Fuel poverty was a significant problem during the cost‐of‐living crisis that started in 2021 as energy prices increased. Local authorities launched warm bank schemes around the United Kingdom to address this problem by providing warm spaces for residents to visit who could not heat their homes. This paper reports on an evaluation of the warm bank scheme launched by South Tyneside Council in winter 2022, locally known as Welcoming Places. Over 70 locations were opened around the borough. The evaluation consisted of two stages. In stage 1, we conducted semistructured interviews (n = 16) with residents who attended Welcoming Places and two focus groups with people running them (n = 9). In stage 2, we discussed the initial findings from stage 1 in a focus group with residents (n = 8). Three major themes are presented: "help and support with the cost‐of‐living crisis," "it's worth its weight in gold," and "capability and strength of Welcoming Places." This is one of the first evaluations of a warm bank scheme in England. We illustrate how the Welcoming Places in South Tyneside were used and experienced by residents. The scheme was valued by residents, provided significant support during the cost‐of‐living crisis, and had a positive impact on self‐reported mental health among participants. Warm bank schemes offer a practical, rapid public health response to the cost‐of‐living crisis for local authorities as well as improving residents' mental health and well‐being; however, holistic approaches must be taken to address the underlying causes of fuel poverty. Paediatric Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a disabling condition. Schools play a key role in adolescents' experiences with managing ME/CFS. However, little is known about the experiences of adolescents with ME/CFS (and their families) in schools. This paper is an incidental qualitative study, which combines data from two independent ME/CFS studies: study 1 researched ethnic minority adolescents with ME/CFS; study 2 explored Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for adolescents with ME/CFS who had not recovered after one year. Participants included: adolescents with ME/CFS; their families; and medical professionals (ME/CFS specialists and non‐specialists). Adolescents, their families, and ME/CFS medical professionals were recruited from a UK specialist paediatric ME/CFS service. Non‐ME/CFS medical professionals were recruited from the same region. Semi‐structured qualitative interviews and focus groups were undertaken. Participants' views on schools from each study were combined and thematic analysis was used to identify themes. Fifteen adolescents with ME/CFS (11–17 years old), sixteen family members, and ten medical professionals (GPs, school nurses and ME/CFS specialists) were interviewed. Four key themes were found: (1) adolescents identified school was important for aiding ME/CFS recovery, especially educationally and socially; (2) families described varying levels of support from schools and local authorities with help managing ME/CFS – some described significant practical and emotional difficulties to accessing education, whereas others recounted examples of positive supportive strategies, particularly when teachers had previous experience or knowledge of ME/CFS; (3) parents thought three‐way communication between schools, healthcare and families could improve support; (4) participants felt schools were an appropriate place for knowledge building and raising awareness of ME/CFS amongst teachers and pupils, to aid improved supportive measures. In conclusion, this paper provides rich data that highlights the importance of education and the realistic fears and hurdles for adolescents with ME/CFS remaining engaged in education and the impact on their future. Some families described positive strategies in school, which were viewed as helpful to manage ME/CFS in the classroom. These strategies could be implemented alongside knowledge building initiatives and improved communication between healthcare and education. In recent years, Meals on Wheels (MoW) services have been in a state of decline as austerity policies have become entrenched. However, this decline is occurring with little knowledge of the impact withdrawal of MoW services has on the health and well‐being of those who use them. The pandemic has raised awareness of precarity and vulnerability in relation to food that affects many people in the UK and other Westernised countries and this provides further context for the analysis presented. This paper presents findings of a mixed methods ethnographic study drawing on qualitative interviews and visual methods underpinned by social practice theory to explore the household food practices of older people receiving MoW services. Interviews were conducted with 14 older people receiving MoW, eight MoW staff delivering MoW services in the east of England and one expert. The Covid‐19 pandemic interrupted the study, and once the first lockdown began visits to the homes of older people were terminated and the remaining interviews were undertaken by telephone. The study found that a number of threats accumulated to change food practices and moved people towards vulnerability to food insecurity. Threats included difficulty accessing food and cooking due to sensory and physical challenges. The MoW service increased participants' coping capacity. As well as benefiting from the food provided, the relational aspect of the service was important. Brief encounters between MoW staff built caring relationships that developed over time to ensure older people felt valued and cared for. The study demonstrates how MoW services make a positive contribution to food practices, supporting vulnerable adults to continue living well in their own homes and protecting them from food insecurity and ill‐being. This paper explores the potential contribution of timebanking, an innovative volunteering scheme, to the co‐production of preventive social care with adults in England. Interest in volunteering in social care has increased as one proposed solution to the international crisis of a rising demand for services in juxtaposition with decreased resources. Volunteering has been particularly promoted in preventive services that prevent or delay care needs arising. Despite sustained interest in volunteering and co‐production in social care, little is known about how theory translates into practice. Reporting implementation data from a Realistic Evaluation of six case studies in England, this paper explores one volunteering scheme, timebanking. The research explores how timebanks were working, what contribution they can make to adult social care, and whether they are an example of co‐production. Data collected included interviews, focus groups or open question responses on surveys from 84 timebank members, and semi‐structured interviews with 13 timebank staff. Each timebank was visited at least twice, and all timebank activity was analysed for a period of 12 months. Data were triangulated to improve reliability. The research found that in practice, timebanks were not working as described in theory, there were small numbers of person‐to‐person exchanges and some timebanks had abandoned this exchange model. Timebanks faced significant implementation challenges including managing risk and safeguarding and the associated bureaucracy, a paternalistic professional culture and the complexity of the timebank mechanism which required adequate resources. Lessons for timebanks are identified, as well as transferable lessons about co‐production and volunteering in social care if such schemes are to be successful in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experiencing homelessness is associated with poor health, high levels of chronic disease and high premature mortality. Experiencing homelessness is known to be socially stigmatised and stigma has been suggested as a cause of health inequalities. No previous review has synthesised the evidence about stigma related to homelessness and the impact on the health of people experiencing homelessness. The present mixed‐methods review systematically searched four databases and retrieved 21 original articles with relevant data around stigma, homelessness and health. Across all studies, there was broad agreement that some people experiencing homelessness experience significant stigma from providers when accessing health care and this impacts on general health and service access. Making Every Contact Count (MECC) is a national, long‐term public health strategy in England. It supports public‐facing workers to use opportunities during routine contacts to enable healthy lifestyle changes. This paper reports the findings from an external evaluation of voluntary and community sector (VCS) delivery of MECC in the North East of England, which focused on engaging under‐represented client groups. The study aimed to (a) Establish if (and how) MECC had impacted the workforce, including changes to staff knowledge, confidence and behaviour; (b) Identify benefits, challenges and unintended consequences; and (c) Explore outcomes for service users. A multi‐stage qualitative design focused on understanding both process and outcomes. The study utilised three data collection methods, including a journey mapping workshop (n = 20), semi‐structured interviews with delivery leads, VCS workers and volunteers who had accessed MECC training (n = 11), and focus group discussions with clients (n = 22). The findings illustrated positive early outcomes, including improvements in self‐reported staff knowledge and confidence as well as emerging examples of organisational culture shift and individual behaviour change. Alongside this, the data provided a rich picture of barriers and challenges which are examined at different levels—national programme, local programme, VCS sector, partner organisation, worker and client. The research highlights clear successes of the VCS delivery model. However, it is presented as a 'double‐edged sword,' in light of associated challenges such as sector‐level funding uncertainty and accessibility of MECC resources to diverse client groups. The discussion considers issues related to the measurement and attribution of behaviour change outcomes for brief interventions, as well as fidelity, legacy and long‐term sustainability challenges. The recommendations call for system‐level analysis and comparison of different MECC implementation models, to improve our understanding of challenges, opportunities and programme reach for behaviour change intervention programmes—particularly in relation to seldom‐heard client groups. This study explores the experiences of professionals who worked with care home residents with impaired mental