It is shown that the translucence of a substrate strongly influences light transmission by glass articles modified by sol-gel coatings. In contrast to glass, where light scattering is proportional to the refractive index, an inverse proportionality has been found in the films studied, which can be explained by the influence of porosity on the decrease of the refractive index of the coating. It is found that the technological conditions for the formation of self-purifying coating depend on the sintering interval of the vitreous phase and its dispersion. The most porous coating with the maximum effect of self-purification (96 – 98%) was obtained on introducing 12 – 14 parts by weight of sodium silicate solution into the coating slip. The effect of the duration of treatment of the surface of soda-lime glass in potassium and lead nitrate melts at a temperature of 460°C on the chemical and mechanical strength is investigated. It is demonstrated that the formation of a crystalline lead-silicate coating in this treatment increases the alkali resistance threefold and the mechanical strength of glass twofold.
