A brief description of the hardware and software for the digital flight control computers for the NASA 737 airplane is given. Software modules include the basic executive, scheduler, redundancy management, software signal selection, system test, mode logic, pitch axis flight control program and the lateral axis flight control program. A more detailed description of the software development effort is given for the digital flight control software. The software development tasks discussed are: software requirements, development, documentation, control, lab evaluation and formal lab tests. The software development costs are identified and conclusions are drawn concerning the software development effort required to support digital flight control for commercial jet transport applications.

Operational fly-by-wire (FBW) systems, w hether analog or digital, are today mostly quadruplex. The introduction of digital computers into FBW systems presents the possibility of reducing the redundancy level from quadruplex to triplex (even, in some cases, duplex) with attendant system benefits: reduction in maintainability, size, weight, power, and cost. Quantitative data is introduced to show the failure coverage needed to achieve acceptable system reliability. Redundancy management techniques are presented, their failure coverage d etermined, and an analytical link established between these techniques and system reliability. The conclusion is that a triplex system is both desirable and achievable.

This report contains a complete description of a learning control system designed for the F8-DFBW aircraft. The system is parameter-adaptive with the additional feature that it 'learns' the variation of the control system gains needed over the flight envelope. It, thus, generates and modifies its gain schedule when suitable data are available. The report emphasizes the novel learning features of the system: the forms of representation of the flight envelope and the process by which identified parameters are used to modify the gain schedule. It contains data taken during piloted real-time 6 degree-of-freedom simulations that were used to develop and evaluate the system.

NASA is currently conducting flight tests of a remotely piloted subscale advanced fighter configuration as part of the Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology (HiMAT) program. This paper describes the initial development, user modification, and flight test experience of a back-up control system (BCS) contained within one of two onboard microprocessors. The development of the BCS proceeded in two distinct steps: the initial contractor development of control laws and logic to satisfy BCS design objectives, and user modifications required to satisfy operational requirements. A brief resume of flight qualification procedures and pilot comments is presented.

The NASA Dryden Flight Research Facility is conducting flight tests of two remotely piloted, subscale, advanced fighter configurations; the tests are part of the Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology (HiMAT) project. Closed-loop primary flight control is performed from a ground-based cockpit and digital computer in conjunction with an up/down telemetry link. A significant feature of these vehicles is an on-board, digitally active, backup control system designed to recover the vehicle in the event of a transfer from primary control. Automatic transfers occur upon certain critical ground or airborne system malfunctions. Control modes are provided that enable a ground or airborne controller to guide the vehicle to a safe landing. This paper describes the features, operational development, and flight evaluation of the HiMAT backup flight control system.

Despite the application of sophisticated design methodology, newly introduced aircraft continue to suffer from basic flying qualities deficiencies. Two recent meetings, the DOD/NASA Workshop on Highly Augmented Aircraft Criteria and the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center/Air Force Flight Test Center/AIAA Pilot Induced Oscillation Workshop, addressed this problem. An overview of these meetings is provided from the point of view of the relationship between flying qualities criteria and flight control system design. Among the items discussed are flying qualities criteria development, the role of simulation, and communication between flying qualities specialists and control system designers.

The design and operation of the cooperative advanced digital research experiment (CADRE) to develop nonlinear pitch flight control algorithms is described, and the results of an in-flight evaluation using the F-8C digital fly-by-wire (DFBW) research aircraft are presented. The CADRE controller is described, including the initial filter, linear command prefilter, nonlinear command prefilter, and gain scheduling. The variable-integral control-to-optimize response of the controller is considered, and CADRE parameter combinations are addressed. The remotely-augmented-vehicle interface used in the DFBW aircraft experiment is discussed. The distanct-tracking and close-formation tracking evaluation tasks for the aircraft are described along with evaluation configurations, and the test results are presented and discussed. The latter indicate that a nonlinear adaptive controller is a feasible control system technique for the fighter tracking task.

