Few modern sediment dispersal pathways predate the breakup of Pangea. This suggests that river lifespan can be controlled by continental assembly and dispersal cycles, with the longest-lived river systems present during supercontinent regimes. Based on the strikingly similar age spectra and Hf isotopic array extracted from Paleozoic to early Mesozoic sedimentary sequences from the Paleo-Tethyan margin basins, we argue that a long-lived supercontinental- scale system, with headwaters originating in Antarctica, flowed northward to finally debouch on the margin with the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. Channel-belt thickness scaling relationships, which provide an estimate of drainage area, support the notion that this was a supercontinental-scale system. Sediments were eroded from Proterozoic orogenic belts and flanked resistant kernels of Archean cratons. Remnants of this system, which can still be traced today as topographic lows, controlled post-breakup drainage patterns in Gondwanan fragments in Western Australia. We conclude that supercontinental regimes allow sediment dispersal systems to be long-lived, as they provide both an abundant sediment supply, due to erosion of large-scale, collision-related internal mountain systems, and a stable, large-scale configuration that lasts until breakup. Kimberlite magmas are volatile-rich, potassic, and ultramafic, and they are host to most of the world's diamond deposits. A continental-scale kimberlite magmatic belt (the central Cretaceous kimberlite corridor [CCKC]) is found in the interior of the North American continent. Parallel to and coeval with the CCKC, the Cretaceous Omineca magmatic belt (OMB) is located in the Cordilleran orogen. Cordilleran magmatism, including the OMB, is commonly explained through long-lived east-dipping subduction beneath the western margin of the continent. However, this does not explain the temporal and spatial relationships between the OMB and CCKC. We suggest that west-dipping subduction of North American lithosphere beneath the eastern side of the Cordillera explains both. In this model, subduction resulted in arc magmatism of the OMB. The contemporaneous CCKC was formed by extensional stress acting on the continent as it flexed upon entry into the trench. Using a semi-infinite elastic beam model, we show that flexure of a subducting continental plate (elastic thickness = 120 km) produces tensile stresses in the deep continental lithosphere, coincident with the location of the CCKC. Understanding the thermal evolution of the Alleghanian orogen in the southernmost Appalachians (southeastern United States) is key to understanding the orogenic collapse and extensional tectonics that led to the breakup of Pangea. Cooling-age contours derived from 40Ar/39Ar ages of hornblende, muscovite, and biotite from granitic plutons and their country rocks show a regional pattern of younging toward the southeast. This cooling-age gradient, along with the distribution of normal faults, discontinuities in metamorphic grade, and rifting of the South Georgia basin suggest that the southernmost Appalachian crystalline rocks between the Brevard fault and the Coastal Plain unconformity were exhumed as the lower plate of an extensional detachment fault system. The Suwannee and Charleston terranes likely preserve part of the upper plate. These features represent the postorogenic collapse of the southernmost Appalachians probably along an extensive detachment fault system in the Permian-Middle Triassic. This episode of extension may have played a crucial role in thinning the continental crust to its current thickness and likely was the first stage of extension that eventually led to the breakup of Pangea and formation of the Atlantic Ocean. Metasedimentary rocks in the mid- to lower crust of exhumed continental arcs preserve information about both sedimentary provenance and metamorphic pressure-temperature paths, providing a unique perspective on the tectonic history of an arc, including margin-parallel translation and sediment-burial mechanisms. The Swakane Biotite Gneiss (Washington State, USA) and the Pelona, Orocopia, Rand, Sierra de Salinas, and related schists (PORS) (California and Arizona) represent metasedimentary rocks that were incorporated into the deep levels of North American Cordilleran arc systems. We evaluated the provenances for the sedimentary protoliths of these units by detrital zircon U-Pb and Hf-isotope analyses to assess paleogeographic reconstructions for western North America. All samples have similar Mesozoic peaks, and Proterozoic age populations (1.38 Ga and 1.6-1.8 Ga) are present in samples with maximum depositional ages younger than ca. 86 Ma. Zircon Hf-isotope results are similar for these Proterozoic populations, but the Swakane Mesozoic zircon samples reveal slight differences in comparison to PORS samples. Similar detrital zircon patterns, timing of emplacement, lithology, and structural setting suggest that these two distinct units formed at the same latitude and are consistent with recent interpretations of paleomagnetic data that indicate "moderate" (~1600 km) northward translation for the North Cascades arc. This study provides an example of how sediment provenance signatures combined with interpreted metamorphic histories can be used to track vertical displacement and horizontal translation within a complex, long-lived, convergent-margin system. Warm springs emanating from deep-reaching faults in orogenic belts with high topography and orographic precipitation attest to circulation of meteoric water through crystalline bedrock. The depth to which this circulation occurs is unclear, yet it is important for the cooling history of exhuming orogens, for the exploitation potential of orogenic geothermal systems, and for the seismicity of regional faults. The orogenic geothermal system at Grimsel Pass, Swiss Alps, is manifested by warm springs with a clear isotopic fingerprint of high-altitude meteoric recharge. Their water composition and their occurrence within a 3 Ma fossil upflow zone render them particularly favorable for estimating the temperature along the deep flow path via geochemical modeling. Because the background geotherm has remained stable at 25 °C/km and other heat sources are unavailable, the penetration depth can be derived from the deep-water temperature. We thus estimated the base of the Grimsel system to be at 230-250 °C and 9-10 km depth. We propose that deep temperatures in such systems, particularly those with normal background geotherms (<30 °C/km), have been systematically