Search

A pervasive barrier to preventing, reducing, and ending homelessness is the stigmatization of and discrimination towards persons experiencing homelessness (PEH), termed "homeism." To date, there has been no systematic review of the experiences and outcomes of stigmatization and discrimination among PEH or interventions to reduce this discrimination. To fill this gap in the literature, we conducted a scoping review to identify the ways in which PEH have been stigmatized and discriminated against, the results of these experiences, and interventions that have been used to reduce stigma and discrimination. We reviewed results from 12 databases with no date restrictions; 205 studies met our inclusion criteria. Thematic data analyses resulted in the identification of 12 categories. Using community consultation, the scoping review themes were reviewed and validated with 25 PEH or service providers in the homelessness sector and their feedback integrated into our results. Thematic categories included discrimination and stigmatization in healthcare, social services, workplaces and employment, and public spaces by the general public; discrimination and stigmatization from landlords, police and security guards, informal social networks, and by PEH toward PEH; discrimination and stigmatization linked to intersectional domains; PEH feelings about discrimination and stigmatization; outcomes of discrimination and stigmatization for PEH; and interventions to reduce stigma, discrimination, and prejudice towards PEH. Based on findings from this review, we argue that homeism serves as a social determinant of health as PEH confront multiple barriers to housing, income security, and healthcare due to interpersonal, institutional, structural, and intrapersonal stigmatization and discrimination. Health and social needs exist along a dynamic continuum. Recognising that health status is inextricably impacted by social determinants of health, community paramedicine has opportunities and a responsibility to reduce inequities. The objective of this scoping review was to investigate the peer‐reviewed and grey literature to explore how community paramedicine supports community needs along a health and social continuum. We conducted a scoping review of the English language literature using the JBI Scoping Review methodology. We searched CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and organisational websites. 30 peer‐reviewed and 13 grey literature articles met the inclusion criteria. The findings describe the ways community paramedicine models evolved from minimising system pressures on emergency health services to addressing health and social needs. A key recommendation across the literature was the need to meaningfully engage communities early in the program development to understand how best to implement and codesign integrated service models addressing specific community needs although there was a lack of evidence to guide this approach. There is a notable lack of evidence pertaining to optimising technologies in the program design and implementation. The results highlight opportunities to determine the best practices for conducting holistic community needs assessments that include equitable stakeholder engagement and enhancing education to prepare paramedics for expanded roles. Community paramedicine provides opportunities to better meet the needs of structurally marginalised communities. There is a social responsibility and opportunity to engage communities to codesign service delivery, advance paramedic education, and enhance interprofessional collaboration to better support community needs and generate upstream solutions for individuals and communities. Welfare technologies are becoming a necessity for health and long‐term care, but little is known about their acceptance by nurses working with older adults in institutional, home, or community setting. The aim of this five‐stage scoping review was to address this knowledge gap by identifying factors influencing nurses' acceptance of welfare technologies, both before and after using them. A search of seven bibliographic databases and grey literature was conducted in December 2022, and based on defined selection criteria, 27 sources published between 2007 and 2022 were then considered. The data were examined with ATLAS.ti 9 using content‐based analysis, and five groups of acceptance factors were identified: individual, organisational, patient, technological, and social influence. Post‐use acceptance factors were found to be more nuanced than pre‐use factors. While the pre‐use factors included mainly attitudes, needs, outcome expectations, and ethical concerns, the post‐use factors more prominently featured experience, usefulness, technical issues, device characteristics, effort expectancy, and organisational factors. Nevertheless, patient‐centeredness was reflected in both. This study contributes to a better understanding of the factors affecting nurses' acceptance of welfare technologies in the care of older adults in non‐clinical settings, and it underscores the patient's pivotal role in all aspects of nursing practice. By offering insights into both pre‐use and post‐use factors, this study gives an enriched perspective on the acceptance of welfare technologies in nursing care and provides guidance for future research and practice. Background. Paediatric patients in Australia experience lengthy wait times for Primary and Allied Healthcare Service (PAHCS) appointments. This results in a lack of satisfaction and adverse health outcomes. However, very few studies have explored wait times for appointments with PAHCSs in Australia. This study explored the length of wait time and associated barriers to timely access to paediatric PAHCSs in Australia. Methods. The scoping review followed PRISMA‐ScR guidelines for Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses. We comprehensively searched for relevant studies from five databases, including Scopus, Emcare, Medline (via Ovid), CINAHL, and Google Scholar in August 2023 without any time limitations. Studies that reported qualitative findings on the wait times and associated barriers to timely accessing to PAHCSs were selected in this scoping review. We performed a reflexive thematic analysis using NVivo software in this review. Results. A total of seven studies out of ninety‐one retrieved records were eligible to be included in this review. Studies show that Australian children, in general, had to wait more than one year for health assessments and interventions in PAHCSs. The long waiting times were perceived as frustrating and worrying by caregivers of children. Several overarching themes related to the barriers of timely accessing to paediatric PAHCSs in Australia were identified, such as strict appointment criteria for children, disparity between demand and provision, parental unawareness, and inadequate public funding in rural PAHCSs. Conclusion. Australian paediatric patients are severely burdened with long wait times for appointments with PAHCSs, primarily, due to the poor government initiatives in rural PAHCSs. This study suggested that the criteria for booking an appointment in PAHCSs need to be simplified. Besides, adequate public health funding and the provision of resources are required in rural PAHCSs. Background. Despite existing evidence on the efficacy of cardiac rehabilitation (CR), programs are underutilized. Factors affecting referral and enrolment in hospital‐based CR were identified; however, research into factors affecting referral and enrolment in community‐based CR is lacking. Aim. The purpose of this scoping review is to identify and synthesize facilitators and challenges in the transition of patient care from hospital to community healthcare services and how they influence CR referral and enrolment. Method. PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, ProQuest, and Web of Science databases were searched for relevant publications. The data were analysed using thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke. The study followed the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews and the Joanna Briggs Institute's model. Result. In total, 36 studies were included in this analysis. The results show that facilitators and challenges for referral and enrolment in CR form a complex interaction. Factors influencing referral and enrolment may be setting‐dependent or ‐independent. However, each setting may influence the entire transition. Conclusion. The patient decision‐making process regarding CR may begin in the hospital, indicating that this period is the right time to encourage CR enrolment. To support patient transition, healthcare professionals at hospitals require knowledge of CR and the ability to prioritize patient support. Many people with intellectual disability live with swallowing, eating, and drinking difficulties (dysphagia). People living with both intellectual disability and dysphagia may require a range of supports in order to have the opportunity to participate in different eating and drinking environments of their choice. Understanding the nature of those supports is important to ensure that people with intellectual disability living with dysphagia can continue to create a good life for themselves at home and in their community. This study aimed to identify the nature of supports provided to people with intellectual disability and dysphagia when eating and drinking in different environments, as described in the published literature. A scoping review, underpinned by an a priori protocol, was conducted by a team of four reviewers. Four databases were searched. Sixteen papers were included for full‐text review. The review identified that studies most frequently reported support in the form of safety strategies to prevent the ill‐health consequences of dysphagia and training carers in those safety strategies by speech‐language pathologists. To a much lesser extent, studies identified the psychosocial needs of people with intellectual disability and dysphagia and how these were being considered in the design of training support. Overall, this review identified a significant need for future research into supports for eating outside the home and collaboration with people with intellectual disability and dysphagia about dysphagia training content which reflects the experience of living with dysphagia in social community environments. Background. Changing demographics has led to healthcare systems reorientating healthcare delivery towards the community setting and implementing integrated models of care worldwide. This systematic review examines the effectiveness of community‐based multidisciplinary integrated care strategies with general practitioner (GP) participation for community‐dwelling older adults and describes the level of care integration in each study. Methods. PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Central Register of Controlled Trials in the Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE were systematically searched in February 2024. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) or cluster RCTs that focused on interventions for community‐dwelling older adults delivered by health and social care professionals with GPs were included. Two reviewers independently conducted the risk of bias assessment, applied the GRADE tool to quantify the certainty of evidence, and used the rainbow model of integrated care taxonomy to describe the elements of integrated care. Outcomes included functional status, healthcare utilisation, participant satisfaction with care, health‐related quality of life, mortality, nursing home admission, and adverse outcomes. Meta‐analyses were performed using Review Manager 5.4. Results. Twelve trials recruiting 8069 participants across 8 countries were included. Community‐based multidisciplinary team (MDT) integrated care demonstrated significant improvements in functional status (standardised mean difference (SMD): 0.21; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.05–0.37; low certainty evidence), hospitalisation (risk ratio (RR): 0.77; 95% CI: 0.63–0.95; very low certainty evidence), and participant satisfaction with care (SMD: 0.46; 95% CI: 0.15–0.76; low certainty evidence) from 12 to 36 months. No statistically significant effects favouring community‐based MDT interventions for functional status at 6‐month follow‐up, emergency department presentation, mortality, health‐related quality of life, or nursing home admission were established. Conclusion. Community‐based MDT integrated care with GP participation improves functional status, reduces hospitalisations, and increases patient satisfaction among community‐dwelling older adults in the long term. Providing formal care and support in the home has many benefits. Applying a human rights-based approach places the person and their human rights at the centre of all that a health and social care service does. There is a paucity of evidence on how to apply a human rights-based approach in practice when providing homecare. Increasing knowledge and understanding of human rights will empower health and social care practitioners to protect and promote human rights in formal homecare. The aim of this narrative review was to identify and describe human rights-based approaches in homecare, in order to promote awareness and understanding of a human rights-based approach. Five bibliographic databases were searched. Primary research studies pertaining to the delivery of formal homecare that included a human rights-based approach were eligible for inclusion. Sixteen articles were identified for inclusion. Quality appraisal and data extraction were conducted on included studies. A deductive framework analysis was used and concepts of a human rights-based approach that emerged from the literature as relevant to homecare were as follows: dignity and respect, autonomy, equality, participation, and communication. We found that homecare planning and delivery requires the integration of human rights, using approaches, such as person-centred care, partnerships in decision-making, supporting independence, and acknowledging a person's beliefs and cultures, in everyday practice. Contemporary healthcare for those experiencing mental illness requires healthcare practitioners (HCPs) to effectively incorporate the prescription of exercise in their treatment, in accordance with clinical guidelines. However, there has been a lack of effective implementation of such recommendations. The purpose of this review was to identify barriers to exercise prescription in the treatment of people diagnosed with mental illness as perceived by HCPs. APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and PubMed electronic databases were searched for relevant articles published in the period from January 2005 to September 2023. A total of 18 papers were included for thematic synthesis. Four key themes were identified across the qualitative (8), quantitative (6), and mixed method (4) papers, including a lack of knowledge and confidence of HCPs in prescribing exercise; role and responsibility; HCPs' misconceptions of client barriers; and systemic issues impacting exercise prescription practices. A lack of knowledge or confidence was the most common barrier. Some HCPs indicated a desire to develop their skills in exercise prescription, while others indicated a preference for an exercise professional to take responsibility for this aspect of treatment. Systemic barriers were spread across a range of issues, with lack of time, excessive workload, and difficulties accessing qualified staff most commonly cited. This review provides further insight into the barriers to exercise prescription faced by HCPs and makes recommendations regarding how to address these barriers in order to better implement clinical guidelines and thus improve the quality of treatment provided to people diagnosed with a mental illness. Objectives. Sexuality in residential aged care is a complex and often overlooked aspect of aged care. The attitudes of both staff and residents significantly influence how sexuality is perceived and addressed in these settings. This scoping review aims to compile, analyse, and identify gaps in the existing research concerning the attitudes of residents and staff towards sexuality within the context of residential aged care. Methods. The scoping review involved a systematic search across eight databases, yielding 469 unique articles, with 29 included studies. Results. Thematic synthesis within the selected studies disclosed three themes: hollow attitudes, postsexual residents, and organizational setbacks. Discussion. The results emphasize the significance of treating sexuality as a fundamental right, emphasizing that it should be not only acknowledged in theory but also implemented in practice. Health services research is important in improving health systems' and providers' efficiency and effectiveness. This may require health services to intervene at an individual and community level to address people's complex social issues. An important issue is social connections, which have been identified as a social determinant of health and can help buffer stressful life events. Social support networks can be visualized using eco-maps, a tool that originated in child welfare practices and has been adopted widely by clinicians and researchers. This paper aims to understand where and how eco-maps have been used in health services research. To answer the research questions, this scoping review used the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for scoping reviews. In total, 70 studies were included in the scoping review. The authors found that social support denoted in an eco-map does not guarantee the provision of support; however, the dialogue needed to create an eco-map could facilitate conversations about care expectations, identification of vulnerable points or risk factors, and actions to improve family and individual functioning. A significant gap remains in the knowledge and use of eco-maps in identifying population service and resource gaps and how to bridge the knowledge-to-action chasm better. Further exploration is needed to examine how to optimize the application of eco-mapping in the health services context, including generating guidelines, templates, or instructions for implementation. Polypharmacy is common in older people who often live with disability and dependency. The number of older people living with unmet needs for social care is also believed to be rising. Polypharmacy is simple to operationalise, whilst unmet needs are not routinely identified but are known to adversely affect health and well-being. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to investigate whether polypharmacy is a marker of unmet needs for social care in older people. Sixteen databases were searched from inception to January 2021. Studies were included if they reported quantitative data for polypharmacy ("multiple medicines") in relation to unmet needs for social care ("relative or absolute") in older people ("study criteria aged ≥55 years or mean age ≥55 in the sample as a whole or stratified data for the ≥55-year age group") and were from a high-income country (defined by the World Bank). Quality was assessed using the National Institute for Health tool for observational studies. Four studies were identified from 2,549 citations, and overall, the quality of evidence was low. Some older people using multiple medications had their social care needs met, whilst others did not. However, there is a clear rationale as to why polypharmacy may be linked to unmet social care needs. Given the limited studies identified in this review, future research should explore this further. Social participation is positively associated with older adults' health. Health-care services, therefore, need to empower older adults to adapt to the social changes that accompany aging. This systematic review, with a metasynthesis of qualitative studies, aimed to describe and develop an understanding of home-dwelling older adults' (65 yrs+) experiences of using strategies to maintain and foster their social participation. The main search was performed in March 2022 using the PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and AMED databases and included peer-reviewed articles published between 2012 and 2022. A total of 35 full-text articles from 15 different countries were included and assessed for quality by the assessment tool for qualitative studies provided by the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). The metasynthesis resulted in the main theme: strategically creating routines that foster social participation and two main categories: inward-looking strategies for social participation and outward-looking strategies for social participation. Each main category contained three subcategories. The findings suggest that for perceiving social participation, it is important for older adults to create routines with patterns of activities and to be able to engage in these activities. The findings further reflect that older adults use earlier experiences of social participation to facilitate the making of routines. This indicates that health-care interventions supporting older adults' social participation must be applied early and with a health-promotive focus. Conclusively, researchers need to develop interventions that support older adults in healthy activity patterns by raising awareness of how to use inward-looking and outward-looking strategies to create routines for social participation. The findings further suggest that older adults' possibilities for social participation could be supported by designing accessible venues that facilitate spontaneous meetings and encourage older adults' own choices and initiatives for social participation. Responsibility for health and care services for people with dementia is often divided between various professionals, agencies, and authorities, causing a fragmentation of care and an unclear division of responsibility between different stakeholders. In