capacity in England and Wales during the COVID‐19 pandemic. It explores (i) how competing risks were balanced and (ii) how the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) functioned in care homes under pandemic conditions, with particular focus on its associated Deprivations of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) and Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA) systems. Between March and May 2021, we held an online survey and five focus groups aimed at professionals who worked in or with care homes during the pandemic. The study explored issues pertaining to residents with impaired mental capacity, alongside several other topics on which we report elsewhere. For this paper, we filtered data to only include responses from 'capacity professionals'. The resulting sample comprised 120 (out of 266) survey participants and 18 (out of 22) focus group participants. We performed manifest content analysis on the filtered data and found that (1) participants reported a 'massive discrepancy' between the ways different care homes balanced the risk of COVID‐19 infection with the risks associated with severe restrictions. (2) Some suggested this was due to vague guidance, as well as care home type and size. Participants told us the pandemic (3) obstructed smooth operation of statutory safeguards designed to protect residents' human rights and (4) resulted in confusion about the remit of the MCA during a public health crisis. Our findings raise concerns about the impact of pandemic‐related measures upon care home residents with impaired mental capacity. We urge further exploration and analysis of (a) the variability and inconsistency of restrictions applied at care homes, (b) the strain placed on key safeguards associated with the MCA, (c) uncertainty about the remit of the MCA during a public health crisis and (d) the human rights implications hereof. UK South Asian women are less likely to engage with cancer screening than the general population and present later with more advanced disease. Tailored interventions are needed to address barriers to these women accessing screening services. 'Wise up to cancer' is a community‐based health intervention designed to increase cancer screening uptake. It has been implemented within the general population and a study was undertaken to implement it within a South Asian female community. This paper explores one workstream of the wider 'Wise up to Cancer' study which involved working out how best to adapt the baseline questionnaire (the first part of the intervention) for South Asian women in an inner‐city location in Northern England. The aim of this workstream was to evaluate what worked well when implementing the adapted 'Wise up to Cancer' with South Asian women. In 2018, we conducted qualitative semi‐structured interviews and focus group with 14 key stakeholders; women who had received the intervention, health champions and community workers to explore their perspectives on how the adapted intervention worked within a South Asian female community. The interviews were audio recorded or (notes taken), data were transcribed verbatim and the dataset was thematically analysed. We found that training peers as community health champions to deliver the intervention to address language and cultural barriers increased participant engagement, was beneficial for the peers and supported participants who revealed difficult social issues they may not have otherwise discussed. Accessing women in established community groups, following planned activities such as English language classes worked but flexibility was needed to meet individual women's needs. Further research is needed to explore the impact of adapting 'Wise up to Cancer' for this community in terms of engaging with cancer screening. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carers of people with dementia can experience reduced health and well‐being, but little is known about how best to support them. There is some evidence to suggest that case management may improve outcomes for carers but less evidence about the features of case management services that can effectively support carers of people with dementia. Admiral Nursing operates a case management approach staffed by specialist nurses and is the only service of its kind in the United Kingdom dedicated to helping people with dementia and their carers. This paper reports qualitative findings from a mixed methods study of Admiral Nursing. For the qualitative strand of the project, data were collected in focus groups and in‐depth interviews with carers of people with dementia (n = 35) and analysed thematically using the framework approach. The aim of this analysis was to understand differences between the experiences of the carers in our sample with and without Admiral Nursing, applying Freeman's model of continuity of care (Freeman et al., Continuity of care, 2000). Participants who had received Admiral Nursing were recruited from two geographical locations and carers without experience of this service were recruited from two different areas. We found that carers in our sample felt 'supported' in circumstances where they received an ongoing service from an Admiral Nurse or other professional with expertise in dementia who was able to develop a meaningful relationship with them over time. We conclude that ongoing support, expertise in dementia and a meaningful relationship are key features of relationship continuity common in carers' reports of feeling supported. Citizenship is gaining currency in health and social care internationally as a way of making sense of the lived experiences of people with major life disruptions who face exclusion, marginalisation and discrimination, but the concept is often contested, poorly defined and understood. This paper charts the development of an empirical model of citizenship within Scotland, UK. A mixed‐method, community‐based participatory research approach using 10 focus groups (n = 77), concept‐mapping exercises (n = 45) and statement clarity and relevant ratings (n = 242) was used to develop a model of citizenship that is grounded in the lived experience of participants, which is absent from current conceptualisations of citizenship. Multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis revealed five core domains emerging from our work: 'building relationships', 'autonomy and acceptance', 'access to services and supports', 'shared values and social roles' and 'civic rights and responsibilities' representing the personal meanings of citizenship for participants. We argue that the value of this model is that it is draws upon the personal understandings and experiences of participants who emphasised the 'banal ordinariness' of its core elements. We suggest that the model makes an original contribution by clearly illustrating the practical applicability of citizenship as a concept; thus, enhancing existing theories of citizenship. Our model highlights the interplay between the relational and structural aspects of citizenship and acknowledges the barriers that marginalised groups face in claiming their citizenship rights. It offers a call to action for policy makers and practitioners to set goals that contribute to the social inclusion of those who have experienced major life disruptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies on domestic violence in ethnic minority communities highlight that social norms, family structures and cultural practices are among the key triggers of violence against women. Not surprisingly, most antiviolence interventions in these communities aim to redeem women from the oppressive features of these cultures. More recently, however, emergent scholarship advocates mobilising, rather than erasing, culture within existing anti-violence strategies. This paper explores the nature of culturally informed interventions used by front-line workers. It presents the findings of a small-scale qualitative study in Aotearoa/New Zealand, where around 13% of the population are currently deemed to be from minority ethnic communities. Interviews and one focus group were conducted with nine practitioners - including social workers, counsellors and the police - in Hamilton, Aotearoa in 2013-2014. Based on thematic analysis, the paper identifies two core strands: (a) the distinctive profile of ethnic violence and (b) the strategies that mobilise culture in antiviolence interventions. Specifically within the former strand, it was found that violence in the ethnic community was distinctive for the following reasons: the heightened sense of stigma surrounding disclosure and the consequent silence by women who suffer from it; the lack of trust in authority; and the fear of conventional safety plans necessitating longer time periods for rapport-building. Among the strategies that mobilise culture, the study found that practitioners used a family approach; engaged men in their interventions, at times reinforcing gendered roles; utilised micro-interventions; and deployed cultural tropes, especially around spirituality, as a strategy. The conclusion points to the gap between interventions that challenge and mobilise cultures. While anecdotally, the latter are perceived to be relevant and effective in antiviolence interventions, there is need for a fuller assessment and better codification of these strategies within the training of practitioners who work in these communities. With the increased attention and demand on community‐based palliative and end‐of‐life (EOL) care services comes the question of how to ensure their sustainability. Sustainability has three key attributes: acceptability, affordability and adaptability. Having established the acceptability and affordability of the community‐based service, this paper focussed on adaptability, as the remaining issue affecting long‐term sustainability. The aim of this study was to identify components of the palliative and EOL service which require adaptability to ensure long‐term sustainability for the service. A mixed methods approach was used for this study. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with family members. Semi‐structured focus groups and interviews were held with health professionals. Patient data were included to describe frequency and nature of contacts. The results were analysed using descriptive analysis. The setting was a rural town in Victoria, Australia. Nine family members were interviewed, and 16 health professionals were interviewed or took part in a focus group. Patient data included 121 participants. Four themes were identified: the uniqueness of the patient, workforce issues, collaboration between services and symptom and pain management. All themes indicated that the palliative and EOL service faces challenges which may threaten the sustainability of the service and require adaptability. Families regard palliative and EOL care as special and valued, and appreciate the endeavour, care and support taken to assist their loved one to die with dignity regardless of the location and setting. With sufficient attention paid to the adaptability of the service, community palliative and EOL care service can become more sustainable, thus offering choice and dignity for people approaching the end of life. In the UK support for older people living in residential care to undertake meaningful activities is provided by Activities Co‐ordinators. There is also a growing trend for care home providers to invite arts organisations into care settings to deliver a range of arts and cultural activities. These arts and cultural activities are delivered by Arts Facilitators, who are distinct from Activities Co‐ordinators because their practice is specifically in an art form. This paper presents findings from the Creative Journeys research project which focused on exploring the role of participatory arts within residential care home in developing and maintaining social relationships between residents and staff. One of the objectives of the research was to identify factors which facilitated or hindered the delivery and impact of the activities. Data collection methods included observations and semi‐structured interviews with residents and staff. Thematic analysis was conducted on the qualitative data. It was found that a key factor in the successful delivery of the groups was the working relationship between the Arts Facilitators and the Activities Co‐ordinators. This relationship is explored and presented under three main themes: the collaborative process, practicalities and preparation and the approach of the Arts Facilitator. The Activities Co‐ordinators' role is an under‐researched area, but they play a central role in supporting visiting arts organisations to deliver the sessions and in enabling residents to attend and engage with meaningful activities. Dementia-friendly communities ( DFCs) are a UK policy initiative that aims to enable people with dementia to feel supported and included within their local community. Current approaches to DFC creation rely on stakeholder involvement, often requiring volunteer assistance. There is though a lack of evidence that examines the reality of achieving this. This paper critically assesses the challenges and strategies for achieving stakeholder involvement in DFCs. The evidence base is drawn from an inter-agency project funded by the National Health Service in the South of England where seven DFCs were developed by steering group partners and four part-time project workers ( PWs). Data from the independent evaluation undertaken in the first year (2013-2014) of the project were analysed: 14 semi-structured interviews and a focus group examined PWs' experiences; while progress and key milestones are determined from monthly progress forms, good news stories, locality steering group minutes and press releases. Analysis was undertaken using a directed content analysis method, whereby data content for each locality was matched to the analytical framework that was drawn from Alzheimer's Society guidance. Challenges to achieving stakeholder involvement were identified as: establishing networks and including people representative of the local community; involving people affected by dementia; and gaining commitment from organisations. Strategies for achieving stakeholder involvement were recognised as: a sustainable approach; spreading the word; and sharing of ideas. By highlighting these challenges and the approaches that have been used within communities to overcome them, these findings form the foundation for the creation of DFC initiatives that will become embedded within communities. Stakeholder involvement is unpredictable and changeable; therefore, reliance on this approach questions the long-term sustainability of DFCs, and must be considered in future policies designed to enhance quality of life for people affected by dementia. Men's Sheds and similar community programmes are known to encourage help-seeking behaviour and thus improve the health and well-being outcomes for the men who attend. This paper investigates this issue through a community needs assessment of a Men's Shed programme in inner-regional Australia. The immediate purpose of this research was to help direct future funding initiatives, and provide recommendations for potential changes and improvements to the programme. A community-level needs assessment is a systematic process used to determine and address gaps or needs between current and desired conditions within a particular community. We sought to explore how particular formats and structures of Men's Sheds programmes contribute to improve social and medical well-being, and whether there are key programme characteristics that could be emulated. In total, 22 surveys and 20 interviews were conducted with the men who participated in the programme. The report finds 95% of men are satisfied with the current running of the programme. While there were areas that have been identified for improvement, most men reported that they are content with the current format and would not like to see major changes to its implementation. The results of this research confirm the known benefits of these types of programmes. In light of the challenges posed by an ageing population and tighter public budgets, governments worldwide are seeking innovative ways of improving health service delivery. Volunteers can contribute to such improvement, but this requires effective coordination and communication between volunteers and healthcare employees. In this case study, conducted in two Norwegian municipalities during September–October 2017, the aim was to understand how collaboration and coordination is carried out between several stakeholders: volunteers, volunteer family members of healthcare service users and healthcare employees. Our results show that daily cooperation was largely unsystematic, and stakeholders employed various informal communication procedures. Recruitment of volunteers was based on word of mouth and was coordinated by telephone and email. All processes were paper based, including contracting and confidential agreements. This unsystematic approach resulted in uncoordinated activities characterised by time‐consuming processes, with no quality assurance. We concluded that stakeholders would benefit from a technology solution that supports more systematic processes of recruitment, management and monitoring. This article outlines the challenges and needs for information exchange and communication between stakeholders. Furthermore, it describes possible functionality in a digital system that can address these needs, and hence improve coordination, quality of services and resource use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ageing does not reduce people's need to connect with family members, friends, and acquaintances, and neither does migration. For those older migrants living in a foreign land, connectedness with others plays a particularly important role in achieving a sense of belonging and sustaining their health and well‐being. This paper explores the issues of social isolation and loneliness among older Asian migrants in New Zealand. Data were collected from in‐depth semi‐structured interviews with Chinese‐ or Korean‐speaking migrants aged between 75 and 84 years (n = 10: all females), and from three focus groups consisting of Chinese‐ and Korean‐speaking migrants (n = 10: 7 females, 3 males) and Chinese professionals (n = 5: 3 females, 2 males) between June 2016 and December 2016. The qualitative data obtained were analysed applying a thematic analysis approach using NVivo software for group analysis by a multidisciplinary research team. The findings from the study show that older Asian migrants experienced high levels of isolation and loneliness at least at some points in their migrant lives. Most participants in this study were living alone or with only their spouse, and this living arrangement was likely to provide fertile ground for isolation and loneliness to grow in the context of later‐life migration. It was also observed that their lonely ageing ironically resulted from their efforts to preserve family relationships through avoiding being a burden, while allowing them a sort of space to maintain now barely connected lives. The participants revealed multiple ways of coping with lonely and isolated experiences in their limited social network, and these individual strategies allow us to make suggestions about how best to reduce older migrants' social isolation and loneliness in the New Zealand context and beyond. Abstract: Social isolation and loneliness are common experiences of ageing in rural communities. Policy responses and interventions for social isolation and loneliness in later life are shaped by sociocultural understandings of place, relationships and social interaction. This study examined how representations of rural community in Ireland influenced the focus, relationships and activities within a befriending intervention designed to tackle social isolation and loneliness. Through a qualitative case study conducted in 2014, the symbolic meaning of the intervention was explored using interviews and focus groups with participants (8 befriended, 11 befrienders and 3 community workers) from one befriending programme in rural Ireland. Reflected in the programme was a representation of a rural community in decline with concern for the impact on older people. There was a valuing of the traditional community defined by geographical place, perceptions of similarity among its members, and values of solidarity and mutual support. The befriending intervention represented a commitment to intra‐community solidarity and a desire by many for authentic befriending relationships that mirrored understandings of relationships within the traditional community. Identifying and alleviating social isolation and loneliness imply a set of normative values about community and the optimal social relationships within community. This paper proposes that there is a need to consider the role played by understandings of community in shaping context‐sensitive interventions to counter social isolation and loneliness in later life. Abstract: There have been substantial achievements in legislative and human rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older people and their visibility in health and social care has equally increased. These appear to have surpassed the ability of care services to meet their needs given documented concerns about the accessibility, inclusiveness