The observation of a large anomaly in the isotopic composition of Mg in a Ca-Al rich chondrule from the Allende meteorite is discussed. A strong correlation is found in this chondrule between the Mg-26 excess and the Al/Mg ratio. The most plausible cause of the anomaly is attributed to the in situ decay of now extinct Al-26. However, the general pattern of Mg isotopic anomalies is not yet shown to be fully consistent with the Al-26 hypothesis, since an apparently negative Mg-26 anomaly is obtained which cannot be explained by Al-26. A large natural fractionation effect is observed for Mg isotopes. The resolution of the O anomaly and its relation with Mg effects require further investigation.

A simple probabilistic model was constructed for the average value of a cosmogenic nuclide as a function of depth in a regolith. An arbitrary function was chosen for the size distribution of craters. The resulting integro-differential equation was found to reduce in limiting cases to the marching equation with a characteristic residence time and to the diffusion equation. The regolith diffusion constant is shown to be a simple integral of the cratering rate weighted by geometrical terms. This formal treatment provides a direct and general connection between cosmogenic nuclides and cratering rates and crater population in a simple analytical form. The validity of this model remains to be tested.

The isotopic composition and concentration of Ag and the concentration of Pd have been determined in the Santa Clara and Pinon iron meteorites. It is shown that these meteorites contain isotopically anomalous Ag with an excess of Ag-107 relative to normal Ag, confirming earlier findings. Using an improved procedure for cleaning the sample surface from terrestrial Ag, a new concentration of 1.4 x 10 to the 11th atoms of Ag-109/g meteorite is established which is an order of magnitude below the levels found earlier. As a result ratios of Ag-107/Ag-109 were found which are enriched in Ag-107 by 60 percent to 160 percent. The existence of an excess Ag-107 in these two meteorites, which have high Pd-108/Ag-109 ratios of about 7 x 10 to the 4th is established.

The U-238/U-235 ratios for nine bulk chondritic meteorites and a terrestrial basalt were measured. The total range in U-238/U-235 determined for both total meteorites and for acid leaches was from 137.2 terrestrial U. The typical errors in a single determination are plus or minus 6 per thousand (2 sigma m) for a 2 ng U sample from a chondrite. Taking the extreme values of delta U-235 for each measurement the maximum amount of excess U-235 that can be allowed to be present ranges from 200 million to 2 billion atoms per gram of bulk meteorite. These results do not support the claims of variations in U-238/U-235 at the percentage levels or number of excess U-235 atoms in some of the same meteorites as reported by several other previous workers.

Measurements of the concentration and isotopic composition of Ag and Pd in the Santa Clara iron meteorite suggest that in situ decay of Pd-107 occurred in the meteorite or its parent body. The initial solar ratio of Pd-107/Pd-110 is estimated from the observed ratio of excess Ag-107/Pd-110, and the value of the Pd ratio is incompatible with an interval of approximately 100,000,000 years between the end of nucleosynthesis and the formation of planetary objects but is compatible with a later injection of material. The inferred existence of Pd-107 and Al-26 indicates that the late injection included freshly synthesized material of both intermediate and low atomic weight on a similar time scale. The significance of the Pd-107/Ag-107 chronometer is considered.

The Mg isotopic composition of major and minor mineral phases in the Allende inclusion C1 is reported. The results are analyzed in order to establish whether the Mg isotopic composition is the same in different phases and whether Al-26 is present in a sample which exhibited fractionation and unknown nuclear (FUN) effects on other elements. It is found that a small Mg-26 excess exists in C1 and is correlated with the Al-27/Mg-24 ratio, indicating that Al-26 was present in C1 together with the more general nuclear anomalies. The results also reveal that isotopic homogeneity of Mg in Mg-rich phases in C1 is evident in both bulk samples and single microscopic crystals.

Large isotopic fractionation effects in magnesium were observed in three Allende inclusions. Two of the samples show a correlation between Mg and O isotopic anomalies and indicate possible nuclear effects in Mg.

Continental flood basalts and mid-ocean ridge (MOR) tholeiitic basalts have distinctly different Nd-143/Nd-144 which may permit a priori distinction between continental and oceanic igneous rocks. Initial Nd-143/Nd-144 of continental igneous rocks through time fall on a Sm/Nd evolution curve with chondritic REE abundance ratio. These observations indicate that many continental igneous rocks are derived from a reservoir with chondritic REE pattern which may represent primary material remaining since the formation of the earth. Oceanic igneous rocks are derived from a different ancient reservoir which has Sm/Nd higher than chondritic. Initial Nd-143/Nd-144 and Sr-87/Sr-86 in young basalts from both oceans and continents show a strong correlation suggesting that Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr fractionation events in the mantle may be correlative and caused by the same process. From this correlation Rb/Sr for the earth is inferred to be 0.029.