relation to this, collaboration and coordination of health and care services are often described as vital for catering to diverse needs and to provide adequate support. The aim of this scoping review was to map how different health and care agencies collaborate and coordinate services for older people with dementia. Joanna Briggs Institute's proposed methodology for scoping reviews was used, and systematic searches were carried out in six databases. A total of 59 articles published within the last 10 years were included based on certain eligibility criteria. The Research Pyramid was used to critically appraise these articles, suggesting that available research is of moderate quality. The descriptive content analysis of the articles revealed eight categories describing the characteristics of collaboration and coordination for people with dementia, as presented in previous articles. These characteristics are described in terms of different barriers, the function of the care coordinator, assessment and planning to provide services, interprofessional collaboration, information sharing, knowledge needed to navigate a complex health and care system and understanding of dementia, and personalisation of care. Engaging care coordinators with diverse competencies to address both medical and social care needs is essential, especially since people with dementia experience multiple and complex needs. It is also important to explain and visualise available services and when these services are suitable for implementation. More tasks and responsibilities have been transferred to the caregivers of a seriously ill person living at home. The caregivers risk getting overburdened and sick themselves and therefore cannot help with sufficient support. Limited knowledge exists about what applies in a private home, and there is a general lack of knowledge about how healthcare professionals can support the caregivers. In this review, we investigated how nurses can support caregivers where a seriously ill person is living at home. The design was a scoping review. Literature published from 2007 to 2022 was searched in four databases: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and PsycINFO. Quality assessment was made by Hawkers model, and n = 18 studies from Northern Europe, the USA, and Canada were included. The methods used were 11 qualitative, 5 quantitative, and 2 mixed-method studies, including 971 caregivers, 217 patients, and 10 healthcare professionals. Multidisease, cancer, apoplexy, and recipients of palliative care were the main focus, but other diseases were also represented. The nurse's task is to ensure the presence of a number of prerequisites for the care process to be successful and to be aware that caregivers may find themselves in a number of dilemmas and to try to remedy these dilemmas. If possible, the nurse should facilitate that the care burden is shared between several members of the family. Care must be performed according to the principles of family nursing, meaning that all relevant members of the family, appointed by the patient, are included, and collaboration is established. Future research and practice should focus on the nurses, the framework home care nurses work under, and how they can practice family nursing, so that family nursing becomes a natural part of primary care. Safeguarding for healthcare involves working together to protect adults, children, and young people at risk of harm. Despite global research and national guidance outlining health professionals' roles in this regard, there is limited knowledge about the type of strategies used to mobilise safeguarding research to practitioners in England. Our critical interpretive synthesis (CIS) sought to explore how safeguarding knowledge is mobilised to enable practitioners to use research effectively. This synthesis aimed to bridge the theory-practice gap in mobilising safeguarding knowledge to practitioners. Knowledge mobilisation (KMb) is an emerging discipline concerned with moving knowledge across communities to catalyse change. This review aimed to build understanding about how safeguarding knowledge is mobilised for healthcare in England and to synthesise the type of approaches undertaken to protect adults and children from harms, including abuse. A critical interpretive synthesis was undertaken using KMb theory and computer-assisted modelling technologies for secondary thematic analysis of complex literature of relevance, including qualitative research, reviews, and reports. Few papers informed how safeguarding knowledge is mobilised for healthcare in England. Learning from experience dominated the literature in three ways: (i) crisis response, (ii) practice engagement, and (iii) influencing actions (for "best" practice). Embedding safeguarding knowledge and skills in healthcare settings usually followed a crisis response. Learning from experience showed movement between practice engagement and influencing actions for adult and/or child protection. KMb might be useful in supporting the implementation of evidence-based safeguarding for practice. CIS identified a gap in how safeguarding research is mobilised to practitioners for healthcare. KMb theory provided an analytical bridge to computer-assisted modelling of factors associated with moving learning from experience to learning in practice. Future research could build on hybrid synthesising of safeguarding functions and impacts for healthcare, to enable practitioners to protect adults and children from multiple harms, including violence and abuse. Vulnerable communities (including people from refugee, Indigenous, culturally and linguistically diverse, and low socioeconomic backgrounds) represent the most at-risk populations facing inequities and negative health, economic, and social outcomes. The recent COVID-19 pandemic both highlighted and fuelled these disparities. Community gardening has emerged as a community-based solution to address these inequities, yet the research literature has largely considered outcomes for the general population rather than those with the most need. This paper represents the first systematic review to summarise the evidence on the broad impact of community gardening on outcomes for vulnerable populations. A systematic search of 13 databases (PubMed, Medline, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Academic Search Complete, Education Source, Education Resources Information Center, Psychology and Behavioral Science Collection, SocINDEX, and Allied Health and Complementary Medicine Database) for English language articles from 1985 to 2022 was conducted. There were 33 studies identified where females were substantially overrepresented in the studies compared to males, and the main criteria for vulnerability included low socioeconomic-status and culturally diverse populations. Findings revealed that community gardening provides a wide range of benefits for vulnerable populations, with social connection, health, education, and nutrition being the more commonly cited. A relative emphasis on benefits of social connections, education, and nutrition is apparent for vulnerable populations in comparison to reviews considering the general population. The quality of studies was evaluated as moderate with little information provided about program characteristics. These shortcomings reduce the understanding of what characteristics are most likely to result in improvements and limit the capacity of practitioners to translate research into policy and practice for vulnerable communities. A range of professionals and services are often involved in supporting parents with mental health needs where there are child protection concerns. However, they do not always meet the needs of this population who tend to experience inadequate support and mistrust of services. This review aimed to synthesize parent and practitioner experiences of support for parents with both mental health needs and children's social services involvement. We performed electronic searches of the following databases: PsycINFO, CINAHL, HMIC, MEDLINE, Embase, Social Policy and Practice, Social Services Abstracts, Social Science Citation Index, OpenGrey, Social Care Online, and ProQuest. Following searching and screening, 41 studies were identified including 359 parents and 1370 practitioners. We worked with a Lived Experience Advisory Group to develop the following themes: (1) a downward spiral of service intervention; (2) working with parents, not against them; (3) support wanted versus support provided; and (4) constrained by service rigidity. We found that families were often parenting amidst trauma and adversity. However, service involvement could trigger a "downward spiral" of stressful processes over which parents felt they lacked control. Instead of improving their situations, support sometimes added to families' difficulties, worsening parents' mental health and making them feel marginalised, criticised, and retraumatised. There were, however, also examples of positive practice, where practitioners and parents developed trusting, open, and mutually respectful relationships. Practitioners often felt that they were limited in their ability to offer collaborative, holistic care because services were fragmented, underfunded, crisis driven, and inflexible. Difficulties mentioned most often by parents, such as financial issues, tended not to be a focus of available interventions. The objective of this rapid scoping review is to provide an overview of studies from northwest Europe that describe and evaluate community care delivered by a nurse practitioner (NP) in a team of healthcare professionals. In particular, we explore the roles of NPs within community care, the perceived impact at the patient and informal caregivers levels, and influencing factors (facilitating and impeding). This rapid scoping review was performed in accordance with Prisma RR guidelines. Data were collected from online databases between October and December 2020 and an update in March 2023. Medline was used for the search string, and the following databases were searched: Cinahl, Cochrane, Embase, Medline, and Web of Science (WoS). All studies described the roles of NPs, including their tasks and responsibilities in community care. The main findings about the roles were that NPs in community care diagnose, treat patients, and support and advise informal caregivers. They refer and perform case management for (frail) older people. They train DNs and take on project and strategic management roles. The results showed that the NP meets the increasing and complex care demands in patients' homes. The main findings about the perceived impacts were that patients and informal caregivers were generally satisfied with the deployment of the NP. Healthcare professionals experienced the benefits of NPs working in community care. Some healthcare professionals were sceptical when the role was first introduced, but attitudes improved after they worked alongside NPs. Other influencing factors were the competences of the NP, i.e., have