and safety of care services particularly institutionalised care. This requires systemic change not easy to operationalise. This paper describes an action research initiative where six care homes belonging to a national care provider, collaborated to assess and develop their services with the support of local LGBT “Community Advisors” and academic partners. Framed within Rogers’ (2003) change management framework and combined with a participatory leadership approach, a programme of intervention was implemented comprising structured activities around seven key areas thought to promote LGBT inclusion. A formal evaluation was conducted involving 35 pre‐ and post‐intervention qualitative interviews with 18 people (community advisors; care home managers and senior managers). The findings are presented across three key themes (1) starting points on the journey; (2) challenges encountered along the journey (organisational and interpersonal); and (3) making change happen; opportunities, initiatives and gains. We make recommendations on the value of a programme approach for achieving tangible outcomes that demonstrate increased inclusion for older LGBT people living in long‐term care settings. Current demographic, policy and management changes are a challenge to hospices to develop their volunteering practices. The study upon which this paper is based aimed to explore good practice in volunteer involvement and identify ways of improving care through developing volunteering. The project consisted of a narrative literature review; a survey of volunteer managers; and organisational case studies selected through purposive diversity sampling criteria. A total of 205 staff, volunteers, patients and relatives were interviewed across 11 sites in England in 2012. This article focuses on one of the findings - the place that volunteers occupy between the hospice and the community beyond its walls. External changes and pressures in society were impacting on volunteer management, but were viewed as requiring a careful balancing act to retain the 'spirit' of the hospice philosophy. Honouring the developmental history of the hospice was vital to many respondents, but viewed less positively by those who wished to modernise. Hospices tend to be somewhat secluded organisations in Britain, and external links and networks were mostly within the end-of-life care arena, with few referring to the wider volunteering and community fields. Volunteers were seen as an informal and symbolic 'link' to the local community, both in terms of their 'normalising' roles in the hospice and as providing a two-way flow of information with the external environment where knowledge of hospice activities remains poor. The diversity of the community is not fully represented among hospice volunteers. A few hospices had deliberately tried to forge stronger interfaces with their localities, but these ventures were often controversial. The evidence suggests that there is substantial scope for hospices to develop the strategic aspects of volunteering through greater community engagement and involvement and by increasing diversity and exploiting volunteers' 'boundary' position more systematically to educate, recruit and raise awareness. Social participation in older age has been positively associated with enhanced health and wellbeing. This project examined key aspects of social participation for older people living in the community to identify what was most important for maintaining social participation in the event they transitioned to living in a nursing home. We conducted interviews and focus groups with 36 older people, aged 65 years or older living in the community in Victoria, Australia, between 2020 and 2022. Interview transcripts were analysed thematically. Participants discussed their understanding of the importance of social participation and what helped maintain it. Findings demonstrated the key importance of relationships, both old and new, in maintaining social participation, and to the preservation of a sense of identity. An important facilitator to maintaining relationships was having a physical place to go to interact. Barriers to social participation included diminishing social networks and life transitions. The impacts of the COVID‐19 pandemic were commonly referred to by all participants, outlining the obvious impediments to maintaining relationships (e.g., social isolation associated with lockdowns) and how that affected social participation. Conversely, some participants outlined the positive impact the restrictions had on their connection with friends and family. These perspectives outline the importance of being able to maintain relationships through life transitions, like a pandemic or moving into a nursing home, to optimise opportunities for social participation. Findings from this study will be relevant for aged care providers as they implement services to optimise social participation for older people who transition to living in nursing homes. Internationally, community healthcare is provided by personal health budgets or personalised schemes as part of a consumer-directed care emphasis. Although the introduction of a personalised scheme in Australia has improved the lives of many, people with psychosocial disability (PSD) and their families have experienced many challenges with service integration. Six focus groups with 17 National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) support workers were conducted between June and November 2022. Participants were asked semistructured questions about their engagement with emergency department (ED) clinicians when presenting with a person with PSD and NDIS plan. They were also asked how they contribute to service integration to improve communication practices between the two services. A qualitative, descriptive thematic analysis approach was used. Results indicate there is a need for improved service integration pathways between the ED and NDIS services. The thematic analyses identified five main themes: the ED is harmful and not safe, but nowhere else to go; make the ED safe; further training for ED staff; improving communication across services; and alternatives to the ED. This study reports NDIS support worker's experience when supporting a person they are caring for in the ED. NDIS support workers have an understanding of the needs of the people they care for;their wisdom can contribute greatly to ED clinical responses in crisis care. Background. The goal of qualitative research is to learn more about the opinions and experiences of the subjects being studied in relation to a particular question. There is a paucity of information on opportunities and challenges encountered to conduct qualitative research among the academic staffs in the health sciences. The purpose of this study was to examine the opportunities and challenges of conducting qualitative research among academic staff of health sciences in Ethiopia. Methods. A descriptive qualitative study design was conducted among health sciences academic staffs of selected public universities in Ethiopia. The study was conducted at three universities' health sciences colleges, namely, Addis Ababa University, Dilla University, and Wolaita Sodo University. Data were collected using focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and key informant interviews. MAXQDA 2020 software was used for coding and data management. A thematic analysis approach was followed to present the results. Both inductive and deductive coding approaches were used. Results. Three main themes have been identified as follows: general research practice, opportunities for qualitative research, and challenges to conduct qualitative research. Participants indicated that the availability of research opportunities will have a good impact on qualitative research engagement. Availability of grants, funding, and other incentives and demand for qualitative research in healthcare were described as opportunities for qualitative research practice. Despite the available opportunities, study participants uncovered different challenges that encountered by health academic staffs in conducting qualitative research. Resource limitations, lack of knowledge, negative attitudes or beliefs, publication, and language issues were raised as main challenges. Conclusion. Qualitative research practices were found to be low among health sciences academics. Lack of resources, training, and expertise, problems associated with publication, a lack of funding, and a shortage of experts were the main challenges in conducting qualitative research in health sciences academic settings in Ethiopia. Many older people in Britain spend Christmas day alone. The Christmas period may be especially difficult for older people who are socially isolated, living with dementia or who have physical impairments, and may feel particularly marginalised at this time of year. This paper draws on evaluative research findings from a community Christmas event held in December 2014 at the University of Salford for older people and their carers who would be on their own on Christmas day. A multi-method approach was employed, seven guests took part in semi-structured interviews to explore their experiences and perceptions of the event, seven staff and student volunteers participated in a group interview to explore and discuss their participation in the event. Data collection took place during April and May 2015. Interview transcripts were subjected to thematic analysis. Three overarching themes were identified from the interviews: 'reasons for participants attending the event', 'a different Christmas day: the impact on guests and volunteers', and 'learning, planning and moving forwards'. The findings illustrate that a range of people participated in the Christmas day event for a variety of reasons. The event itself had a positive impact, including the shared experience of social belonging, for all involved. There are tangible longer term benefits as a result of the event, such as ongoing contact between participants and the development of supportive networks in the local community. The purpose of this paper was to describe occupational hazards for nurses working in home care ( HC) and explore how they differ across the rural-to-urban gradient. Responses ( n = 823) from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2012 of HC nurses registered to practise nursing in the Province of Ontario, Canada were used. Using chi-square analysis and posthoc pairwise tests with a Bonferroni correction, 14 occupational hazards were individually tested for differences between four geographical settings (rural, town, suburban or urban areas). Our study reports that in addition to common occupational hazards that all