Due to the inherent unpredictability of geological conditions, tunnelling operations are often at risk of encountering water inrushes. Such incidents can lead to construction delays, impose financial strains and pose significant safety threats to the workers involved. Water‐bearing geological formations are the main triggers for such incidents, with factors such as the positioning, water quantity and permeability distribution of these formations being key to predicting the occurrence and severity of water inrush disasters. By leveraging the complex interplay among relaxation time, P‐wave velocity and permeability within the rock's physical properties, a series of indoor tests were conducted on 40 artificial reef limestone cores to extract the necessary parameters. Through the analysis of the data, the comprehensive permeability prediction model was established, and the correlation coefficient was 0.9420 between the model's predictions and actual measurements. At the same time, through theoretical and mechanism analysis, the relationship between permeability and relaxation time and the relationship between permeability and P‐wave velocity were analysed. Finally, 10 natural reef limestone samples were used to verify the accuracy of the model. The prediction model enables an accurate evaluation of tunnel permeability, thus providing a scientific basis for the mitigation of tunnel water inrush hazards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Zafra de Záncara anticline (also known as the El Hito anticline), located in the Loranca Cenozoic Basin (part of the Tagus Basin, Central Spain), had been studied by several oil companies during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 2009, within the 'Plan for selection and characterization of suitable structures of CO2 geological storage', this anticline was selected as a potential CO2 storage site. A preliminary three‐dimensional geological model, based on five geological cross sections that were constrained with the interpretation of the available seismic profiles (that are rather old and do not have very good quality), was created. With the aim of improving the geological knowledge of the Zafra de Záncara anticline and helping to investigate the suitability of a nearby anticline, namely La Rambla, as another structural closure that might make it a possible CO2 storage site, a local gravity survey (1 station every km2) was carried out in the area, seven new geological cross sections, based on these existing seismic profiles and field geology, were build, and a new three‐dimensional geological model that included both anticlines, improved through three‐dimensional stochastic gravity inversion, was constructed. The densities needed for the geological formations of the model come from the analysis of rock samples, logging data from El Hito‐1 drillhole and petrophysical information from Instituto Geológico y Minero de España database. The inversion has improved the knowledge about the geometry of the anticlines' traps and seals as well as the geometry of the basement relief and the structural relationship between basement and cover. ABSTRACT Pore throat plugging of porous rock by fine particles causes formation damage, and thus has attracted attention in various areas such as petroleum engineering, hydrology and geothermal energy production. Despite significant efforts, the detailed pore-scale mechanisms leading to formation damage and the associated permeability reduction are not well understood. We thus investigated plugging mechanisms and characteristics with a combination of ex situ (i.e., coreflooding measurements and scanning electron microscopy imaging) and in situ (i.e., nuclear magnetic resonance and μCT) methods, with a particular focus on the effect of wettability. The corefloods indicated that permeability drops rapidly when fines are injected; mechanistically thin pore throats are plugged first, followed by filling of adjacent pore bodies with the fine material (as evidenced by the nuclear magnetic resonance and μCT experiments, which can measure the pore size distribution evolution with fines injection). Furthermore, it is clear that wettability plays a major role: if fines and rock wettability are identical, plugging is significantly accelerated; wettability also controls the 3D distribution of the fines in the pore space. ABSTRACT A polyaxial (true-triaxial) stress-loading system, developed originally for determining all nine components of P- and S-wave velocities and attenuation and fluid permeability for 50.8 mm-side cubic rock specimens tested to failure, has been modified to permit the measurement of acoustic emission events associated with the failure process. Results are reported for Crosland Hill sandstone tested to failure under loading conditions leading to the formation of sets of aligned microcracks, achieved by maintaining the minor principal stress at a low value while increasing the two other principal stresses until failure of the rock. An ultrasonic survey associated with the test has been employed to map the transversely-isotropic velocity structure created by through-going parallel fractures resulting from the sets of aligned microcracks. This velocity structure has then been employed to locate acoustic emission events recorded during the test by four acoustic emission sensors located in each of the six specimen loading platens. A selection of acoustic emission events associated with one of the fractures has been processed for moment tensor analysis information, in order to determine the source type and orientation of microcracking as the fracture grows. The mechanisms indicate tensile behaviour during initial fracture propagation. Shear failure, however, appears to dominate as the fracture finally approaches the opposite face of the cubic specimen. The work presented here has, in part, led to the development of new rock testing systems and geophysical monitoring and processing technologies that will enable laboratory study of rock behaviour under conditions better resembling those experienced in situ. Analysing S‐wave splitting has become a routine step in processing multicomponent data. Typically, this analysis leads to determining the principal directions of a transversely isotropic medium with a horizontal symmetry axis, which is assumed to be responsible for azimuthal anisotropy, and to the time delays between the fast and slow S‐waves. These parameters are commonly estimated layer‐by‐layer from the top. Errors in layer stripping occurring in shallow layers might propagate to deeper layers. We propose a method for S‐wave splitting analysis and compensation that consists of inverting interval values of splitting intensity to obtain a model of anisotropic parameters that vary with time and/or depth. Splitting intensity is a robust attribute with respect to structural variations and is commutative, which means that it can be summed along a ray (or throughout a sensitivity kernel volume) and can be linearly related to anisotropic perturbations at depth. Therefore, it is possible to estimate anisotropic properties within a geological formation (e.g. the reservoir) by analysing the differences of splitting intensity measured at the top and at the bottom of the layer. This allows us to avoid layer stripping, in particular, for shallow layers where anisotropic parameters are difficult to estimate due to poor coverage, and it makes S‐wave splitting analysis simpler to apply. We demonstrate this method on synthetic and real data. Because the splitting intensity attribute shows usefulness in S‐wave splitting analysis in transversely isotropic media, we extend the splitting intensity theory to lower symmetry classes. ABSTRACT Different geophysical methods were used to determine the characteristics of a highly conductive structure in Northern Sweden, first discovered on airborne data. Airborne electromagnetic (very low frequency) data indicate a high conductivity structure coincident with low magnetic patterns. The airborne data were processed in different ways to enhance various structures/features. In particular we introduce a new transformation to current density that is suitable for delineating conductive structures. Ground measurements of the total magnetic field, radiomagnetotelluric measurements and resistivity imaging provided valuable information that was used in the compilation of a new bedrock map over the area. The results of our measurements indicate that the conducting structure consists of metasedimentary rocks containing thin horizons of pyrrhotite and graphite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The past few years have witnessed significant advances and unparalleled interest in gravity gradiometer instrument technology as well as new deployment scenarios for various applications. Gravity gradiometry is now routinely considered as a viable component for resource exploration activities as well as being deployed for global information gathering. Since the introduction of the torsion balance in the 1890s, it has been recognized that gravity gradient information is valuable – yet difficult and time-consuming to obtain. The recent acceptance and routine use of airborne gravity gradiometry for exploration has inspired many new technology developments. This paper summarizes advances in gravity gradient sensor development and also looks at deployment scenarios and gradiometer systems that have been successfully fielded. With projected improved system performance