a pioneering mentality, a clear vision, and a job profile from community care organisations, and having to collaborate with allied healthcare professionals. However, implementation of the NP in community care is still in its infancy in northwest Europe. The health and well-being benefits of outdoor nature-based activity are increasingly recognised, but older people with cognitive impairment face significant barriers to access. The ENLIVEN project aims to promote access by gathering evidence and coproducing guidance for activity providers. As part of this project, we conducted a scoping review to characterise the types of outdoor nature-based activity for older people with dementia and other forms of cognitive impairment for which research evidence is available and the range of outcomes is examined. The protocol is available online. We systematically searched relevant databases from 1st January, 2009, to 20th October, 2022, and screened articles against the following criteria: participants were older people aged 65 and above with cognitive impairment arising from dementia or another health condition. The study described the formal provision of outdoor nature-based activity away from the person's usual place of residence, and at least one outcome of participation in the activity was evaluated. Twenty-eight articles met inclusion criteria, all focused on people with dementia. In most cases, participants were attending day care or living in residential care, and sample sizes ranged from 4 to 136. Activities fell into three groups: green day care (fifteen articles), equine-assisted interventions (seven articles), and community nature-based activities (six articles). Outcome domains explored were connection with nature, activity engagement, impacts on clinical symptoms, functional ability, physical, psychological and social health,, and quality of life. Outdoor nature-based activity can be offered as an opportunity for meaningful occupation to enrich daily life, as a framework for day care provision, or as an intervention to address clinical needs. The evidence base for green day care is relatively established, but the potential for addressing specific clinical needs remains to be explored. The paucity of evidence regarding community provision, especially for those not attending formal care settings, suggests the need for effective knowledge exchange to stimulate initiatives in this area. Objective. Mental ill-health is a common occurrence globally and represents a significant burden of disease. In Australia, the development and improvement of programs that connect individuals earlier in their mental ill-health journey is a national health priority. However, there are current informational gaps on community-based initiatives and their associated mental health outcomes. This review aimed to systematically identify, assess, and analyse studies reporting on community-based outreach interventions for individuals experiencing mental ill-health. Method. A systematic review of the literature was conducted across 6 electronic databases and Google Scholar on 01 November 2021 and 12 June 2022. The National Health and Medical Research Council Evidence Hierarchy was used to assess study quality, and the PAGER framework was used to synthesise and analyse the results of included studies. Results. Eighty-three studies met the inclusion criteria; 51% (n = 42 studies) incorporated digital technology, and 49% (n = 41 studies) involved nonclinical light-touch interventions. Individuals with severe mental ill-health were likely to benefit from targeted interventions, and individuals with mild to moderate symptoms of mental ill-health were likely to benefit from interventions involving high levels of engagement from participants. Conclusion. Results from this review provide an understanding of patterns related to the effectiveness of community-based outreach interventions. Knowledge from this review will inform the implementation of targeted strategies to enhance the proactive provision of mental health services in the community. Standardised outcome measures are needed to strengthen the evidence base for community-based outreach interventions, by enabling researchers and service providers to explore which type of intervention and with what intensity is best suited for participants with varying levels of mental ill-health. The home environment is increasingly emphasized as a key factor in home falls among frail older people. In this study, we aimed at exploring and synthesizing empirical studies that considered the environmental factors of home falls among frail older people. We performed a systematic review to draw comprehensive conclusions regarding these environmental factors by searching MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane Library, as well as gray literature databases. Intervention and nonintervention studies that specifically reported home environmental factors related to falls in community-dwelling frail older people aged 65 years and over were selected. Of the 8374 studies initially retrieved, seven intervention and seven nonintervention studies were included in the analysis. In seven of the 14 studies, environmental hazards were evaluated using relevant assessment tools. Interventions were provided for the bathroom/toilet, bedroom, living room, and for slipping and tripping, identified as frequent fall locations and situations, respectively, through nonintervention studies. The most common intervention was to provide advice/counseling and disseminate information to enhance knowledge after visiting the home and evaluating the home environmental factors that could affect falls. In the majority of the studies, the intervention was of a multicomponent nature, and in only two intervention studies was there practical modification of the home environment to lower the fall risk. In all the four studies with statistically significant results, the intervention was provided by a multidisciplinary team. Through this review, we identified environmental factors for home falls, helping clinicians and health professionals gain a better understanding of the situation to prevent recurrence in frail older people who have experienced falls. The findings indicate that comprehensive standardized environmental evaluations should be conducted considering older people's functional characteristics and needs and that the intervention process requires the participation of older people with a multidisciplinary team. Health systems are poorly equipped to respond to complex health and social needs, which span sectors and diagnoses. This study puts forward a framework for complex care policy. The framework was developed using critical interpretive synthesis, a method for developing theory on the basis of a transparent search and critical analysis of a heterogenous body of the literature. Seventy-three results were included from a systematic search. We suggested that complex needs can be understood as a pattern of unmet needs occurring at the intersection of fragmented health systems and services, multimorbidity, and social marginalization. We proposed a multilevel framework to inform complex care policy design that accounts for each of these issues and their intersections at the individual, service, and system level. We further identified five principles that have relevance at all levels of complex care. Our framework centres clients and their relationships with providers and suggests how services and systems can support client-level interactions. Conceptualizing complex care policy as a multilevel intervention offers a tool for understanding unexpected effects. Consumer-directed care (CDC) is a policy solution for quality deficiencies in aged care where seniors accessing care services are empowered with full choice and flexibility over their service packages. Various programs have been developed using this policy approach around the world, and implementation has invoked a mixture of responses. While consumer organisations welcome a policy direction providing additional choice, there is a concern that this policy complicates the decision-making process, leading people to rely on "rules of thumb" (heuristics) that may not reflect their best interests. Behavioural science provides a lens for looking at heuristics and biases that may occur during complex decision making, particularly as people age. Objective. To explore the presence and influence of heuristics and biases on the decision-making processes of older people receiving home care services under a CDC model. Method. Qualitative systematic review involving systematic searching of PubMed, MEDLINE via Ovid, Embase via Elsevier, CINAHL via Ebsco, PsycINFO via Ovid, Web of Science, Scopus, and EconLit, from inception until 14th April 2022 was undertaken. Identified articles were deduplicated, screened, and extracted for information relevant to the research question using PRISMA guidelines. Data extraction considered descriptive data and metadata including study type, participants, overall objectives, chosen methodologies, and their relationship to the research question. The variety of study types prompted a thematic synthesis to achieve greater comprehension of the existing knowledge base. Results. Descriptive categories were analysed to reveal five themes relevant to the presence and influence of heuristics and biases in decisions made by older people when allocating home care resources. Principally, CDC is implemented to afford autonomy but is complicated by the decision-making environment. Choice and decision making are both specific to the individual, and the processes employed for decision making vary over the life-course. Decision quality can be improved through the identification and mitigation of complicating factors. A trauma-informed approach is a framework for organisational (synonym system) change interventions that address the universal prevalence and impact of trauma. This mixed methods systematic review assessed the effects of trauma-informed approaches on psychological, behavioural, and health outcomes in health-care providers and adult patients in primary care and community mental healthcare. We searched five databases and grey literature and consulted experts for reports published in January 1990 to June 2021. The quantitative descriptive and qualitative framework syntheses were integrated through a line of argument and mapped onto a logic model. We included six nonrandomised studies that evaluated eight interventions with varied theoretical developments, components, and outcomes. The most common components were budget allocation, workforce development, identification/response to violence and trauma, and evaluation. Evidence for intervention effects was limited and conflicting. Four studies reported improvement in provider readiness and sense of community, while three reported conflicting effects on provider behaviour regarding delivery of trauma-informed care. Four studies reported some improvement in patient readiness for disease management and access