HC nurses experience, the frequency of experiencing some hazards varies based on geographic setting. These specific hazards include exposure to: aggressive pets, environmental tobacco smoke, oxygen equipment, unsafe neighbourhoods and pests. Findings from this study suggest that a relationship exists between where a patient's home is located and the types of occupational hazards that may be experienced by HC staff. This research is useful for HC organisations in developing staff training programmes to recognise and manage occupational hazards that workers are likely to encounter. Home healthcare and policy leaders may use these findings to develop and implement educational and other strategies to reduce risk and manage exposures across the rural-to-urban gradient. Although grandparents play a significant role in caring for their grandchildren in Asian culture, few studies have examined how grandparents from skipped families care for their children in rural areas. This study aims to explore grandparents' perceptions and experiences in providing care for their grandchildren in rural Thailand, where support is limited. Utilizing a qualitative approach, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with 20 grandparents caring for children under 5 years old. The coding of interview transcripts was followed by thematic analysis. In this study, the participants shared their experiences about raising and caring for their grandchildren in rural areas. "We were held in bondage" is the overarching theme. Interviews revealed two main themes: (1) feeling of burden, divided into the following three subthemes: lack of parenting skills, worries regarding grandchildren's health and well-being, and emotional stress and financial/physical strain; (2) maintaining family bonds, which were further divided into the following subthemes: supporting adult children, being parents again, and becoming more loving and bonded. According to the findings, healthcare providers may be able to anticipate the needs of grandparents in rural areas and provide support, culturally relevant interventions, and training programs for grandparents to care for their grandchildren. Further research is essential to explore the dynamics of family bonding and responsibilities in Thai families and to develop interventions supporting these families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports qualitative findings from a pilot study that explored the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer ( LGBTQ) education needs of home-care service providers working in one large, urban Canadian city. The pilot study builds upon research that has documented barriers to health services for diversely situated LGBTQ people, which function to limit access to good-quality healthcare. LGBTQ activists, organisations and allies have underscored the need for health provider education related to the unique health and service experiences of sexual and gender minority communities. However, the home-care sector is generally overlooked in this important body of research literature. We used purposeful convenience sampling to conduct four focus groups and two individual interviews with a total of 15 professionally diverse home-care service providers. Data collection was carried out from January 2011 to July 2012 and data were analysed using grounded theory methods towards the identification of the overarching theme, 'provider education' and it had two sub-themes: (i) experiences of LGBTQ education; and (ii) recommendations for LGBTQ education. The study findings raise important questions about limited and uneven access to adequate LGBTQ education for home-care service providers, suggest important policy implications for the education and health sectors, and point to the need for anti-oppression principles in the development of education initiatives. Objective. This study aimed to explore the influencing factors to the practice of cardiovascular disease (CVD) preventive behaviors among rural residents based on socio-ecological model (SEM). Methods. We used a mixed-methods research using the sequential explanatory design. From a total of 109 participants, quantitative data including CVD preventive behavior, self-efficacy, social support, and sense of community were collected using previously developed measurement tools. For quantitative research, descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were conducted. For quantitative research, descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were conducted. Questions for qualitative research were constructed based on SEM for the three subareas identified in quantitative research. Qualitative content analysis was conducted on qualitative data collected through focus group interviews from 14 participants. Results. According to quantitative research results, participants had a low level of practice in physical exercise, stress management, and self-checking among seven subdomains. At the individual level, self-efficacy was positively correlated with sleep management, and at the interpersonal level, family support was positively correlated with smoking cessation and support from significant others was positively correlated with stress management. On the other hand, at the community level, sense of community did not show significant correlation with the practice of cardiovascular disease prevention. Next, according to qualitative research results, 8 themes were identified in three levels as obstacles. At the personal level, overwork, loneliness, and lack of knowledge about CVD; at the interpersonal and community level, decreased activities with residents due to increased individualistic tendencies and decreased sense of community; and at the community environmental level, inconvenience of sidewalks, lack of community space, and insufficient functioning of village health clinics. Conclusion. In order to reduce obstacles to health behavior practice to prevent cardiovascular disease, multidimensional efforts are needed in terms of socio-ecological aspects. Background. Community engagement is crucial for effective and sustainable sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHRs) promotion. Community engagement in community-based health promotion initiatives is contextual and influenced by individual, community, and societal factors. In South Africa, community engagement in SRHR promotion is challenging due to numerous historical and contemporary factors including the socionormative community context and socionormative perceptions regarding SRHR matters. There is little empirical literature to guide community-based practitioners working in health promotion in understanding the contextual influences on community engagement with SRHR promotion generally or in South Africa specifically. Objective. This research aimed to explore the influences on community engagement in community-based SRHR promotion initiatives in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Methods. An ethnographic and multiqualitative study was conducted in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, involving 78 purposively and conveniently sampled participants. Findings. Three superordinate themes influence community engagement with SRHR promotion in South Africa (i) representations of the issues; (ii) perceived relevance of SRHR issues and SRHR promotion; and (iii) the relational environment, often operating in interactive ways. The themes are presented in a conceptual framework. Conclusions. Influences on community engagement in SRHR promotion in the Eastern Cape of South Africa are highly contextual. The conceptual framework arising from the study's findings could be used in community-based health promotion and primary health care in other settings to develop the understanding of factors influencing community engagement in SRHR or other sensitive or emerging health issues, and inform relevant and appropriate design and implementation of community-based initiatives. The purpose of this study was to develop a questionnaire which investigates perspectives regarding healthy aging among old patients with chronic illness. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods, including in-depth interviews, focus groups, and surveys between 2014 and 2016. Participants were recruited from the outpatient department of a medical center and a community healthcare center, 23 for interviews and 332 for surveys. The exploratory factor analysis was applied to identify the domains of the questionnaire and reduce the number of scale items. Criterion validity and reliability were evaluated. The final instrument (19 items) comprised the following four domains affected by disease: physical and psychological changes; living environment changes; social relationship changes; and changes in family life. The instrument explained 62.71% of the total variance in healthy aging perspectives. Criterion validity was supported by a significant correlation of the questionnaire with the World Health Organization Quality of Life scale (r, range: 0.14–0.65). The internal consistency of the questionnaire was 0.8 (Cronbach's α, range: 0.71–0.89). The questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument useful for examining healthy aging perspectives in older adults with chronic diseases. To enhance healthy aging for older persons with chronic disease, policy makers should acknowledge that elderly with chronic diseases not only have healthcare needs but also need attention regarding their psychological health and social and environmental relationships. This study explores the palliative care capacity of social workers in Flanders. First, it examines the frequency with which social workers in Flanders are currently performing palliative care tasks. Second, this study assesses their attitudes and competencies regarding the performance of these tasks. Third, as contextual factors also influence this performance, this study explores the level of appreciation experienced by social workers in Flanders. To achieve these objectives, a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design was used. Quantitative data were collected by distributing electronic survey questionnaires on QUALTRICS© to a theoretical sample of social workers in Flemish hospitals, community health clinics, nursing homes, home care, and health insurance services. A total of 499 social workers completed the survey in April and May 2021, of whom 352 met the eligibility criteria and were retained for analysis. Qualitative data were collected based on online focus groups between June and September 2021, in which a total of 24 social workers discussed the main survey results. Transcripts from the focus groups were analysed by using the framework method. The results indicate