on the horizon, new challenges will also come to the forefront. Included in these challenges are aspects of instrument and system intrinsic noise, vehicle dynamic noise, terrain noise, geologic noise and other noise sources. ABSTRACT A detailed magnetotelluric survey was conducted in 2013 in the Sehqanat oil field, southwestern Iran to map the geoelectrical structures of the sedimentary Zagros zone, particularly the boundary between the Gachsaran Formation acting as cap rock and the Asmari Formation as the reservoir. According to the electrical well logs, a large resistivity contrast exists between the two formations. The Gachsaran Formation is formed by tens to hundreds of metres of evaporites and it is highly conductive (ca. 1 Ωm-10 Ωm), and the Asmari Formation consists of dense carbonates, which are considerably more resistive (more than 100 Ωm). Broadband magnetotelluric data were collected along five southwest-northeast directed parallel lines with more than 600 stations crossing the main geological trend. Although dimensionality and strike analysis of the magnetotelluric transfer functions showed that overall they satisfied local 2D conditions, there were also strong 3D conditions found in some of the sites. Therefore, in order to obtain a more reliable image of the resistivity distribution in the Sehqanat oil field, in addition to standard 2D inversion, we investigated to what extent 3D inversion of the data was feasible and what improvements in the resistivity image could be obtained. The 2D inversion models using the determinant average of the impedance tensor depict the main resistivity structures well, whereas the estimated 3D model shows significantly more details although problems were encountered in fitting the data with the latter. Both approaches resolved the Gachsaran-Asmari transition from high conductivity to moderate conductivity. The well-known Sehqanat anticline could also be delineated throughout the 2D and 3D resistivity models as a resistive dome-shaped body in the middle parts of the magnetotelluric profiles. ABSTRACT In seismic interpretation and seismic data analysis, it is of critical importance to effectively identify certain geologic formations from very large seismic data sets. In particular, the problem of salt characterization from seismic data can lead to important savings in time during the interpretation process if solved efficiently and in an automatic manner. In this work, we present a novel numerical approach that is able to automatically segmenting or identifying salt structures from a post-stack seismic data set with a minimum intervention from the interpreter. The proposed methodology is based on the recent theory of sparse representation and consists in three major steps: first, a supervised learning assisted by the user which is performed only once, second a segmentation process via unconstrained ℓ1 optimization, and finally a post-processing step based on signal separation. Furthermore, since the second step only depends upon local information at each time, the whole process greatly benefits from parallel computing platforms. We conduct numerical experiments in a synthetic 3D seismic data set demonstrating the viability of our method. More specifically, we found that the proposed approach matches up to 98.53% with respect to the corresponding 3D velocity model available in advance. Although Gassmann fluid substitution is standard practice for time-lapse studies, its validity in the field environment rests upon a number of underlying assumptions. The impact of violation on the predictions of Gassmann equations can only ultimately be validated by in situ testing in real geological environments. In this paper we show a workflow that we developed to test Gassmann fluid substitution by comparing saturated P-wave moduli computed from dry core measurements against those obtained from sonic and density logs. The workflow has been tested on 43 samples taken from a 45 m turbidite reservoir from the Campos Basin, offshore Brazil. The results show good statistical agreement between the P-wave elastic moduli computed from cores using the Gassmann equation with the corresponding moduli computed from log data. This confirms that all the assumptions of the Gassmann are adequate within the measurement error and natural variability of elastic properties. These results provide further justification for using the Gassmann theory to interpret time-lapse effects in this sandstone reservoir and in similar geological formations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT In this study, we derived accurate and high-resolution attenuation profiles using spectral ratio, centroid frequency shift, and seismic interferometry methods. We utilized high-quality vertical seismic profiling and sonic waveform data acquired in a carbonate reservoir located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The scattering profile of vertical-seismic-profiling data contributes significantly to wave attenuation that can be explained by high heterogeneity of the carbonate rocks. The scattering profile also correlates well with the reservoir lithology and fractured zones imaged by the Formation MicroImager. A tar mat zone occurs within the lower part of Arab D reservoir. This zone corresponds with a decrease in scattering attenuation. The tar mat may have filled the pores and made this zone less heterogeneous. Therefore, a decrease in scattering attenuation can be considered a potential parameter for tar mat detection. After removing the scattering effect, nonphysical negative intrinsic attenuation values still exist at certain depths. The most probable explanation for this is the three-dimensional scattering effect, which is not taken into account in this paper, and short-period upgoing waves. Seismic interferometry is less sensitive to the remaining scattered upgoing wave, which is why seismic interferometry method shows fewer negative values than the spectral ratio and centroid frequency shift methods. Compared with vertical-seismic-profiling attenuation, scattering attenuation estimated from sonic waveforms recorded in the reservoir zones is insignificant, and the intrinsic attenuation is almost equivalent to the total attenuation. We attribute this underestimation of the scattering attenuation to the sparse spatial sampling of the sonic logging data at 0.1524 m, which is not sufficient to appropriately estimate the scattering effect in heterogeneous media. The cross-plots between sonic attenuation and various petrophysical properties show slight dependence between the sonic attenuation and neutron porosity and resistivity in the reservoir zones. However, we can highlight from these plots two zones belonging to the Arab reservoirs. The lower zone corresponds to Arab D reservoir and displays higher sonic intrinsic attenuation than the upper zone (Arab A-C reservoirs) due to higher oil saturation. ABSTRACT The technical and economic success of a CO2 geological storage project requires the preservation of the site injectivity and integrity properties over its lifetime. Unlike conventional hydrocarbon gas injection, CO2 injection may imply geochemical reactions between acidified pore fluids and target reservoir formations, leading to modifications of their poromechanical properties. To date, the chemical effects on the host rock mechanical behaviour are not satisfactorily taken into account in site-scale numerical models of CO2 injection, mainly due to a lack of quantitative data. The present experimental work aims at characterizing the evolution of carbonate poromechanical properties induced by acid alteration. Unlike standard experimental approaches, the implemented alteration method induces a homogeneous dissolution pattern, which ensures reliable poromechanical measurements on altered samples. These well-controlled alteration conditions allow a proper interpretation of the test results through the macroscopic continuous approach of poromechanics. Petrophysical, geomechanical, and petroacoustic properties of outcrop carbonate samples have been measured for different levels of alteration to mimic long-term exposure to reactive brine. The obtained experimental data show clear trends of chemically induced mechanical weakening. Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and microscanner imaging performed before and after alteration have provided complementary insights into the alteration effects at the microscopic scale. ABSTRACT We show how to estimate the fluid permeability changes due to accumulated biopolymer within the pore space of a granular material using laboratory measurements of overall permeability, together with various well-known quantitative measures (e.g., porosity, specific surface area, and formation factor) of the granular medium microstructure. The main focus of the paper is on mutual validation of existing theory and a synthesis of new experimental results. We find that the theory and data are in good agreement within normal experimental uncertainties. ABSTRACT We investigated the seismic attenuation of compressional (P-) and converted shear (S-) waves through stacked basalt flows using short-offset vertical seismic profile (VSP) recordings from the Brugdan (6104/21-1) and William (6005/13-1A) wells in the Faroe-Shetland Trough. The seismic quality factors ( Q) were evaluated with the classical spectral ratio method and a root-mean-square time-domain amplitude technique. We found the latter method showed more robust results when analysing signals within the basalt sequence. For the Brugdan well we calculated effective Q estimates of 22-26 and 13-17 for P- and S-waves, respectively, and 25-33 for P-waves in the William well. An effective QS/ QP ratio of 0.50-0.77 was found from a depth interval in the basalt flow sequence where we expect fully saturated rocks. P-wave quality factor estimates are consistent with results from other VSP experiments in the North Atlantic Margin, while the S-wave quality factor is one of the first estimates from a stacked basalt formation using VSP data. Synthetic modelling demonstrates that seismic attenuation for P- and S-waves in the stacked basalt flow sequence is mainly caused by one-dimensional scattering, while intrinsic absorption is small. The way potential fields convey source information depends on the scale at which the field is analysed. In this sense a multiscale analysis is a useful method to study potential fields particularly when the main field contributions are caused by sources with different depths and extents. Our multiscale approach is built with a stable transformation, such as depth from extreme points. Its stability results from mixing, in a single operator, the wavenumber low-pass behaviour of the upward continuation transformation of the field with the enhancement high-pass properties of n-order derivative transformations. So, the complex reciprocal interference of several field components may be efficiently faced at several scales of the analysis and the depth to the sources may be estimated together with the homogeneity degrees of the field. In order to estimate the source boundaries we use another multiscale method, the multiscale derivative analysis, which utilizes a generalized concept of horizontal derivative and produces a set of boundary maps at different scales. We show through synthetic examples and application to the gravity field of Southern Italy that this multiscale behaviour makes this technique quite different from other source boundary estimators. The main result obtained by integrating multiscale derivative analysis with depth from extreme points is the retrieval of rather effective information of the field sources (horizontal boundaries, depth, structural index). This interpretative approach has been used along a specific transect for the analysis of the Bouguer anomaly field of Southern Apennines. It was set at such scales, so to emphasize either regional or local features along the transect. Two different classes of sources were individuated. The first one includes a broad, deep source with lateral size of 45∼50 km, at a depth of 13 km and having a 0.5 structural index. The second class includes several narrower sources located at shallowest depths, ranging from 3–6 km, with lateral size not larger than 5 km and structural indexes ranging from 1–1.5. The present study attempts to combine direct current and induced polarization methods for 3D geological modelling and preliminary volume estimation of gold mineralization targets in the Simi locality, Adamawa, Cameroon. To begin, resistivity and chargeability data were collected along seven profiles oriented in N150E using the electrical tomography technique. A geological investigation was also carried out and allowed in addition to the geological formations to highlight the existence of gold mineralization in the study area. The interpretation of the inversion results was done by taking into consideration the geological field data and the existing resistivity charts. The 3D distribution of the interpreted sections allowed us to make a horizontal correlation between the different sections and to elaborate the 3D geological model of the study area by using the deterministic inverse distance method. The estimated model indicates a volume of 621,130.625 m3 of the possible gold complex. The gold complex was then divided into two mineralization domains based on chargeability ranges (mV/V): A first domain is associated with a major mineralization zone (39–60 mV/V) with a volume of 10,842 m3, and a second domain is associated with secondary mineralization zone (18–39 mV/V) with a volume of 610,288 m3. This model allows to compartmentalize the gold complex and can be used as a base model for the gold investigation in the study area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We determine the attenuation structure of a three-dimensional medium based on first pulse-width measurements from microearthquake data. Ninety-five microearthquakes from a seventy stations local network were considered in this study. Measurements of the first half cycle of the wave, the so-called rise time τ were carried out on high quality velocity seismograms and inverted to estimate the P-waves intrinsic quality factor Qp. The results of this investigation indicate that first pulse width data from a local microearthquake network permit retrieval with sufficient accuracy of the heterogeneous Qp structure. This study complements two earlier papers on the interpretation and estimation of post‐stack time‐shifts that detail the most popular measurement methods to date. In this current work, the focus is on describing the magnitude and identifying the origin of the uncertainty present in these time‐shift values. We also consider how the underlying assumptions behind conventional time‐shift estimation methods can contribute to the inadequate resolution of the subsurface time‐lapse changes. The various errors fall into three broad categories: (1) those related to intrinsic data limits that cannot be avoided; (2) those associated with seismic measurement methods that can be corrected with some effort; and finally (3) those that arise due to approximations to the wave physics made during the design or implementation of the methods. In the first category are limitations due to sampling rate and signal‐to‐noise ratio, and wavelet interferences resulting from the narrow band nature of the seismic data and the heterogeneous nature of the geology itself. The effects produce errors of typically a fraction of a millisecond, but exceptionally in 4D data with poor repeatability up to 1 ms. In the second category are acquisition and processing errors. These are usually of the order of a few milliseconds but can reach up to 10s of milliseconds and are, therefore, essential to correct. It is possible to correct the effects of tides and seawater variations in marine acquisition if these changes are monitored and measured. Navigation and timing are identified as issues to consider carefully. For land data, daily and seasonal near‐surface variations are still problematic, and source and sensors must be buried to deliver interpretable time‐shifts. The impact of choices made during processing can be significant but is specific to the workflow and dataset and thus cannot be generically assessed. However, the effects from residual multiples can be identified and treated. Of moderate importance is the third category of errors, which consists of four items. Of these, the effect of lateral image shifts and amplitude effects are judged to play a minor role. Deviation from the assumption of vertical ray‐paths during post‐stack analysis appears to be of concern only for reservoirs with noticeably dipping structures and strong contrasts. The effect of pre‐stack variations on the post‐stack measurements remains a topic to be more thoroughly examined, and the conclusion is unclear. The primary focus of this study is to explore the potential mineral areas. Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer images and radiometric data were combined in the Tikirt region to map hydrothermal alteration zones associated with mineralized deposits. Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer images were analysed using band ratios, principal component analysis and a fuzzy logic model to discover argillic, phyllic, propylitic and iron oxide alterations and to generate a mineral prospectivity map. In addition, mono‐element maps of radiometric elements (K in %, eU in ppm, eTh in ppm) and their behaviour in the ternary image have been elaborated to determine the concentrations of radiometric elements and the variation of radiometric character along the exposed terrains. The F parameter was calculated to target high potassium concentration areas associated with hydrothermal alteration zones. Combining the two methods highlighted four hydrothermal alteration zones considered very promising from a mining point of view. These zones are generally linked to the magma bodies affected by normal faults and exhibit a clear spatial correlation with mineral occurrences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Established 2D seismic data processing methods such as Kirchhoff pre‐stack time migration and Kirchhoff pre‐stack depth migration function relatively well for regular acquisition geometries and well‐constrained velocity models. Recently developed focusing pre‐stack depth migration methods have the potential to enhance image quality in the case of sparse and non‐regular source–receiver distribution. We have tested the performance of the coherency migration method as one of these focusing migration approaches in comparison to standard dip‐moveout and Kirchhoff pre‐stack time migration techniques by applying them to the Swayze East seismic profile acquired in the Abitibi greenstone belt of Canada. This seismic profile represents a crooked‐line survey that intersects several metal‐bearing deformation zones, providing good