We use continuous measurements of GPS sites from across the Rio Grande Rift, Great Plains, and Colorado Plateau to estimate present-day surface velocities and strain rates. Velocity gradients from five east-west profiles suggest an average of ~1.2 nanostrains/yr east-west extensional strain rate across these three physiographic provinces. The extensional deformation is not concentrated in a narrow zone centered on the Rio Grande Rift but rather is distributed broadly from the western edge of the Colorado Plateau well into the western Great Plains. This unexpected pattern of broadly distributed deformation at the surface has important implications for our understanding of how low strain-rate deformation within continental interiors is accommodated. Inconsistencies between regional seismicity and block tectonic models, the recent recognition of the Bering plate, and the availability of global positioning system data motivated a large-scale kinematic analysis of Alaska and western Canada. We provide a synoptic view of the neotectonics of the region through kinematic modeling of the longterm strain rate and velocity field constrained by geologic and geophysical observations. Our results provide evidence that a wide zone of diffuse deformation defines the boundaries between the North America, Pacific, and Bering plates, and that the relative motion between these plates may be the source for much of the modern deformation. We examine active deformation of the region surrounding the eastern South Caspian Sea using a combination of seismic, geological, geodetic, and geomorphological data. Global positioning system (GPS) velocities indicate a westward component of motion of the South Caspian basin, relative to Eurasia and central Iran. We identify major zones of shear (the Ashkabad and Shahrud fault zones) that accommodate this westward extrusion on either side of the South Caspian block. Estimates of total strike-slip motion could, at present-day slip rates derived from GPS observations, be achieved in ∼10 m.y. Therefore, the northwest extrusion of the South Caspian region, which is accommodated by subduction beneath the North Caspian region (stable Eurasia) along the Apsheron-Balkan sill, may also date from that time. This suggests that the onset of subduction may be older than previous estimates (ranging from 1.8 to 5.5 Ma). The recent dramatic increase in seismic anisotropy and surface global positioning system (GPS) data for central Asia permits a comprehensive examination of the mantle's role in mountain building. A joint analysis of 178 shear-wave-splitting and 2000 GPS observations using a new technique reveals that the crust and lithospheric mantle deform coherently, arguing for crust-mantle mechanical coupling during deformation. The observed spatial variations in anisotropy reflect the large-scale pattern of lithospheric deformation, as well as a change in deformational style from simple shear on the Tibetan Plateau transitioning to pure shear in surrounding regions. Ongoing plate convergence between India and Eurasia provides a natural laboratory for studying the dynamics of continental collision, a first-order precess in the evolution of continents, regional climate, and natural hazards. In southeastern Tibet, the fast directions of seismic anisotropy determined using shear-wave splitting analysis correlate with the surficial geology including major sutures and shear zones and with the surface strain derived from the global positioning system velocity field. These observations are consistent with a clockwise rotation of material around the eastern Himalayan syntaxis and suggest coherent distributed lithospheric deformation beneath much of southeastern Tibet. At the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau we observe a sharp transition in mantle anisotropy with a change in fast directions to a consistent E-W direction and a clockwise rotation of the surface velocity, surface strain field, and fault network toward Burma. Around the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, the coincidence between structural crustal features, surface strain, and mantle anisotropy suggests that the deformation in the lithosphere is mechanically coupled across the crust-mantle interface and that the lower crust is sufficiently strong to transmit stress. At the southeastern margin of the plateau in Vunnan province, a change in orientation between mantle anisotropy and surface strain suggests a change in the relationship between crustal and mantle deformation. Lateral variations in boundary conditions and rheological properties of the lithosphere play an important role in the geodynamic evolution of the Himalayan orogen and Tibetan Plateau and require the development of three-dimensional models that incorporate lateral heterogeneity. Surface deformation in Morocco, derived from five years of global positioning system (GPS) survey observations of a 22-station network, four continuously recording GPS (CGPS) stations, and four International GNSS Service (IGS) stations in Iberia, indicates roughly southward motion (∼3 mm/yr) of the Rif Mountains, Morocco, relative to stable Africa. Motion of the Rif is approximately normal to the direction of