Objectives: Although relationships between empathy and burnout have been reported, it remains unclear whether empathy should be considered as a predictive or a protective factor. A multidimensional approach towards empathy was selected to determine whether cognitive and emotional aspects might differently contribute to the burnout (first study). In a second study, we aimed at investigating the effect of empathy-based training program on empathic skills and burnout., Methods: The first survey was conducted among 124 nursing staff from 10 geriatric residential facilities. They filled out (i) the Maslach burnout inventory (assessing emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment); (ii) two empathy questionnaires assessing both cognitive (perspective-taking, i.e. the tendency to adopt another person's point of view) and emotional empathy (compassionate care, i.e. the propensity to take patients' feelings into account; and personal distress, i.e. feelings of discomfort in relationships). In the second study, questionnaires were filled out by 41 caregivers before and after an empathy-based training program (Validation®)., Results: results showed that higher personal distress predicted higher burnout scores while higher compassionate care predicted lower emotional exhaustion and higher perspective-taking predicted lower depersonalization as well as higher accomplishment. Results from the second study showed that personal distress decreased after the Validation training and nursing staffs reported lower depersonalization and higher accomplishment., Conclusion: The first study suggests that, in predicting the decrease of burnout symptomatology, perspective-taking and the propensity for compassionate care should be considered as protective factors, whereas personal distress can be considered as a predictive factor. Moreover, empathy-based training programs such as Validation® could contribute to the prevention of burnout by decreasing signs of personal distress. The nature of this component (empathy or sympathy) is discussed.

Episodic memory is the memory of personally lived events located in time and space, it shapes our identity and allows us to project ourselves into the past and the future. This form of memory is vulnerable to the effects of age and its alteration, hindering the autonomy of the subjects, can predict the evolution towards neurodegenerative disorders. Hence, a better understanding of this type of memory is a priority in the field of public health. Actually, traditional neuropsychological tools are often decontextualized, using simplistic situations that did not require the mobilization of all the characteristics of episodic memory, thus they just offer a partial measure of this complex mnemonic capacity. Nowadays, the virtual reality (VR) is a tool allowing the immersion of subjects in simulations of real situations, rich in spatial and temporal naturalistic contexts. Due to its many characteristics, the VR allows to solve several limitations of the traditional tests. The purpose of this review is to expose studies that investigated episodic memory in normal and Alzheimer's disease using VR in order to address its relevance as a new tool in the future practice of neuropsychology of aging.

The ability to project the self forward in time to pre-experience personal events is referred to as episodic future thinking. Different theories have been proposed to try to explain the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying episodic future thinking. In this paper we focus on studies concerning the episodic prospection capacity in cognitive aging and in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and semantic dementia. Older adults usually produce fewer episodic details than young adults when recalling past events and when imagining future events. Patients with early to moderate Alzheimer's disease have impaired capacity in the generation of episodic details for retrieved past events and imagined future events. Similarly patients with early to moderate semantic dementia have difficulties in episodic future thinking whereas they succeed to retrieve episodic past events. These patterns are discussed with regard to the respective role of the episodic and personal semantic representations in future personal thoughts as a function of temporal distance by purposing a new neurocognitive model (TEDIFT).

There are no longer doubts about the existence of gender's differences in cognition, only their origin is still controversial. The literature provides evidence of differences in cognitive performance and brain activation patterns and links these differences in men and women with biological, social and psychological measures. To date, the favored hypothesis explaining these differences is the cognitive style hypothesis according to which women and men would favor different strategies while resolving some tasks. Some of these tasks are autobiographical memory tasks, which are also the most sensitive to the effects of age but very few studies had explored the impact of aging on the differences in cognition between men and women. We discuss the importance of such studies about the gender's differences in aging. A better understanding of gender differences in cognition in pathological aging as in health would provide the opportunity to offer a more personalized care.