target geometries to examine various pre‐stack migration methods. Analysis of the seismic data indicates reflectivity associated with shallowly dipping reflections appears relatively well preserved over the entire 0–6 km offset range for the frequency range between 20 to 90 Hz. Although most reflections are visible already in either the dip‐moveout or the Kirchhoff pre‐stack time migration results, the coherency migration method delivers the most improved image showing all reflective structures inferred for this area. The comparisons suggest the coherency migration method can be considered as superior in terms of resulting seismic image quality compared with conventional approaches for this type of crooked‐line seismic survey in such a complex geological setting. The mapping of the vertical and lateral variations in the physical properties of the few‐meter cover layer over near‐surface aquifers is important for hydrogeological modelling, particularly for the quantification of the recharge of groundwater systems. The first ground‐based time‐domain electromagnetic survey over a small catchment (Avesnelles, France) of the watershed of Orgeval (Seine basin) was carried out to determine discontinuities in the first silt layer as well as in the Brie multilevel aquifer limestone horizon. The results highlighted the following: (1) a good sensitivity of the time‐domain electromagnetic survey to the presence of multi‐decametric resistive sand lenses, particularly in a location where they were previously identified and (2) the interest in conducting a survey at a fine sampling step but extending to the meso‐scale. To overcome the sampling issue over a watershed of several hundred square kilometres, we proposed numerically assessing the use of a prototype of low‐cost airborne transient electromagnetic systems towed by light fixed‐wing airplanes (with transmitting and receiving loops in the same plane). The present numerical analysis, in 1D for the vertical (i.e. thickness) variation and in 3D for the lateral extensions of localized sandy and resistive units, showed that a conductive few‐meter cover can be mapped even with a system flying at 50 m with, however, the need of a priori constraint on the resistivity of the first layer to estimate its thickness variation as accurately as possible. Even if it did not bring more sensitivity to the layer thickness and despite the severe difficulty of practical implementation with a decametric emission loop, the vertical co‐planar configuration potentially offered better near‐surface lateral resolution (down to ∼40 m) to delineate the sandy units (discontinuities) within the silt layer (if units are at least 50 m in size) and provided better spatial constraints compared to the classical horizontal co‐planar geometry used in the time‐domain electromagnetic. Even if not aerodynamically in the plane of the emission loop, the measurement of the Hx component with a vertical dipole emission loop (PERPxz geometry for perpendicular) improved the lateral resolution (down to ∼20 m; still with at least 50 m size sand units) and confirmed that a geometry different from the classical horizontal co‐planar configuration could be valuable. The propagation of microseismicity in subsurface media is complex. We developed an anisotropic petrophysical model based on an empirical formula, linear slip theory and the bond transform method considering real underground conditions. Using Biot's equations, the seismic response to a general dislocation source in fracture‐induced anisotropic two‐phased media was solved using a staggered grid high‐order finite‐difference algorithm. To understand the relationship between the microseismic wave and fracture parameters, we then designed several different models to calculate the wavefield snapshots and analyse the effect of the fracture volume ratio and orientation. The modelling results indicate that the shear faulting source generates three types of waves in two‐phase media. Fractures can render homogeneous media anisotropic, and anisotropy becomes more noticeable with an increase in the fracture volume ratio. This decreases the velocity of the fast longitudinal and transverse waves in the vertical direction and increases the velocity of the slow longitudinal wave in a certain range. The fracture orientation mainly influences the moment tensor and then affects the wavefronts. Producing an accurate and valid mineral prospectivity map is one of the most significant parts of mineral exploration studies. For this purpose, it is needed to obtain valid evidential layers and integrate them with an accurate methodology. Knowledge and data‐driven methods are two primary techniques applied to combine various evidential layers for mineral prospectivity mapping, of which each of them includes a variety of analytical techniques. In this study, in the first step, satellite data, aeromagnetic and airborne radiometric data, stream sediment geochemical data and geological data were applied to create valid remote sensing, geophysical, geochemical, lineaments and lithological evidential layers of the study area that are an essential factor in recognition porphyry copper mineralization, then in the second step, based on the known mineralization occurrences data, the evidential layers were weighted. Finally, these layers were integrated using fuzzy logic and index overlay methods in a combination of knowledge and data‐driven way. Validation of each layer was done using available data in the second step. The final mineral prospectivity map was evaluated, and the confirmation of this layer detected that the final mineral prospectivity map obtained from data‐driven multi‐index overlay method has a higher ore prediction rate of 76%, which identifies 24% of the area as potential zones for further exploration. The Central‐Eastern Mediterranean region is known to be a complex area due to the interaction of four tectonic plates, namely Arabia, Africa, Anatolia and Eurasia, and by the presence of an ancient oceanic crust in the Herodotus and Ionian Basins. The analysis of the available literature highlights that the distribution of the freely available geophysical data (i.e. seismic, gravity and magnetic observations) is quite disparate. In this framework, high‐resolution global gravity field models, such as XGM2019e, mainly based (offshore) on satellite data, can be profitably used as a uniform dataset to study, in a coherent way, large regions. In the current work, we exploit the XGM2019e model, together with a set of a priori information, derived mainly from geophysical data retrieved from the literature, to study the structure of the crust in the Central‐Eastern Mediterranean area. The study is organized in three different phases: in the first one, we enhanced the map of geological crustal provinces by means of an automatic Bayesian classification algorithm applied to the second radial derivatives of the gravitational potential. In the second phase, using as observation a grid of gravity anomalies, we applied a full three‐dimensional inversion procedure (always based on a Bayesian paradigm) to estimate the mass density variations and the geometries of the main geological units in the whole study area. Finally, in the third phase, we performed a refined three‐dimensional local inversion on the Cyprus area to improve the modelling of the shallowest layers. Seismic methods are often used for fracture detection and characterization, for which many analytical rock physics models have been developed to link fracture parameters to rock elastic properties. However, most of these models are limited to isotropic background and circular (penny‐shaped) fractures. In this work, we derived a more general analytical model for effective elastic properties of rocks embedded with aligned elliptical cracks in transversely isotropic background. The solutions for the case with dry cracks parallel to isotropic plane of transversely isotropic background were first derived using the corresponding Eshelby's tensor. Then, the results were extended to the case with inclined and rotated cracks under the assumption of constant crack opening displacement tensor. Finally, to obtain the results for fluid‐filled crack case, the Brown–Korringa equation was applied. To investigate the controlling factors on rock elastic properties, we studied one fractured tight sandstone sample with transversely isotropic background. The results show that rock elastic properties are insensitive to crack spin angle, but sensitive to crack inclination angle. Depending on crack inclination angle and fluid saturation, background anisotropy can either amplify or reduce the anisotropy of seismic wave velocity. Crack density and aspect ratio are found to be controlling crack parameters for rock elastic properties. The crack plane shape has negligible direct influence on rock elastic properties, whereas it has indirect influence by affecting values of crack density and aspect ratio. Compared with the numerical model and the previous analytical model for the special case with circular cracks, our model agrees well with them, which validates the accuracy of our model. The estimation of the Q factor of rocks by seismic surveys is a powerful tool for reservoir characterization, as it helps detecting possible fractures and saturating fluids. Seismic tomography allows building 3D macro‐models for the Q factor, using methods as the spectral ratio and the frequency shift. Both these algorithms require windowing