underestimated. Consequently, far more enthalpy may be accessible for geothermal energy exploitation around the upflow zones than previously thought. Further, the prevalence of recent earthquake foci at ≤10 km beneath Grimsel suggests that meteoric water is involved in the seismicity of the host faults. Models of orogens identify subduction of oceanic crust as the key mechanism leading to continental collision. Such models, based inter alia on thermobarometric and geochronological evidence preserved in high-pressure metamorphic rocks and subduction-related magmatism, have been used to explain the convergence of Europe and Adria in the Cretaceous-Cenozoic and the subsequent Alpine orogen. Here, we review the metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary record of the past 300 Ma of the Alpine orogen to show that there is no evidence of igneous activity during subduction initiation and prograde high-pressure metamorphism, leading to an ~50 Ma hiatus in magmatism, or "arc gap." The closure of rift basins forming the Piemont-Liguria ocean did not follow a classical Wadati-Benioff-type subduction. Instead, subduction initiation at passive margins allowed for the accretion of the hydrated portion of the subducting plate within an orogenic wedge as subduction of dry subcontinental lithosphere inhibited magmatism during subduction initiation and ocean closure. The crust underlying the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, known as the Sabine block, is largely unknown as far as its origin and age are concerned. We date zircons in granite xenoliths and from pyroclastic rocks from the Prairie Creek lamproite pipe that penetrates the block. Zircons from the granites show U-Pb ages ranging from 1800 to 1600 Ma, quite different from adjacent Grenville or Gondwana-affiliated blocks. This age range correlates with rocks in the Yavapai-Mazatal terrane of North America, implying that the Sabine block could be a promontory to the continental core. The ages also correlate with parts of the Amazon craton, northeast Greenland, Baltica, and Cathaysia, raising the less likely possibility of an exotic origin. Regardless, the Sabine block must have been accreted to North America before 1.4 Ga, requiring the Iapetus Ocean suture to be to the south and not extend through the Ouachita fold belt. The Taiwan orogenic belt is often treated as a steady, southward-propagating orogenic system with an essentially constant erosion rate of 4-6 mm/yr over the past 5 m.y. We present 4 new age-elevation transects from the Central Range based on 19 new and 86 previously published fission track and (U-Th)/He dates of completely reset detrital zircon and apatite grains. The age-elevation curves and thermal models imply slow cooling prior to ca. 2-1.5 Ma (at exhumation rates of ~0.1 mm/yr), an increase in exhumation rates from ca. 2-1.5 Ma to ca. 0.5 Ma (2-4 mm/yr), and possibly a further acceleration in exhumation from ca. 0.5 Ma to present (4-8 mm/yr). The tectonic and topographic history of the Himalaya-Tibet orogenic system remains controversial, with several competing models that predict different exhumation histories. Here, we present new low-temperature thermochronological data from the Mount Everest region, which, combined with thermal-kinematic landscape evolution modeling, indicate asymmetric exhumation of Mount Everest consistent with a scenario in which the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau was located >100 km farther south during the mid-Miocene. Northward plateau retreat was caused by erosional incision during the Pliocene. Our results suggest that the South Tibetan Detachment was a localized structure and that no coupling between precipitation and erosion is required for Miocene exhumation of Greater Himalayan Sequence rocks on Mount Everest. We provide model evidence for a previously unexplored positive feedback between tectonic strain and fluvial erosion by considering rock erodibility as a function of shear damage. Plastic shear strain permanently damages the upper crust within planar shear zones, providing a greater ease for detachment and transport by fluvial processes. The subsequent rapid erosion of exposed shear zones reforms the topographic stress field in a way that encourages continued accommodation of strain, a positive feedback response that becomes more prominent with greater shear damage. Based on model results and natural examples, rock strength heterogeneity plays a major role in the evolution of drainage network patterns and the capability for valley-scale strain localization in active orogens. The link between orogenic activity and foreland basin stratigraphy is well established; however, potential controls by foreland basin stratigraphy on thrust belt architecture have not been fully evaluated. Mechanical properties of typical foreland basin stratigraphic successions influence the structural development of fold-thrust belts in predictable ways. Fundamental features of foreland basins include the onset of rapid subsidence and deposition of a coarsening-upward sedimentary succession. In the lower part of this succession are fine-grained, distal foreland basin deposits. Enlargement of the orogenic wedge through frontal accretion incorporates the foreland basin strata into the thrust belt, and distal foreland basin depositional units may be preferentially exploited as a thrust detachment zone, resulting in multiple detachment levels. We propose that foreland basin stratigraphic architecture has significant influence on the structural development of thrust belts and that, by extension, processes that influence foreland basin sedimentation may ultimately influence orogenic evolution far removed in time and space. The extensional South Tibetan fault system (STFS) crops out for more than 2000 km along the length of the Himalayan range crest. Interpretations of the signifi cance of this structure in Himalayan tectonics vary. While many regard it as rooted northward beneath Tibet, with offset estimates ranging as high as >200 km, others regard it as a relatively minor, rootless structure. Such inconsistent interpretations are possible because, except for the Everest region, where glacial erosion has exposed a cross section of the STFS, there are few direct constraints on the amount of slip on this feature. Arguments for very large displacements have been based on indirect lines of evidence (e.g., geothermobarometric data) that are multiply interpretable. However, new fi eld work and remote sensing data reported here directly support the petrologic arguments for large displacements, at least in the