to services; however, the evidence for patient satisfaction was conflicting. Two studies found that patients and providers felt safe. While one study reported improvement in patient quality of life and chronic pain, another found no effect on substance use, and three studies reported conflicting effects on mental health. Intervention mechanisms included a package of varied components, tailoring to the organisational needs, capacities and preferences, staff education and self-care, creating safe environments, and shared decision-making. Intervention effects were moderated by contextual (health system values, policies, governance, business models, trauma-informed movement, organisational culture, and social determinants of health) and intervention factors (buy-in from all staff, collective learning through conversations, equal attention to staff and patient well-being, and sustainable funding). No studies measured adverse events/harm, cost effectiveness, or providers' health. We need more methodologically robust evaluations of trauma-informed organisational change interventions. This scoping review explored the interventions available for children with disabilities who are restricted eaters. The review will further identify aspects of parent coaching within these interventions. Initial journal searches were completed in July 2020 and updated in July 2022 with 13 articles included in the final review, which were thematically analysed. Three major themes were identified as follows: (1) a wide range of interventions ranging from nonresponsive practices to responsive approaches to mealtimes, (2) meaningful outcomes, and (3) varying degrees of parent involvement. No articles stated they were using parent coaching as a stand-alone intervention; however, features of parent coaching were evident in some of the studies. There is no overarching framework incorporating explicit aspects of coaching approaches to support clinicians' work with children with restricted eating and their families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Domestic abuse is a worldwide public health and social issue which impacts the health and wellbeing of those experiencing abuse and their families. People living with a life-limiting illness are at increased risk of domestic abuse because they are often frail, isolated, and dependent on others. Little is known about domestic abuse and the coexistence of life-limiting illness and existing support for those experiencing or at risk of abuse. A scoping review was conducted to identify factors that shape and characterise experiences of adults with a life-limiting illness affected by domestic abuse and the health and social care practitioners and other organisations that support them. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and checklist for Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses-Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) were applied. Five databases were systematically searched from 2000 to 2021: MEDLINE; CINAHL; PsycINFO; Social Sciences Citation Index (Web of Science); and ProQuest Dissertations and Global. Twenty-one papers met the inclusion criteria. Most studies were conducted in North America, with female participants living with cancer, and conducted in health and community settings. There were no studies involving third sector organisations. A range of abusive behaviours was reported resulting in missed medical appointments, delays in screening leading to late diagnosis, and palliative rather than curable treatment. Abuse also impacted on the physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing of the person experiencing the abuse, which increased stress levels and could have a detrimental effect on their health. Identifying domestic abuse within the context of life-limiting illness was reported to be challenging for health and social care professionals, as was responding to and managing a disclosure. Further research is needed to address existing knowledge in order to inform policy and practice to identify and manage domestic abuse where it coexists with life-limiting illness. Nature-based social prescribing such as "blue prescription" promotes public health and health improvement of individuals with long-term health conditions. However, there is limited evidence explaining the relationship of contexts, mechanisms, and outcomes of implementing blue prescription programmes (BPPs) in health and social care settings that could inform policy and practice. We conducted a systematic realist review by searching PubMed, Web of Science, PsycInfo, Scopus, MEDLINE, and CINAHL for articles published in English between January 2000 and June 2022 about health and social care professionals providing referral to or prescription of blue space activities (e.g., swimming, fishing, surfing, etc.) with health-related outcomes. Components and descriptions of BPP implementation were extracted and used to develop themes of contextual factors used to develop programme theories and a logic model demonstrating the mechanisms of BPP implementation. Sixteen studies with adequate to strong quality were included from 8,619 records. After participating in BPPs referred to or prescribed by health and social care professionals, service users had improvements in their physical, cognitive (mental), social health, and proenvironmental knowledge. Service user-related contextual factors were referral information, free equipment, transportation, social support, blue space environments, and skills of service providers. Programme-related contextual factors were communication, multistakeholder collaboration, financing, and adequate service providers. Programme theories on service user enrolment, engagement, adherence, communication protocols, and programme sustainability explain the mechanisms of BPP implementation. BPPs could promote health and wellbeing if contextual factors and programme theories associated with service users' characteristics and programme delivery are considered in the design, delivery, and evaluation of BPPs. Men's sheds are a community-based organisation that allows a space for a community of men to interact and engage with one another with hands-on activities. As such, men's sheds form an appropriate setting to deliver health and wellbeing initiatives. This review aims to understand the role of Australian men's sheds with respect to the health and wellbeing of their male participants. This review was conducted in accordance with the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) following a three-step process of planning, conducting, and reporting the review. All three authors reviewed all the eligible articles. There was significant methodological heterogeneity between the sources identified (n = 11). A narrative synthesis identified three key themes: health promotion, wellbeing, and socialisation; intergenerational mentoring; and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men's health. Men's sheds serve as ideal locations for the delivery of initiatives that can positively impact on the health and wellbeing of their male participants. Furthermore, research is needed to explore the implementation and evaluation of these health and wellbeing initiatives for men in their respective communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities are often over-represented in child protection and out-of-home care services. Despite this fact, little is known or understood about their experiences with these services. This scoping review seeks to identify the published literature about children with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are engaged with child protection and out-of-home care services. Findings from the 18 studies included in this review show that these children are at increased risk of entering the child protection and out-of-home care system, with outcomes that do not fare as favourably as their nondisabled peers. This is largely due to a lack of support, training, and resources for the children, their families, and carers. Placement failure was a common theme with residential care more likely for children with greater complexity and support needs. These children are understudied, with more research needed to better understand the factors that contribute to their experiences. Greater insights into how a child protection and out-of-home care pathway can be avoided, via the provision of adequate services and supports, are also urgently needed so that fewer children are placed at risk in a system where poor outcomes are common. People with dementia and their care partners report a lack of support, treatment, and information, fragmented services, and a lack of inclusion in decisions about their care. Care planning may address these issues; however, there is scarce literature on the process or benefits of care planning for people with dementia. This review describes the literature on care planning for community-dwelling people with dementia and their care partners. A systematic scoping methodology was followed to identify the research questions, identify relevant documents, select relevant documents, chart the data, and collate, summarise, and report the results. 31 full-text documents published between 2010 and May 2020 were identified and reviewed. Seven were guidelines, seven were expert opinion pieces, 11 were intervention studies, and six were descriptive studies. The topics and process of care planning varied depending on the service context (e.g., memory clinic, home care, and primary care). Care planning was presented as a component of case management in 15 papers. Six of the 11 intervention studies reported positive outcomes, one showed no improvement, and one did not evaluate outcomes for people with dementia or their care partners. Of the six with positive outcomes, four evaluated care planning in the context of care management. There is limited evidence that care planning alone improves outcomes for people with dementia and their care partners. It is unclear whether it may have benefits when combined with care management. The effect of Reablement, a multi‐faceted intervention is unclear, specifically, which interventions improve outcomes. This Systematic Review evaluates randomised controlled trials (RCTs) describing Reablement investigating the population, interventions, who delivered them, the effect and sustainability of outcomes. Database search from inception to August 2021 included AMED, ASSIA, BNI, CINHALL, EMBASE, HMIC, MEDLINE, PUBMED, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Clinicaltrials.gov. Two researchers undertook data collection and quality assessment, following the PRISMA (2020) statement. They measured effect by changed primary or secondary outcomes: no ongoing service, functional ability, quality of life and mobility. The reviewers reported the analysis narratively, due to heterogeneity of outcome measures, strengthened by the SWiM reporting guideline. The search criteria resulted in eight international studies, five studies had a risk of bias limitations in