the seismic signal accurately in the time domain; however, this process can hardly follow the continuous variations of the wavelet length as a function of offset and propagation effects, and it is biased by the interpreter choice. In this paper, we highlight some drawback of signal windowing in the frequency‐shift method, and introduce a tomographic approach to estimate the Q factor using the complex attributes of the seismic trace. We show that such approach is particularly needed when the dispersion is broadening the waveforms of signals with a long wave‐path. Our method still requires an interpretative event picking, but no other parameters as the time window length and its possible smoothing options. We validate the new method with synthetic and real data examples, involving the joint tomographic inversion of direct and reflected signals. We show that a calibration of the frequency‐shift method is needed to improve the estimation of the absolute Q factor, otherwise only relative contrasts are obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geological interpretation based on gravity gradiometry data constitutes a very challenging problem. Rigorous 3D inversion is the main technique used in quantitative interpretation of the gravity gradiometry data. An alternative approach to the quantitative analysis of the gravity gradiometry data is based on 3D smooth potential field migration. This rapid imaging approach, however, has the shortcomings of providing smooth images since it is based on direct integral transformation of the observed gravity tensor data. Another limitation of migration transformation is related to the fact that, in a general case, the gravity data generated by the migration image do not fit the observed data well. In this paper, we describe a new approach to rapid imaging that allows us to produce the density distribution which adequately describes the observed data and, at the same time, images the structures with anomalous densities having sharp boundaries. This approach is based on the basic theory of potential field migration with a focusing stabilizer in the framework of regularized scheme, which iteratively transfers the observed gravity tensor field into an image of the density distribution in the subsurface formations. The results of gravity migration can also be considered as an a priori model for conventional inversion subsequently. We demonstrate the practical application of migration imaging using both synthetic and real gravity gradiometry data sets acquired for the Nordkapp Basin in the Barents Sea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the framework of the Deep Electromagnetic Soundings for Mineral Exploration project, we conducted ground‐based long‐offset transient‐electromagnetic measurements in a former mining area in eastern Thuringia, Germany. The large‐scale survey resulted in an extensive dataset acquired with multiple high‐power transmitters and a high number of electric and magnetic field receivers. The recorded data exhibit a high data quality over several decades of time and orders of magnitude. Although the obtained subsurface models indicate a strong multi‐dimensional subsurface with variations in resistivity over three orders of magnitude, the electrical field step‐on transients are well fitted using a conventional one‐dimensional inversion. Due to superimposed induced polarization effects, the transient step‐off data are not interpretable with conventional electromagnetic inversion. For further interpretation in one and two dimensions, a new approach to evaluate the long‐offset transient‐electromagnetic data in frequency domain is realized. We present a detailed workflow for data processing in both domains and give an overview of technical obstructions that can occur in one domain or the other. The derived one‐dimensional inversion models of frequency‐domain data show strong multi‐dimensional effects and are well comparable with the conventional time domain inversion results. To adequately interpret the data, a 2.5D frequency‐domain inversion using the open source algorithm MARE2DEM (Modeling with Adaptively Refined Elements for 2‐D EM) is carried out. The inversion leads to a consistent subsurface model with shallow and deep conductive structures, which are confirmed by geology and additional geophysical surveys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with the design, acquisition and processing of vertical seismic profiling data collected in 2016 at the directional Thônex‐01 geothermal well, drilled in 1993 in the Geneva Canton (Switzerland). The aim of the study was to obtain additional information from existing‐abandoned well for downhole geophysical characterization of potential geothermal reservoirs in the Geneva area. The main results obtained by this study allowed an improved subsurface image by multi‐offset acquisitions near and around the deviated well. Specifically we were able to (1) improve the velocity model of the Geneva Basin, which, at present, is only constrained by one unique deep exploration well, located at the south‐west of the basin, far away from the study area; (2) image the transition between the Tertiary Molasse siliciclastic sediments and the Mesozoic carbonates; (3) define an acquisition strategy for future vertical seismic profiling surveys in support of the geothermal exploration campaigns in the area. This study has demonstrated the value of vertical seismic profiling method for the refinement of the subsurface geology at local scale, and its usefulness to assist the planning of second well associated with geothermal doublets. As the global need for mineral resources is constantly rising and the exploitable concentrations of these resources tend to become increasingly complex to explore and exploit, the mining industry is in a constant quest for innovative and cost‐effective exploration solutions. In this context, and in the framework of the Smart Exploration action, an integrated passive seismic survey was launched in the Gerolekas bauxite mining site in Central Greece. A passive seismic network, consisting of 129 three‐component short‐period stations was installed and operated continuously for 4 months. The acquired data permitted detection of approximately 1000 microearthquakes of very small magnitude (duration magnitude ranging between –1.5 and 2.0), located within or at a very close distance from the study area. We use this microseismicity as input for the application of passive seismic interferometry for reflection retrieval, using the body waves (P‐ and S‐wave coda) of the located microearthquakes. We retrieve by autocorrelation zero‐offset virtual reflection responses, per component, below each of the recording stations. We process the acquired results using reflection processing techniques to obtain zero‐offset time and depth sections, both for P‐ and for S‐waves. In the context of the present work, we evaluate one of the acquired depth sections, using an existing seismic line passing through the Gerolekas passive seismic network, and we perform forward modelling to assess the quality and value of the acquired results. We confirm that passive seismic reflected‐wave interferometry could constitute a cost‐effective and environmentally friendly innovative exploration alternative, especially in cases of difficult exploration settings. In 2017, the Metal Earth multi‐disciplinary exploration project acquired a total of 921 km of regional deep seismic reflection profiles and 184 km of high‐resolution seismic reflection profiles in the Abitibi and Wabigoon greenstone belts of the Superior province of Canada. The Abitibi belt hosts several world‐class mineral deposits, whereas the Wabigoon has sparse economic mineral deposits. Two high‐resolution surveys in the Swayze area, a poorly endowed part of the western Abitibi greenstone belt, served as pioneer surveys with which to better understand subsurface geology and design a strategy to process other surveys in the near future. Swayze seismic data were acquired with crooked survey geometries along roads. Designing an effective seismic processing flow to address these geometries and complex geology required straight common midpoint lines along which both two‐dimensional prestack dip‐moveout correction and poststack migration processing were applied. The resulting seismic sections revealed steeply dipping and subhorizontal reflections; some correlate with folded surface rocks. An interpreted fault/deformation zone imaged in Swayze north would be a target for metal endowment if it extends the Porcupine–Destor structure. Because of the crooked line geometry of the surveys, two‐dimensional /three‐dimensional prestack time migration and swath three‐dimensional processing were tested. The prestack time migration algorithm confirmed reflections at the interpreted base of the Abitibi greenstone belt. The swath three‐dimensional images provided additional spatial details about the geometries of some reflections, but also had less resolution and did not detect many reflectors observed in two dimensions. Geological contacts between felsic, mafic and ultramafic greenstone rock layers are thought the main cause of reflectivity in the Swayze area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CO2 saturations are estimated at Sleipner using a two‐step imaging workflow. The workflow combines seismic tomography (full‐waveform inversion) and rock physics inversion and is applied to a two‐dimensional seismic line located