eastern Himalaya. Near the western boundary of Bhutan, the trace of the STFS is apparently offset ~70 km across a NNE-SSW--trending graben, the Yadong cross structure. This offset has been attributed by previous authors to left-lateral slip along the Jomolhari fault system, which bounds the eastern edge of the graben. In fact, the basal structure of the STFS is not offset, but forms a regionally continuous low-angle detachment surface. The outcrop pattern of the structure, kinematic indicators in fault-related tectonites, and the lack of matchable correlative hanging wall and footwall units require a minimum displacement of ~65 km for the detachment. Such displacements are comparable with estimates for major contractional structures in the eastern Himalaya, such as the Main Central thrust system, and confirm the importance of STFS extension in the evolution of the orogenic system. Detrital cooling ages from the pro-foreland and retro-foreland basins of the European Alps record distinctive exhumation trends that correlate with orogenic wedge states inferred from thrust front propagation rates. Periods of rapid hinterland exhumation correlate with relatively slow propagation of deformation toward the foreland and are interpreted to represent subcritical wedge conditions, whereas periods of slow hinterland exhumation correlate with rapid propagation of deformation toward the foreland and indicate supercritical wedge conditions. Similar lag time trends recorded in both the pro-foreland and retro-foreland thus mimic orogenic wedge behavior and suggest that local tectonics and/or climate events do not overprint the regional signal. Analog and numerical models predict a coupling between climate and tectonics whereby erosion influences the deformation of orogens. A testable prediction from modeling studies is the decrease in width of mountain ranges as a result of increased precipitation. Here we evaluate the effect of climate on a critically tapered orogen, the central Andes, using sequentially restored, balanced cross sections through wet (15°-16°S) and dry (21°S) regions of the orogen. In these regions, tectonics, basin geometry, and style of deformation are similar, allowing us to use variations in propagation (or changes in percent shortening) to evaluate whether alongstrike changes in width and morphology are climate driven in the north. Results indicate similar total percent shortening along the northern (40%) and southern (37%) sections, suggesting that a wetter climate has not limited the width (propagation) in the north. However, comparison of early (45-25 Ma) and recent (ca. 20-0 Ma) shortening indicates that early deformation produced 45% ± 2% shortening of both sections, while recent deformation produced 41% ± 2% (north) versus 32% ± 2% (south) in the actively deforming Subandes. The latter suggests a coupling between climate and tectonics that began between ca. 19 and 8 Ma, and continues to 0 Ma, potentially limiting the width of the northern Subandes by ∼40 km. In the Miocene, the European Eastern Alps extruded laterally along orogen-scale strikeslip faults due to both extensional gravitational collapse and compressional tectonic forcing. Horizontal extension is most prominently evidenced by detachments east and west of the Tauern Window; it is commonly explained by a retreating slab beneath the Carpathian arc hundreds of kilometers east of the orogen. Horizontal compression is shown by north-south shortening in the Tauern Window and the entire Eastern Alps in response to the convergence of the Adriatic plate with Europe. It is interesting that analogue and numerical models for the Eastern Alps designed to describe the east-directed lateral extrusion have failed to explain the extensional regime in the region of the Tauern Window. Using a numerical model for planview deformation that considers internal faults, we show here that orogen-scale strike-slip faults are mechanically required to cause extension during plate convergence in the Miocene Eastern Alps. Ongoing oblique collision and flat-slab subduction of the Yakutat terrane has produced Earth's highest coastal mountain range, the Chugach-St. Elias orogen in Southeast Alaska. Massive glaciers and ice fi elds cause extensive erosion, but also limit access to rocks that allow detailed study of the orogen. Fission track and U/Pb dating of detrital zircon from glacial rivers reveal the exhumation history of the Chugach-St. Elias orogen. Orogenic development started ca. 30 Ma and pulses of exhumation occurred 20 ± 2 Ma and 11 ± 2 Ma. Differential exhumation occurred across major fault zones and the locus of exhumation shifted southward. The ca. 5 Ma cooling ages of detrital zircon in the Pliocene-Pleistocene Yakataga Formation reveal that source rock exhumation was likely associated with faulting along the ice-covered Fairweather fault-Contact fault system. In addition to the well-known Variscan and Alpine orogenic cycles, a Permian thermal event occurred in the European Alps. The geodynamic background of this event is not well understood. Here we suggest that the event is a reflection of lithospheric thinning accompanied by magmatic underplating causing partial melting of the lower crust and low-pressure—high-temperature metamorphism. The event was terminated by Early Triassic opening of the Meliata ocean and was followed by sag-stage subsidence during slow lithospheric cooling. This last stage of the evolution allowed the onset of the Mesozoic marine evolution with the orogen-wide formation of Triassic carbonate platforms well known from the Dolomites and the Northern Calcareous Alps. The combined evidence for magmatism, metamorphism, and late subsidence identifies the Permian event of the Alps as an excellent example of underplating events suggested as a cause for low-pressure–high-temperature terrains worldwide. In Phanerozoic circum-Pacific orogenic belts, most "postcollisional" S-type granites and associated high-temperature, low-pressure metamorphic complexes formed during early arc extension. The granites are part of a tripartite association consisting of (1) inboard S-type granite, (2) outboard oceanic arc, and (3) intervening, turbidite-filled backarc basin. S-type granites herald the formation of new outboard oceanic arc and extensional backarc systems, but thickening of a preexisting, sediment-dominated backarc basin is a prerequisite for their generation. In these environments, S-type plutonism is triggered by renewal of arc magmatism following thickening, when hot basaltic magmas are intruded into the thickened backarc crust once slab retreat is reestablished. With ongoing extension during retreat, the crust becomes progressively thinned, the sedimentary contribution is diminished, and the granites lose their S-type character. Such tripartite associations involving S-type granite are probably diagnostic of repeated slab-retreat episodes, and the Jurassic U.S. cordillera might be an example. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Apatite (U-Th)/He dating from the St. Elias orogen in southern Alaska illustrates a potential association between long-term denudation and glacier sliding. Cooling ages as young as 0.4 Ma (exhu mation ~4-5 mm/yr) are concentrated in a narrow band near the glacier equilibrium line altitude (ELA) front, where mean Quaternary ELA intersects the windward flank of the orogen. This band of denudation is not correlated with individual faults, structural trends, or known concentrations of precipitation, and we propose that it is produced by focused glacier sliding at or near the ELA front. This implies that long-term glacial erosion is a maximum at ELA, which corroborates model predictions that glaciers and climate can control the pattern of crust removal from orogens. Denudation rates do not covary with fluctuations in glacier size along the ELA front, suggesting that small glaciers are capable of keeping pace with incision by larger ones and tectonic rock uplift. The occurrence of strike-normal extension in mountain belts undergoing active contraction is not predicted by analytical solutions for the mechanics of purely frictional orogens. To test the idea that ductile rocks at depth might allow extensional deformation to occur in otherwise frictional and contractional orogens, we have conducted a series of analog experiments with purely frictional and layered frictional-ductile rheologies. By precisely measuring the horizontal deformation field, we have quantitatively confirmed the qualitative observation that analog frictional wedges do not extend. This is consistent with published numerical models, and is in contrast to purely viscous models that commonly display coeval extension with contraction. Our modeling also demonstrates that layered frictional-ductile models can, during active convergence, result in discrete extensional normal faulting even when only a relatively thin ductile layer is present. The resulting extension, though relatively small in magnitude compared to the active contraction, can greatly modify the final profile of a convergent orogen and can lead to the formation of a broad plateau between the pro-wedge and the retro-wedge. The Qiangtang metamorphic belt (QMB) in central Tibet is one of the largest and most recently documented high-pressure (HP) to near-ultrahigh-pressure (near-UHP) belts on Earth. Lu-Hf ages of eclogite- and blueschist-facies rocks within the QMB are 244-223 Ma, indistinguishable from the age of UHP metamorphism in the Qinling-Dabie orogen. Results of a U-Pb detrital zircon study suggest that protoliths of the QMB include upper Paleozoic Qiangtang continental margin strata and sandstones that were derived from a Paleozoic arc terrane that developed within the Paleo-Tethys Ocean to the north. We attribute QMB HP metamorphism to continental collision between the Qiangtang terrane and a Paleo- Tethys arc terrane. This collision, and the coeval South China-North China collision, may have slowed convergence between Laurasia and Gondwana-derived terranes and initiated Mediterranean-style rollback and backarc basin development within much of the remnant Paleo-Tethys Ocean realm. While the upper crustal structure of the Southern Apennines is known, lack of control on the deep structure allows competing thin-skinned and thick-skinned models of the orogen. In thin-skinned models, the detachment decouples a stack of rootless nappes from the basement. In thick-skinned models, basement is involved in the most recent phase of thrusting. To examine crustal structure, we use teleseismic data from the Calabria-Apennine-Tyrrhenian/Subduction-Accretion-Collision Network (CAT/SCAN) array in southern Italy. We use receiver functions (RF) processed into a common conversion point stack to generate images of the crust. Interpretation and correlation to geological structure are done using inversions of individual station RFs. We focus on a shallow discontinuity where P-to-S conversions occur. In the foreland, it corresponds to velocity jumps between carbonate and clastic strata with basement. A similar interpretation for the Apennines provides the most parsimonious explanation and supports a thick-skinned interpretation. In a thick-skinned reconstruction, the amount of shortening is much smaller than for a thin-skinned model. This implies considerably less Pliocene-Pleistocene shortening across the Apennines and suggests an east-southeast motion of the Calabrian arc subparallel to the southern Apennines rather than a radial expansion of the arc. A compilation of geochemical data from >50 active volcanoes where seismically defined Moho depth measurements are available, representing most volcanic arcs around the world, indicates a relation exists between crustal thickness (Moho depth) and the trace element composition of basalts. The best correlation exists for maximum light/heavy rare earth element (REE) ratios, and we use maximum Ce/Y (R2 = 0.90) to show the exponential function with increasing depth, to 50 km. Application to New Zealand, part of the eastern Gondwanan margin through much of the Phanerozoic, shows that higher Ce/Y ratios in arc basalts correspond to two periods of recognized crustal thickening, plus an additional event at ca. 240 Ma, which links New Zealand to the Gondwanide Orogeny. Conversely, low Ce/Y ratios in basalts correlate with periods of recognized extension in eastern Gondwana. Very high Ce/Y ratios in ca. 120 Ma rocks imply an unusually thickened (∼50 km) arc crust, consistent with independent geological estimates of crustal thickness at that time. The Llano uplift of central Texas, United States, exposes the core of a Mesoproterozoic orogenic belt that formed along the southern margin of Laurentia during Grenville time. A new collisional model is proposed that reconciles differences in structural stacking, apparent tectonic transport, and deformation conditions between the eastern and western portions of the uplift and explains uplift and exhumation of high-pressure eclogitic rocks, emplacement of ophiolitic rocks, and subsequent late-stage to postcollisional plutonism. Our model proposes that subduction with southward polarity resulted in collision of an exotic arc with Laurentia, emplacement