This trial was carried out to investigate the effect of forced air warming in various body areas of women on hypothermia during cesarean delivery. The patients in the study groups (n = 76) were assigned to the full-body warming group, upper-extremity warming group, lower-extremity warming group, and control groups. The intervention groups received forced-air warming 30 min before the surgery and continued until 30 min after surgery. The incidence of hypothermia was significantly higher in the control group than in the other groups at the 60th minute of the operation (p < 0.01). The intervention and control groups showed significant differences in the frequency of shivering at the entrance to the PACU (p = 0.001). Thermal comfort scores have significant difference between the control group and all of the intervention groups (p<.001). In this study, we examined the effectiveness of Women's Postpartum Sexual Health Program (WPSHP) on Iranian women's sexual health in the postpartum period. A single-blinded randomized clinical trial was conducted in 2016 on 80 postnatal women in Iran. We used the Female Sexual Function Index, Sexual Quality of Life - Female questionnaire and Female Sexual Distress Scale. The intervention group received counseling based on WPSHP. After 28 weeks, the mean score of the Female Sexual Function Index and Female Sexual Quality of Life significantly increased in the WPSH group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001), while the mean score of the Female Sexual Distress significantly decreased in the WPSH group (p < 0.001). We concluded that Women's Postpartum Sexual Health Program could promote postnatal women's sexual function and female sexual quality of life and reduces female sexual distress in women suffering from sexual problems in the postpartum period. Gynecological examination has an very place among to maintain women's health. Negative attitudes and anxiety about gynecological examination may affect coming to the examination. In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of online training and counseling on women's attitudes and anxiety toward the gynecological examination. We randomized 100 women participating in the study into experimental and control groups. We concluded that online training and counseling had a positive effect on the attitudes of women in the experimental group toward gynecological examination. Also we determined that online training and counseling reduced women's state anxiety toward gynecological examinations. In this study, we determined that online training and counseling positively improved women's attitudes toward gynecological examination. We also found that online training and counseling reduced women's state anxiety about gynecological examinations. In the literature, most of the studies on gynecological examination have a descriptive design. This study is important since it contributes to scientific knowledge in determining the attitudes and anxiety levels of women that may affect their status of undergoing gynecological examination. In this post-hoc analysis of the AXEPT study, 855 patients were analyzed, 544 (63.6%) females. The mean (± SD) MMSE score in women vs men was 20.8 ± 2.6 vs. 21.2 ± 2.5; p = 0.0087, and women were more likely affected by psychiatric disorders (n = 76, 14.0% women vs. n = 21, 6.8% men; p = 0.0015). Men were mainly assisted by their wives (n = 207, 66.6%), women mainly by their daughters (n = 243, 44.7%) and only in a minority of cases by their husbands (n = 92, 16.9%). Women less frequently cohabited with their caregivers than men (n = 233, 43.1% vs. n = 240, 77.9%, p < 0.0001), and received less daily time of caregiving (mean (± SD): 10.0 ± 7.2 vs. 15.2 ± 8.2; p < 0.0001). No gender differences were highlighted in compliance to treatment and caregiver satisfaction, while gender differences in caregiving were found at disadvantage of women affected by more severe cognitive and psychiatric conditions. We aimed to assess the feeding pattern and influencing factors within six weeks postpartum on exclusive breastfeeding duration among Chinese mothers. This study was conducted using 2:1 matched case-control study. Cases and controls were matched for maternal age, parity and mode of birth. A total of 210 women were included. Approximately 67.9% of women stopped exclusive breastfeeding within the first six weeks postpartum. Maternal non-exclusive breastfeeding intention, lower maternal educational level, mother-infant skin to skin contact over one hour, unsatisfied breastfeeding self-evaluation and maternal unhealthy condition within the first six weeks were risk factors for ceasing exclusive breastfeeding early. A cross-sectional study was conducted to (1) examine breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates, and; (2) investigate association between food insecurity and breastfeeding status, among low-income mothers. Mothers of infants two-months or younger were recruited from a local pediatric clinic serving primarily low-income families. Upon giving consent, mothers were interviewed in-person or over the phone in either English or Spanish. Of the total 92 mothers interviewed, 90% initiated breastfeeding, but only 