Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) is a recent concept that helps operationalise competency‐based education. In this paper, we report on the development of EPAs and incorporation into an e‐portfolio for work‐based assessment of final year dietetics students in a community and public health professional placement. We aimed to determine the utility of the EPAs for work‐based assessment in this context. We used action research methodology to conduct broad consultation with students and supervisors using anonymous surveys and focus groups to understand their beliefs and attitudes towards work‐based assessment. Consequently, 40 EPAs with an accompanying four‐point entrustment scale were developed and mapped to the National Competency Standards for Dietitians in Australia. The EPAs and assessment tool were piloted and evaluated via an anonymous online user survey across three cohorts of students (n = 133) and supervisors (n = 67). Following mediocre pilot year evaluation results, EPAs were revised and reduced in number. While students positively evaluated the e‐portfolio, their appraisal of the EPAs and entrustment scale was less positive compared to supervisors. Supervisor evaluation of the EPA‐based e‐portfolio supported the validity, feasibility and acceptability of this novel assessment method in a community and public health setting. Assessment using EPAs, and the resulting educational data collected by the tool, offers potential for individual learners to identify areas needing development during placement, as well as potential to inform curriculum improvements and increase understanding of learning opportunities and outcomes for dietetic students in community and public health settings. This paper presents findings from the evaluation of an Australian trial of self‐managed home aged care. The self‐management model was codesigned by advocacy organisation COTA Australia, consumers and service providers. The primary aim of the evaluation was to examine whether self‐management improved consumers' perceptions of their choice, control, and wellbeing. The secondary aim was to examine whether provider prior experience with self‐managed packages significantly influenced consumers' perceptions of choice, control and wellbeing, thereby confounded trial effects. A pre‐test post‐test quasi‐experimental design and mixed‐methods design were used to collect data over nine months in 2018–2019. The pre‐trial methods and findings have been published. The post‐trial evaluation replicated the pre‐trial data collection method of an online survey (n = 60) and semi‐structured telephone interviews with consumers (n = 9), family carers (n = 13), and consumers and carers jointly (n = 2), totalling 24 interviews. Semi‐structured telephone interviews were also conducted with CEOs and senior managers from each of the seven providers (n = 14). Three providers had prior experience supporting self‐management. Parametric and non‐parametric tests examined the statistical data. Qualitative data were analysed thematically and framed according to self‐determination principles and ecological systems theory. Both datasets demonstrated that consumers reported greater choice and control at post‐trial than pre‐trial. This finding was not affected by providers' prior experience with self‐management; therefore, it was not a confounding factor. Participants reported improved wellbeing in interviews, however this was not reinforced statistically. Key desirable features of self‐management included greater autonomy and control over spending, recruiting support staff and paying lower administration fees. There was no evidence of increased risks or fraud. The research limitations included a small sample size, convenience sampling with providers recruiting interview participants, no control group and differences in trial implementation. Primary care mental health services need to expand to assist the increased number of people reporting mild to moderate mental health difficulties. In Ireland, the primary care mental health service has been recently enhanced through the employment of Assistant Psychologists (AP) in primary care psychology. This paper provides an early and brief evaluation of the impact of the AP‐enhanced model through a tripartite approach to evaluation which utilises measures of throughput, output and stakeholder satisfaction. We use data from two sources; Health service key performance indicators, and a routinely gathered minimal dataset of client measures. Results indicate that the numbers of clients seen in the period rose by 16%, that AP‐delivered treatments are beneficial for clients with mild to moderate mental health difficulties, and more than 80% of clients reported being 'totally satisfied' with the care received. The data provide early evidence that the AP model is beneficial in meeting clients' needs across a range of presentations within the service admission criteria, and that the AP‐enhanced model may offer a satisfactory solution to primary care needs. The Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit four response‐level interview schedule (ASCOT INT4) for service users was translated into Finnish. The aim of this paper was to investigate the construct validity and structural characteristics of the Finnish ASCOT. We used data from a face‐to‐face interview survey of older people receiving publicly funded home care services, which was conducted in 2016–2017 (n = 493), excluding missing values and proxy respondents (n = 334). Chi‐square tests, adjusted residuals and analyses of variance were used to examine hypothesised associations between each attribute and a number of relevant variables regarding health and well‐being, disabilities, living arrangements, social contact and support, experience of service use, and the nature of the locality and environment. Structural characteristics were explored using exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha test. The EQ‐5D‐3L and ASCOT were moderately correlated (r = 0.429; p < 0.001). The ASCOT attributes were statistically positively related to the overall quality of life. For other tested variables, we found a high number of significant associations with the control over daily life, occupation, social participation, and personal cleanliness attributes, but fewer significant associations with the other attributes. Cronbach's alpha was 0.697 and a single factor was extracted. This assessment provides evidence to support the construct validity of the Finnish ASCOT. The results support the introduction of the Finnish ASCOT into Finland for use in practical applications. Future research on its reliability would be useful. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A brief intervention using Zero‐time Exercise (ZTEx), a foot‐in‐the‐door approach, was developed to reduce sedentary behaviour and increase physical activity. ZTEx refers to the integration of simple strength‐ and stamina‐enhancing physical activity into daily life, which can be done anytime, anywhere and by anyone. This paper presents the development, feasibility, and preliminary evidence for the effectiveness of this intervention under the Hong Kong Jockey Club FAMILY Project. Needs assessments were conducted with social workers from the Christian Family Services Center(CFSC) and the Social Welfare Department (SWD). This single group prospective ZTEx intervention trial, guided by the Health Action Process Approach, included a 3‐hr core session at baseline and a 1‐hr booster session at 1‐month follow‐up. Fifty‐six participants (social and service‐related workers) from CFSC (n = 28) and SWD (n = 28) received the intervention and completed the self‐administered questionnaires at baseline. Forty‐nine and 43 participants completed the 1‐month and 3‐month self‐administered questionnaires, respectively. Fifteen participants attended the focus group interviews to share their feedback on ZTEx intervention after implementing their community‐based ZTEx activities. Intention‐to‐treat analysis was conducted with missing data replaced by baseline values. Participants reported significant decreases in sitting time by 27 (2, 52) minutes (mean [95% confidence interval]) and 36 (0.2, 71) minutes on a weekday, increases in physical activity while seated by 0.7 (0.2, 1.4) days and 1.1 (0.6, 1.7) days in a week, and improvements in perceived knowledge, outcome expectancies and plan on doing ZTEx at the 1‐month and 3‐month follow‐up, respectively. Balance and muscle strength significantly improved at the 1‐month follow‐up. The effect ranged from small to large (Cohen's d: 0.27–1.05, all p < 0.05). The qualitative feedbacks support the quantitative findings. Our findings show early evidence that ZTEx effectively reduced sedentary behaviour and enhanced physical activity and fitness. Abstract: Many patients find using medicines burdensome. This paper reports the types of issues people experience with medicines, using a validated measure of medicines burden, and the factors associated with high burden. The cross‐sectional study involved patients presenting prescriptions at pharmacies or awaiting appointments at GP practices or outpatient clinics, during October 2015 to December 2016. Adults using at least one regular medicine were asked to complete the Living with Medicines Questionnaire V3 (LMQ‐3). The LMQ‐3 contains 41 statements rated on a 5‐point scale (strongly agree to strongly disagree), with higher scores indicating greater burden, plus a visual analogue scale for self‐reporting of overall perceived burden (VAS‐burden). For a subsample, access to their medication record was requested, facilitating calculation of the complexity of their medicine regimen using the Medicine Regimen Complexity Index (MRCI). Of 1,888 questionnaires distributed, 684 were returned (36.2%) and medication records obtained for 163. The median number of medicines respondents reported using was 4 (range 1 to 26). Two‐thirds (418; 67.0%) used medicines more than once daily, 67 (10.1%) required assistance with medicines and 189 (28.3%) paid a prescription charge. LMQ‐3 scores showed a strong positive relationship with VAS‐burden scores (r = .547; p < 0.001). LMQ‐3 and VAS‐burden scores were lower in older age groups, but both increased with increasing number of medicines and dosing frequency. LMQ‐3 score