A sequence of radar echo maps can visually show the motion and variation trends of the echo area, making it a common tool for precipitation forecasting. The spatiotemporal context reveals the correlations of variation trends among different parts within the echo area. This paper proposes a novel precipitation forecasting model, ISTC-SA-MIM (Interactive Spatiotemporal Context Learning with Self-Attention and Memory in Memory), based on the MIM. Leveraging the spatiotemporal interactions and self-attention mechanism of the ISTC-SA structure, the proposed model effectively captures both long-term and short-term spatiotemporal contexts. By memorizing the spatiotemporal context and non-stationary information, ISTC-SA-MIM can accurately predict the motion and variation trends of the echo area. Radar echo data from the Qingdao station are collected as the dataset to evaluate the commonly used spatiotemporal models and ISTC-SA-MIM. Overdeepenings are erosional landforms, cut by glaciers into bedrock in basins and valleys. Overdeepening is the glaciological and geomorphological process that produces these landforms. The overdeepening process is important because it has the potential to influence the response of ice masses to climatic changes. In this paper, we analyze topographic and bathymetric digital elevation models to examine several hundred glacial overdeepenings in Labrador, Canada. We investigate controls upon the location and depth of overdeepenings. Our analyses show that the location of overdeepenings correlate strongly with confluences of glacial valleys and, importantly, that the correlation is strongest where confluence geometry requires the speed-up of ice-flow due to change in valley cross-sectional area. Further, we find that the magnitude of ice-flow speed-up correlates with depth of overdeepenings only for confluences situated in or near major geological fault-zones. Our findings therefore support the hypothesis that overdeepening can be initiated by an increase in ice velocity. Further, we conclude that overdeepening is most efficacious where fractured bedrock enables efficient quarrying. In summary, we find that the primary control upon the location of overdeepenings arises from confluences of glacial valleys due to ice speeding up at these locations, and that the depth of overdeepenings are controlled by rock mass strength. This paper presents the results of applying GIS–MCA–AHP integrated model in landslide susceptibility assessment for warning of dangerous areas in the Tan Uyen district of Vietnam. The main research method is a Multi-criteria assessment that is based on a hierarchical analysis process and a combination of the GIS spatial analysis model. Research results have shown four main groups of factors causing landslides including hydrogeological factors, topographic and geomorphological factors, surface cover factors and human impact factors. The landslide susceptibility assessment map has identified 22.69% of the area (204.96 km2) with a high and very high risk of landslides. Based on the overlapping population distribution map and landslide susceptibility assessment map. It has been shown that residential areas, including 723 households located at a high risk of landslides need to be moved to a safe area. Information about the state of the Arctic sea ice is becoming increasingly important. This paper describes an approach for automatic retrieval of daily thin sea ice thickness maps around Svalbard. The algorithm uses thermal satellite imagery from MODIS to estimate the surface temperature of the ice and further uses a thermal model of the ice surface to estimate the thickness of the sea ice. The approach is usable for thin sea ice, up to ca. 50 cm thick, during cold weather (freezing) conditions and without cloud cover present. The algorithm is compared with helicopter-borne electromagnetic ice thickness measurements. The comparison yields increasing root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) for thicker ice. The lowest RMSD found is 8.7 cm for ice thickness in the range 10 cm < hi ≤ 20 cm. The highest RMSD found is 25.2 cm for ice thickness in the range 30 cm < hi ≤ 40 cm. The bias shows no such trend, and the overall bias is found to be −5.5 cm. The results show that this is a promising approach, allowing monitoring of thin sea ice thickness at relatively higher spatial resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we use a numerical glacier-climate model, a detailed photogrammetric survey and lichenometry to reconstruct small palaeoglaciers on Ben Nevis and surrounding mountains in western Scotland. These glaciers would have been sustained under a climate where the mean annual air temperature was –1.0°C to –2.0°C compared to present-day values either with or without a decrease in precipitation amount of 10–30%. Historical meteorological data show that these air temperatures were reached on Ben Nevis in the latter part of the 19th century. Although we have no data on the age of these small glaciers, palaeoclimate reconstructions suggest that such conditions almost certainly existed several times during the Holocene in Scotland; the last time being the Little Ice Age of the 16th to 19th Centuries. We argue from this that small Scottish glaciers may have been able to develop in high sheltered cirques at many times during the Holocene and that the glacial history of Scotland therefore requires revision. A valley floor rock glacier in Nautárdalur, eastern Tröllaskagi, northern Iceland, has been investigated since the 1970s. Adjacent valleys are also examined as mountain landsystems. The methodology identifies 'landform elements' (features evident on slopes) on transects that can be identified and mapped from Google Earth imagery. Transects can be compared to show similarities and differences between slopes and valleys and can be used to trace debris and ice/snow flow paths within landsystems. The paper confirms that a glacier ice core is present throughout the Nautárdalur rock glacier. Traces of glacier activity can be found in some neighbouring small valleys but where rock glaciers are not present. Previous field observations, when coupled to current Google Earth imagery, indicate glacier ice formation and deformation over the past 200 years. The quantities and timing of weathered debris from headwall cliffs were sufficient to partly cover small glaciers, thus forming rock glaciers in some, but not all, valleys. The landsystem and transect approach thus indicate glacier origins for the rock glaciers identified. No evidence for 'permafrost creep' in scree slopes that might produce valley-side rock glaciers has been found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