Africa-Eurasia relative motion, which is predominantly strike slip, and results in shortening of the Rif and subsequent crustal extension of the adjacent Atboran Sea region. The sense, and the N-S asymmetry of the observed deformation (i.e., no evidence for north-directed shortening in the Betic Mountains north of the Alboran Sea) cannot be easily explained in terms of crustal plate interactions, suggesting that dynamic processes below the crust are driving the recent geologic evolution of the western Mediterranean. Using a combination of GPS-measured horizontal velocities of 200 sites and 115,487 range-change rates determined with the permanent scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) method in the San Francisco Bay Area, we resolve vertical motions in the region at sub-mm/yr precision. The highest displacement rates are due to nontectonic processes, such as active landslides, subsidence and rebound over aquifers, and rapid settling of unconsolidated sediments along the bay margins. Residual displacement rates are determined by removing the contribution of the GPS-derived horizontal velocity field from the InSAR range-change rates. To isolate vertical tectonic rates, we use only those InSAR measurements made on material that was not Quaternary substrate, which is susceptible to nontectonic and seasonally varying ground motions. The InSAR residuals indicate significant uplift over the southern foothills of the active Mount Diablo anticlinorium, the Mission Hills stepover region of the Hayward and Calaveras faults, and the central and southern Santa Cruz Mountains located along a restraining bend of the San Andreas fault. In the western Great Basin of North America, a system of dextral faults accommodates 15%–25% of the Pacific-North American plate motion. The northern Walker Lane in northwest Nevada and northeast California occupies the northern terminus of this system. This young evolving part of the plate boundary offers insight into how strike-slip fault systems develop and may reflect the birth of a transform fault. A belt of overlapping, left. stepping dextral faults dominates the northern Walker Lane. Offset segments of a W-trending Oligocene paleovalley suggest ∼20–30 km of cumulative dextral slip beginning ca. 9–3 Ma. The inferred long-term slip rate of ∼2–10 mm/yr is compatible with global positioning system observations of the current strain field. We interpret the left-stepping faults as macroscopic Riedel shears developing above a nascent lithospheric-scale transform fault. The strike-slip faults end in arrays of ∼N-striking normal faults, suggesting that dextral shear diffuses into extension in the Great Basin. Coeval extension and dextral shear have induced slight counterclockwise fault-block rotations, which may ultimately rotate Riedel shears toward the main shear zone at depth, thus facilitating development of a throughgoing strike-slip fault. New continuous and differential global positioning system (GPS) measurements of recent slip rates and 30 yr alignment-array offsets from the central creeping segment of the San Andreas fault yield a maximum right-lateral slip rate of 25 ± 1 mm/yr. This slip rate is 20% slower than the 30 mm/yr slip rate accepted for this segment of the fault and 35% slower than the 39 mm/yr slip rate predicted between the Sierra Nevada-Great Valley block and the Pacific plate. New continuous GPS measurements between pairs of sites that flank the creeping segment at intersite distances of 1.0 km and 70 km give relative fault-parallel slip rates of 28 ± 2 and 30 ± 2 mm/yr, respectively. These observations indicate that right-lateral deformation rates increase with distance from the fault. Possible explanations for the gradient observed in the geodetic data are elastic strain accumulation along the creeping segment or significant distributed deformation on off-fault structures. We have integrated in situ stress, neotectonic, and Global Positioning System data to investigate the complex interactions among the South American, Caribbean, and Nazca plates and the Costa Rica-Panama microplate and to examine different seismotectonic models that have been proposed for the region. The resulting data set was used to generate an integrated stress map of the region that shows that the stress field in northern South America varies systematically in both orientation and relative magnitude. In the southwestern part of the study area, the Ecuadorian Andes stress province exhibits strong EW compression resulting from the subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American plate. In the North Andes stress province, the observed NW-SE compression may result from the convergence between the Caribbean and the South American plates and/ or the negative buoyancy of the already subducted Caribbean plate beneath northwestern South America. Possible convergence between the Costa Rica-Panama microplate with respect to northwestern South America may also be a source of compression in this region. In north and northeastern Venezuela, normal and strike-slip faulting with a NE-SW direction of extension characterizes the San Sebastian-El Pilar stress province. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