was positively related to MRCI score (n = 163; r = .217; p = 0.005), whereas VAS‐burden was not. Older respondents reported lower burden in most domains. Higher numbers and frequency of medicines, paying prescription charges, needing support and deprivation increased burden across multiple domains. Factors strongly associated with high LMQ‐3 scores were: needing support, high dosing frequency and unemployment. Interventions seeking to reduce medicines burden should consider targeting individuals who need support with using medicines, use at least four medicines, more than twice daily and/or pay prescription charges. Shared Lives (adult placement) is a model of community-based support where an adult who needs support and/or accommodation moves into or regularly visits the home of an approved Shared Lives carer, after they have been matched for compatibility. It is an established but small service which has been used mainly by people with learning disabilities but which has the potential to offer an alternative to traditional services for some older people. However, there is little research on the outcomes for older users of Shared Lives. This paper presents findings from a survey of 150 older people using Shared Lives support across 10 Shared Lives schemes in England, which took place between June 2013 and January 2014. The aim was to identify outcomes for older users of Shared Lives and compare these to outcomes for older users of other social care services. In the absence of an ideal study design involving randomised allocation, statistical matching was used to generate a comparison group from the Adult Social Care Survey from 2011/12, with 121 cases matched to 121 Shared Lives cases. The main outcome measures were Social Care-Related Quality of Life (measured by the ASCOT) and overall quality of life. Findings indicated that Shared Lives can deliver good outcomes for older people, particularly for overall quality of life. In comparison to the matched group of older people using other forms of support, there was some evidence that Shared Lives may deliver better outcomes in some aspects of quality of life. Iran is a developing country with low levels of economic development and globalization and is ruled by a theocratic government. To address the lack of national research on well-being in Iran, this retrospective observational study aims to examine life satisfaction and its main determinants among Iranian adults. Using World Gallup Poll data collected between 2006 and 2017, we examined life satisfaction as a cognitive aspect of subjective well-being in relation to various factors. Our results show that income is the strongest predictor of life satisfaction, followed by standard of living, gender, social support, age, negative affect, and education. In developing countries such as Iran, which face significant economic, political, and social challenges, individuals prioritize the satisfaction of basic needs by emphasizing factors such as the socioeconomic status. In contrast, developed countries with established welfare systems may emphasize other values such as social connections and healthy lifestyle behaviors as key factors in life satisfaction. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the determinants of life satisfaction in Iran and provides insights for future research and policy making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the effects of kin, social network and the neighbourhood on an individual's well-being. The material is drawn from a community-based qualitative study that explored the attitudes and experiences of African-Caribbean adolescents and their families in the north of England towards healthy lifestyles. A convenience sample of 10 African-Caribbean households units comprising 24 adolescents (12-18 years of age) and 18 adults (22-60 years of age) participated in the study with interviews conducted in their homes. The paper focuses on the adult participants' perception of the role of social support networks and neighbourhood effects on well-being. An in-depth interview schedule was used to explore participants' perceptions on barriers to health and healthy lifestyles; and factors facilitating and inhibiting good health and healthy lifestyles. Data were subjected to thematic analysis with the aid of a Qualitative Data Analysis software package. Emerging categories were discussed with participants by conducting post interview visits and at community events. Findings indicated that participants believed that being a member of a kin network enhanced one's well-being, with such networks described as capable of providing protective support for one's health and well-being. In addition, they preferred to live in neighbourhoods with a high concentration of people of the same ethnicity, despite the effects of neighbourhood deprivation such as poor housing and lack of services. However, participants believed that ethnic segregation leads to marginalisation and further deprivation. These findings suggest that there is a need to explore further the influence of social networks and neighbourhoods on the full spectrum of an individual's well-being. The study concludes by suggesting that in considering new paradigms for the promotion of well-being, health and social care practitioners need to incorporate ways to promote social support and consider relevant psychosocial and neighbourhood factors in designing models of community well-being. This article uses an intersectionality lens to explore how experiences of race, gender, sexuality, class and their intersections are associated with depression and unmet need for mental healthcare in a population of 704 women and transgender/gender liminal people from Ontario, Canada. A survey collecting demographic information, information about mental health and use of mental healthcare services, and data for the Everyday Discrimination Scale and the PHQ-9 Questionnaire for Depression was completed by 704 people via Internet or pen-and-paper between June 2011 and June 2012. Bivariate and regression analyses were conducted to assess group differences in depression and discrimination experiences, and predictors of depression and unmet need for mental healthcare services. Analyses revealed that race, gender, class and sexuality all corresponded to significant differences in exposure to discrimination, experiences of depression and unmet needs for mental healthcare. Use of interaction terms to model intersecting identities and exclusion contributed to explained variance in both outcome variables. Everyday discrimination was the strongest predictor of both depression and unmet need for mental healthcare. The results suggest lower income and intersections of race with other marginalised identities are associated with more depression and unmet need for mental healthcare; however, discrimination is the factor that contributes the most to those vulnerabilities. Future research can build on intersectionality theory by foregrounding the role of structural inequities and discrimination in promoting poor mental health and barriers to healthcare. Men's Sheds are named within the Australian and Irish National Male Health Policies as an exemplar of male health and well-being and offer a range of formal and informal mentoring to counter the known consequences of social exclusion. The study aimed to report on whether Men's Sheds undertake mentoring programmes, and if so, who is being mentored; are mentors being trained, and if so by whom; and the perceived effectiveness of the mentoring programme. Furthermore, the study aimed to explore associations between sheds with a mentoring programme and factors that reflect an inclusive and a health-focused environment. All known Men's Sheds were invited to participate in the survey; of those, 324 (42.8%) Men's Sheds in Australia and 59 (48.0%) International sheds participated in the study between April and August 2012. Overall, 39.2% ( n = 127) of Australian sheds and 23.7% ( n = 14) of International sheds undertook formal mentoring. Youth was the most common group being mentored in both Australia (60.6%; n = 77) and Internationally (71.4%; n = 10). Over half of Australian shed co-ordinators rated their mentoring programme as moderately effective (52.8%; n = 67) and over a third as highly effective (36.2%; n = 46), while half of International shed co-ordinators rated theirs as highly effective (50.0%; n = 7). The findings from this paper support the notion that a large number of Men's Sheds offer formal mentoring programmes targeting a range of disadvantaged sub-populations, thus supporting social inclusion. Inter-generational mentoring is the most frequently occurring type of mentoring programme. While training mentors occurs at some sheds, the efficacy of this training and programme outcomes are unknown. A typology of shed types appears to be emerging based on a divergence of sheds with a more utilitarian focus and sheds that appear to embrace a health and well-being focus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After more than a decade of concerted effort by policy-makers in Canada and elsewhere to encourage older adults to age at home, there is recognition that the ageing-in-place movement has had unintended negative consequences for family members who care for seniors. This paper outlines findings of a qualitative descriptive study to investigate the health and wellness and support needs of family caregivers to persons with dementia in the Canadian policy environment. Focus groups were conducted in 2010 with 23 caregivers and the health professionals who support them in three communities in the Southern Interior of British Columbia. Thematic analysis guided by the constant comparison technique revealed two overarching themes: (1) forgotten: abandoned to care alone and indefinitely captures the perceived consequences of caregivers' failed efforts to receive recognition and adequate services to support their care-giving and (2) unrealistic expectations for caregiver self-care relates to the burden of expectations for caregivers to look after themselves. Although understanding about the concepts of caregiver burden and burnout is now quite developed, the broader sociopolitical context giving rise to these negative consequences for caregivers to individuals with dementia has not