near the injection point at Sleipner. We use baseline data (1994 vintage, before CO2 injection) and monitor data that was acquired after 12 years of CO2 injection (2008 vintage). P‐wave velocity models are generated using the Full waveform inversion technology and then, we invert selected rock physics parameters using an rock physics inversion methodology. Full waveform inversion provides high‐resolution P‐wave velocity models both for baseline and monitor data. The physical relations between rock physics properties and acoustic wave velocities in the Utsira unconsolidated sandstone (reservoir formation) are defined using a dynamic rock physics model based on well‐known Biot–Gassmann theories. For data prior to injection, rock frame properties (porosity, bulk and shear dry moduli) are estimated using rock physics inversion that allows deriving physically consistent properties with related uncertainty. We show that the uncertainty related to limited input data (only P‐wave velocity) is not an issue because the mean values of parameters are correct. These rock frame properties are then used as a priori constraint in the monitor case. For monitor data, the Full waveform inversion results show nicely resolved thin layers of CO2–brine saturated sandstones under intra‐reservoir shale layers. The CO2 saturation estimation is carried out by plugging an effective fluid phase in the rock physics model. Calculating the effective fluid bulk modulus of the brine–CO2 mixture (using Brie equation in our study) is shown to be the key factor to link P‐wave velocity to CO2 saturation. The inversion tests are done with several values of Brie/patchiness exponent and show that the CO2 saturation estimates are varying between 0.30 and 0.90 depending on the rock physics model and the location in the reservoir. The uncertainty in CO2 saturation estimation is usually lower than 0.20. When the patchiness exponent is considered as unknown, the inversion is less constrained and we end up with values of exponent varying between 5 and 20 and up to 33 in specific reservoir areas. These estimations tend to show that the CO2–brine mixing is between uniform and patchy mixing and variable throughout the reservoir. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seismic attenuation mechanisms receive increasing attention for the characterization of fractured formations because of their inherent sensitivity to the hydraulic and elastic properties of the probed media. Attenuation has been successfully inferred from seismic data in the past, but linking these estimates to intrinsic rock physical properties remains challenging. A reason for these difficulties in fluid‐saturated fractured porous media is that several mechanisms can cause attenuation and may interfere with each other. These mechanisms notably comprise pressure diffusion phenomena and dynamic effects, such as scattering, as well as Biot's so‐called intrinsic attenuation mechanism. Understanding the interplay between these mechanisms is therefore an essential step for estimating fracture properties from seismic measurements. In order to do this, we perform a comparative study involving wave propagation modelling in a transmission set‐up based on Biot's low‐frequency dynamic equations and numerical upscaling based on Biot's consolidation equations. The former captures all aforementioned attenuation mechanisms and their interference, whereas the latter only accounts for pressure diffusion phenomena. A comparison of the results from both methods therefore allows to distinguish between dynamic and pressure diffusion phenomena and to shed light on their interference. To this end, we consider a range of canonical models with randomly distributed vertical and/or horizontal fractures. We observe that scattering attenuation strongly interferes with pressure diffusion phenomena, since the latter affect the elastic contrasts between fractures and their embedding background. Our results also demonstrate that it is essential to account for amplitude reductions due to transmission losses to allow for an adequate estimation of the intrinsic attenuation of fractured media. Integration of all available data in reservoir characterization is critically important. 2D mapping is a reliable and robust technique that allows integration of multiple secondary data, including geological and geophysical surfaces and maps, to generate realistic summaries of reservoir quality at each location in an area of interest with an associated measure of uncertainty. This is achieved in 2D mapping with a more straightforward implementation, requiring significantly less time and fewer resources than three‐dimensional modelling. In this paper, we propose an approach for the empirical calculation and optimization of differential compaction maps by leveraging existing well control for the use in 2D mapping. Success of the proposal is demonstrated through tests of accuracy, precision and fairness of the local uncertainty distributions for 100 new stratigraphical wells drilled in the Christina Lake and Kirby East area. P‐wave and S‐wave velocities are vital parameters for the processing of seismic data and may be useful for geotechnical studies used in mine planning if such data were collected more often. Seismic velocity data from boreholes increase the robustness and accuracy of the images obtained by relatively costly seismic surface reflection surveys. However, sonic logs are rarely acquired in boreholes in‐and‐near base metal and precious metal mineral deposits until a seismic survey is planned, and only a few new holes are typically logged because the many hundreds of holes previously drilled are no longer accessible. If there are any pre‐existing petrophysical log data, then the data are likely to consist of density, magnetic susceptibility, resistivity and natural gamma logs. Thus, it would be of great benefit to be able to predict the velocities from other data that is more readily available. In this work, we utilize fuzzy c‐means clustering to build a "fuzzy" relationship between sonic velocities and other petrophysical borehole data to predict P‐wave and S‐wave velocity. If boreholes with sonic data intersect most of the important geological units in the area of interest, then the cluster model developed may be applied to other boreholes that do not have sonic data, but do have other petrophysical data to be used for predicting the sonic logs. These predicted sonic logs may then be used to create a three‐dimensional volume of velocity with greater detail than would otherwise be created by the interpolation of measured sonic data from sparsely located holes. Our methodology was tested on a dataset from the Kevitsa Ni‐Cu‐PGE deposit in northern Finland. The dataset includes five boreholes with wireline logs of P‐wave velocity, S‐wave velocity, density, natural gamma, magnetic susceptibility and resistivity that were used for cluster analysis. The best combination of input data for the training section was chosen by trial and error, but differences in the misfit between the various training datasets were not particularly significant. Our results show that the fuzzy c‐means method can predict sonic velocities from other borehole data very well, and the fuzzy c‐means method works better than using multiple linear‐regression fitting. The predicted P‐wave velocity data are of sufficient quality to robustly add low‐frequency information for seismic impedance inversion and should provide better velocity models for accurate depth conversion of seismic reflection data. ABSTRACT: The sequestration of CO2 in subsurface reservoirs constitutes an immediate counter‐measure to reduce anthropogenic emissions of CO2, now recognized by international scientific panels to be the single most critical factor driving the observed global climatic warming. To ensure and verify the safe geological containment of CO2 underground, monitoring of the CO2 site is critical. In the high Arctic, environmental considerations are paramount and human impact through, for instance, active seismic surveys, has to be minimized. Efficient seismic modelling is a powerful tool to test the detectability and imaging capability prior to acquisition and thus improve the characterization of CO2 storage sites, taking both geological setting and seismic acquisition set‐up into account. The unique method presented here avoids the costly generation of large synthetic data sets by employing point spread functions to directly generate pre‐stack depth‐migrated seismic images. We test both a local‐target approach using an analytical filter assuming an average velocity and a full‐field approach accounting for the spatial variability of point spread functions. We assume a hypothetical CO2 plume emplaced in a sloping aquifer inspired by the conditions found at the University of Svalbard CO2 lab close to Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway, constituting an unconventional reservoir–cap rock system. Using the local‐target approach, we find that even the low‐to‐moderate values of porosity (5%–18%) measured in the reservoir should be sufficient to induce significant change in seismic response when CO2 is injected. The sensitivity of the seismic response to changes in CO2 saturation, however, is limited once a relatively low saturation threshold of 5% is exceeded. Depending on the illumination angle provided by the seismic survey, the quality of the images of five hypothetical CO2 plumes of varying volume differs depending