either design or method. Ongoing service requirement decreased in five studies, with improved effect at 3 months shown in studies with occupational therapist involvement. Functional ability increased statistically in four studies at 3 months. Increase in quality of life was statistically significant in three studies, at 6 and 7 months. None of the studies reported a statistically significant improvement in functional mobility. Reablement is effective in the context of Health and Social Care. The outcomes were sustained at 3 months, with less sustainability at 6 months. There was no statistical result for the professional role regarding assessment, delivery and evaluation of interventions, and further research is justified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As global population ageing persists, understanding older adults' capacity to navigate the financial and healthcare system is essential. This scoping review examines how the concept of financial health literacy (FHL) is described and measured in the existing literature, the factors that may affect it, and its potential outcomes in middle‐aged and older adults. The review follows the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis) extension guidelines to synthesise the available evidence on this topic. We utilised electronic databases and hand searching to identify relevant literature published between 2010 and 2022. A total of 29 articles were included in this review. The results showed that FHL involved accessing, understanding and utilising financial information for planning/management of healthcare expenses and selecting appropriate health services. However, FHL is not particularly depicted as a concept in the current literature, as most studies investigated health literacy, financial literacy and health insurance literacy as separate domains that were interrelated to one another. No validated measurement tool was developed for FHL. We propose five domains to indicate the concept and measurement of FHL in middle‐aged/older adults: money management, management of medical bills, understanding health insurance, deciding on appropriate health services, and planning for long‐term care needs. Demographic variables, such as sex (females), advanced age, cognitive impairment, low education and income and racial and ethnic minorities, were found to be related to low FHL. The reviewed studies also showed that FHL was related to several outcomes, including healthcare decision‐making, physical health and psychological well‐being. Hence, future studies to develop and validate assessment tools of FHL, together with the involvement of vulnerable groups, are imperative to understanding the concept of FHL. Understanding the experiences and perspectives of users of teletherapy living with a disability and working with them, offers the potential to improve its capacity to meet their requirements. Literature examining the effectiveness of interventions delivered via teletherapy often fail to explore the motivators and implementation needs of the users. The scoping review aimed to examine the research evidence addressing user perspectives of teletherapy in delivery of allied health interventions to the disability community. The Joanna Briggs scoping review protocol methodology was employed with searches completed across five databases (ProQuest, CINAHL (EBSCO), Medline (OVID), Scopus, Google Scholar) in September 2021. The search yielded a total of 1365 results, 147 progressed to full text screening and 22 articles included in thematic analysis. Findings were split into themes addressing organisational and implementation based considerations for teletherapy, and secondly the social and contextual considerations of the Target Participants. The two areas of interest were addressed under each theme some of which include resourcing and upskilling, financial, challenging the status quo, moving from hands on to coaching and the utilisation of a hybrid model of intervention delivery. Teletherapy is viewed as creating a distinct set of benefits and challenges compared to in person service delivery, which impact individual members of the disability community differently. The scoping review identifies a strong need from recipients to trial teletherapy and experience it personally to facilitate understanding of how it can best suit an individual. More than being viewed as an alternative to in person services, teletherapy is viewed by users as better suited as a complementary service with flexibility of hybrid model opportunities valued above exclusive use of one over the other. Community‐based programmes can support healthcare systems by delivering preventive services and health promotion. This study aimed to determine the nature, range, and extent of theoretical models that guide the development of linkages between healthcare settings and community programmes. A scoping review guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and the PRISMA‐ScR was conducted. Four databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and PsycINFO) were searched on August 8, 2020. Two reviewers independently screened articles by title and abstract and divided the remaining articles for full‐text screening. Articles that described the development of a theoretical model to guide the establishment of linkages between healthcare settings and community programmes, were peer‐reviewed, and in English, were included. Articles that solely applied linkage models were excluded. One reviewer extracted data on study and model characteristics (e.g. model purpose, model components and relationships between components from the included articles). Categorical data were summarised using frequencies and percentages. Conventional content analysis was used for variables that had lengthier descriptions and variable terminology. The search identified 8926 records. Six articles describing six unique models were included in the review. Of the four models that described intended users, three (75%) identified primary care. Healthcare settings were identified in all models, with three (50%) focusing on primary care. Models used two or more linkage strategies: (1) agreeing on sharing resources, staff, and information, (2) coordinating services and referral processes, (3) planning and evaluation, (4) leadership, policies, and funding, (5) boundary spanning and (6) brokering. All models used the linkage strategy of agreeing on sharing resources, staff, and information. Findings provide important considerations for healthcare and community programme providers planning linkages. Future research should investigate the role and characteristics of community programmes in linkages, and linkages with other types of healthcare settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This integrative review aims to evaluate the experiences of health and social care practitioners with regard to how they exercise professional curiosity in child protection practice. Professional curiosity gained significant currency following the Munro Review of Child Protection (2010) in England, as a means of seeking clarity on what is happening within a family. However, a recurrent finding from child safeguarding practice reviews is that practitioners continue to struggle to exercise curiosity. This is evident within both the United Kingdom and international literature, although descriptors for the concept may differ. This study attempted to identify facilitators and barriers to applying professional curiosity to provide a greater understanding of this theoretical concept. Title and abstract review of 1428 articles identified from databases and 11 from other sources resulted in 52 papers for full‐text review. The quality of each article was appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool for qualitative studies, the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) for quantitative/mixed method studies and the Joanna Briggs framework for theoretical/opinion papers. Key findings were recorded in the Summary Table of Literature Reviewed. Data extracts were thematically analysed. Twenty‐four papers predominantly from the UK, but also from Australia, Italy, Sweden and USA formed the data set. Overarching themes that emerged from the thematic analysis included: noticing dissonance, emitting curiosity, constructing meaning, facilitators, individual professional challenges, organisational and macro‐level influences and conceptual development. This review demonstrated that professional curiosity is multifaceted and involves a whole system approach, from empowered, knowledgeable and competent frontline practitioners to creative, innovative and empathic organisations, that value staff contributions and place the child's best interests at the forefront of service development. Inadequate attendance to antenatal care has been associated with negative maternal and fetal outcomes, including stillbirth. This study aimed to identify facilitators and barriers to antenatal care attendance. A systematic search was conducted in March 2019 and updated in January 2021. Qualitative studies involving pregnant or post‐partum women up to 12 months from high‐income countries that provided data about facilitators and barriers to antenatal care attendance were sought. Meta‐ethnography was used to inform this meta‐synthesis. Fifteen studies were included in the analysis. Findings indicate that inadequate antenatal care attendance is influenced at different levels. Aspects like sociodemographic factors, difficulties navigating the health system, administrative delays, lack of flexibility and tailored care, constant change of carer and communication issues also act as barriers. These issues affect women's access to knowledge and the formation of women's beliefs and feelings towards seeking care. On the contrary, having a positive attitude towards the pregnancy, encountering empathetic healthcare professionals and availing of social support acted as facilitators. The reasons why women seek or delay attending antenatal care are multifactorial and can be explained using the Social Determinants of Health Framework. Any response needs to be taken across all levels of influence and not just focused on the individual. A better understanding of the barriers and facilitators to antenatal care might contribute to informing intervention or policy development addressing this issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The vast majority of older adults who are chronically ill rely on informal caregivers for support. Caregivers often require additional support to facilitate their role. To the best of our knowledge, there has yet to be a collation of caregiver‐identified priorities for support. Using existing research, this scoping review provides a comprehensive picture of what caregivers have indicated as priorities for support. Arksey and O′Malley's scoping review framework guides this review. We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO databases on July 2, 2021. We selected databases based on their relevance to