Given the limitations of pharmacological treatments in Alzheimer's disease, many non-drug therapies have emerged in recent decades and are often offered in complement of pharmacological treatments. The cognitive rehabilitation interventions focused on memory are usual in Alzheimer's disease. Memory deficits are prominent from the early stages of the disease and cause detriment to patient autonomy in daily life. In particular, problems of identity and autobiographical memory, although still often overlooked in the patients' general neuropsychological profile, appear right away. Because of their more insidious negative influence, specific treatments are still underdeveloped. Rehabilitation of autobiographical memory is complex because it requires taking into account its multiple components, both semantic and episodic, but also understanding its links with personal identity. Thus, this article provides an overview of existing cognitive rehabilitation interventions of anterograde and retrograde autobiographical memory in Alzheimer's disease. We specify the contribution of new technologies to improve the consolidation of recent events memory and of a rehabilitation program of autobiographical memory - REMau -, derived from the TEMPau task, which takes into account the constructive nature of episodic memories via the personal semantic through different periods of life. The main aim is to examine what are the objectives, benefits and limitations of these interventions and to estimate how they can meet the more general problem of deficiency in personal identity. As identity is constructed on the basis of past experience, but is modulated by new experiences, our current challenge is to associate combined treatments of anterograde and retrograde memory based on the interaction between autobiographical memory and the self.

Episodic memory deficits are almost always the first cognitive impairment in Alzheimer disease (AD). AD is also characterized by a loss of self-awareness. The aim of this article is to give an interpretation of AD patients' episodic impairments through the study of the relationship between memory and the self. Using the Remember/Know paradigm associated with the self-reference effect and emotional valence, we showed that this relationship may be impaired in AD. On the one hand, this could explain AD patients' difficulty accessing autonoetic consciousness, that is to say mentally bring back events of the past. On the other hand, the difficulty to precisely relieve previous events may be in turn at the root of AD patients' loss of self-awareness, namely anosognosia. Thus, based on the previous studies in the field of self-referential processing and on our findings, we proposed that the combination of an emotion analysis and a cognitive approach of AD patients' episodic memory impairments is an interesting way to better understand the complete functioning of AD patients.

This research investigates the role of different memory components in the age-related decline of new route learning. Few studies have considered real route learning, for which the situation can be more complex, and the richness greater than with simple mazes. In this experiment, the memory of a route in a real city has been assessed considering visual scene recognition, directions recognition, and temporal order memorization. Thirty young adults (m=25 years old) and 30 older adults (m=70 years old) have watched the video of the route twice before performing the three recognition tasks. Various cognitive abilities (episodic memory, verbal and visuo-spatial working memory, short-term binding, inhibition, flexibility, and mental rotation ability) have then been assessed through different neuropsychological tests. The results demonstrate that older adults have poorer performance than younger in the three route learning tasks: visual scene recognition task, direction recognition task, and temporal order recognition task. Moreover, mediation analyses indicate that episodic memory performance partly explains the effect of aging on visual scene recognition, while working memory capacity performance (measured with Corsi's block test, digit span test, and multimodal span test) partly explains the effect of aging on direction recognition. Spatial memory involved in real navigation and route learning is thus impaired in normal aging, which is partly due to the decline of episodic and working memory components.

According to Tulving, episodic memory allows humans to travel mentally through subjective time into either the past or the future, this ability being at the origin of adaptation, organization and planning of future behavior. The main aim of this review is to present a state of art of episodic mental time travel and a lifespan perspective from children to elderly people. We examine the numerous similarities between remembering the past and envisioning the future which have been highlighted in cognitive, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological studies. We also present studies that have given evidence that remembering the past and imagining the future differ somewhat. We focus on demonstrating that hippocampal dysfunction is associated with disturbances in the recall of episodic autobiographical details in past memories, but also in the imagining of episodic detailed future events. More specifically, we discuss that the future seems to involve higher semantic processes mediated by the inferior frontal and lateral temporal gyri. We propose that the study of mental travel in personal time could be undertaken in line with the distinction between the memory of (episodic) experiences and (semantic) personal knowledge of one's life, which constitutes a major part of the self and constraints what we have been, what we are now, and what we might yet become.