of ophiolitic rocks, and telescoping of the intervening basinal sediments, followed by overriding of the arc and margin of Laurentia by a southern continent with transport toward Laurentia. The model further proposes that convergence led to subduction of the Laurentian margin, resulting in high-pressure metamorphism, but buoyancy forces due to subduction of continental crust under the southern continent resulted in uplift and retrotransport away from Laurentia, in a manner similar to that proposed for the Alpine orogeny. Slab breakoff resulted in upwelling of the asthenosphere, leading to intrusion of juvenile granitic plutons. Subduction along strike caused continued contraction that waned with time. The eastern uplift records continent-arc-continent collision, whereas the western uplift records continent-continent collision; the two regions also expose different crustal levels in the orogen. The striking similarity with Phanerozoic orogens, including emplacement of ophio lites and formation of high-pressure rocks, implies that plate tectonic processes including subduction were active prior to the Neoproterozoic. The extensional Pannonian Basin was formed in a few million years during Miocene time synchronously with contraction in the surrounding Alpine and Carpathian orogens. This system is characteristic of a class of extensional basins that form in the midst of active orogenic (mountainforming) belts. The mechanism that causes this type of geological event is enigmatic but usually has been associated with subduction. We examine a new hypothesis for intra-orogenic extensional basin formation in which gravitational spreading of previously thickened crust triggers gravitational instability of the mantle lithosphere. A basin is formed by lithospheric extension as shortening and lithospheric downwelling occur in the surrounding mountain belts. This mechanism provides a mechanically self-consistent explanation for all of the main structural features of the Pannonian-Carpathian system and presents a plausible alternative to the popular view that subduction and slab rollback have driven the development of this basin. Isotopic data from the Gurla Mandhata metamorphic core complex provide insight on the character of rocks exposed within it and permit possible correlations of these rocks to those exposed in the Himalayan thrust belt. Whole-rock Sr and Nd isotopic analyses show that rock units in the metamorphic core have isotopic signatures that correlate to those of Greater and Lesser Himalayan rocks exposed in the foreland. These data are the first to document Lesser Himalayan rocks north of the Higher Himalayan physiographic zone. When combined with previously published structural reconstructions of the Himalayan orogen, these data reveal a crustal architecture that requires significant uplift of Lesser Himalayan rocks in the hinterland with respect to their position in the foreland, a greater amount of underthrusting of the Lesser Himalayan rocks, and more shortening in the hinterland within the Tethyan Himalaya physiographic zone than currently estimated. The ∼2800-km-long Snowbird tectonic zone is one of the most controversial tectonic features of the Canadian shield. Metamorphic and in situ geochronologic data reported here reveal that a 1.9 Ga medium- to high-pressure belt extends along most of this tectonic zone. In contrast to recent interpretations, a collisional origin is indicated by the length of this metamorphic belt, tectonic thickening documented in parts of it, geological contrasts across it, and subduction-type microdiamonds within it. The Mesozoic boundary separating accreted oceanic rocks and continental North America in west-central Idaho forms a prominent right-angle bend, the origin and kinematic significance of which have had a great influence on models for the evolution of the North American Cordilleran orogen. Based on structural and geochronologic relations, we conclude that the bend in the steep crustal boundary is formed by the intersection of two shear zones with different ages. Structural fabrics of the north-striking western Idaho shear zone are overprinted by penetrative structures of the west-northwest—striking Orofino shear zone. U-Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe ages on metaplutonic rocks and late synkinematic leucocratic dikes constrain the age of deformation in the Orofino shear zone to ca. 90-70 Ma, distinctly younger than ca. 120-90 Ma magmatism and deformation within the western Idaho shear zone. The Orofino shear zone is interpreted as a southwest-vergent contractional relay structure that linked basement-cored foreland thrusts of the Middle and Southern Rocky Mountains with the deep crustal duplex of the Shuswap complex in the Canadian Rockies. Truncation ca. 90 Ma terminated Late Cretaceous margin-parallel translation of terranes along the western Idaho shear zone and required displacement to step outboard to poorly understood structures to the west. The northern Cordilleran fold-and-thrust belt in Canada and Alaska is at the boundary between the broad continental margin mobile belt and the stable North American craton. The fold-and-thrust belt is marked by several significant changes in geometry: cratonward extensions in the central Yukon Territory and northeastern Alaska are separated by marginward re-entrants. These geometric features of the Cordilleran mobile belt are controlled by relations between lithospheric strength and compressional tectonic forces developed along the continental margin. Regional magnetic anomalies indicate deep thermal and compositional characteristics that contribute to variations in crustal strength. Our detailed analysis of one such anomaly, the North Slope deep magnetic high, helps to explain the geometry of the fold-and-thrust front in northern Alaska. This large magnetic anomaly is inferred to reflect voluminous mafic magmatism in an old (Devonian?) extensional domain. The presence of massive amounts of mafic material in the lower crust implies geochemical depletion of the underlying upper mantle, which serves to strengthen the lithosphere against thermal erosion by upper mantle convection. We infer that deep-source magnetic highs are an important indicator of strong lower crust and upper mantle. Understanding uplift and exhumation in orogenesis requires integrating the effects of both climatic and tectonic forcing. Punctuated thrust activity is widely documented from field studies in a range of mountain belts. The potential for climatic forcing of thrust activity has been a subject of recent debate. Here we use a modeling