nursing, health and social science. Inclusion criteria were peer‐reviewed research of any design, a sample population of caregivers to older adults (>55 years), manuscripts published in English and the priorities for caregiver support identified by caregivers themselves. We screened a total of 3591 records, and 33 articles met the inclusion criteria. These studies were from geographic settings across the globe and used various quantitative, qualitative and mixed‐method study designs. In our synthesis, we quantified the identified priorities within the studies using coding and content analysis. We present the following list of caregiver‐identified priorities: (1) orientation to the caregiving role; (2) self‐care and respite; (3) adapting healthcare; (4) improved supports; (5) information needs; (6) access to resources; (7) financial assistance. Policymakers, healthcare professionals and non‐profit organisations can use evidence from this review to guide decisions when developing support services and interventions for caregivers. In the United Kingdom (UK), link worker social prescribing has emerged as an option to improve long‐term condition management and address primary care patients' non‐medical needs by linking patients with community‐based activities and support. Social prescribing is a complex, heterogenous intervention, and there is currently no taxonomy of components to guide its implementation and evaluation. This study aimed to identify and categorise the components of link worker social prescribing schemes in the United Kingdom. A scoping review of peer‐reviewed literature was conducted. Six databases were used to identify papers that met inclusion criteria. Eligible articles were original research studies in the United Kingdom describing interventions that included (1) initial referral of adults with chronic physical health conditions and/or unmet social needs from primary care to a link worker or equivalent role, (2) consultation with a link worker or equivalent role and (3) referral to a community‐based or government service. Of the 1078 articles identified, 32 met study eligibility criteria, representing 22 social prescribing schemes. We drew from the template for intervention description and replication (TIDieR) to identify, organise and report intervention components. We found wide variations in geography, target populations and intervention components such as activities and procedures conducted by primary care staff and link workers, organisational and staffing configurations and use of tools and financing approaches to facilitate adoption. Collaboration between social workers (SW) and community health workers (CHW) plays an essential role in addressing health inequities in the United States (US). However, little is known about the current state of CHW/SW collaboration. The objectives of this review were to identify (a) the nature, goals and setting of CHWs and SW collaboration; (b) the patient outcomes utilised to measure intervention efficacy. The literature search was conducted in December 2020 using six databases. The inclusion criteria were (1) interventions that included CHWs and SWs; (2) US‐based; (3) published between 2000–2020; (4) peer‐reviewed journal articles; (5) examining health or mental health outcomes. Search results identified 281 articles, and 15 were included in the final analysis. Settings that utilised SW/CHW collaboration included outpatient clinics (n = 10); community organisations (n = 4) or hospital (n = 1). CHW and SW interventions focused on disease prevention (n = 8), chronic care (n = 4) and mental health (n = 3). Health outcomes were the most evaluated (n = 13), and significant improvement of at least one health outcome was reported in those studies. Mental health outcomes (n = 3) were also significantly improved, while social determinants of health (n = 2) were least common and descriptive only. This is the first review of SW and CHW collaboration. Clarity regarding SW and CHW roles and scopes of practice are needed to understand better SW/CHW collaboration and its impacts on community health outcomes and improve the process of collaboration. Community organisations and municipalities support people with disabilities by providing resources and services that are essential for their engagement in the community. Their services were particularly impacted by restrictions related to the COVID‐19 pandemic. The aim of the study is to identify scientific literature that examines how community organisations and municipalities adapted services and resources provided to people with disabilities as a result of the COVID‐19 pandemic. A scoping review was conducted by searching the databases Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Web of Science Core Collection in January 2021. Fifteen studies were included from the initial search strategy of 7651 individual studies. Most of the studies were quantitative studies (73.3%; n = 11) and aimed at describing the adaptations put in place during the COVID‐19 pandemic (66.7%; n = 10). Most services and resources involved some form of preventive healthcare (66.7%; n = 10). The adaptation of modalities for delivering resources and services varied widely across organisations (e.g. online or a combination of online and in‐person) but mostly led to an improvement of the studied outcome (e.g. social skills, quality of life). Barriers (e.g. need for a reliable internet connection, lack of technology literacy from the member) and facilitators (e.g. flexibility and planning from the organisations) for these adaptations have been identified, but there is little information surrounding their cost. The results highlight that the delivery of online services has increased since the inception of the COVID‐19 pandemic with valuable outcomes. However, further research is needed to better identify the barriers, facilitators and outcomes of remote services to better face future large‐scale disasters like the COVID‐19 pandemic and to better support individuals who cannot reach in‐person services. Prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasingly prevalent and both conditions have a variety of comorbidities. There are many programs aimed at the reduction or prevention of prediabetes and/or T2DM. However, only a few studies have evaluated the effect of intervention duration and evidence‐based frameworks on specific populations at risk for prediabetes or T2DM. This review evaluated evidence‐based lifestyle intervention programs to determine whether the duration of programming relates to the efficacy of evidence‐based lifestyle change interventions. The aim was to assess relevant outcomes of these interventions in prediabetic or T2DM individuals aged 45 and older. The PRISMA framework was followed. Searches systematically screened and evaluated 2654 articles. Thirteen articles met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Databases searched included: PubMed; SCOPUS; ProQuest; Biomed Central; SpringerLink; ScienceDirect; EBSCOHost; JSTOR; Taylor & Francis; Wiley Online; BioOne; CINAHL; SAGE Journal; and Google Scholar (2009–2022). Identifying the most effective timeframe for lifestyle intervention programming to reduce the risks associated with prediabetes/T2DM can help providers develop appropriate educational initiatives for patients at risk for pre‐diabetes and/or T2DM. After screening, there were 13 studies which met the review criteria. All of the studies included in this comparative review used evidence‐based interventions. Evidence‐based lifestyle intervention programs that are ≥12 months produced significant and consistent results in mediating outcomes related to prediabetes/T2DM than <12‐month programs in adults aged 45 years and older. Rural/remote health services are vulnerable to occupational violence and aggression due to factors such as weapon accessibility, poor network coverage and distance to backup. This systematic review investigated (1) the nature of occupational violence and aggression perpetrated in rural/remote health service urgent care settings and (2) the availability and effectiveness of policies/interventions/recommendations that address occupational violence and aggression in this context. We searched Business Source Complete, CINAHL Complete, Health & Society, APAIS Health, Health Collection, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, SocIndex and Web of Science. Included articles (peer‐reviewed, no grey literature and English language) addressed occupational violence and aggression in rural health service urgent care settings. Fifteen articles matched these criteria (total [rural/remote only, where specified] N ~ 2555) and were included in the final analysis. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was applied to assess the risk of bias. A data extraction table and narrative synthesis are presented. The most common occupational violence and aggression type was verbal aggression. The primary perpetrator was patients. Risk factors reflected practitioner age, remoteness, sector, staffing, shift type and area of practice. Precipitating factors were alcohol/drugs, dissatisfaction and mental health conditions. Policy content and limitations and education/training programme effectiveness were not addressed. Community collaboration supported occupational violence and aggression prevention/management. Organisational culture should promote reporting, debriefing and post‐incident care for staff well‐being. Work environment and job/task design are priorities for safety, but with possible limitations for traumatised clients. Occupational violence and aggression policies/interventions in rural health settings must be systematically evaluated to inform best practices. Increased rates of domestic violence (DV) have been associated with events such as public holidays, seasonal variations, disasters and economic crises. Sport is seen as gendered, exemplifying hegemonic masculinity and associated violence, with the link between sporting culture and violence against women well recognised. This paper reports on a systematic review of empirical research literature exploring the link between major sporting events and incidence of DV. We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus and Proquest Central databases from inception to December 2020 for quantitative studies examining major sports events and reports of DV using a pre–post comparison design. Study quality was assessed using the Kmet quality assessment tool. The review identified 1445 records following duplicate removal. Once screened and assessed for eligibility, 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. Results are presented qualitatively due to the heterogeneity across studies. Most studies originated in North America and the United Kingdom, used police records as their data source for measuring incidences of DV and few looked beyond the day of the sports event for recorded incidences of DV. Studies reviewed suggested that there is an association between certain major sports events and increased reporting of