the health literacy skills of patients, and measuring the reading level of patient education materials. We need to change the focus of health literacy research by studying which approaches to dealing with health literacy result in the best outcomes for patients—making them healthier, having fewer complications, and reducing their health care costs.