improved. If anything, the Canadian homecare policy environment has placed caregivers in more desperate circumstances. A fundamental re-orientation towards caregivers and caregiver supports is necessary, beginning with viewing caregivers as a critical health human resource in a system that depends on their contributions in order to function. This re-orientation can create a space for providing caregivers with preventive supports, rather than resorting to costly patient care for caregivers who have reached the point of burnout and care recipients who have been institutionalised. This paper explores the daily experiences and occupational needs of family carers of people who were dying, with particular reference to their daily routines and ability to undertake other varied activities during the period of care. The impact of the caring experience on these occupations was then examined to determine how, and if, these occupational needs were addressed in the community using potential and available services. An exploratory approach using grounded theory was employed to examine these experiences. Participants were recruited from metropolitan ( n = 10) and rural ( n = 4) locations across Western Australia between February and June 2009, using a purposive sampling method. A semi-structured interview guide was developed following consultation with the literature, expert opinion and piloting. Interviews were conducted in participants' homes and questions were asked about their experiences as a carer including routines, engagement in usual activities and the impact of the caring role on their daily life during and after the period of care. Each interview was transcribed verbatim and analysed to determine potential themes. Two important themes were identified: (1) Carers experienced disengagement and deprivation from their usual occupations during and after the period of care; and (2) Participants described significant disempowerment in their role as carer. Carers are 'doubly disadvantaged' as a result of their caring role; they are unable to participate in their usual occupations and they are not recognised for their contributions as carers. Carers experienced disengagement and deprivation from their usual occupations, contributing to physical, psychological and emotional difficulties and this may result in long term consequences for health and well-being. In addition, the current services and support available for carers in the community are deemed inadequate; placing further stress on a health care system which needs to cope with increasing demands as a result of the ageing population in Australia. Psychiatric morbidity has been shown to be associated with the increased reporting of a range of social problems involving legal rights ('rights problems'). Using a validated measure of psychiatric morbidity, this paper explores the relationship between psychiatric morbidity and rights problems and discusses the implications for the delivery of health and legal services. New representative national survey data from the English and Welsh Civil and Social Justice Survey (CSJS) surveyed 3040 adults in 2007 to explore the relationship between GHQ-12 scores and the self reported incidence of and behaviour surrounding, rights problems. It was found that the prevalence of rights problems increased with psychiatric morbidity, as did the experience of multiple problems. It was also found the likelihood of inaction in the face of problems increased with psychiatric morbidity, while the likelihood of choosing to resolve problems without help decreased. Where advice was obtained, psychiatric morbidity was associated with a greater tendency to obtain a combination of 'legal' and 'general' support, rather than 'legal' advice alone. The results suggest that integrated and 'outreach' services are of particular importance to the effective support of those facing mental illness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the love that exists between children with disabilities and their parents and the positive contribution that children with a disability make to families and communities, caring for a child with a disability can be difficult and demanding for parents, carers and the family. Their interaction with the many and varied health professionals they encounter can serve to either ameliorate or exacerbate these difficulties. In this paper we report on a qualitative needs analysis undertaken as part of a project to develop disability awareness resources for generic health professionals (GHP). Data were collected through focus groups ( n = 5) and individual interviews ( n = 7) with 34 parents/carers and was analysed using a process of thematic analysis. 'Partnership' was identified as the overarching theme that answers the question 'What do parents/carers want from a GHP?' Three further themes were identified that together tell the partnership 'story'. These are: 'The GHP-parent partnership', 'Qualities of a GHP', and 'The role of advocacy in the GHP-parent partnership'. Implications are presented that highlight the importance of advocacy in GHP-parent partnerships and suggest improvements in GHP education and preparation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the complex associations among coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) risk perception, social distancing, social connectedness, and loneliness, as well as the mediating effects of social distancing and social connectedness in these associations in younger, middle-aged, and older Korean adults. We used multigroup structural equation modeling to analyze the results of a cross-sectional survey of 2,400 Korean adults aged 20 years or older. We found statistically significant age group differences in the mean values of COVID-19 risk perception, social distancing, social connectedness, and loneliness. The younger group showed significant associations among all major variables in the structural equation model, while their older counterparts demonstrated a significant association between COVID-19 risk perception and loneliness. Social distancing and social connectedness mediated the effect of COVID-19 risk perception on loneliness only for the younger group. In addition, we found significant mediating effects of social connectedness on the association between COVID-19 risk perception and loneliness in the middle-aged and older groups. Our findings imply that social distancing and social connectedness have impacted Korean adults' mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to explore the associations between personality traits and depressive symptoms among Chinese adults and analyse the gender and age differences in the associations. A national representative sample of 28,628 adults aged 18 and above were selected from the 2018 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) data. The short version of the Big Five Inventory (CBF‐PI‐15) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES‐D 8) were used to measure personality traits and depressive symptoms respectively. Binary logistic regression models were employed to analyse the associations between personality traits and depressive symptoms in the whole participants, different age groups and genders respectively. After adjustment, higher levels of conscientiousness, extraversion and agreeableness were related to lower level of depressive symptoms, while higher levels of openness and neuroticism were related to higher level of depressive symptoms (p < 0.05). A significant interaction between gender and conscientiousness on depressive symptoms was found (interaction p = 0.005), and the association between conscientiousness and depressive symptoms was stronger in males than females (p < 0.001). Significant interactions between age and conscientiousness (interaction p = 0.007), agreeableness (interaction p = 0.001) on depressive symptoms were found respectively. Moreover, the associations of conscientiousness and agreeableness with depressive symptoms were strongest among old group, followed by middle‐aged group, and then young group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, conscientiousness, extraversion and agreeableness had negative associations with depressive symptoms, while openness and neuroticism had positive associations with depressive symptoms. The negative association between conscientiousness and depressive symptoms was stronger among males than females, and the negative associations of conscientiousness and agreeableness with depressive symptoms were strongest among old group, followed by middle‐aged group, and then young group. This study investigated the factors associated with clinical symptoms and level of functioning at baseline and after 4 months of navigation, in youth with mental health and/or addiction concerns involved with a family navigation service. Participants in this pre‐post study were caregivers who accessed a mental health and addictions navigation service between March 2018 and July 2019 on behalf of their youth aged 13–26 who had mental health and/or addiction concerns. Evaluations were conducted at baseline and at 4 months after entering navigation. The dependent variable, youth mental health symptoms and functioning, was assessed by caregivers using the Symptoms and Functioning Severity Scale. The sample included 345 caregivers of youth (youth: mean age 18 years, 57% male). At intake, using multiple linear regression, caregiver strain (β = 0.481, p < 0.001), youth completion of ADLs (β = −0.156, p = 0.002) and youth motivation (β = −0.110, p = 0.021) contributed significantly to variance in symptoms and functioning (R2 = 0.373, p < 0.001). Using ANOVA to compare complete pre/post data (n = 115), there was a significant main effect of time on the youth symptoms and functioning score (F[1, 107] = 9.278, p = 0.003). Furthermore, the interaction of time, youth completion of ADLs (low vs. high at baseline) and youth motivation (low vs. high at baseline) was significant (F[1, 107] = 4.699, p = 0.032). Youth with low motivation and low completion of ADLs at baseline experienced the largest improvements in symptoms and functioning after 4 months of navigation. Lifeline Australia operates crisis support services through Lifeline Crisis Supporters. An integral part of their role is to conduct online suicide risk assessments with help‐seekers. However, there is limited literature regarding suicide risk assessment practices for this population. This study aimed to examine how suicide prevention training, vicarious trauma and fears impacted suicide risk assessment behaviours of Lifeline Crisis Supporters. A cross‐sectional survey design was used to recruit a volunteer convenience sample of 125 Lifeline Australia Crisis Supporters (75.2% females; Mage = 54.9) in 2018 to participate in an online survey. Findings revealed that those with more suicide‐specific training had less risk assessment‐related fears, and that fears were not related to attitudes towards suicide prevention. There was no significant relationship between vicarious trauma and amount of training or years of experience in the role. Further, participants with higher levels of vicarious trauma demonstrated significantly more negative attitudes towards suicide prevention. Overall, training appears to be a significant factor in suicide risk assessment practice behaviours of Lifeline Crisis Supporters, highlighting a need for ongoing training and support for them. Accessibility of health services outside metropolitan centres in Australia is sub‐optimal. Recognising the barriers and enablers of healthcare access in rural, remote and regional settings is necessary to improving health service access in these disadvantaged populations. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine the determinants of healthcare use in rural, remote and regional South Australia. Cross‐sectional survey data were collected from adults living outside metropolitan Adelaide in South Australia between April 2017 and March 2018. Using a multi‐modal recruitment campaign, eligible adults were invited to complete the 44‐item consumer utilisation, expectations and experiences of healthcare instrument. Independent predictors of health service utilisation (dependent variable) were determined using negative binomial regression. The questionnaire was completed by 3926 predominantly female (52.5%) adults aged ≥50 years (56.7%), residing in regional South Australia (84.5%). Fifteen independent variables were significantly associated with health service utilisation using univariate analyses. Using negative binomial regression analysis, two predisposing factors (sex, remoteness), three enabling factors (income, health literacy, employment), two need factors (health rating, multimorbidity) and two personal health practices (alcohol, diet) were independently and significantly associated with healthcare use. Female sex (OR = 1.436, p < 0.001), good/excellent health rating (OR = 0.589, p < 0.001) and high multimorbidity (OR = 1.408, p < 0.001) were the strongest predictors of health service use. These findings will help inform the development of targeted health promotion and service engagement strategies for regional populations, which in addition to addressing workforce shortages, may help address inequity in health outcomes, particularly for groups engaging with regional healthcare services infrequently. Social intervention with children with disabilities and their families should be understood through the principles of family‐centred practice. In Spain, early intervention is understood as interventions aimed at children from 0 to 6 years old and their families. Professionals carry out the reception, assessment and intervention. This study aims to analyse the relationship between mental and physical health, caregivers' levels of anxiety and depression and the child's development during the fostering and assessment phase. The sample is made up of 135 families using child development centres in the Balearic Islands. Four questionnaires were completed: Health‐Related Quality of Life SF‐12, Anxiety and Depression Scale, Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL 1½–5) and socio‐demographic questionnaire. The results show that parents of children with disabilities have higher levels of mental health impairment than physical health impairment. They also score higher on anxiety than on depression. It is worth noting that professional discipline is a variable to be taken into account in relation to parents' perception of their child's developmental improvement. In addition, the association between the developmental subscales, where the more the child is affected, the more the parents' mental health is affected. The same pattern occurs with caregivers' levels of anxiety and depression. In short, we propose a reflection on the application of family‐centred practices during interventions, understanding the lack of professional training as a predictor of the quality of early intervention. Although volunteering has been shown to benefit cognitive health, there is a paucity of evidence on informal volunteering and subjective measures of cognitive impairment. Also, little is known about whether such relationships vary by race/ethnicity. This study aimed to examine the associations of both formal and informal volunteering with older adults' objective and subjective cognition and explore the moderating role of race/ethnicity in such associations. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study in the United States (2010–2016), 9941 older adults (51+) who were cognitively unimpaired in 2010 and alive through 2016 were included. Ordered logistic regression models were performed to assess the relationships among volunteering, cognitive impairment and race/ethnicity. Findings showed that more years of formal and informal volunteering significantly reduced the odds of objective cognitive impairment; neither volunteering type was significant for subjective cognitive impairment. The relationship between informal volunteering and objective cognition varied by race/ethnicity. Compared to non‐Hispanic Whites, non‐Hispanic Black older adults who engaged in more years of informal volunteering had a significantly higher odds of cognitive impairment over time. The current study is one of the first to look at the associations between informal volunteering and cognition. The inclusion of subjective cognitive impairment, paired with objective measures of cognition, also adds value to the knowledge body. Our findings indicate any type of volunteering is a viable approach to prevent cognitive impairment for older populations. However, more research is needed to better understand why racial/ethnic minority, particularly non‐Hispanic Black older adults, do not benefit from informal volunteering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eating disorders are mental health illnesses that are influenced by various individual, family and social factors. The present study aimed to examine the influence of self‐esteem and socialisation through social networks on eating disorder behaviours in adolescence. The sample was made up of 721 secondary school students (49.1% girls). The sample age ranged between 12 and 18 years (M = 13.89, SD = 1.37). Participants completed the Eating Attitudes Test‐26 (EAT‐26) to measure disordered eating attitudes and behaviours, the Rosenberg Self‐Esteem Scale and the ESOC‐39 scale, which measures socialisation through social networks, in addition to a brief initial sociodemographic survey. Descriptive and multivariate analyses were carried out with MANOVA. Low self‐esteem was shown to increase behaviours linked to eating disorders globally. Likewise, high socialisation through social networks was also associated with a general increase in eating disorders during adolescence. The findings of the study provide empirical support for the need to develop prevention strategies that address the improvement in self‐esteem and adequate socialisation through social networks during adolescence. The development of effective interventions along these lines could be helpful to treat the behaviours and attitudes that are observed in eating disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is increasing appreciation that group memberships can have both beneficial and damaging impacts on health. In collaboration with Nepal Leprosy Trust (NLT), this longitudinal study explores a group‐based approach to stigma reduction among people affected by leprosy in rural Nepal (N = 71)—a hard to reach and underrepresented non‐WEIRD population. Informed by the 'social cure' literature, and the progressive model of self‐stigma, we use a longitudinal design. We found that a sense of belonging to a self‐help group can facilitate education in terms of health literacy, and over time these two factors also have impacts on participants stigma. Specifically, self‐help group belonging predicted improvements in health literacy, leading to reduced endorsement of negative stereotypes and thus less stigma‐related harm among people affected by leprosy. The study offers promising evidence that group‐based interventions, which support health education, can reduce the harmful impact of stigma in very challenging contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Young carers (YCs) are children and adolescents who provide meaningful, regular support to a relative with a health problem. In France, only one programme exists to support them: the arts and respite care programme of the national association JADE. The aim of this study is to describe the profiles of YCs who had participated in this programme and to evaluate their expectations, opinions, and the evolution of their quality of life over the course of the programme. All YCs enrolled in the programme between 2017 and 2020 were invited to participate in the study. Upon arrival, the youths completed a self‐report questionnaire addressing their sociodemographic and family situations, their caregiving activities, their quality of life, and their expectations for the programme. At the end of each week, a questionnaire evaluating their opinion of the programme and their quality of life was completed. A hundred and seventeen children participated (average age: 12; 71.8% girls). Most YCs provided support to a parent or sibling with a chronic somatic disease. The support mainly concerned doing domestic tasks and providing emotional support for the relative and was significantly higher among adolescents. Their expectations were mainly about getting respite and meeting other young people. Their levels of satisfaction were high and aligned with their expectations. Their quality of life increased significantly. French YCs in this programme had characteristics comparable to those observed internationally. Minimal general knowledge of the quality of life (QoL) of people with intellectual disabilities and mental health problems (ID/MHP) in Serbia exists at present. The outcomes of the deinstitutionalisation process of these groups, which began in 2015, are very questionable—many individuals have faced challenges, and very few have been deinstitutionalised to date. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of quality of life in the domain of social belonging/community integration, the differences in this domain between persons with ID/MHP living together in institutional residential arrangements and community settings, particularly in supported housing, and the differences in the same domain relating to the service provider (governmental/state‐run or non‐governmental sector). The results of the study indicate that the level of social belonging for this specific population is low, especially on indicators such as belonging to civic or community clubs or organisations, participating in events in the local community, and establishing friendships and emotional relationships. Users of services provided by the non‐governmental sector show slightly higher scores in this domain compared to institutionalised users and users in supported housing. The organisational culture based on institutionalism is transferred to community services, leading to an inability to fulfil the basic principles of proclaimed deinstitutionalisation. The recommendations provided should enable the basing of support services for persons with ID/MHP on the principles of deinstitutionalisation while respecting their rights and facilitating their participation in local communities. To reduce the spread of COVID‐19, governments initiated lockdowns, limiting mobility and social interaction of populations. Lockdown is linked to health issues, yet the full impact on health remains unknown, particularly in more vulnerable groups. This study examined the impact on frailty and outcomes in high and low COVID‐19 risk older adults. We examined health‐related behaviours and support resources participants used during lockdown(s). Lockdown impacts in two countries were compared across four time points to examine impacts of different rules. We recruited 70 participants (aged >70 years) in England and Spain. Participants were allocated to higher or lower COVID‐19‐risk groups based on UK NHS guidelines. They completed assessments for frailty, quality‐of‐life, loneliness, exercise frequency and social interaction, coping resources and perception of age‐friendliness of their environment. The four assessments took place over a 7‐month period. Frailty was highest at Time 1 (most severe lockdown restrictions) and significantly higher in the Spanish group. It was lower at Time 3 (lowest restrictions), but did not continue to reduce for the English participants. Perceptions of the age friendliness of the environment matched these changes. Coping resources did not mitigate changes in frailty and outcomes over time, but more frequent physical activity predicted more reduction in frailty. Lockdown had a negative impact on frailty, increasing risk of adverse events for older people, but recovery once lockdowns are eased is evidenced. Receipt of long‐term care (LTC) is generally associated with worse psychological wellbeing for community‐dwelling older adults. In addition to objective features of care use (e.g. formal vs. informal care), the subjective evaluation of care provision in terms of perceived sufficiency might be particularly predictive of one's wellbeing but is seldomly considered in the literature. Substantial changes in the availability of long‐term care in past decades raise the question to what extent these effects, if present, are consistent over historic time. The present study, therefore, aims at better understanding the associations between types of LTC use and perceived care sufficiency on psychological wellbeing in a changing LTC context in the Netherlands. Data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA) were used from three points in time: 1998 (N = 582), 2008 (N = 459) and 2018 (N = 415). At each wave, participants were between 75 and 85 years of age and living independently. The results show that after adjusting for age, gender, education and health, using formal LTC had a negative effect on depressive symptoms only in 2018, but that this effect was not significantly worse compared to previous cohorts. Perceived care sufficiency was consistently negatively associated with depressive symptoms in all three points in time. This suggests that despite a less generous Dutch LTC system, psychological wellbeing among LTC users remains stable. Perceiving care provision as sufficient, however, can help older adults maintain psychological wellbeing and should be considered by researchers and policymakers that aim to improve care recipients' wellbeing. In Hong Kong, an increasing number of outdoor exercise facilities have been established in public open spaces to promote physical activity (PA) in older adults. However, no intervention is dedicated in educating the public on how to make use of these resources to fulfil the PA guidelines based on behavioural change theory. This study has two phases, phase one aims to describe the participatory development of the intervention, and phase two is the evaluation of a public outdoor exercise facilities‐based PA education intervention for community‐dwelling older adults. A mixed‐methods participatory design was used to evaluate the impact of the intervention. PA behaviour was assessed as the fulfilment of the PA recommendations by World Health Organization, and the Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity (RAPA) scale at baseline, immediately, and 3 and 6 months post‐intervention. Psychosocial constructs and physical assessments were carried out at both pre‐ and post‐intervention. Individual in‐depth interviews were conducted at post‐intervention. Forty‐seven participants were enrolled in the intervention. The average adherence rate was 90.87%. PA significantly increased after the intervention and remained elevated for the following 6 months. Post‐intervention, the qualitative findings supported the quantitative findings at both the individual and social levels. However, findings regarding the change in participants' usage of environmental resources were divergent. The intervention was well‐received by the participating older adults, as reflected by the high adherence rate. Both quantitative and qualitative data demonstrated the overall impacts of the intervention for creating sustainable changes in PA behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increasing physical activity (PA) among inactive middle‐older aged adults in rural communities is challenging. This study investigates the efficacy of a PA intervention supporting inactive adults in rural/semirural communities. Inactive participants enrolled on either a single signposting session (n =427) or a multisession pathway combining signposting with motivational interviewing (MI; n = 478). Pre‐post outcomes data assessed activity levels (International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form; Single Item Sport England Measure), self‐efficacy (New General Self‐Efficacy scale [NGSE]) and well‐being (five‐item World Health Organization Well‐Being Index [WHO‐5]). Measures were repeated at longitudinal time points (26, 52 weeks) for the MI pathway. Outcomes were contrasted with results from an unmatched comparison group receiving treatment as usual (TAU). Cost‐utility (quality‐adjusted life years [QALY]‐incremental cost‐effectiveness ratio) and return on investment (NHS‐ROI; QALY‐ROI) were estimated for short (5 years), medium (10 years) and long (25 years) time horizons. Both pathways significantly increased participants' PA. The MI pathway resulted in significantly greater increases in PA than signposting‐only and TAU. Improvements in psychological outcomes (NGSE; WHO‐5) were significantly greater in the MI pathway than TAU. Longitudinal results indicated MI pathway participants sustained increases in light‐intensity PA at 52 weeks (p < 0.001; ηp2 = 0.16). Regression analyses found baseline self‐efficacy predicted increased PA at 52 weeks, while baseline well‐being did not. The relationship between self‐efficacy and PA increased successively across time points. However, magnitude of participants' increased self‐efficacy did not predict PA at any time point. Both pathways were cost‐effective and cost ‐saving for participants aged ≥61 years from the short time horizon, with the MI pathway having greater ROI estimates. Promoting dementia‐friendly communities is an important strategy for improving quality of life for people with dementia and dementia‐family caregivers. The process of building dementia‐friendly communities should include all people living in the community. The objective of this study was to compare perceived dementia friendliness in the community among people with dementia, family caregivers, service providers, and the general public. In Taiwan, we surveyed 60 people with dementia, 140 family caregivers, and 200 members of the general public face to face, with 200 service providers surveyed by mail. Participants completed the Perceived Community Dementia Friendliness measure, consisting of seven subscales: care services, community members, community environment, community interactions, transportation, hospitals, and stores and organisations. This measure has acceptable convergent validity, construct validity, and internal consistency reliability for use in Taiwan. Differences in perceived dementia friendliness were examined by chi‐square tests/analysis of variance. Among the seven subscales, hospitals were rated with good dementia friendliness by 70% of people with dementia (n = 42); however, care services were rated poor by 23.3% of people with dementia (n = 14). Hospitals were also rated with good dementia friendliness by 39.2% of family caregivers (n = 54). Care services were rated as having good dementia friendliness by 43.5% of service providers (n = 87) and 47% of the general public (n = 86). Furthermore, community interactions were