approach to analyze the behavior of individual thrust units in the context of asymmetric doubly vergent thrust wedges. The model predicts that rates of surface uplift, frontal accretion, and exhumation should be punctuated on a time scale linked to thrust sheet geometry and convergence rates. We present a new, near-comprehensive survey of the variations in seismic structure across the West Australian craton at the scale of the main terrane groups. Analyzing data from distant earthquakes recorded at temporary and permanent stations located across the region, we found the best-fitting structure by modeling the conversions from P- to S-wave motion (the receiver function) that take place as the seismic energy travels upward through the lithosphere. Such methods can be used to delineate the extent of cratonic and orogenic terranes in regions where geological exposure of the surface is limited, and they provide an effective alternative to active-source seismic techniques for deep crustal targets. The seismic structure is consistent within several of the individual Archean terranes, most notably the Pilbara, Murchison, and Southern Cross. These terranes are underlain by lower crust of low seismic velocity and show a sharp seismic Moho. The structure shows significant contrasts between neighboring terranes; thus, major tectonic units have a velocity profile that is a signature of that terrane or terrane group. We infer that the seismic structure of the Archean crust and upper mantle was fixed before craton assembly and preserved through the subsequent collision and accretion of the tectonic units that formed the West Australian craton. The late Miocene-Holocene deep-water fold-and-thrust belt of offshore northwestern Borneo displays one of the most acute angles recorded for a submarine critical-taper wedge. The very low surface (1°-5°) and basal detachment (2°-5°) dips require basal pore-fluid pressures near lithostatic pressure for the wedge to propagate at such angles. In the deep-water environment, sedimentary processes act against the wedge attaining critical taper. In places of lower sedimentation rates, the fold-and-thrust belt extends to the base of the slope and dips ~1.5°-2.5°. In areas of the highest sedimentation rates (Baram Delta), the slope has a lower angle (1°) and the slope continues beyond the limit of the fold-and-thrust belt. Slope morphology changes along the margin from concave up (relatively low sedimentation rate, low shortening rate), to convex up (relatively high sedimentation rate, low shortening rate), to stepped (relatively low sedimentation rate, high shortening rate). Recent observations of cleavage patterns, strain histories, and kinematics across the Taiwan mountain belt depict systematic orogen-scale variations with respect to the synorogenic divide and suggest that the pattern of cleavage development is a predictable consequence of orogen stresses and kinematics. In Taiwan, continental crust within the collision is accreted in the prowedge facing Asia, but is advected eastward into the east-verging retrowedge, where the most deeply exhumed rocks are exposed. Wedge mechanics predict a reversal in the direction of plunge of the principal compressive stress at the topographic divide between the opposing wedges. The observation of a single cleavage in western Taiwan suggests that the cleavage in the prowedge remains stable with respect to the stress orientation. In contrast, the existence of a second crenulation cleavage in the retrowedge is evidence for an abrupt change in stress orientation and unstable buckling of preexisting prowedge fabrics. Advection of a fabric across a topographic divide in a doubly vergent wedge provides an explanation for the occurrence of cleavage fronts and fans in natural systems such as Taiwan. The kinematic evolution of the enigmatic arc-shaped southernmost Andes of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego has been a subject of debate for most of the past century. We compared the results from analog sandbox experiments with the tectonic evolution and actual configuration of the mountain chain in order to elucidate whether oroclinal bending took place during the Tertiary, or if the southernmost Andes have been a curved orogen since at least Late Cretaceous time. Experiments simulating oroclinal rotation produced strong along-strike variations in shortening and failed to account for structural data compiled from the Fuegian Andes. Results from experiments simulating an L-shaped, concave-to-foreland indenter were in agreement with the known Tertiary structural evolution of the southernmost Andes. The diachronicity of principal shortening events previously recognized in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego could only be reproduced by moving the indenter in two successive orthogonal directions: first approximately northward to form the Fuegian fold-and-thrust belt, and then approximately eastward to propagate thrusting in the Patagonian Andes. The historical superstructure-infrastructure concept (S-I) expressed contrasts in structural style and metamorphic grade between shallow and deep orogenic levels. Two-dimensional thermalmechanical models provide a quantitative explanation in terms of progressive crustal shortening and thickening (phase 1), thermal relaxation and rheological weakening (phase 2), and ductile flow at depth (phase 3). Results predict an upper-crustal superstructure, dominated by early steep structures, separated across a subhorizontal high-strain zone from a ductile infrastructure with late gently dipping structures; this is consistent with observations from the western Superior Province. These models can account for contrasts in structural style, metamorphic grade, seismic reflectivity, and age between upperand lower-crustal levels. In contrast to conventional thrust-tectonics models, the revived S-I model shows how young structures can form beneath older ones during progressive convergence, thereby encouraging reassessment of standard seismic reflection interpretations. New 40Ar/39Ar analyses from a transect across the major tectonic units of the southwest Amazon craton document the heterogeneous effects of the late Mesoproterozoic collision with the Grenville margin of North America. Basement rocks of the Amazon and adjacent Paragua cratons mostly preserve pre-Grenvillian ages (older than 1.3 Ga). Localized isotopic age resetting at 1.18–1.12 Ga is caused by Grenvillian activation of widespread, sinistral strike-slip shear zones in the Amazon basement. In the Nova Brasilândia belt between these two cratons, new 