24% were doing exclusive breastfeeding at 2 months of infant's age. After controlling for socio-demographics, it was found that food-insecure mothers were less likely to continue with breastfeeding (β = −1.51, p =.024). Future research is warranted to understand pathways through which food insecurity affects breastfeeding and how this disparity can be prevented to ensure a safe and secure start for infants worldwide. Rapid dissemination of mobile technology provides substantial opportunity for overcoming challenges reaching rural and marginalized populations. We assessed feasibility and acceptability of longitudinal mobile data capture among women undergoing fistula surgery in Uganda (n = 60) in 2014–2015. Participants were followed for 12 months following surgery, with data captured quarterly, followed by interviews at 12 months. Participant retention was high (97%). Most respondents reported no difficulty with mobile data capture (range 93%–100%), and preferred mobile interview (88%–100%). Mobile data capture saved 1000 person-hours of transit and organizational time. Phone-based mobile data collection provided social support. This study was experimentally carried out as a methodological, randomized controlled trial for the designing of clothes for KC. Data were collected using the "Parent and Newborn Information Form", "KC Comfort Scale" and "Newborn Comfort Behavior Scale (Comfort-Neo)". The body temperature, heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiration rate parameters of the newborns were evaluated. The data were transferred to the IBM SPSS Statistics 23 program and evaluated. Our results showed that the KC Comfort Scale total score was 71.1 ± 14.8 in the control group and 84.0 ± 1.5 in the intervention group and "Newborn Comfort Behavior Scale" total scores were found to be 12.47 ± 6.90 in the control group and 8.67 ± 3.46 in the intervention group. It was determined that the KC Comfort Scale (z: −4.785 p: 0.000) in the intervention group were significantly higher compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Pain (z: −4.439 p: 0.000) and distress (z: −4.601 p: 0.000) levels of the control group were found to be significantly higher compared to the intervention group. We conducted a randomized controlled study of the effects of a hot shower on pain, anxiety, and comfort during the first stage of labor. Our sample included 104 primigravidas. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of duration of labor, yet the transition phase time of the experimental group was lower compared to the control group. Also, the pain and scores of the experimental group were significantly lower than the control group in 4, 5-7, and 8-10 cm dilatation. In addition, the total comfort score of the experimental group was higher than the control group. We determined that the application of a hot shower in the first stage of labor reduces pain and anxiety has a positive effect on birth comfort and shortens the transition phase time. We examined to compare menstruation and body mass index (BMI) in women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and to explore the effects of BMI on menstruation, facial acne, and hirsutism in women with PCOS of child-bearing age. Data from the Korea Nurses' Health Study were analyzed. The effect of BMI on irregularity of menstruation, acne, and hirsutism in the PCOS group was analyzed by logistic regression. The prevalence of PCOS was 7.1% among 11,866 participants. We found that BMI affects menstrual irregularity, facial acne, and hirsutism in PCOS women. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between postpartum depression (PPD) and women's perceived spousal support during the early postpartum period and the prevalence of PPD and affecting factors. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Perceived Spousal Support among Women in Early Postpartum Period Scale (PSSAWEPP). The study was completed with 181 women. The prevalence of PPD was found as 28.2%. A significant negative correlation was found between the total EPDS score and total PSSAWEPP score and subscale scores of emotional support, social support and physical support (p < 0.01). It was also found that as spousal support perceived by women increased, PPD risk decreased. In our study, it was observed that spousal violence (aOR = 5.69, 95% CI: 1.65-19.55) and having an unintended pregnancy (aOR = 0.24, CI: 0.11-0.54) were two factors that significantly affected PPD. We assessed the efficacy of a spiritually-integrated cognitive-behavioral educational group intervention for reducing stress, anxiety, depression, and blood pressure during pregnancy and improving delivery outcomes. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in 84 pregnant women randomly assigned to either the intervention or a control group. Demographic information was collected at baseline, along with measures of religiosity, stress, anxiety, depression, and blood pressure. Our intervention consisted of four 90-minute group sessions over 8 weeks that utilized a spiritually-integrated cognitive-behavioral approach to help participants cope with the stress of pregnancy. Stress, anxiety and depression scores in the intervention group decreased significantly by 41%, 28%, and 41%, respectively, from baseline to 3-month follow-up. There were also significant differences in systolic and diastolic blood pressure between groups at the 3-month follow-up, favoring the intervention group. Between-group differences were also significant for these outcomes. In Argentina, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is diagnosed by the Latin American Diabetes Association (ALAD) diagnostic criterion. In this work, we investigated GDM prevalence according to the ALAD and IADPSG diagnostic criteria, evaluated maternal and fetal outcomes and assessed whether fasting glycemia between 92–99 mg/dL was associated with increased risk of macrosomia and maternal obesity/overweight in an Argentine cohort of pregnant women. GDM prevalence was 9.8% with the ALAD diagnostic criterion and 25% considering the IADPSG criterion. Increased prevalence of maternal obesity/overweight was observed in patients with fasting glycemia over 99 mg/dL. A population of high metabolic risk is identified by the ALAD criterion. Health workers (HW) could be at risk of early weaning because of working conditions. Our aim was to determine factors influencing the duration of breastfeeding among Moroccan hospital workers, and to explore their breastfeeding (BF) experiences. A cross-sectional study was conducted in four hospitals in Rabat/Morocco (from November 2015 to April 2016), including each woman working in the hospital, with at least one living child and who accepted to be interviewed. Data of 203 hospital workers were analyzed. The median age was 39. The median duration of any breastfeeding was 8 months. Among different categories of HW, physicians had the lowest duration of breastfeeding. Factors significantly correlated to longer duration of breastfeeding were infant rank (p = 0.003), early initiation of breastfeeding (p < 0.001), access to milk storage generally (p = 0.04), husband's opinion on breastfeeding (p < 0.001) and category of hospital worker (p = 0.01). Three central themes emerged from the analysis of qualitative data: "Breastfeeding health worker has to assume her work duties as any other health worker", "the expression of need for support", and "the lack of knowledge on breastfeeding". In light of these results, we believe that physicians are a high-risk group of premature complete weaning; many actions should be taken for all HW to enhance their knowledge and giving them support. The researchers' aim was to assess provider gender preference among women attending the urogynecology clinic. Two hundred women with pelvic floor disorders completed a detailed questionnaire regarding possible gender preferences in choosing their urogynecologist. One-third of women preferred a female doctor while two-thirds had no preference. We found that embarrassment during the pelvic examination was the main reason for same-gender preference. This preference was significantly associated with educational level and being religious. In conclusion, although one-third of female patients prefer female urogynecologists, professional skills are considered to be more important factors when it comes to actually make a choice. Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience a high level of uncertainty and face serious difficulty in coping effectively with their conditions. We compared the rate of uncertainty and coping strategies of women patients in members and nonmembers of peer groups. Our results showed that uncertainty level for patients who are members in peer groups was less than that of the nonmember patients in peer groups. We aimed to determine any difference in the prevalence rate of depression during the three trimesters of pregnancy and its association with certain obstetric risk factors. In total, 1000 pregnant women attending primary health centers in the city of Erbil, Kurdistan, Iraq were assessed for depression using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Women in the first and second trimesters had a significantly higher probability of depression than those in the third trimester. Our aim in this comparison study was to describe the continuation of domestic violence and to assess changes in the association among family functioning, health, and social support for participants who have or have not experienced violence for the years 2012 and 2015. We collected the data using a family functioning, health, and social support (FAFHES) questionnaire. We collected the baseline questionnaires (N = 188) from patients who visited a Finnish central hospital and mailed the follow-up survey (N = 71). The prevalence of violence remained constant. We aimed to compare the performance of seven risk screening tools for detecting elderly Egyptian women with osteoporosis and to modify the tool with the best performance to increase the efficiency of referral for bone mineral density (BMD) testing. There are few studies about the epidemiology of osteoporosis in Egypt, in addition, there was no study done before to evaluate the performance of these seven screening tools in a large sample size. This aims to help clinicians restrict the use of DXA scan for those patients defined as "high risk" for osteoporosis which can substantially reduce the cost for the community and the patients, especially in developing countries. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 681 elderly women for measurement of BMD using DXA scans. The performance of the Simple Calculated Osteoporosis Risk Estimation (SCORE) was superior to other indices with the highest sensitivity and specificity. The newly modified SCORE tool at cutoff point ≥1 is a simple easy tool and shows good sensitivity (up to 94%) and acceptable specificity (up to 46.7%) in detecting osteoporosis in elderly women with fewer items and easier calculation. We assessed medical students' opinion of affirmative action programs (AAPs), perception of gender equality and discrimination. 276 medical students (56.2% female) participated. Women considered AAPs to be more important than did men. Most women (62.6%) and men (71.9%) received equal treatment, but significantly more women (22.6%) than men (11.6%) experienced discrimination. It is necessary to convey the importance of gender equality and equal treatment, including discrimination and mistreatment. Breast arterial calcifications (BACs) are common findings on mammography which are associated with an increased risk of the coronary artery disease (CAD). Our aim in the current study was to design measurement instruments of CAD prediction, with or without BACs, and its discriminatory validity in the diagnosis of CAD (expressed by Syntax score) in women. This was observational, prospective study in the women cohort which underwent mammography and angiography. Early linkage to HIV care is associated significantly with improved patient outcomes and reduced the risk of HIV transmission. However, delays between HIV diagnosis and registering for care have prevailed in Vietnam. The aim of researchers in this study is to examine linkages to care for individuals newly diagnosed with HIV in 2014, especially to highlight the impact of gender upon these linkages in a Northern Province of Ninh Binh. We collected secondary data of all 125 eligible HIV positive people diagnosed in 2014 and conducted a gender-based descriptive analysis of their registration to care within 6 months. Nineteen in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions were completed. We found that women accounted for one-third of newly diagnosed cases (42/125), but initiated HIV treatment at an earlier stage of HIV disease than men (65% women at stage 1, 2 versus 31% in men). Stigma and discrimination was greater among women while inadequate awareness of treatment was greater for men. Dissatisfaction with HIV testing and counseling and no or passive referral to treatment were other barriers for both the genders for enrolling in care services after diagnosis. Female crack users who sought treatment are a hard to find part of the population. We studied sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics of crack users undergoing treatment in psychosocial care centers for alcohol and other drugs in six Brazilian cities. We carried out a cross-sectional study of 816 crack users and collected data with the Addiction Severity Index. Women were more likely to be in vulnerable situations: had worst levels of education, were not receiving money enough to their basic needs; more likely to be HIV positive (10.1%), to report sexual abuse (34%), and to be separated from their children (20%). Despite universal health care in Canada, sex workers (SWs) and im/migrants experience suboptimal health care access. In this analysis, we examined the correlates of unmet health needs among SWs in Metro Vancouver over time. Data from a longitudinal cohort of women SWs (An Evaluation of Sex Workers Health Access [AESHA]) were used. Of 742 SWs, 25.5% reported unmet health needs at least once over the 4-year study period. In multivariable logistic regression using generalized estimating equations, recent im/migration had the strongest impact on unmet health needs; long-term im/migration, policing, and trauma were also important determinants. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a significant cause of mortality in women. Risk factors for CAD may vary in different populations. We assessed the risk factors for angiographically proven CAD in women in India in this case-control study. Women with normal coronary arteries served as controls. High prevalence of conventional CAD risk factors was seen in women with CAD, but significant association with CAD was not present for all risk factors. Oral contraceptive pill use and family history of CAD were important risk factors for CAD in premenopausal women, while reproductive span was an additional factor influencing premature CAD. Our objective for this study was to examine symptom severity among women suffering from premenstrual syndrome as well as associations between symptom severity and impairment. In a one-cycle prospective study, various premenstrual symptoms of 91 women were assessed. Tension and irritability were the most severe symptoms. Headache, irritability, self-deprecating thoughts, and depressed mood were the symptoms that were subjectively rated as the most burdensome. Significant correlations were found between