The coastDat datasets were produced to give a consistent and homogeneous database mainly for assessing weather statistics and climate changes for the recent decades, e.g., in frequencies of extremes for Europe, especially in data sparse regions. The atmospheric parts of these datasets are regional climate reconstructions for the entire European continent, including the Baltic Sea and North Sea and parts of the Atlantic. The simulations were conducted with the regional climate model COSMO-CLM (CCLM). CoastDat2 (Geyer 2014) covers the period 1948-2017 with a horizontal grid size of 0.22 degree in rotated coordinates, and global reanalysis data of NCEP1 were used as forcing and for the application of spectral nudging. CoastDat3 covers the period 1979-2016 with a horizontal grid size of 0.11 degree in rotated coordinates, and global reanalysis data of ERA-Interim were used as forcing and for the application of spectral nudging.In order to also allow a consistent assessment of hydrological changes, we extended these datasets with high resolution river discharge. The discharge was simulated with the recently developed 5 Min. version of the Hydrological discharge (HD) model (Hagemann et al., submitted). Note that for the development of this HD model version, no river specific parameter adjustments were conducted so that the HD model is generally applicable for climate change studies and over ungauged catchments. River flooding is a common hazard, causing billions of dollars in annual losses. The impacts of floods are shaped by the spatial scale over which different rivers flood simultaneously. We use flood data from several thousand European rivers to demonstrate that the flood synchrony scale – the distance over which multiple rivers flood near-synchronously – far exceeds the size of individual drainage basins, and varies regionally by more than an order of magnitude. We also show that flood synchrony scales have grown by about 50% over the period 1960-2010, and that years with spatially extensive floods tend to follow one another. These findings reveal that flood risks are correlated well beyond the individual drainage basins for which flood hazards are typically assessed and managed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With an increasing network of atmospheric stations that produce a constant data stream, top-down inverse transport modelling of GHGs in a quasi-operational way becomes feasible. The CarboScope regional inversion system embeds the regional inversion, within a global inversion using the two-step approach. The regional inversion consist of mesoscale transport from STILT, prior fluxes from the diagnostic VPRM biosphere model, and anthropogenic emissions from a combination of EDGAR v4.3 with the annually updated BP statistic report.The protocol of the EUROCOM inversion intercomparison project was applied, which used observations from the decade period 2006-2015 for 33 stations. The domain covers most of Europe (33 – 73N, 15W – 35E) with a spatial resolution of 0.25 degree for fluxes and 0.5 degree for flux corrections inferred by the inversion. With the launch of the operational phase of ICOS RI (Integrated Carbon Observation System Research Infrastructure) for the last years more observations are avaiabe also on new ICOS atmospheric sites. Additional to the decade 2006-2015 used in the EUROCOM protocol we extend the NEE inversion over Europe for the years 2016 and 2017 with observations from ICOS RI and especially ICOS-D, the German contribution to the ICOS research infrastructure. Within the SMIRES COST Action (Science and Management of Intermittent Rivers & Ephemeral Streams, www.smires.eu), examples of intermittent rivers across Europe were collected, including gauged catchments with both natural and highly influenced river flow regimes. The examples will be published in a catalogue to give a good overview of the variety of intermittent streams in Europe. Information on the gauged intermittent rivers is summarised in a two-page template: The first page of the template describes the main characteristics of the catchments (land-use, geology, climate, etc.) and the river flow regime. Two panels display hydrographs and flow durations curves and a table gives metrics specific to river flow intermittence relevant for ecology. These hydrological indices have been computed by the SMIRES R package (https://homepage.boku.ac.at/h0540352/smires/framework.html) applied to daily discharge data. The second page of the template is dedicated to the description and reasons for intermittence. A short description about the spatio-temporal pattern of zero-flow events (encompassing seasonal behaviour, observed long-term trends, locations with frequently observed zero-flow events along the river network, etc.). The monitoring network, including gauging stations and other types of observations (e.g. visual inspection of the flow states at different locations along the river) in the catchment, is also described.
