This paper describes the participation of informal caregivers in the discharge process when patients aged 80 and over who were admitted from home to different hospitals in Norway were discharged to long-term community care. Data for this cross-sectional survey were collected through telephone interviews with a consecutive sample of 262 caregivers recruited between October 2007 and May 2009. The Discharge of Elderly Questionnaire was developed by the research team and was designed to elicit data concerning informal caregivers' self-reported perceptions on participation in the discharge process. A descriptive and comparative analysis of Thompson's levels of participation reported by the older generation (spouses and siblings) and the younger generation (adult children and children-in-law, nieces and grandchildren) was undertaken using bivariate cross-tabulations and chi-square tests for association and trend. Analyses showed that the younger generation of caregivers received and provided information to hospital staff to a greater degree than the older generation. Overall, 52% of the informal caregivers reported co-operating with the staff to a high or to some degree. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyse factors predicting the likelihood of informal caregivers reporting co-operation with hospital staff. The odds of younger generation caregivers reporting co-operation were more than twice as high ( OR = 2.121, P = 0.045) as the odds of the older generation. Caregivers of patients with a hearing impairment had higher odds of reporting co-operation ( OR = 1.722, P = 0.049) than caregivers of patients with no such impairment. The length of hospital stay, the caregiver's and patient's gender and education level were not significantly associated with caregiver's co-operation. The informal caregivers' experiences with information practices and user participation in hospitals highlight important challenges that must be taken seriously to ensure co-operation between families and hospitals when elderly patients are discharged back to the community. This paper aims to identify the inter-relationships between the social factors that influence epidemiological patterns in the city neighbourhood of Casablanca, Zaragoza (Spain). Data for a cross-sectional survey were collected between January 2008 and April 2008 from a representative random sample of 1032 residents aged more than 15 years. The study interview contained information scales on healthcare behaviours, treatment evaluation, the number of medical consultations in the weeks pervious to the interview and the perceived health status of the respondents, using The Health Perception Questionnaire. The global index (continuous variable) allowed inferences to be made on the individual's perception of his/her own health. The assessment of social vulnerability was based on the occupational, educational and economic conditions of the interviewees. An individual was considered to belong to a vulnerable subeconomic group if he/she had a personal income of 6000 euros or less; or had no formal education or had been educated up to primary school level only; or was not in paid employment at the time of the interview. A descriptive and comparative analysis of the vulnerable and non-vulnerable population groups for perceived and diagnosed health variables was undertaken using parametric and non-parametric tests. A total of 550 interviewees (53.3%) were considered vulnerable people. Low level of instruction (primary or no education) was the main characteristic of this group (356 subjects, 64.7% of those identified as vulnerable). Binary logistic regression was used to analyse the association between belonging to the vulnerable group and a number of health variables adjusted for gender, age and area of residence. The vulnerable group had worse levels of perceived health even when controlled for gender and area of residence. In Casablanca, the place of residence is an important social stratification indicator reflected in the characteristics of the vulnerable population group and its perceived health. Care‐giving burden and internalised stigma are prevalent among family caregivers of people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Internalised stigma has been regarded as a source of care‐giving burden. But it remains unclear if high levels of internalised stigma directly contribute to an increased risk of care‐giving burden or if the effects could be buffered by psychological factors. This cross‐sectional study was to investigate the relationship between internalised stigma and care‐giving burden, and to determine the mediating effects of coping styles and social support. Data were collected from 344 Chinese family caregivers of adults diagnosed with schizophrenia in a psychiatric outpatient department of a tertiary hospital in Changsha, Hunan between April and August 2018. A self‐reported questionnaire was used to collect data anonymously. Instruments included the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale and the Caregiver Burden Inventory. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, the Spearman correlation and regression analysis to estimate direct and indirect effects using bootstrap analysis. Results showed that internalised stigma, social support and passive coping were significant correlates of care‐giving burden; social support partially mediated the relationship between internalised stigma and care‐giving burden; active coping did not show impacts on internalised stigma and care‐giving burden. This study provided social workers and healthcare providers with a better understanding of the development of care‐giving burden. Comprehensive interventions should be designed to provide supportive resources and reduce the possibilities of internalisation of stigma and passive coping, to alleviate care‐giving burden. The global population is ageing and many older people want to continue to live in their own homes, supported by home‐care services. The basis for comprehensive care is real‐time care and service plans, but more knowledge is needed about these plans to ensure that older people benefit from individual and comprehensive home care. Our aim was to describe the contents of older home‐care clients' care and service plans by using the Finnish Care Classification (FinCC), version 3.0, which includes the Finnish classification of nursing diagnoses (FiCND) and the Finnish classification