rated as good by small percentages of family caregivers (11.4%, n = 16), service providers (22.2%, n = 44), and the general public (30.9%, n = 58). Family caregivers, service providers, and the general public rated hospitals with the highest mean dementia‐friendliness score and community interactions with the lowest. Perceived community‐dementia friendliness among participants with dementia differed from that of participants without. People with dementia prioritised improving care services, while people without dementia rated facilitating community interactions as more vital. This study aims to determine economic burden or cost of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its consequences from patient perspective and to examine factors influencing the cost. This is a prevalence‐based cost‐of‐illness (COI) study. A cross‐sectional survey was carried out in Yangon, Myanmar during March and April 2018. Face‐to‐face structured interview was conducted among 264 people living with HIV (PLHIV) who were members of the selected four self‐help groups (SHGs) that provided HIV peer support. Micro‐costing approach was adopted for the cost calculation. Direct medical cost, direct non‐medical cost and indirect cost were considered. Cost of HIV per patient in the year 2017 was estimated at 228.2 international dollar (Int$). Direct medical cost was only small portion of the total cost (5.6%). Indirect cost or cost of time loss was the largest contributor among the cost components, accounted for 61.2% of the total cost. First year of the antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation and second line drug regimen have positive effect on the costs. HIV resulted in substantial economic burden for the patients. Effective interventions aim at reducing the economic burden on patients by providing compensation on transportation cost and providing job opportunity are essential. Self‐care is the most important cornerstone of diabetes treatment. As self‐care is affected by cultural beliefs, it is important for healthcare professionals to be able to adapt their educational approach and to be culturally competent. The aim of this study was to describe the cultural competence in Swedish healthcare professionals, specialised in diabetes care and to examine related factors for cultural competence. The healthcare professionals' perceived level of cultural competence was measured across three domains—Openness and awareness, Workplace support and Interaction skills—in 279 Swedish healthcare professionals from all 21 regions of Sweden, using the Cultural Competence Assessment Instrument (Swedish version—CCAI‐S). Descriptive statistics were used to describe cultural competence in healthcare professionals, and linear regression was conducted to examine factors related to cultural competence. Of the healthcare professionals studied, 58% perceived that they had a high level of Openness and awareness, 35% perceived that they had a high level of Interaction skills and 6% perceived that they had a high level of Workplace support. Two factors were found to be related to cultural competence, namely, high percentage of migrant clients at the healthcare clinic and whether the healthcare professionals previously had developed cultural competence through practical experience, education and/or by themselves. In conclusion, most healthcare professionals perceived that they had cultural openness and awareness but need more support from their workplace to improve their interaction skills. The present study is aimed at exploring the role of loneliness in the healthcare professionals' mental health during the COVID‐19 outbreak in Spain. A total of 1,421 healthcare professionals who were in contact with at least one positive COVID‐19 patient participated in a cross‐sectional online survey from April to June 2020. Mental health was measured with the General Health Questionnaire‐12, and loneliness was assessed with the 3‐item UCLA Loneliness Scale. More than 80% of participants showed a certain prone to experience mental health problems, and 90% felt that they had not enough workplace protective measures to manage COVID‐19 patients. Presence of loneliness was positively related to higher mental health problems after controlling for other covariates. Other factors related to higher mental health problems were a higher COVID‐19 risk perception, being in quarantine, checking COVID‐19‐related news several times a day and having a lower training on managing infectious diseases. Neither living alone, nor supervisor social support, were related to healthcare professionals' mental health. Results suggest that the impact of COVID‐19 in terms of mental health in the healthcare professionals could be more related to subjective appraisals of social isolation rather than to be physically alone. There were also a variety of cognitive, behavioural and training‐related factors that were associated with the healthcare professionals' mental health, and that should be potentially managed in the mental healthcare interventions. Caregivers for family or friends who are elderly people or have a disability provide critical supports, with a range of positive and negative consequences associated with their role. This research explores the positive and negative aspects of care‐giving, including the experience of abuse within the caring relationship, through an anonymous online survey of the mental health, well‐being and caring experience of Australian family carers (N = 305). The voluntary participants were recruited through local and national carer associations. Over 40% of respondents reported having experienced abuse by the person they cared for, with the most common form of abuse being verbal abuse (35% of the respondents reporting abuse) and physical abuse (14%). The experience of abuse was related to poorer mental health as measured by the DASS‐21 and a lower reported quality of life. Financial stress, lack of support and the negative impacts of care‐giving were also significantly associated with mental health and well‐being outcomes. The current research is among the first to directly assess the experience of abuse within a broad sample of caregivers, identifying this as a significant issue for caregivers. Diabetes among working population brings to society concerns on productivity and social welfare cost, in addition to healthcare burden. While lower socio‐economic status has been recognised as a risk factor of diabetes; occupation, compared with other socio‐economic status indicators (e.g., education and income), has received less attention. There is some evidence from studies conducted in Europe that occupation is associated with diabetes risk, but less is known in Asia, which has different organisational cultures and management styles from the West. This study examines the association between occupation and diabetes risk in a developed Asian setting, which is experiencing an increasing number of young onset of diabetes and aging working population at the same time. This is a cross‐sectional study of working population aged up to 65 with data from a population‐based survey collecting demographic, socio‐economic, behavioural and metabolic data from Hong Kong residents, through both self‐administered questionnaires and clinical health examinations (1,429 participants). Non‐skilled occupation was found to be an independent risk factor for diabetes, with an odds ratio (OR) of 3.38 (p < 0.001) and adjusted OR of 2.59 (p = 0.022) after adjusting for demographic, behavioural and metabolic risk factors. Older age (adjusted OR = 1.08, p < 0.001), higher body mass index (adjusted OR = 1.23, p < 0.001) and having hypertriglyceridemia (adjusted OR = 1.93, p = 0.033) were also independently associated with diabetes. Non‐skilled workers were disproportionately affected by diabetes with the highest age‐standardized prevalence (6.3%) among all occupation groups (4.9%–5.0%). This study provides evidence that non‐skilled occupation is an independent diabetes risk factor in a developed Asian setting. Health education on improving lifestyle practices and diabetes screening should prioritise non‐skilled workers, in particular through company‐based and sector‐based diabetes screening programmes. Diabetes health service should respond to the special needs of non‐skilled workers, including service at non‐office hour and practical health advice in light of their work setting. This study aimed to establish a new COVID‐19 Fear (Higher Education) scale to investigate the relationship between fear and generalised anxiety symptoms among Chinese students in mainland China, Hong Kong, and other countries. 219 Chinese university students studying in universities in mainland China (n = 76, 34.7%), Hong Kong (n = 66, 30.1%), and overseas (i.e., outside of China as international students, n = 77, 35.2%) participated in an online study from March 31, 2020 to April 4. Participants completed a newly developed COVID‐19 Fear (Higher Education) scale to measure three domains of fear including fear of infection, fear of instability and fear of insecurity related to the COVID‐19 pandemic. They also completed the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7‐item scale (GAD‐7) on the severity of anxiety symptoms. About 9.6% of the participants could be classified as exhibiting high anxiety level according to the GAD‐7. More students studying overseas (about 15%) were classified into the high GAD group when compared to students studying in both mainland China (6.6%) and Hong Kong (6.1%). MANOVA results showed that students studying in Hong Kong and overseas had more concerns related to preventive measures related to COVID‐19 than their mainland counterparts did. We concluded that international students studying away from their home country would have higher risk to develop anxiety problems during a collective trauma such as the COVID‐19 pandemic. Education institutions should provide support services including online support groups, social media groups for mutual support to alleviate the fear and anxiety of international students. The aim is to test the reliability of two alcohol screening instruments: (1) The Parent Alcohol Screening Questionnaire (PASQ5), and (2) the Social Support for an Alcohol‐free Pregnancy (SSAFP) questionnaire. This is a cohort study from the