40Ar/39Ar data record cooling through 920 Ma after the granulite facies deformation of this suture zone. Regional cooling rates calculated from compiled U/Pb, 40Ar/39Ar, and Rb/Sr thermochronologic data are used to establish post-Grenvillian exhumation patterns for the southwest Amazon and the North American belt. Paleodepths calculated for 1.0 Ga along a transect of the restored 1300-km-wide belt vary from uniformly deep levels (15–30 km) exposed in North America to shallower levels (5–15 km) observed in the southwest Amazon. We interpret this difference as reflective of a change in tectonic architecture, i.e., thrust-dominated deformation in Laurentia versus strike-slip dominated deformation in the Amazon, with a commensurate variation in crustal thickness. This interpretation explains the widespread preservation of both pre-Grenvillian ages and collisional ages from the Amazon craton, in contrast with the more homogeneous array of cooling ages from the North American Grenville Province marking the postorogenic extensional collapse of an overthickened crust. At the end of the Miocene, the European Alps ceased outward expansion, and tectonic uplift and exhumation shifted into the orogen interior. This shift is consistent with a change from orogenic construction to orogenic destruction, reflecting an increase in the ratio of erosional flux to accretionary flux. The coincidence of this change with an increase in sediment yield from the Alps suggests a climate-driven increase in erosional flux. The timing of deformation and sediment release from the southern Alps indicates that the tectonic change occurred synchronous with the last phase of the Messinian salinity crisis. We attribute the increase in erosional flux to a climatic shift to wetter conditions throughout Europe, likely augmented by the base-level fall that occurred during the Mediterranean dessication. Aluminum-26 and beryllium-10 surface exposure dating on cut-and-fill river-terrace surfaces from the lower Sutlej Valley (northwest Himalaya) documents the close link between Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) oscillations and intervals of enhanced fluvial incision. During the early Holocene ISM optimum, precipitation was enhanced and reached far into the internal parts of the orogen. The amplified sediment flux from these usually dry but glaciated areas caused alluviation of downstream valleys up to 120 m above present grade at ca. 9.9 k.y. B.P. Terrace formation (i.e., incision) in the coarse deposits occurred during century-long weak ISM phases that resulted in reduced moisture availability and most likely in lower sediment flux. We estimate strain rates of three parameters that describe the buildup of a tectonic wedge (Jura front, France). The uplift rate on frontal ramps decreases with the slip on the ramps and the coeval increase of vertical loads. The migration rate of the tip of the sole thrust appears to be episodic and faster than the translation rate of the backstop. The long-term tilting rate appears to be constant, whereas the short-term rate is slightly slower. We propose a model of wedge growth that proceeds without underthrusting. In a prefractured medium, the wedge would activate the frontal ramp with a weaker frictional resistance than the forward décollement. An instantaneous forward jump of the deformation front would occur when the resistance on the ramp equals the resistance of the frontal décollement. The Andes, the world's second highest orogenic belt, were generated by the Cenozoic tectonic shortening of the South American plate margin overriding the subducting Nazca plate. We use a coupled thermomechanical numerical modeling technique to identify factors controlling the intensity of the tectonic shortening. From the modeling, we infer that the most important factor was accelerated westward drift of the South American plate; changes in the subduction rate were less important. Other important factors are crustal structure of the overriding plate and shear coupling at the plates' interface. The model with a thick (40-45 km at 30 Ma) South American crust and relatively high friction coefficient (0.05) at the Nazca-South American interface generates >300 km of tectonic shortening during 30-35 m.y. and replicates the crustal structure and evolution of the high central Andes. The model with an initially thinner (<40 km) continental crust and lower friction coefficient (<0.015) results in <40 km of South American plate shortening, replicating the situation in the southern Andes. Our modeling also demonstrates the important role of the processes leading to mechanical weakening of the overriding plate during tectonic shortening, such as lithospheric delamination, triggered by the gabbro-eclogite transformation in the thickened continental lower crust, and mechanical failure of the sediment cover at the shield margin. Extension of overthickened continental crust is commonly characterized by an early core complex stage of extension followed by a later stage of crustal-scale rigid block faulting. These two stages are clearly recognized during the extensional destruction of the Alpine orogen in northeast Corsica, where rigid block faulting overprinting core complex formation eventually led to crustal separation and the formation of a new oceanic backarc basin (the Ligurian Sea). Here we investigate the geodynamic evolution of continental extension by using a novel, fully coupled thermomechanical numerical model of the continental crust. We consider that the dynamic evolution is governed by fault weakening, which is generated by the evolution of the natural-state variables (i.e., pressure, deviatoric stress, temperature, and strain rate) and their associated energy fluxes. Our results show the appearance of a detachment layer that controls the initial separation of the brittle crust on characteristic listric faults, and a core complex formation that is exhuming strongly deformed rocks of the detachment zone and relatively undeformed crustal cores. This process is followed by a transitional period, characterized by an apparent tectonic quiescence, in which deformation is not localized and energy stored in the upper crust is transferred downward and causes self-organized mobilization of the lower crust. The contribution of asthenospheric diapirs to the exhumation of orogenic lherzolites from the mantle to Earth's surface is a major issue in the evolution of orogenic belts. Detailed maps of the trajectories of the foliation in the Carratraca massifs of the Ronda peridotites (Betic Cordillera, southern Spain) provide evidence for a narrow