that the current palliative care capacity of responding social workers in Flanders is limited to tasks related to client assessment and referral, while their potential role extends beyond these tasks. With an expanded role, social workers would be better able to address the social dimensions of care, engage in politicising work, and, in turn, contribute to a holistic and multidimensional approach to palliative care. Quality of life is an important outcome in older‐adult care. Measuring resident quality of life may offer ways to improve it and to improve quality of care. However, in the UK quality of life is rarely measured as a part of routine care. Our study aimed to understand the views of care home staff about using a quality of life instrument as a part of routine care in order to support its implementation into routine practice. In a qualitative study, we conducted 35 interviews with care home staff and two focus groups with four care home managers from three care homes in East Sussex, England. Data were collected between September 2015 and February 2016. Care staff and managers were aged on average 40 (SD = 12.2) and 43.7 (SD = 14.4) years and had worked in the care sector an average of 11.4 (SD = 10.2) and 23.7 (SD = 14.1) years, respectively. Participants were predominantly female and white British. Interviews and focus groups were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings identified two overarching themes of 'Perceived gains' and 'Implementation'. Overall, there was a lot of positivity towards using a quality of life instrument in routine practice. This positivity was an important feature in how the instrument was perceived as fitting into practice. Participants identified several barriers and discussed how to overcome them. Results from the study demonstrate that routine measurement of quality of life is positively received by care staff. They believed that measuring quality of life as a part of care practice could lead to improvements in resident quality of life, staff knowledge and understanding and care practices. The findings suggest that routinely measuring quality of life as a part of normal care could also have more far‐reaching effects on the provision of person‐centred care provided by care staff. Poor lifestyle practices, combined with excess weight gain and weight retention during the preconception, pregnancy and postpartum periods can increase health risks for mothers and their children. Little is known about how workplaces impact the health and well‐being of women of child‐bearing age, particularly across work roles and settings. This qualitative descriptive study explored the enablers and barriers to the healthy lifestyle practices and well‐being of women of reproductive age within an Australian community services organisation by capturing the perspectives of both the women and workplace executives. Eleven interviews were conducted with executives (n = 12), and three focus groups and three interviews were conducted with women (n = 16). Data were thematically analysed, and six main themes were identified: blurring of the role and work environment, clarity and equity in policy and entitlements, the nature of community services work, individual responsibility for health, tiered levels of support and a management‐driven culture of awareness and support. Barriers included high‐stress roles, work targets, sedentary work behaviours, lack of clarity around policies, funding and the emotional labour associated with community services work. Hands‐on leadership, open communication, work relationships, resourcing and manager training were identified as facilitators. While findings indicate agreement between executives and the women, many executives focused on the challenges associated with pregnancy in the high‐risk workplace environment and did not perceive specific barriers for those in non‐frontline roles. Management education to generate an understanding of women's needs during this life stage and increased resourcing to facilitate workplace well‐being would be beneficial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Women should be able to access mental health services that are safe, free from harassment and abuse. Yet, research indicates that women experiencing mental health issues are often not safe in mixed gender environments, and especially in inpatient settings. This qualitative study draws on a photo‐elicitation method ('photovoice') and semi‐structured interviews to explore women's experiences of a sub‐acute women‐only prevention and recovery care (PARC) service in Australia. Twelve women experiencing mental health issues were recruited via an aftercare peer support group for recent service participants. The women took photographs guided by the central question: 'What were your experiences of a women‐only prevention and recovery care service?' They then shared these photographs with the researchers and each other, and described them in detail. Four key themes were identified by thematic analysis of the photovoice visual and narrative data: (a) Only women can understand what women go through; (b) I feel safer with no men around due to my history of trauma; (c) This environment feels safe, making it easier to talk and (d) Staff are accessible and make time for me to talk about difficult topics. Woven throughout the women's narratives was the expressed desire to feel safe and supported during the process of recovering. Aspects of service delivery that contributed to these feelings and facilitated shared support were also valued in this setting. These findings indicate that access to women‐only services and peer support are not only valued by women experiencing mental health issues, but need to be more widely available to support their recovery. This qualitative evaluation study examined the impact of unstructured intervention on people with depression in a community mental health centre in Hong Kong. In the intervention, service users initiated groups and designed group activities by themselves, with social workers as facilitators. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with service users enrolled in unstructured intervention, their family members, and service providers in 2019. Overall, 32 participants were recruited through purposive sampling. The results revealed that peer interactions helped participants to feel accepted and understood. Participants also acquired experience with emotional coping strategies and practised their interpersonal skills, and by learning new skills from peers, they were able to rebuild their self‐esteem and improve their relationships with friends and family. To cater to clients' different needs and concerns, unstructured activities should be diversified. Family and social functioning should also be emphasised in the development of unstructured intervention because the generic skills and knowledge acquired from unstructured activities with peers could help to enhance family relationships, self‐confidence, and the ability to manage issues related to working and socialising. Black and Latinx youth are disproportionately affected by violence in the United States. Hospital‐based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) have emerged as an effective response to this epidemic; however, participation rates remain low. This study aimed to identify facilitators and barriers to recruitment and engagement amongst black and Latinx youth from the perspective of HVIP staff. Employing a phenomenological approach, a purposive sample of key informants was recruited. Focus groups and semi‐structured interviews lasting approximately 90 min were conducted with representatives (N = 12) from five HVIPs in U.S. cities across the Midwest and Northeast, making up 15% of all HVIPs in the United States. Each interview was recorded and transcribed verbatim. The research team employed rigorous content analysis of the data. Three themes and subsequent categories resulted from the analysis: (1) Interpersonal/Relational Facilitators (building rapport; connecting with youth; enhancing the teachable moment; building relational health); (2) Structural/Systemic Barriers (lack of reinforcement; difficulties connecting after discharge from the hospital; hospital workflow; institutional challenges); (3) Structural/Systemic Facilitators (embedding the HVIP; trauma‐informed practices and policies). Given the limited research on black and Latinx youth and the disproportionate rate of violent injuries amongst these groups, an evidence‐based systematic approach to engage youth is essential to promote health equity. Despite evidence that stroke education is important and effective, low rates of stroke education are reported worldwide. Many stroke survivors and carers report that current stroke information does not meet their needs. The aim of the current study was to explore the perceptions of stroke survivors and carers towards stroke education in an Australian health context. A qualitative descriptive approach using focus groups was used to explore education received and preferred content, format and timing of education. Data were analysed inductively using qualitative content analysis to identify key categories, sub‐categories and an overarching theme. Fifteen stroke survivors and four carers participated. Four categories emerged: the timing of stroke education, the content of stroke education, the format of stroke education, and reactions to stroke education. Each category contained a number of sub‐categories. One overarching theme was woven through the transcripts: everyone is different and has different needs. Overall, participants generally expressed positive attitudes towards stroke education. Participants reported that education should occur at multiple timepoints and in a mixed format. All participants reported receiving stroke education in hospital, but not in the community. Stroke survivors preferred group education, while carers did not share this preference. Both stroke survivors and carers desired information about post‐stroke physical changes and computer use; however, stroke survivors desired additional information spanning a variety of areas such as motivation and driving. Tailoring of stroke education for each individual is critical to ensure that education meets the needs of stroke survivors and carers from the hospital to the community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to develop and evaluate a communication tool to guide transitional care for older patients. Using experience‐based co‐design, a communication tool resulted from the triangulation of data collected from three study phases. From 2015 to 2016, semi‐structured interviews and co‐design focus groups were undertaken with older patients, carers and