south of Sweden using repeated surveys during pregnancy. To examine if responses differed according to different data collection methods, two cohorts consisting of 289 expectant mothers and 141 fathers completed the PASQ5 both verbally (weeks 6–7) and in writing (week 12) within regular antenatal visits. One of the cohorts (n = 137/64) also completed the SSAFP in week 12 and later in week 33. The third cohort, consisting of 179 and 133 expectant mothers and fathers, respectively, completed the PASQ5 and the SSAFP twice in late pregnancy (week 31 + 33). Eight of 10 items in the PASQ5 were stable for both expectant mothers and expectant fathers when comparing verbal versus written‐delivered formats. Eight of 10 questions in the PASQ5 were stable when assessing the items in a test–retest analysis in late pregnancy for expectant mothers and nine of 10 questions were stable for fathers. The SSAFP items showed high internal consistency (0.86) for expectant mothers and excellent internal consistency (0.94) for expectant fathers. Most SSAFP items (17 of 21 for expectant mothers and 18 of 22 for expectant fathers) were also stable in a test–retest scenario in late pregnancy. Both the PASQ5 and SSAFP are reliable tools and may be helpful for clinicians who aim to have a deeper dialogue about alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Student–athletes are a vulnerable population who face many unique stressors and often engage in risky physical behaviours. Understanding that high levels of health literacy (HL) can lead to improved health knowledge and decreased negative health outcomes, the purpose of this study was to assess the HL of both student–athletes and their non‐athlete peers attending NCAA Division I, II and III institutions. Specifically, guided by Nutbeam's (2000) framework of HL, we assessed functional, communicative and critical HL in 205 student–athletes and 205 non‐athlete students using the All Aspects of Health Literacy Scale. Compared to non‐athletes, student–athletes had lower functional HL (b = 0.20; p <.001; d = 0.21), lower communicative HL (b = 0.12; p <.01; d = 0.13) and higher critical HL (b = 0.11; p <.05; d = 0.11). These findings suggest that additional interventions may be needed to increase the self‐sufficiency of student–athletes to care for personal physical health. As social work in sport is an emerging subspecialty of the profession, social workers may consider increased involvement in advocating for this group by working with individuals, coaches and teams to decrease stigma in requesting health services, attending to the complexity of interacting systems and stressors in student–athletes' lives in therapeutic interventions, and connecting them to empowering health education resources. Children from food insecure households are more likely to have substandard food and nutritional intakes, and experience developmental delays, behaviour issues and increased use of health services. In Australia, screening for household food insecurity (HFI) within health services is not undertaken routinely, limiting opportunities to optimise nutrition and healthcare. This research aimed to (a) identify the prevalence, potential determinants and outcomes of HFI among paediatric outpatients in two Queensland hospitals; and (b) identify questions suitable for screening households at risk of HFI. A cross‐sectional survey collected data from caregivers of children attending paediatric appointments at two hospitals in Brisbane, Australia (n = 148). Sociodemographic, health and household‐related characteristics were collected, and food security status was assessed using four HFI measures. Chi‐square, independent t‐tests, ANOVA and logistic regression explored associations between HFI and health‐related characteristics. A potential HFI screener was identified based on the most frequently endorsed questions from any HFI measure, and its validity was assessed through calculation of sensitivity and specificity. Prevalence of HFI was 41%, with 16% experiencing very low food security. Households with a child of 'fair/poor' health had 5.59 times greater odds of being food insecure than being food secure, compared to households with a child of 'excellent/good' health (aOR 5.59, 95% CI: 1.3–23.5). HFI was also positively associated with household chaos (p =.006). A combination of two questions was identified as a possible screening tool, with a sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 90%. This study demonstrated HFI may be highly prevalent in a paediatric outpatient population, which may result in difficulties in being able to follow nutrition prescriptions. A highly sensitive and specific two‐question screening tool was identified and may assist practitioners in paediatric healthcare settings in identifying clients who are at risk of HFI. HIV‐related stigma could delay the identification and treatment of persons living with HIV (PLHIV), particularly in regions affected by ethnic conflicts. The aims of this study were to assess attitudes towards PLHIV and examine factors associated with stronger positive attitudes towards PLHIV among university students in the Serbian province of Kosovo. A cross‐sectional study was conducted at the University of Pristina temporarily settled in Kosovska Mitrovica during the academic year 2013–2014. A total of 1,017 first‐ and fourth‐year students completed an anonymous questionnaire about socio‐demographic characteristics, PLHIV, high‐risk groups for acquiring HIV and health behaviour. The main outcome measure was the Attitude Score (ATS), calculated as a sum of points awarded for all attitude‐related items. The majority of students (84%) expressed positive attitudes towards PLHIV, while others were indecisive. Most students held negative opinions about persons who use drugs (64%), homosexual persons of both genders (50%) and sex workers (42%). Being female (odds ratio [OR] = 1.49, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05–2.09) and older (OR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.03–1.24), not doing paid work while studying (OR = 3.35, 95% CI = 1.63–6.84), studying health‐related disciplines (β = −0.113, 95% CI = −0.085 to −2.747), having stronger positive attitudes towards homosexual persons of both genders (OR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.64–0.94) and not using illicit drugs (β = 2.08, 95% CI = 1.03–4.20) were associated with stronger positive attitudes towards PLHIV. Children of young and socially disadvantaged parents are more likely to experience adverse outcomes. In response to this, a unique young families' project in Swansea, UK, was created, which drew together a team of multi‐agency professionals, to support people aged 16–24 from 17 weeks of pregnancy throughout 1,001 days of the child's life. The aim of the JIGSO (the Welsh word for Jigsaw) project is for young people to reach their potential as parents and to break the cycle of health and social inequality. This evaluation analysed routinely collected data held by the project from January 2017 to December 2018 exploring health and social outcomes, including smoking and alcohol use in pregnancy, breastfeeding, maternal diet and social services outcomes. Outcomes were compared to local and national averages, where available. Data relating to parenting knowledge and skills were available via records of 10‐point Likert scales, one collected at the start of the JIGSO involvement and one around 4–6 months later. Findings showed higher than average levels of breastfeeding initiation and lower smoking and alcohol use in pregnancy. Parents also reported enhanced knowledge and confidence in their child care skills, as well as improved family relationships. Parents with high levels of engagement with JIGSO also appeared to have positive outcomes with Social Services (their child's name was removed from child protection register or their case was closed to social services). This was a post‐hoc evaluation, not an intervention study or trial, and thus findings must be interpreted with caution. Community health and social care practitioners play an increasingly important role in the health promotion agenda, but lack confidence in having effective health behaviour change (HBC) conversations with members of the public. This study reports the development and evaluation of a training intervention based on health psychology to improve health and social care practitioner self‐rated confidence, competence and intention to use five behaviour change techniques (BCTs) in their HBC conversations. A 2‐day behavioural science interprofessional skills training course plus online learning module was designed for health and social care staff across North East Scotland, teaching five evidence‐based BCTs (e.g. Action Planning), plus person‐centred communication skills. Participants rated confidence, competence and future intention to use the BCTs on likert scales (1–10) pre‐course and post‐course, and provided acceptability data. 177 participants aged 20–64 took part, qualitative and quantitative data suggested that the course had high acceptability. Paired samples t tests (n = 120 with complete data) showed significant improvements in confidence, competence and intention following the course, which remained significant with a conservative analysis (n = 174) assuming no change for missing data. Perceived competence in Action Planning increased most during the course (mean change 3.09). In conclusion, health psychology‐based skills training can improve practitioner confidence, competence and intention to use evidence‐based BCTs; further evaluation is needed to assess practice change. Therapists and counsellors who provide trauma‐focussed therapy and support to refugees and asylum seekers are often exposed to distressing and confronting stories of war, violence, torture, loss and grief, and other atrocities. In addition to this, working within an immigration and detention context has been reported to further contribute to experiences of burnout, vicarious trauma, and other adverse consequences of working with traumatised populations. There is a scarcity of research seeking to understand how therapists address these difficulties and maintain well‐being to help them continue in this field of work. This mixed‐methods research aimed to identify and explore factors