mantle diapir that was formed in early Miocene time. When set in its geologic and petrologic context, this diapir documents the injection of hot asthenosphere into older and cooler lithospheric mantle, possibly in response to the delamination of the lithosphere that had been thickened during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic convergence of the African and Iberian plates from Cretaceous time onward. A lithospheric model scaled for density and viscosity was shortened obliquely in front of an indenter whose shape and orientation match those of the South Alpine indenter. Deformation was initially localized into subparallel sets of conjugate transpressive thrusts. These structures evolved into folds, which were strongly amplified and converged closer together during ongoing shortening, finally forming a series of tight antiforms. At the same time, this tightly folded structure locally accommodated significant orogen-parallel extension, attaining 100% in front of the leading edge of the indenter, but only 15% on the scale of the entire model. The internal architecture and fault pattern of the model in map view are very similar to those of the Tauern Window in the Eastern Alps, emphasizing the importance of localization of folding and shortening rather than orogen-parallel extension for its formation. Diamond was synthesized at high temperature and pressure in a Walker-style multianvil apparatus from various supercritical C-O-H-rich fluid compositional systems. Depending on the type and amount of impurities added to the system, diamonds of varying morphology and bearing solid oxide inclusions were found within the run product. These characteristics bear a striking resemblance to metamorphic microdiamonds recovered from the Kokchetav massif, Kazakhstan; these natural diamonds share morphological traits with our synthesized diamonds, and both the natural and synthesized diamonds contain similar solid oxide inclusions. Our data favor formation of Kokchetav diamonds via crystallization from a supercritical C-O-H fluid, rather than from carbonate or carbonatite melt, as others have suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The East African—Antarctic orogen is one of the largest orogenic belts on the planet. It resulted from the collision of various parts of proto—East and West Gondwana during late Neoproterozoic—early Paleozoic time (between 650 and 500 Ma). We propose that the southern part of this Himalayan-type orogen can be interpreted in terms of a lateral-escape tectonic model. Modern Gondwana reconstructions show that the southern part of the East African— Antarctic orogen can best be reassembled when a number of microplates (the Falkland, Ellsworth-Haag, and Filchner blocks) are positioned between southern Africa and East Antarctica. This microplate assemblage is unusual. The microplates probably represent shear-zone—bounded blocks, produced by tectonic translation during lateral escape, similar to those currently evolving in Southeast Asia. One of the escape-related shear zones is exposed as the 20-km-wide Heimefront transpression zone in western Dronning Maud Land. Coats Land, a crustal block within the orogen, probably represents a block of older crust that was not subjected to tectonometamorphic reworking ca, 500 Ma by lateral tectonic escape. The southern part of the orogen is also typified by very large volumes of late-tectonic A2-type granitoids, intruded ca. 530–490 Ma, probably as a consequence of delamination of the orogenic root and the subsequent influx of hot asthenospheric mantle during tectonic escape. Erosional unroofing of the orogen is documented by the remnants of originally massive areas covered by Cambrian— Ordovician molasse-type sedimentary rocks throughout Africa, Arabia, and Antarctica, testifying to the past extent and size of this largest of orogens. Newly released reflection seismic and borehole data, combined with sedimentological, provenance, and biostratigraphic data from Upper Cretaceous—Paleocene strata in the proximal part of the Cordilleran foreland-basin system in Utah, establish the nature of tectonic controls on stratigraphic sequences in the proximal to distal foreland basin. During Campanian time, coarse-grained sand and gravel were derived from the internally shortening Charleston-Nebo salient of the Sevier thrust belt. A rapid, regional Campanian progradational event in the distal foreland basin (>200 km from the thrust belt in >8 m.y.) can be tied directly to active thrust-generated growth structures and an influx of quartzose detritus derived from the Charleston-Nebo salient. Exhumed high-pressure rocks from the Caledonian root zone in Norway provide analogues for processes occurring today under southern Tibet, allowing large-scale geophysical observations, from gravity and earthquakes, to be linked with the mechanical properties of metastable rocks under high mountains. Metastability is essential for the survival of thick mountain roots and, hence, of high mountains and is in turn controlled by water. If water is absent, dry granulite, formed from earlier melting episodes, is both stable and strong and likely to survive in the eclogite stability field of deep root zones for hundreds of million years. But if hydrous fluid is introduced, the transformation of granulite to eclogite is relatively rapid and accompanied by a dramatic loss of strength. In Norway, this transformation was initiated by water infiltration along fractures formed by earthquakes. At depth, many fold-and-thrust belts are composed of a gently dipping, basal thrust fault and steeply dipping, shallower splay faults that terminate beneath folds at the surface. Movement on these buried faults is difficult to observe, but synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry has imaged slip on at least 600 km² of the Shahdad basal-thrust and splay-fault network in southeast Iran. Approximately 70 mm of thrust motion on the 8°-dipping Shahdad basal thrust occurred 8–30 km to the east of the 14 March 1998 Fandoqa earthquake (Mw = 6.6) that involved 1.6 m of oblique (strike slip and normal slip) displacement on a steeply dipping fault. That earthquake transferred stress to the Shahdad basal thrust and associated splays, triggering slip either immediately or in the following six months. Modeling shows that, to produce the observed surface deformation, the Shahdad faults must have accommodated a nearly complete release of the shear stress increase. This could be due to either low friction on the faults or deformation throughout a wedge of material that is everywhere close to failure.