on the steepness of their flanks. When comparing the resolution of two orthogonal 2D surveys to a 3D survey, we discover that the images of the 2D surveys contain significant artefacts, the CO2‐brine contact is misplaced and an additional reflector is introduced due to the projection of the point spread function of the unresolvable plane onto the imaging plane. All of these could easily lead to a misinterpretation of the behaviour of the injected CO2. Our workflow allows for testing the influence of geological heterogeneities in the target aquifer (igneous intrusions, faults, pervasive fracture networks) by utilizing increasingly complex and more realistic geological models as input as more information on the subsurface becomes available. ABSTRACT: The geological storage of carbon dioxide is considered as one of the measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to mitigate global warming. Operators of storage sites are required to demonstrate safe containment and stable behaviour of the storage complex that is achieved by geophysical and geochemical monitoring, combined with reservoir simulations. For site characterization, as well as for imaging the carbon dioxide plume in the reservoir complex and detecting potential leakage, surface and surface‐borehole time‐lapse seismic monitoring surveys are the most widespread and established tools. At the Ketzin pilot site for carbon dioxide storage, permanently installed fibre‐optic cables, initially deployed for distributed temperature sensing, were used as seismic receiver arrays, demonstrating their ability to provide high‐resolution images of the storage formation. A vertical seismic profiling experiment was acquired using 23 source point locations and the daisy‐chained deployment of a fibre‐optic cable in four wells as a receiver array. The data were used to generate a 3D vertical seismic profiling cube, complementing the large‐scale 3D surface seismic measurements by a high resolution image of the reservoir close to the injection well. Stacking long vibro‐sweeps at each source location resulted in vertical seismic profiling shot gathers characterized by a signal‐to‐noise ratio similar to gathers acquired using geophones. A detailed data analysis shows strong dependency of data quality on borehole conditions with significantly better signal‐to‐noise ratio in regions with good coupling conditions. ABSTRACT: The oil shale exploration program in Jordan is undertaking great activity in the domain of applied geophysical methods to evaluate bitumen‐bearing rock. In the study area, the bituminous marl or oil shale exhibits a rock type dominated by lithofacies layers composed of chalky limestone, marls, clayey marls, and phosphatic marls. The study aims to present enhancements for oil shale seam detection using progressive interpretation from a one‐dimensional inversion to a three‐dimensional modelling and inversion of ground‐based transient electromagnetic data at an area of stressed geological layers. The geophysical survey combined 58 transient electromagnetic sites to produce geoelectrical structures at different depth slices, and cross sections were used to characterise the horizon of the most likely sites for mining oil shale. The results show valuable information on the thickness of the oil shale seam at 3.7 Ωm, which is correlated to the geoelectrical layer between 2‐ and 4 ms transient time delays, and at depths ranging between 85 and 105 m. The 300 m penetrated depth of the transient electromagnetic soundings allows the resolution of the main geological units at narrow resistivity contrast and the distinction of the main geological structures that constrain the detection of the oil shale seam. This geoelectrical layer at different depth slices illustrates a localised oil shale setting and can be spatially correlated with an area bounded by fold and fault systems. Also, three‐dimensional modelling and inversion for synthetic and experimental data are introduced at the faulted area. The results show the limitations of oil shale imaging at a depth exceeding 130 m, which depends on the near‐surface resistivity layer, the low resistivity contrast of the main lithological units, and the degree of geological detail achieved at a suitable model's misfit value. ABSTRACT: Resistivity monitoring surveys are used to detect temporal changes in the subsurface using repeated measurements over the same site. The positions of the electrodes are typically measured at the start of the survey program and possibly at occasional later times. In areas with unstable ground, such as landslide‐prone slopes, the positions of the electrodes can be displaced by ground movements. If this occurs at times when the positions of the electrodes are not directly measured, they have to be estimated. This can be done by interpolation or, as in recent developments, from the resistivity data using new inverse methods. The smoothness‐constrained least squares optimisation method can be modified to include the electrode positions as additional unknown parameters. The Jacobian matrices with the sensitivity of the apparent resistivity measurements to changes in the electrode positions are then required by the optimisation method. In this paper, a fast adjoint‐equation method is used to calculate the Jacobian matrices required by the least squares method to reduce the calculation time. In areas with large near‐surface resistivity contrasts, the inversion routine sometimes cannot accurately distinguish between electrode displacements and subsurface resistivity variations. To overcome this problem, the model for the initial time‐lapse dataset (with accurately known electrode positions) is used as the starting model for the inversion of the later‐time dataset. This greatly improves the accuracy of the estimated electrode positions compared to the use of a homogeneous half‐space starting model. In areas where the movement of the electrodes is expected to occur in a fixed direction, the method of transformations can be used to include this information as an additional constraint in the optimisation routine. ABSTRACT The injection of CO2 at the Ketzin pilot CO2 storage site started in June 2008 and ended in August 2013. During the 62 months of injection, a total amount of about 67 kt of CO2 was injected into a saline aquifer. A third repeat three-dimensional seismic survey, serving as the first post-injection survey, was acquired in 2015, aiming to investigate the recent movement of the injected CO2. Consistent with the previous two time-lapse surveys, a predominantly west-northwest migration of the gaseous CO2 plume in the up-dip direction within the reservoir is inferred in this first post-injection survey. No systematic anomalies are detected through the reservoir overburden. The extent of the CO2 plume west of the injection site is almost identical to that found in the 2012 second repeat survey (after injection of 61 kt); however, there is a significant decrease in its size east of the injection site. Assessment of the CO2 plume distribution suggests that the decrease in the size of the anomaly may be due to multiple factors, such as limited vertical resolution, CO2 dissolution, and CO2 migration into thin layers, in addition to the effects of ambient noise. Four-dimensional seismic modelling based on dynamic flow simulations indicates that a dynamic balance between the newly injected CO2 after the second repeat survey and the CO2 migrating into thin layers and being dissolved was reached by the time of the first post-injection survey. In view of the significant uncertainties in CO2 mass estimation, both patchy and non-patchy saturation models for the Ketzin site were taken into consideration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT We present a new inversion method to estimate, from prestack seismic data, blocky P- and S-wave velocity and density images and the associated sparse reflectivity levels. The method uses the three-term Aki and Richards approximation to linearise the seismic inversion problem. To this end, we adopt a weighted mixed l2, 1-norm that promotes structured forms of sparsity, thus leading to blocky solutions in time. In addition, our algorithm incorporates a covariance or scale matrix to simultaneously constrain P- and S-wave velocities and density. This a priori information is obtained by nearby well-log data. We also include a term containing a low-frequency background model. The l2, 1 mixed norm leads to a convex objective function that can be minimised using proximal algorithms. In particular, we use the fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm. A key advantage of this algorithm is that it only requires matrix-vector multiplications and no direct matrix inversion. The latter makes our algorithm numerically stable, easy to apply, and economical in terms of computational cost. Tests on synthetic and field data show that the proposed method, contrarily to conventional l2- or l1-norm regularised solutions, is able to provide consistent blocky and/or sparse estimators of P- and S-wave velocities and density from a noisy and limited number of observations. ABSTRACT We present a comprehensive characterisation of the physical, mineralogical, geomechanical, geophysical, and hydrodynamic properties of Corvio sandstone. This information, together with a detailed assessment of anisotropy, is needed to establish Corvio sandstone as a useful laboratory rock-testing standard for well-constrained studies of thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical coupled phenomena associated with CO2 storage practices and for geological reservoir studies in general. More than 200 core plugs of Corvio sandstone (38.1 and 50 mm diameters, 2:1 length-to-diameter ratio) were used in this characterisation study, with a rock porosity of 21.7 ± 1.2%, dry density 2036 ± 32 kg m−3, and unconfined compressive and tensile strengths of 41 ± 3.28 and 2.3 ± 0.14 MPa, respectively. Geomechanical tests show that the rock behaves elastically between ∼10 and ∼18 MPa under unconfined conditions with associated Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of 11.8 ± 2.8 GPa and 0.34 ± 0.01 GPa, respectively. Permeability abruptly decreases with confining pressure up to ∼10 MPa and then stabilises at ∼1 mD. Ultrasonic P- and S-wave velocities vary from about 2.8-3.8 km s−1 and 1.5-2.4 km s−1, respectively, over confining and differential pressures between 0.1 and 35 MPa, allowing derivation of associated dynamic elastic moduli. Anisotropy was investigated using oriented core plugs for electrical resistivity, elastic wave velocity and attenuation, permeability, and tracer injection tests. ABSTRACT We investigate a novel way to introduce resistivity models deriving from airborne electromagnetic surveys into regional geological modelling. Standard geometrical geological modelling can be strengthened using geophysical data. Here, we propose to extract information contained in a resistivity model in the form of local slopes that constrain the modelling of geological interfaces. The proposed method is illustrated on an airborne electromagnetic survey conducted in the region of Courtenay in France. First, a resistivity contrast corresponding to the clay/chalk interface was interpreted confronting the electromagnetic soundings to boreholes. Slopes were then sampled on this geophysical model and jointly interpolated with the clay/chalk interface documented in boreholes using an implicit 3D potential-field method. In order to evaluate this new joint geophysical-geological model, its accuracy was compared with that of both pure geological and pure geophysical models for various borehole configurations. The proposed joint modelling yields the most accurate clay/chalk interface whatever the number and location of boreholes taken into account for modelling and validation. Compared with standard geological modelling, the approach introduces in between boreholes geometrical information derived from geophysical results. Compared with conventional resistivity interpretation of the geophysical model, it reduces drift effects and honours the boreholes. The method therefore improves what is commonly obtained with geological or geophysical data separately, making it very attractive for robust 3D geological modelling of the subsurface. ABSTRACT The possibility of a time-domain electromagnetic sounding method using excitation and measurement of vertical electric fields to search for and identify deeply buried reservoirs of hydrocarbons offshore is investigated. The method operates on source-receiver offsets, which are several times less than the depth of the reservoir. Geoelectric information is obtained from the transient responses recorded in the pauses between the pulses of electric current in the absence of the source field. The basics of the method, as well as its sensitivity, resolution, and the highest accessible depth of soundings for various geological conditions in a wide range of sea depths, are analyzed. For the analysis, 1D and 3D geoelectric models of hydrocarbon reservoirs are used. It is shown that under existing technologies of excitation and measurement of vertical electric fields, the highest accessible depth of soundings can be up to 4 km. ABSTRACT We study the mechanical deformation of fractures under normal stress, via tangent and specific fracture stiffnesses, for different length scales using numerical simulations and analytical insights. First, we revisit an equivalent elastic layer model that leads to two expressions: the tangent stiffness is the sum of an 'intrinsic' stiffness and the normal stress, and the specific stiffness is the tangent stiffness divided by the fracture aperture at current stress. Second, we simulate the deformation of rough fractures using a boundary element method where fracture surfaces represented by elastic asperities on an elastic half-space follow a self-affine distribution. A large number of statistically identical 'parent' fractures are generated, from which sub-fractures of smaller dimensions are extracted. The self-affine distribution implies that the stress-free fracture aperture increases with fracture length with a power law in agreement with the chosen Hurst exponent. All simulated fractures exhibit an increase in the specific stiffness with stress and an average decrease with increase in length consistent with field observations. The simulated specific and tangent stiffnesses are well described by the equivalent layer model provided the 'intrinsic' stiffness slightly decreases with fracture length following a power law. By combining numerical simulations and the analytical model, the effect of scale and stress on fracture stiffness measures can be easily separated using the concept of 'intrinsic' stiffness. We learn that the primary reason for the variability in specific stiffness with length comes from the fact that the typical aperture of the self-affine fractures itself scales with the length of the fractures. ABSTRACT Geological reservoirs can be structurally complex and can respond to CO2 injection both geochemically and geomechanically. Hence, predicting reservoir formation behaviour in response to CO2 injection and assessing the resulting hazards are important prerequisites for safe geological CO2 storage. This requires a detailed study of thermal-hydro-mechanical-chemical coupled phenomena that can be triggered in the reservoir formation, most readily achieved through laboratory simulations of CO2 injection into typical reservoir formations. Here, we present the first results from a new experimental apparatus of a steady-state drainage flooding test conducted through a synthetic sandstone sample, simulating real CO2 storage reservoir conditions in a shallow (∼1 km), low permeability ∼1mD, 26% porosity sandstone formation. The injected pore fluid comprised brine with CO2 saturation increasing in steps of 20% brine/CO2 partial flow rates up to 100% CO2 flow. At each pore fluid stage, an unload/loading cycle of effective pressure was imposed to study the response of the rock under different geomechanical scenarios. The monitoring included axial strains and relative permeability in a continuous mode (hydromechanical assessment), and related geophysical signatures (ultrasonic P-wave and S-wave velocities Vp and Vs, and attenuations Qp−1 and Qs−1, respectively, and electrical resistivity). On average, the results showed Vp and Vs dropped ∼7% and ∼4% respectively during the test, whereas Qp−1 increased ∼55% and Qs−1 decreased by ∼25%. From the electrical resistivity data, we estimated a maximum CO2 saturation of ∼0.5, whereas relative permeability curves were adjusted for both fluids. Comparing the experimental results to theoretical predictions, we found that Gassmann's equations explain Vp at high and very low CO2 saturations, whereas bulk modulus yields results consistent with White and Dutta-Odé model predictions. This is interpreted as a heterogeneous distribution of the two pore fluid phases, corroborated by electrical resistivity tomography images. The integration of laboratory geophysical and hydromechanical observations on representative shallow low-permeable sandstone reservoir allowed us to distinguish between pure geomechanical responses and those associated with the pore fluid distribution. Fluid depletion within a compacting reservoir can lead to significant stress and strain changes and potentially severe geomechanical issues, both inside and outside the reservoir. We extend previous research of time-lapse seismic interpretation by incorporating synthetic near-offset and full-offset common-midpoint reflection data using anisotropic ray tracing to investigate uncertainties in time-lapse seismic observations. The time-lapse seismic simulations use dynamic elasticity models built from hydro-geomechanical simulation output and a stress-dependent rock physics model. The reservoir model is a conceptual two-fault graben reservoir, where we allow the fault fluid-flow transmissibility to vary from high to low to simulate noncompartmentalized and compartmentalized reservoirs, respectively. The results indicate time-lapse seismic amplitude changes and travel-time shifts can be used to qualitatively identify reservoir compartmentalization. Due to the high repeatability and good quality of the time-lapse synthetic dataset, the estimated travel-time shifts and amplitude changes for near-offset data match the true model subsurface changes with minimal errors. A 1D velocity-strain relation was used to estimate the vertical velocity change for the reservoir bottom interface by applying zero-offset time shifts from both the near-offset and full-offset measurements. For near-offset data, the estimated P-wave velocity changes were within 10% of the true value. However, for full-offset data, time-lapse attributes are quantitatively reliable using standard time-lapse seismic methods when an updated velocity model is used rather than the baseline model.