The paper describes the development and flight testing of automatic landing flare laws with improved longitudinal touchdown dispersion. The major sources of touchdown dispersion in current control laws and design objectives of this equipment are discussed. A ground-speed adaptive sink-rate control law and a specified flare trajectory control law were selected for development; the performance of resulting flare laws was evaluated by simulations and flight testing on the NASA TCV B-737 aircraft. These flare laws showed substantial improvement in longitudinal touchdown dispersion, when compared to a more conventional flare law used previously.

Linear optimal quadratic control theory is applied to a low wing-loading STOL aircraft for ride quality and flight path following. Design criteria include minimum rms response to wind turbulence and desired transient response characteristics. Design techniques include proper choosing of design versus evaluation models, choosing appropriate performance index responses, and use of classical evaluation techniques. Results are obtained through a combination of frequency response shaping and gust observation. Effects of control rate and authority saturation are examined with a new rapid calculation of random input describing functions. Parameter sensitivity is also evaluated using a Liapunov type matrix equation.

Future aircraft with highly sophisticated controls are likely to have multiple interdependent failure modes which will be difficult for the pilot to recognize. Such failures may lead to unanticipated sequences of events from which the pilot cannot intuitively recover. Advances in the state-of-the-art in failure detection, failure identification, and control system technology suggest it may be feasible to detect and identify potentially catastrophic failures in flight controls and to restructure the controls in real time to execute a safe landing. Two accidents are reviewed, one in which the pilot successfully restructured the controls and one in which he did not, but for which a solution existed. The problem requirements and potential theoretical techniques which apply are also discussed.

NASA is conducting a flight control research program in digital fly-by-wire technology using a modified F-8C aircraft. The first phase of this program used Apollo hardware to demonstrate the practicality of digital fly-by-wire in an actual test vehicle. For the second phase, conventional aircraft sensors and a large floating point digital computer are being utilized to test advanced control laws and redundancy concepts. As part of NASA's research in digital fly-by-wire technology, Honeywell developed digital adaptive flight control laws for flight test in the F-8C. Adaptation of the control laws was to be based on information sensed from conventional aircraft sensors excluding air data. The control laws were constrained to use only existing elevator, rudder, and ailerons as control effectors, each powered by existing actuators. Three adaptive control laws were successfully designed using maximum likelihood estimation, a Liapunov stable model tracker and a self-excited limit cycle concept. The maximum likelihood estimation design was selected as the most promising because of its capability to identify more than surface effectiveness parameters. The adaptive concepts, the control laws and comparisons of predicted performance are described.

This paper presents results of flight control transfer function vibration testing of the Space Shuttle vehicle conducted at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. The purpose of this testing was to verify the response of flight control accelerometers and rate gyroscopes to vibratory structural motion induced by rocket thrust control forces. This transmissibility is exceptionally important to the Shuttle vehicle because it employs accelerometers for control purposes to alleviate aerodynamic loads during a portion of flight, and accelerometers are particularly sensitive to vibratory motion. Test results are compared with theoretical calculations and a limit criterion. These comparisons demonstrate the adequacy of the flight control design or provide a basis for modifying control system characteristics to ensure that response to flexural motion is inconsequential.

A research program on STOL operating systems is underway at the Ames Research Center. One investigation is concerned with design, analysis, and flight test of promising four-dimensional RNAV systems. One promising system generates a capture flight path from the present aircraft position to a waypoint on a selected fixed STOL approach route. It predicts arrival time at the runway and controls time and position along the path. The system was flight tested using a digital avionics system on a Convair 340 and on an experimental powered-lift STOL airplane. Flight tests in the flight director mode show that the pilot can choose and change the desired time of arrival, and meet this time within a few seconds, in spite of navigation errors and varying winds. Initial tests of the automatic mode using a flight simulator and the NASA Augmentor Wing Jet STOL Research Aircraft (AWJSRA) show that good time control was achieved at the cost of excess throttle activity. This fault was later corrected.

A triplex digital fly-by-wire flight control system was developed and then installed in a NASA F-8C aircraft to provide fail-operative, full authority control. Hardware and software redundancy management techniques were designed to detect and identify failures in the system. Control functions typical of those projected for future actively controlled vehicles were implemented. This paper describes the principal design features of the system, the implementation of computer, sensor, and actuator redundancy management, and the ground test results. An automated test program to verify sensor redundancy management software is also described.