healthcare practitioners across acute, rehabilitation and community settings. The evaluation phase, conducted in 2017–2018, involved use of the communication tool by healthcare practitioners in a multidisciplinary care team with older patients in acute care and semi‐structured interviews with healthcare practitioners about the acceptability and feasibility of the tool. A total of 103 patients, carers and healthcare practitioners took part. In semi‐structured interviews, patients and carers reported needing to become independent in care transitions, which was supported by discussing the transitional care plan with healthcare practitioners. Interviews with healthcare practitioners identified that their need for fast and safe care transitions was supported by team discussion and by engaging patients and carers in their transitional care plan. Co‐design focus group participants identified principles guiding transitional care including patient‐centred communication. Data collected from semi‐structured interviews and co‐design focus groups were used to develop a prototype communication tool to guide conversations about discharge care between healthcare practitioners and older patients. Following use, healthcare practitioners reported that the communication tool was feasible and acceptable although some nurses perceived that transitional care was not their role. Peer support programmes have been shown to facilitate diabetes prevention and improvements in diabetes self‐management. Worldwide, few studies have qualitatively evaluated peer support programs in inner‐regional (semi‐rural) areas, and none involving mixtures of people with and without diabetes. This study researched an inner‐regional peer support programme underway over 2 years in Australia. Fifteen participants, including ten peers and five peer support facilitators (PSFs) were interviewed using semi‐structured focus group and one‐to‐one interviews with the aim of understanding their perceptions and experiences of the programme, barriers, and ways of overcoming barriers. Participants were those with and without diabetes. The main themes identified were; benefits of the programme, factors affecting recruitment and retention, challenges and barriers to programme participation, PSF reflections on peer support training, and recommendations to improve the programme. Participants identified increased knowledge of diet, diabetes and complications as key benefits, with greater social support and well‐being the main reasons for initial participation. The main challenges for the programme were the lack of wide community engagement before setting up the peer groups, difficulty with peer recruitment and personal difficulties in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The peer support programme was well received within an inner‐regional area and was perceived as useful in providing support and motivation to make lifestyle behavioural changes from shared experiences with peers. Volunteers are critical to supporting health care systems worldwide. For organisations that rely on volunteers, service to clients can be disrupted when volunteers leave their roles. Volunteer retention is a multi‐layered phenomenon. In this mixed methods case‐control study, we compared two naturally‐occurring volunteer groups supporting a complex primary care‐based programme for older adults in the community: volunteers retained by the programme, and volunteers that left. Our objectives were to describe differences between the groups and also understand how compassion changed over time for those that stayed. We collected quantitative data on demographics, the UCLA Geriatric Attitudes Scale, the Professional Quality of Life Index, the Basic Empathy Scale, the Reasons for Volunteering subscale of the Volunteerism Questionnaire and the 5‐level EQ‐5D. Qualitative data were collected through focus groups/interviews. Overall, 78 volunteers completed surveys and 23 participated in focus groups/interviews. Volunteers that stayed were more likely to be a little older and were a slightly higher proportion male than those who left. They also had significantly less positive attitudes towards older adults, descriptively lower Cognitive Empathy and descriptively higher Secondary Traumatic Stress. Compared to volunteers who left, volunteers retained were more likely to have said they were volunteering for Enhancement or Social purposes; however, these differences were non‐significant. Over time, Compassion Satisfaction decreased with a medium effect size for those that stayed, and Burnout decreased with a small effect size. Volunteers that stayed described more logistical and client‐related aspects of the programme were working well. We recommend that volunteer programmes communicate positive programme impacts that could enhance volunteers' development, communicate any client impacts to volunteers to reinforce volunteers' purposes for volunteering (thus reinforcing that their work is meaningful), and ensure logistical aspects of volunteer role work well. The health behaviours related to chronic diseases experienced by South Asian immigrants are interrelated with their culture and socioeconomic conditions. South Asian immigrants experience a disproportionate burden of chronic disease compared with non‐immigrants Australian‐born general population. The primary aim of this study was to gain an in‐depth understanding of health behaviours and healthcare access in the South Asian immigrant population of Australia. Five focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with South Asian immigrants (n = 29; 18 females) aged 27–50 years in Brisbane, Australia. Separate FGDs were conducted for males and females in the English language. Semi‐structured guided questions related to the perception, barriers and facilitators of health behaviours. Data were analysed with Nvivo‐12 following a thematic analysis. A conceptual model is proposed to provide a summarised understanding of barriers and facilitators of health behaviours in South Asian immigrants. The major reported constraints for participating in physical activity were cultural beliefs, lack of time, work stress and high fees of fitness activities, while parks and peer modelling were mentioned as a strong motivator for walking, cycling and participating in group sports activities. The cultural and religious connections, cost of cigarettes and drink driving penalties were the most mentioned facilitators for a healthy lifestyle. The important factors related to unhealthy eating habits were the traditional cooking methods, social interactions and the high cost of fruits and vegetables. Community perceptions and language barriers were also acknowledged as the main factors for the decrease in accessing health care services. This study illustrates that cultural beliefs, high cost of healthy food and facilities and social circumstances are mainly linked with the health behaviours and healthcare access in South Asian immigrant's lifestyles. Most implementation frameworks note that a central support unit (CSU) is key to successful implementation and scale‐up of evidence‐based interventions (EBIs). However, few studies investigated core functions of CSUs—such as capacity building—to better understand their essential role in implementing EBIs at scale. Therefore, the aims of our study are to (1) describe the role that a CSU plays to build capacity in delivery partner organisations, to enable implementation and scale‐up of a health‐promoting intervention (Choose to Move [CTM]) for older adults, and (2) identify elements within capacity‐building strategies deemed essential to effectively implement CTM in diverse community contexts. CTM is a flexible, scalable, community‐based health‐promoting physical activity (PA) and social connectedness intervention for older adults. In 2018–2020, eight health and social service societies, rural or remote municipalities or community‐based organisations delivered 22 CTM programmes that served 322 older adults. We conducted in‐depth interviews with delivery partners (n = 23), and a focus group with the central support system (n = 4). CSU provided a sounding board to organisations to create buy‐in (adoption) and plan ahead. Essential elements within capacity‐building strategies included: a support unit champion, enhanced delivery partner skills, self‐efficacy and confidence; interactive assistance to answer questions and clarify materials. There is a key role for capacity‐building under the stewardship of the CSU to promote implementation success. Investigating specific elements within capacity‐building strategies that drive implementation success continues to be a relevant question for implementation science researchers, that deserves further attention. Social participation is critical to the health and well‐being of older adults, however, participation often declines with age. Research has identified that personal and environmental factors such as high socioeconomic status and accessible transportation are associated with higher levels of social participation. However, the barriers and facilitators to social participation experienced by older adults receiving community aged care services remains largely unexplored. This qualitative study aimed to generate context‐rich data and identify the barriers and facilitators to effective community care services that can support older adults' participation in the community and contribute to individual well‐being. Semi‐structured focus groups were conducted with 40 community aged care clients and 21 staff members between January to July 2018 and thematic analysis was undertaken. Environmental factors, such as availability and accessibility of transportation services emerged as the most important factors influencing participation. Older age, self‐attitude towards one's own functional ability and limited social networks were important personal factors affecting participation. Proactive aged care services (e.g., engaged staff, tailored activities) were reported to assist with continual engagement in aged care services. In contrast, the type, location and accessibility of the activity, associated costs and limited options for accessible transportation were key barriers to older adults' social participation. Pathways contributing to positive engagement were complex and variable, but personal well‐being and local community resources emerged as important factors encouraging higher social participation. Carers of loved ones with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) often present to Emergency Departments (ED) during acute crisis situations. The initial contact for the carer and consumer in distress is often an emergency nurse. By gaining a greater understanding of carers (18+) perspectives