the mean premenstrual severity and functional impairment. The severity of premenstrual affective symptoms was related to social impairment. The severity of psychological symptoms was correlated with occupational impairment. This descriptive longitudinal cohort study investigated the prevalence and psychological risk factors for depression in new mothers living in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan. Expectant mothers (n = 236) were recruited through antenatal clinics, and 162 participants were followed up at 6 weeks postpartum. The estimated prevalence of probable depression (at a cut-off score ≧ 13 on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) was 17.3% before birth and 24.1% after birth. Several risk factors for postnatal depression were identified, including maternal self-esteem, antenatal depression, and psychiatric morbidity. The regression of intention on predictive variables yielded an adjusted R2 of.70. We explored behavioral factors that contributed to late presentation of breast cancer. A cross-sectional survey of 120 women of child-bearing age was employed, and data were collected using interviewer-administered questionnaires addressing predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors associated with breast cancer screening. A total of 53.5% knew what breast cancer screening was; breast self-exam was the most commonly known form of screening, although only 7.5% practiced it. Lack of awareness (p=.004) and the knowledge of someone who previously had breast cancer (p =.0004) were prominent predictors for breast cancer screening, leading to either delay in or early presentation of the condition, respectively. In this study, we aimed to determine commonalities and differences in physical conditions and depressive symptoms of Chinese postpartum mothers in the United States and Taiwan, and whether their relationship differs by country. Data from 151 Chinese mothers in the United States and 238 Taiwanese mothers were analyzed. A physical health condition checklist and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CESD) scale were used. More Taiwanese mothers experienced depression. Depression scores were correlated with physical conditions. Over 50% of mothers with depression experienced physical exhaustion, sleep disturbances, interrupted sleep, and decreases in memory. To compare the self-assessed health status (SAHS) of female caregivers of older adults across the United States (N = 1,496), China (N = 485), and the United Kingdom (N = 252), data from three data sets were analyzed to isolate significant predictors of SAHS using an adapted meta-analytic technique. Higher income and full-time employment were predictors of higher SAHS; chronic health condition and emotional strain predicted lower SAHS. Female gender was a predictor of lower SAHS. The health status of women was negatively impacted by the caregiving experience. National policies, such as those in the United Kingdom, may result in higher SAHS for women caregivers. We examined and contrasted 129 Canadian-born and immigrant women's experiences of violence and associated structural and interpersonal factors within indoor commercial sex venues. The majority experienced at least one form of structural, interpersonal, or both types of violence, with the attempted removal of a condom during sexual services being cited most frequently. Canadian-born women reported more frequent violent assaults in the survey data. The women's qualitative narratives illustrated that perceptions of violence differed significantly among Canadian versus non-Canadian born women. In this exploratory study I investigated the participation status in breast and cervical cancer screening of a group of American immigrant Arab Muslim women (AMW). Perceived knowledge of and barriers to screening participation, relationships among demographic variables, health practice and beliefs, and self-reports of traditionalism and acculturation also are studied. Factors including religious and cultural beliefs, economic concerns, and modesty and embarrassment were considered. To reach the goals of Healthy People 2010 (HP 2010), an effective and meaningful educational initiative to raise awareness about breast and cervical cancer of AMW will require specific interventions consistent with their cultural and religious traditions. Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) and breast cancer (BrCa) are prevalent in Armenia. We investigated DM2, reproductive factors, and BrCa in a case control study of 302 women. Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed DM2 increased adjusted odds of BrCa by 5.53 (95% CI 1.34–22.81). Any birth was protective (adjusted OR = 0.36, 95% CI 0.20–0.66). Each year delay in first pregnancy increased risk (adjusted OR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.01–1.27) as did induced abortions (adjusted OR = 2.86, 95% CI 1.02–8.04). Odds ratios were adjusted for age and body mass index (BMI), which confounded associations between DM2 and BrCa. We suggest our findings imply the need for further investigation in Armenian and in other populations with similar characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