The suitability of existing and proposed flying quality and flight control system criteria for application to the space shuttle orbiter during atmospheric flight phases was assessed. An orbiter experiment for flying qualities and flight control system design criteria is discussed. Orbiter longitudinal and lateral-directional flying characteristics, flight control system lag and time delay considerations, and flight control manipulator characteristics are included. Data obtained from conventional aircraft may be inappropriate for application to the shuttle orbiter.

An analysis technique has been developed to estimate the reliability of a very complex, safety-critical system by constructing a diagram of the reliability equations for the total system. This diagram has many of the characteristics of a fault-tree or success-path diagram, but is much easier to construct for complex redundant systems. The diagram provides insight into system failure characteristics and identifies the most likely failure modes. A computer program aids in the construction of the diagram and the computation of reliability. Analysis of the NASA F-8 Digital Fly-by-Wire Flight Control System is used to illustrate the technique.

The distinctive feature of a tiltrotor aircraft is that the pilot can change the rotor mast angles to go from a helicopter configuration for take-off and landing to an airplane configuration for high cruise speeds and vice-versa. An approach path for such an aircraft is proposed and the logic required to fly along this path in the presence of wind is determined. The main contribution of this work is an efficient and, to my knowledge, new method for generating the nominal state and control histories taking into account an estimate of the mean wind velocity and direction. The method requires the solution of algebraic (mostly linear) equations to generate a "universal nominal", and feedforward and feedback gains. Then, in flight the additional state and control corrections due to deviation in descent rate, deceleration, and flight in a steady wind are obtained by multiplying simple precalculated functions of time by the descent rate, deceleration or sine and cosine components of the mean wind vector. Simulations of approach flights for different wind conditions, assuming perfect state information in the feedback signal, indicated satisfactory performance.

The Neal-Smith criterion is examined for possible applications in the evaluation of augmented fighter aircraft flying qualities. Longitudinal and lateral flying qualities are addressed. Based on the application of several longitudinal flying qualities data bases, revisions are proposed to the original criterion. Examples are given which show the revised criterion to be a good discriminator of pitch flying qualities. Initial results of lateral flying qualities evaluation through application of the Neal-Smith criterion are poor. Lateral aircraft configurations whose flying qualities are degraded by roll ratcheting effects map into the Level 1 region of the criterion. A third dimension of the criterion for flying qualities specification is evident. Additional criteria are proposed to incorporate this dimension into the criterion structure for flying qualities analysis.

This paper presents several different methods that can be used to determine the aircraft orientation (attitude) without direct measurement. The methods combine state estimation techniques with measurements from solid state pressure sensors, accelerometers, and magnetometers to determine the aircraft state. The paper demonstrates how the estimation algorithms were validated and compared using flight test data, and it presents results of performance sensitivity analyses of sensor error, modeling inaccuracies, and wind disturbance effects on the attitude estimation errors. If implemented, the methods presented could make it possible to eliminate directional and vertical gyros and to change from many isolated sensors to an integrated, small, reliable sensing package for determining the aircraft state.

This paper discusses the design and initial flight tests of the first digital fly-by-wire system to be flown in an aircraft. The system, which used components from the Apollo guidance system, was installed in an F-8 aircraft. A lunar module guidance computer is the central element in the three-axis, single-channel, multimode, digital, primary control system. An electrohydraulic triplex system providing unaugmented control of the F-8 aircraft is the only backup to the digital system. Emphasis is placed on the digital system in its role as a control augmentor, a logic processor, and a failure detector. A sampled-data design synthesis example is included to demonstrate the role of various analytical and simulation methods. The use of a digital system to implement conventional control laws was shown to be practical for flight. Logic functions coded as an integral part of the control laws were found to be advantageous. Verification of software required an extensive effort, but confidence in the software was achieved. Initial flight results showed highly successful system operation, although quantization of pilot's stick and trim were areas of minor concern from the piloting standpoint.