on ED nursing practices when consumers with BPD are requiring crisis support, knowledge about preferred and best practice can be gained. To obtain this knowledge, four semi‐structured focus group interviews were undertaken with a purposive sample of 13 carers through existing carer networks. Transcripts were analysed thematically to identify shared experiences and perspectives across interviews. Four key themes emerged: challenges in accessing crisis support, the need for communication, stigmatising practices, and different levels of care. Findings highlight the ED is viewed as a frontline service which has the capacity to link with another specialist supports when in crisis. Despite this; Communication, confidentiality issues and stigmatising practices continue. The results of this study have implications for nursing practice in the ED, providing important insights that can potentially benefit the carer, consumer and the ED to improve the quality of care offered for people in crisis. Despite an increasing awareness of the impact of the social context of a person on personalised care planning, there is currently no generally accepted classification of social context. As a result, home care professionals have a partial understanding of what social context is and how it affects and can even benefit their work. In this study, we define the main themes and concepts of the social context in the home care setting. The goal in this study is twofold. Initially, we want to offer a multidimensional and practical model of social context, founded on the perspectives of care users and professional caregivers in home care. This model of social context, in turn, will be the foundation for the development of a Social Supplement for the interRAI assessment instruments. We conducted nine focus groups in Flanders between September and November 2017. Fifty‐four people participated. The focus groups followed a semi‐structured format based on themes identified from the literature and three in‐depth interviews with experts. Questions focused on defining the main themes of 'social context' and their subcategories. At the end of each discussion, participants were asked to consider which concept could be suitable and essential for a Social Supplement to the current interRAI instruments. Focus groups were recorded, transcribed and analysed using NVivo. We used investigator and theoretical triangulation to ensure the quality of our analysis, and identified five overarching themes of social context; (a) care and support, (b) physical environment, (c) life and care goals, (d) psychosocial well‐being and (e) civic engagement. These main themes were mentioned throughout the nine focus group discussions, even though a diverse group of stakeholders participated. Older adults frequently turn to care partners for support to remain in their homes for as long as possible. Yet, many evidence‐based home and community programs to support ageing in place do not formally involve care partners. This study sought to understand how to involve care partners in the Community Aging in Place, Advancing Better Living for Elders (CAPABLE) program. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Framework analysis of multiple sources of data, including descriptions from stakeholders (N = 24) and available CAPABLE resources, provided the basis for understanding how to involve care partners in the program. Considerations for involving care partners when initiating, delivering and following the program were generated; namely, providing older adults' choices while screening for the program, defining roles and sharing information in a collaborative manner and reinforcing knowledge and skills training. Embracing these considerations in geriatric practice and research efforts is likely to help care partners' ability to provide assistance, thus enabling older adults to remain in their homes for as long as possible. Providers can use findings to better involve and support care partners in their delivery of programs to older adults. For the next 30 years, population aging will impact many facets of our society. Of specific concern is future human resources in the aging sector and related health fields. Every year, high school students make decisions related to their future careers, but few express interests in a career in aging. The goal of this study was to explore high school students' interest in and perspectives of a career in the field of aging. The specific objectives of the study were to identify high school students' perspectives of older adults, explore their level of interest in an aging‐related career and understand the reasons for their level of interest for a career in aging. In this qualitative descriptive study, 41 French‐speaking students in Grades 10 and 11 from an eastern Canadian province participated in a total of five focus group discussions where an educational video complemented the semi‐structured interviews. Content analysis produced four common themes: perspectives of aging and older adults, exposure to aging in school, reasons for disinterest and increasing awareness and interest. Results indicate a lack of aging content or intergenerational activities in schools, whereas students made suggestions for better integration of aging content in the school curriculum. Future research with school guidance counsellors or educators would be beneficial in understanding aging content integration and student exposure to aging. Study limitations are also presented. Up to 75% of UK care home residents may lack the mental capacity to make certain decisions (Wade, Clinical Rehabilitation, 2019, 33, 1561–1570). Care home staff need evidence‐based tools to help them assess residents' mental capacity and provide decision‐making support (NICE, Decision‐making and mental capacity NICE guideline NG108, 2018). The Mental Capacity Assessment Support Toolkit (MCAST) was designed to support multidisciplinary healthcare staff to prepare, complete and document legally compliant mental capacity assessments. MCAST has not yet been trialled in care homes. This study used a descriptive qualitative design to: (a) understand the current challenges faced by care home staff when supporting residents to make decisions and participate in mental capacity assessments; (b) explore staff members' support needs in this context and (c) to identify if and how the toolkit could be adapted for use in care homes. A purposive sample of 29 staff working as managers (n = 18), nurses (n = 7) and care assistants (n = 4) across five care homes in North West England participated in five semi‐structured focus groups between May and July 2019. Data from the focus group transcripts were analysed thematically (Braun & Clarke, Qualitative Research in Psychology, 2006, 3, 77–101). Five main themes were identified: (a) involvement of residents in decision‐making; (b) approaches to mental capacity assessment; (c) working with residents with communication difficulties; (d) feelings about practice and (e) responses to MCAST. Participants appeared competent and confident about supporting decision‐making and assessing capacity, but recognised the complexity of this area of practice, and identified a need for further support. They reported a range of challenges, including accessing support from speech and language therapists for residents with communication needs. They responded positively to the toolkit and were keen to use it in practice. This study suggests that care home staff would benefit from, and welcome, support to develop their practice. Partnering with consumers and patients and the community and public is a research and healthcare improvement imperative. Consumer and community involvement (CCI) requires behaviour change at the individual (researcher, health professional, manager), organisational (health service, university, medical research institute) and system level (funding policies, collaboration between organisations). To understand the barriers and enablers to meaningful CCI, a qualitative descriptive study was undertaken with researchers, health professionals, representatives from consumer organisations, and health services and ethics committees in Melbourne, Australia. Twenty‐eight semi‐structured interviews and one focus group were conducted in May–August 2019. Ethics approval was obtained. Thematic analysis was guided by the Capability, Opportunity and Motivation and Behaviour model (COM‐B). Training of researchers and health professionals in CCI, benefits and systems and processes to undertake CCI, alongside incorporating CCI as a requirement for funding were identified as enablers. Lack of time and resources for CCI, challenges in finding consumers for projects and a perceived lack of evidence of the impact of CCI were barriers. These identified barriers and enablers will inform strategies to build the capacity of CCI at the individual, organisation and system level within the Australian Health Research Alliance. Medication use is an important risk factor for falls. Community pharmacists should therefore organise fall prevention care; however, little is known about patients' expectations of such services. This qualitative study aims to explore the expectations of community‐dwelling older patients regarding fall prevention services provided by community pharmacies. Telephone intakes, followed by three focus groups, were conducted with 17 patients, who were aged ≥75 years, used at least one fall risk‐increasing drug (FRID) and were registered at a community pharmacy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Some time of the focus groups was spent on playing a game involving knowledge questions and activities to stimulate discussion of topics related to falling. Data were collected between January 2020 and April 2020, and all focus groups were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. The precaution adoption process model (PAPM) was applied during data analysis. Patients who had already experienced a fall more often mentioned that they took precautions to prevent falling. In general, patients were unaware that their medication use could increase their fall risk. Therefore, they did not expect pharmacists to play a role in fall prevention. However, many patients were interested in deprescribing. Patients also wanted to be informed about which medication could increase fall risk. In conclusion, although patients initially did not see a role for pharmacists in fall prevention, their perception changed when they were informed about the potential fall risk‐increasing effects of some medications. Patients expected pharmacists to focus on drug‐related interventions to reduce fall risk, such as deprescribing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