of nursing interventions (FiCNI). The data were collected during spring 2018 from 71 anonymised care and service plans provided by 47 registered and practical nurses who worked for one government‐funded home‐care organisation in an urban region of Finland. We analysed the data using descriptive statistical methods. The documentation focused on daily activities, but was based on a narrow view of individual needs and comprehensive care planning. In addition, we found a statistically significant association between documented clients' needs (FiCND) and nursing interventions (FiCNI) in secretions, fluid balance, respiration and skin integrity. The client's age, gender, how long they had been receiving home care and the number of home visits they received each week were all associated with certain documented needs and interventions. Our findings provide new knowledge about inconsistent documentation related to clients' needs and nursing interventions. Collaboration between technical and home‐care professionals is needed to develop and test specific content in the FinCC related to home care. The contents should also take into account the views of older people on how they want their care and services needs to be planned and delivered so that they can lead independent and fulfilling lives. HIV‐related stigma could delay the identification and treatment of persons living with HIV (PLHIV), particularly in regions affected by ethnic conflicts. The aims of this study were to assess attitudes towards PLHIV and examine factors associated with stronger positive attitudes towards PLHIV among university students in the Serbian province of Kosovo. A cross‐sectional study was conducted at the University of Pristina temporarily settled in Kosovska Mitrovica during the academic year 2013–2014. A total of 1,017 first‐ and fourth‐year students completed an anonymous questionnaire about socio‐demographic characteristics, PLHIV, high‐risk groups for acquiring HIV and health behaviour. The main outcome measure was the Attitude Score (ATS), calculated as a sum of points awarded for all attitude‐related items. The majority of students (84%) expressed positive attitudes towards PLHIV, while others were indecisive. Most students held negative opinions about persons who use drugs (64%), homosexual persons of both genders (50%) and sex workers (42%). Being female (odds ratio [OR] = 1.49, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05–2.09) and older (OR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.03–1.24), not doing paid work while studying (OR = 3.35, 95% CI = 1.63–6.84), studying health‐related disciplines (β = −0.113, 95% CI = −0.085 to −2.747), having stronger positive attitudes towards homosexual persons of both genders (OR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.64–0.94) and not using illicit drugs (β = 2.08, 95% CI = 1.03–4.20) were associated with stronger positive attitudes towards PLHIV. Social inclusion of PLHIV and individuals at high risk for acquiring HIV could help reduce the HIV‐related stigma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to explore the stated importance of promoting healthy lifestyle habits (alcohol, eating habits, physical activity and tobacco) by healthcare professionals, and to what extent these attitudes were translated into clinical work. In 2014, healthcare professionals (n = 251) from cardiology departments in two hospitals in Stockholm, Sweden, participated in a cross‐sectional descriptive questionnaire‐based survey. The questionnaire included topics regarding stated importance and clinical work undertaken to promote healthy lifestyle habits. Personal and organisational factors of potential importance, expectations and future work were also explored. To analyse differences in stated importance and clinical work within and between lifestyle factors, comparisons of proportions were performed with 99% confidence intervals (CI). Relationships between stated importance and clinical work were investigated using logistic regression. The majority of healthcare professionals stated that it was 'very important' to promote healthy lifestyle habits among patients in general (69%–94%) and in their own clinical work (63%–80%). Despite this, always asking questions (18%–41%) or providing counselling (11%–23%) regarding lifestyle habits was reported to be rare. Overall, tobacco cessation was considered the most important behavioural change and was more often included in clinical work compared to promoting physical activity, healthy eating habits and limiting alcohol use. Clinical work was mainly influenced by to what extent the healthcare professional perceived clear organisational routines and objectives. In conclusion, we observed a gap between stated importance and clinical work in the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits among healthcare professionals. There were differences between lifestyle factors, indicating that work with tobacco cessation is the most established. Our results suggest that in order to promote patients' lifestyle habits in line with evidence‐based guidelines, healthcare management should focus on and improve organisational routines and objectives. Our global communities are becoming increasingly more diverse and interwoven; thus, research that enhances our understanding of the multidimensional relationship between depression and migration among distinct ethnic groups is imperative. This study examined the relationship between migration‐related stress and depression and the extent to which that relationship is modified by other factors, through the lens of the stress process model. This cross‐sectional pilot study used purposive sampling methods to recruit 76 first‐generation Haitian immigrants living in South and West Florida from February 2018‐May 2018. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multiple regressions were utilized to assess associations among migration‐related stress (Demands of Immigration Scale), depression (Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CESD), Zanmi Lasante Depression Symptom Inventory (ZLDSI)), and key demographic variables. Findings showed a strong positive correlation between migration‐related stress and depression (CESD (β =.606, 95% CI [.296,.556]) and ZLDSI (β =.624, 95% CI [.242,.440]). Relative to the standardized coefficient, migration‐related stress was the strongest predictor of depression after controlling for other predictors. Presence at the 2010 earthquake was the only significant moderator, showing an amplifying effect between migration‐related stress and depression (ZLDSI) for those in Haiti during the 2010 earthquake. Consideration of pre‐migration factors and the degree of migration‐related stress encountered while adapting to life post‐migration is critical because they play a significant role in shaping immigrants' depression realities. Community‐based services that incorporate or partner with established immigrants to strengthen support for the most vulnerable immigrants early on after migration could serve to mitigate migration‐related stressors and facilitate mental health promotion and prevention. While numerous studies have examined characteristics of young people who have recently initiated injecting, little attention has focused on young people who may be at high risk of transitioning to injecting. This study sought to examine the extent that socially disadvantaged young people were exposed to injecting, determine their level of hepatitis C ( HCV) knowledge and identify correlates of higher injecting exposure. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 210 young people in 2010-2011 who were exposed to injecting drug use, but had not transitioned to injecting. Respondents were primarily recruited from youth services in metropolitan Sydney. Exposure to injecting in the previous 12 months was assessed with four items that examined whether close friends, romantic/sexual partners or family members/acquaintances injected drugs, and whether they were offered an injection. Most respondents had at least a few close friends who injected drugs (65%) and almost half had been offered drugs to inject in the previous 12 months (48%). It was less common for respondents to report having a partner who injects (11%). Correlates of higher injecting exposure were examined with multivariate ordinal regression. In the multivariate model, higher exposure to injecting was independently associated with the experience of abuse or violent crime [adjusted odds ratio ( AOR) = 1.80] and reporting more favourable attitudes towards injecting ( AOR = 0.86). Higher exposure to injecting was not independently associated with patterns or history of drug use. HCV knowledge was low to moderate and was not associated with higher exposure to injecting. That drug use was not independently associated with higher injecting exposure may suggest that exposure is shaped more by social disadvantage than by drug use patterns. Health counselling is an evidence-based behavioural medicine approach and the most commonly reported form of faith-based health interventions. Yet, no research has explored the factors influencing the implementation of faith-based health counselling. Therefore, this study examined individual, organisational and environmental factors associated with offering/not offering faith-based health counselling programmes within faith-based organisations. A national, internet-based, opt-in, cross-sectional survey of faith leaders ( N = 676) was conducted (March-December 2009) to assess faith leaders' demographic information, health status, fatalism, health-related attitudes and normative beliefs, attitudes towards health counselling, institutional and occupational information, and perceptions of parent organisation support for health and wellness interventions. Most faith leaders reported offering some type of health counselling in the past year [ n = 424, 62.7%, 95% CI (59.0, 66.3)]. Results of a multivariate logistic regression showed that faith leaders reporting greater proxy efficacy (OR = 1.40, P = 0.002), greater comfort in speaking with church members about health (OR = 1.25, P = 0.005), greater perceived health (OR = 1.27, P = 0.034), and who worked at larger churches (OR ≥ 3.2, P ≤ 0.001) with greater parent organisation support (OR = 1.33, P = 0.002) had significantly higher odds of offering faith-based health counselling. Church size and parent organisation support for faith-based health interventions appear to be important factors in the presence of faith leader health counselling. The content of faith leader health counselling training should aim to increase faith leaders' confidence that church members will successfully change their health behaviours as a result of the health counselling and increase faith leaders' comfort in speaking with church members about health. Future research is needed to examine efficacious and effective dissemination methods such as the use of internet trainings, CD ROM materials and incorporating health counselling into seminary school. Glycaemic control is an essential component in diabetes management. There is growing attention on the protective effects of social capital on health, where social capital comprises features of society that facilitate co-operation for mutual benefit. The aim of this study was to investigate its role as a social determinant of health in the glycaemic control of diabetes mellitus. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a diabetes care charity institute, Isfahan, Iran from July 2010 to September 2010. Based on the level of HbA1c, all patients were divided into two groups: HbA1c level ≤ 7 as controlled diabetes and HbA1c level > 7 as uncontrolled diabetes. Sixty patients were randomly selected from each group (controlled diabetes and uncontrolled diabetes) and all agreed to participate. Social capital was measured using the Integrated Questionnaire for the Measurement of Social Capital (SC-IQ). The mean age of participants in the controlled diabetes group was 51.3 (SD: 7.8) years and 50.1(SD: 7.2) in the uncontrolled group. The mean social capital score was 185.1 (CI 95% 181.4-188.6) in the controlled group and 175.4 (CI 95% 171.8-178.8) in the uncontrolled group. There was a significant negative correlation between empowerment and political action and trust and solidarity dimensions and the level of HbA1c. In multiple regression analysis, trust and solidarity and empowerment and political action were significant predictors of the HbA1c. The results of this study suggest that social participation, trust, and empowerment and political action may determine how effectively the patient's diabetes has been managed. This initial finding warrants subsequent experimental investigations designed to identify strategies that can be used to foster the creation of social capital to improve diabetes control.