associated with mental health and well‐being among workers, with a particular focus on the role of clinical supervision. Participants were staff (n = 50) who identified as providing therapeutic support to refugees and asylum seekers either in Australia or in Australian‐run detention facilities. Participants took part in an anonymous online survey which focussed on the psychological impact of their work, professional quality of life, and clinical supervision and incorporated free‐text items. Thematic analysis of free‐text data revealed four themes related to maintaining well‐being at work including relationships and support seeking; physical and contemplative practices; professional growth; and balance and boundaries. Results from the quantitative analyses revealed several variables related to supervision that were important for well‐being. In particular, the findings suggest that rapport and overall alliance with one's clinical supervisor are protective of secondary traumatic stress and depression, respectively. Important aspects of supervision were also explored in greater depth through qualitative and quantitative inquiry, increasing our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the relationship between clinical supervision and mental health and well‐being for this group. Family support is an important protective factor for pregnant women with a foetal abnormality and can prevent adverse psychological outcomes in this population. This study aimed to explore the importance and influencing factors of family support for pregnant women with foetal abnormalities requiring pregnancy termination and then determine the correlation between family support and women's post‐traumatic stress symptoms. A mixed methods study was conducted from March 2016 to September 2017. In all, 214 participants were surveyed using self‐reported questionnaires including the demographic, family and obstetric information questionnaire, the Family Adaptation Partnership Growth Affection and Resolve Index and the Impact of Event Scale‐Revised to collect quantitative data. Semi‐structured in‐depth interviews with 28 participants were conducted to collect qualitative data. Of the pregnant women with foetal abnormalities, 35% had obstacles in family function such that family support was low. The Impact of Event Scale‐Revised score was negatively associated with total score on the Family Adaptation Partnership Growth Affection and Resolve Index as well as the score for each item on this index. In terms of family support, the demographic, family and obstetric variables hierarchically entered into the regression models significantly explained 20.0%, 26.5% and 2.6% of variation, respectively. In addition, three key themes were identified based on qualitative analyses: intensified instrumental support, inadequate emotional support and insufficient informational support. The findings showed that family support plays a protective role in preventing post‐traumatic stress symptoms following termination of pregnancy. At present, family support still needs to be improved, especially in emotional support and informational support. South Korean workers have problems getting optimal sleep because they work excessively, and this affects their sleep duration and quality. To compensate for their lack of sleep on weekdays, South Korean workers have a different lifestyle on weekends, which is reflected by the terms 'Hot Friday' and 'Monday Sickness'. However, an irregular lifestyle may be a risk factor for poor health even if insufficient sleep during weekdays is supplemented by sleep on the weekend. The objective of this study was to analyse the association between depressive mood and sleep duration variance on weekdays and weekends among South Korean workers. Data from the 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys were used. Linear regression analysis was performed to determine the association between variance in sleep duration and the Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9) score. Additional sub‐group analyses were performed to evaluate associations between variance in sleep duration and sex, marital status and perceived health status. The average sleep duration was 419.44 min on weekdays and 463.29 min on weekends. The average sleep duration on weekends was 11.73% longer than on weekdays. There was a positive association between variance in sleep and PHQ‐9 score (per 1% increased, β = 0.002, p =.0074), and variance in sleep duration affected health regardless of the direction of the change (positive: increased sleep or negative: decreased sleep). Further, sub‐group analyses showed that variances in sleep duration are associated with increased PHQ‐9 scores in females and in individuals who were single or who had problems in their marriage. Our findings suggest that there is a relationship between variance in sleep duration and depressive symptoms among South Korean workers. Thus, healthcare professionals should suggest alternatives for optimal sleep duration and sleep methods to ensure the psychiatric health of workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the contribution of background variables, personal factors (professional commitment) and environmental factors (peer support and supervision) to social work students' vicarious growth as an implication of their field practicums with trauma victims. Special emphasis was placed on examining the role of secondary traumatisation in the growth process. The sample consisted of 259 social work students at three social work schools in Israel. All students conducted their field practicums in social services and worked with trauma victims. The findings indicated that the mean level of growth was moderate and significant contribution was made by the student's year of study. Specifically, students in their third year of social work school showed more growth than did students in their first year. In addition, a positive contribution was made by the students' supervision satisfaction, professional commitment and secondary traumatisation. The findings thus highlight the possibility of students' growth during their field practicums. In addition, the study emphasises the significant role played by supervisors in these practicums, in terms of both helping students grow as well as dealing with the distress they may feel during this part of their social work training. Scene‐Based Psychodramatic Family Therapy (SB‐PFT) is a multiple‐family intervention for adolescents with behavioural problems implemented by Child Welfare Services in Spain. This intervention is aimed at promoting adolescent well‐being. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of SB‐PFT in 17 trials, measuring its impact on the emotional intelligence, parental attachment, peer attachment and antisocial behaviour of 216 adolescents (109 participating in the intervention and 107 in the control group). Repeated measures ANOVAs for pretest/posttest differences and long‐term growth models were estimated. In the short term, the intervention had a positive impact on emotional intelligence and had a stabilising effect on parental attachment, whereas the long‐term results showed significant logarithmic growth in emotional intelligence and exponential growth in parental attachment and a decrease in antisocial behaviour. However, no changes in peer attachment were shown. This study demonstrates SB‐PFT to be a potentially effective intervention for adolescents with behavioural problems and emphasises the importance of fostering emotional intelligence. Health literacy (HL) competencies vary across different health domains, and so the youth HL level plays an important role in access to healthcare. The aim of this study was to determine HL levels, the factors that affect it and health‐promoting lifestyle behaviours of university students. This cross‐sectional study was conducted with 905 students in nursing, law and Islamic sciences departments. An introductory information form, European Health Literacy Scale and Health Promoting Lifestyle Behaviors Scale were used to collect research data. The results showed that 45% of the students had a problematic HL level. Each subscale of the HL scale exhibited a significant positive correlation with the subscales of the Health Promoting Lifestyle Behaviors scale. Logistic regression showed that gender and health education were significantly associated with the HL level. We recommend increasing awareness regarding health liability and integrating HL notions into the higher education curriculum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coercive measures are a sensitive, much‐discussed ethical and legal issue in the psychiatric context. Hence, the identification of their predictors and ways of prevention are of utmost importance. The present study aimed to determine the impact of the social‐psychiatric services (SPS) in North Rhine Westphalia (NRW) on involuntary admissions according to the German Mental Health Act and to identify predictors for the reduction of these involuntary admissions. A dataset including details from 31 districts and 23 towns in NRW over a time period of 10 years (2005–2014) was analysed regarding the number of involuntary admissions, gender and age of admitted patients, and person/institution initiating the compulsory act. All 56 SPS in NRW were contacted for information on the number of clients/contacts, home visits, areas of responsibility and their involvement in involuntary admissions. Thirty SPS participated in the survey. We found a significant increase of involuntary admissions over time with significantly higher proportions of male patients and patients younger than 60 years in every year. Regarding the characteristics of SPS, a negative correlation between the number of clients contacting the SPS on their own initiative and low‐income households was observed. Additionally, the number of clients contacting the SPS on their own initiative was significantly higher in districts/towns associated with lower involuntary admission rates. These data suggest that patient‐based factors were of great importance in the context of involuntary admissions. Furthermore, the SPS and home treatment should be strengthened and intensified to achieve lower involuntary admission rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
