Intact soil columns can bridge the gap between field studies and idealized laboratory investigations of flow and transport in macropores and fractured media. However, the value of intact column studies is often hampered by shortcomings such as lack of column intactness, small column size, and column rim flow, which can cause serious artifacts and hamper system understanding. The flexible‐wall pressurized large undisturbed column (LUC) method overcomes these limitations and is a valuable approach to analyze fluid flow and solute transport in macroporous and fractured geological formations. The method investigates subsurface processes in complex media, mimicking in situ conditions and facilitating the control of system boundary conditions including effective stress. In recent years, considerable experience has been gained through different applications of the LUC approach. Modeling tools have also been developed for a detailed interpretation of flow and transport processes in LUC systems. This paper describes the steps of the LUC method from column excavation in the field to experimental setup in the laboratory. The description encompasses the key features of the sampling of LUCs in field excavations, the laboratory setup, the procedure for hydraulic and transport experiments, as well as practical challenges and potential issues during operation of an LUC system. Application examples with a fully three‐dimensional numerical model of LUC tracer experiments are also presented to illustrate the quantitative interpretation of transport processes in macroporous clayey tills. This study describes a new technique for measuring the head profile in a geologic formation. The technique provides rapid, low cost information on the depth of water-producing zones and aquitards in heterogeneous aquifers, yielding estimates of hydraulic heads in each zone while identifying any potential for cross contamination between zones. The measurements can be performed in a typical borehole in just a few hours. The procedure uses both the continuous transmissivity profile obtained by the installation (eversion) of a flexible borehole liner into an open borehole and the subsequent removal (inversion) of the same liner from the borehole. The method is possible because of the continuous transmissivity profile ( T profile described by Keller et al. 2014) obtained by measuring the rate of liner eversion under a constant driving head. The hydraulic heads of producing zones are measured using the reverse head profile ( RHP) method (patent no. 9,008,971) based on a stepwise inversion of the borehole liner. As each interval of the borehole is uncovered by inversion of the liner, the head beneath the liner is allowed to equilibrate to a steady-state value. The individual hydraulic heads contributing to each measurement are calculated using the measured transmissivity for each zone. Application of the RHP method to a sedimentary bedrock borehole in New Jersey verified that it reproduced the head distribution obtained the same day in the same borehole instrumented with a multilevel sampling system. In the great majority of slug tests performed in wells fully penetrating confined geologic formations, and for over-damped conditions, the response data are evaluated with the transient-flow model of Cooper et al. (1967) when the radial hydraulic conductivity Kr and the coefficient of specific storage Ss are to be estimated. That particular analytical solution, however, is computationally involved and awkward to use. Thus, groundwater professionals often use a few pre-prepared type-curves to fit the data by a rough matching procedure, visually or computationally. On the other hand, the method of Hvorslev (1951), which assumes the flow to be quasi-steady, is much simpler but yields only Kr estimates. In this work, we develop a complete quasi-steady flow model that includes a storage balance inside the aquifer and allows estimating Kr and Ss simultaneously, through matching of the well response data to a type-curve. The new model approximates the model of Cooper et al. closely and has the practical advantage that its solution type-curves are generated easily using an electronic spreadsheet, so that the optimal fit of data by a type-curve can be readily automated. The line-fitting methods such as the Hvorslev method and the Bouwer and Rice method provide a rapid and simple means to analyze slug test data for estimating in situ hydraulic conductivity ( k) of geologic materials. However, when analyzing a slug test in a relatively compressible geologic formation, these conventional methods may have difficulties fitting a straight line to the semilogarithmic plot of the test data. Data from relatively compressible geologic formations frequently show a concave-upward curvature because of the effect of the compressibility or specific storage ( Ss). To take into account the compressibility of geologic formations, a modified line-fitting method is introduced, which expands on Chirlin’s (1989) approach to the case of a partially penetrating well with the basic-time-lag fitting method. A case study for a compressible till is made to verify the proposed method by comparing the results from the proposed methods with those obtained using a type-curve method (Kansas Geological Survey method [ Hyder et al. 1994 ]). Longitudinal dispersivity (α) data were compiled from 109 different authors for different types of geological media. The data were subdivided into different subsets. Dispersivity values for consolidated media were subdivided as basalts, granites, sandstones, and carbonate rocks, while unconsolidated sediments were subdivided into three reliability classes. The data sets provided here may provide ground water practitioners a preliminary guide to estimate dispersivity values at various scales and to guide and verify theories on scaling behavior. Based on the data set presented here, the relationship that empirically best described the dispersivity data in regard to scale of measurement was in the form of a power law. The scaling exponent for consolidated and unconsolidated geological media varied between 0.40 and 0.92, and 0.44 and 0.94, respectively. Higher reliability subsets of data for the unconsolidated sediments and more frequently tested rock formations indicate that the scaling exponent is at the lower end of the observed range, close to 0.5. No significant difference in scaling exponent was found among different media, and no clear evidence exists for the presence of an upper bound or asymptotic behavior on the relationship for any of the analyzed media.
