Russian and foreign studies on the use of ash-slag wastes from thermal power plants (TPP) as raw material components in the production of foam glass and glass-ceramic foam materials are reviewed. It is shown that in a number of cases the use of waste improves the properties of the materials.

Fundamental approaches to a mathematical description of the liquidus surface in silicate systems are proposed, which can be used in developing software for operational control of the process parameters in silicate production.

The possibilities of obtaining construction ceramic based on tailings from the enrichment of vermiculite and apatite-nepheline ores are investigated. Ceramic mixes which have promise for manufacturing facing tiles as well as solid and hollow brick with improved physical – mechanical properties are proposed.

A study is undertaken into the solubility of apatite in silicate melts (albite—diopside, orthoclase—diopside, and quartz—diopside) at 1400°C. It is shown that the factors affecting the solubility include not only the silica content of the melt, but also the cation composition: in sodium-rich melts the solubility of apatite is substantially higher than in similar potassium-containing melts. These findings can used in designing opacified glasses.

The paper sums up a study into the acid and alkali resistance of glasses in the systems albite—diopside, orthoclase—diopside, and quartz—diopside, synthesized from Kola Peninsula minerals. In particular, variations in this property were investigated in relation to the concentration of the constituents in the glasses. The optimal proportions of the constituents are given.