DV. However, studies' findings conflicted with regards to whether increases were associated with contact sports, the rivalry between competing teams, whether the events were emotionally salient and whether alcohol was a contributing factor. In conclusion, there is limited research globally. Heterogeneity and conflicting findings mean that more research is needed to understand the associations and inform community prevention/interventions to address DV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global demographic changes and the strategy of 'ageing in place' will increase the importance of home care in the future. To deliver safe and high‐quality care, clinical data on nursing‐sensitive indicators and transparency are needed. A comprehensive narrative review of the literature was conducted to describe the prevalence and incidence of nursing‐sensitive indicators, namely, falls, incontinence, malnutrition, pain, pressure injury and restraints in home care. A literature search was carried out in May 2021 in PubMed and CINAHL, and 28 studies were included. Data were extracted using two extraction tables designed for this review. Prevalence and incidence rates varied widely and internationally within each indicator. The prevalence range for falls was 4.8%–48%; urinary incontinence, 33.7%–62.5%; malnutrition, 20%–57.6%; pain, 6.5%–68.5%; pressure injury, 16%–17.4% and physical restraints, 5%–24.7%. Due to various measurements and different instruments, the rates are not comparable. The use of standardised measurement and risk assessment tools to assess nursing‐sensitive indicators in home care is needed to implement suitable interventions and to prevent these indicators. There is now a significant body of research demonstrating the importance of supporting the couple's relationship for people living with dementia. Maintaining a strong relationship has been demonstrated to slow cognitive decline in dementia, reduce the caregiver's sense of burden and may delay the need for transfer into residential care. However, the potential for healthcare practitioners to deliver interventions to support the couple's relationship in the community remains largely unexplored. This scoping review aimed to locate interventions that support couples to maintain their relationship satisfaction when living with dementia. This review mapped studies across a broad range of disciplines and research methods, following the Joanna Brigg's Institute (JBI) framework. Following screening, 44 studies were identified. The approach of these programmes can be broadly grouped into three categories; Adaptation and use of shared activities to enhance the couple's relationship; Developing caregiver skills and reducing perceived burden to improve interaction and relationship quality; Connecting and strengthening the couple's relationship through sharing feelings and memories. Further research is required to explore the possibility and appropriateness of adaptation of these interventions for use by community healthcare practitioners. There is a need to identify interventions that can meet the needs of couples as dementia progresses into the moderate–severe stages. Heterogeneity and inconsistency in outcomes measurement for the couple's relationship, suggests the need to consider further how outcomes for couple's relationship quality may best be captured. It is also suggested that other existing programmes, outside of the scoping review results, but aimed at reducing dementia caregiver burden may have currently unexplored and developed outcomes for couple's relationship quality. Overwhelmingly, older Australians (people aged 65 years and older or 50 years and older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) prefer to remain living in their own home rather than moving into residential care. To enable older Australians who require assistance to remain living at home, the Federal Government provides a wide range of community care services, the provision of which has increased substantially over the last 15 years. The importance of client preferences, prefaced by the introduction of consumer directed care across community aged care services, has gathered momentum in Australia following legislation in 2015. Older peoples' preferences differ in comparison to younger people with disability and those with mental health concerns. Older people focus more on the provision of services rather than the notion of independent living itself. This scoping review aimed to explore what aspects people aged 65 years and older consider to be important qualities of aged care services delivered in the community. A computerised search in MEDLINE, CINAHL, PubMed and PsychINFO and hand searches of the Cochrane database and Google Scholar were completed in May 2022. Sixty‐two articles met the selection criteria and were included in the review. Data were extracted using a fit‐for‐purpose protocol and analysed using the Miles and Huberman Model for thematic analysis. Results identified five themes representing quality domains that describe features that are important to clients: staff knowledge, respect for clients, a person‐centred approach, a collaborative partnership with clients and clear communication. When providers of community aged care services are planning to assess the quality of their services, these findings could be used to guide their evaluation. Risky alcohol consumption among college students is a significant public health issue. In the college setting, students can collaborate in the implementation of peer‐led interventions. To date, evidence of peer‐led programmes in reducing harmful alcohol consumption in this population is inconclusive. The aim of the current scoping review is to provide a broad overview by systematically examining and mapping the literature on peer‐led interventions for preventing risky alcohol consumption by college students. The specific aims were to (1) identify the underlying focus of the interventions and assess their (2) effectiveness and (3) feasibility. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, DART‐Europe, RCAAP, Trove and ProQuest. The inclusion criteria were peer‐led interventions that exclusively addressed alcohol consumption, college students as the target population and interventional studies (randomised controlled trials, quasi‐experimental studies, systematic reviews and meta‐analyses of interventions). The methodological quality of the articles was evaluated. From 6654 potential studies, 13 were included. Nine interventions were described within these studies: Voice of Reason programme, Brief Advice sessions, Peer Theatre, Alcohol Education programme, Perceptions of Alcohol Norms intervention, Motivational Intervention, Alcohol Skills Training programme, Lifestyle Management Class and the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students. Only the last showed significant reductions in three of the four outcome measures: quantity and frequency of drinking, estimated peak blood alcohol concentration and alcohol‐related consequences. It did not significantly decrease the number of heavy‐drinking episodes. Peer interventions may be effective in preventing alcohol use among college students, although the evidence is weak and scarce. Despite unprecedented advancement in educational opportunities and access to information, maternal health literacy (MHL) and health numeracy (HN) skills remain low in North America. By enhancing MHL, the educated civic public—those who have the capacity, skills, and knowledge to apply prose and numerical health information—engages more proactively in public health practice. The purpose of this scoping review was to map the existing empirical evidence on MHL to work toward a better understanding of the practical implications for public health. We explored MHL and HN through the following research question: "How are maternal health literacy and health numeracy conceptualised in public health planning, implementation, and evaluation?" First, we employed a five‐stage methodological framework for scoping reviews and used PRISMA‐P to systematically identify eligible articles. Then, we used thematic analysis and an inductive approach guided by the research aims to identify themes related to how MHL and HN are conceptualised in empirical studies and developed an evidence table. Finally, two different reviewers coded articles using an inductive approach into six themes. We identified 1733 articles through a systematic search of five databases. After screening all the articles, 52 articles were included for thematic analysis. The final themes were: (i) sociocultural demographics; (ii) self‐efficacy; (iii) communication; (iv) information seeking and operationalisation; (v) health status; and (vi) reasoning. The research evidence demonstrated limitations concerning the impact of sociocultural background on a mother's recognition of health problems and the extent of which patient‐centred care is culturally and linguistically appropriate. The research evidence revealed an opportunity to address the sociocultural linguistic experience of mothers within public health practice. Our research team supports moving away from the biomedical model of evidence‐based medicine and adopting evidence‐based practice ensures healthcare providers develop a holistic understanding of the maternal health needs of socioculturally diverse mothers. This paper describes the development and preliminary evaluation of a novel participant‐led video (PLV) intervention to support people with disability (PWD) and cognitive and communication impairments to communicate their needs and preferences to their disability support workers. The PLV intervention was designed following a scoping literature review and workshop with PWD and close others. Subsequently, it was piloted with five primary participants with acquired brain injury and cognitive and communication impairments, five close other supporters and five facilitators. An independent mixed methods evaluation of the pilot was conducted with participants, close others and facilitators. All pilot evaluation participants reported high levels of satisfaction with the PLV intervention (mean ratings: primary participants 4.5/5.0; supporters 5.0/5.0; facilitators 4.8/5.0). When primary participants and their supporters were asked to rate how likely they were to recommend the PLV intervention, responses were extremely positive with the mean rating exceeding eight on a 10‐point scale. Qualitative analysis of interview data revealed the PLV to be a person‐centred experience for primary participants that was structured around sense of self and included having a voice and taking control in directing their lives, personal growth through participation and feeling validated through the experience. The production and use of PLV training resources has much potential to improve the delivery of support and maximise support outcomes by enabling people with cognitive and communication impairments to have choice and control, set their own goals and direct their supports.
