Ionospheric effects of Mount Pinatubo volcanic eruption in June 1991 were recorded on 1-minute interval soundings made by stations north of the volcano. Disturbances characterized by quasi-periodic wavelike trains were detected. They were attributed to gravity waves generated by the eruption, and its characteristics were determined. We search for similar ionospheric disturbances caused by volcanic eruptions in North and South America, based on hourly F2 critical frequency (foF2) and F layer virtual height (h’F) data. The study was carried out for quiet magnetic activity levels. All eruptions reached the Pinatubo intensity. A decrease of foF2 and of its amplitude of variation, and an increase of h’F in relation to their values during the day before and after the eruption were detected in some cases. In other cases the disturbance was detected for only one parameter, or for none. The absence of disturbances in the hourly records could be due to the lack of coincidence between the maximum departures of the parameters from the normal situation, and the recording time of the parameter. The observed disturbances are correlated with the eruption intensity.

A search for a relationship between tropical stratosphere temperature anomalies at 10 hPa (~30 km), during 1964-1996 and the F10.7 cm solar flux has been carried out. The long-term trend and the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation influence over four seasonal and the annual temperature series were removed. The linear correlation coefficients, r, between temperature and F10.7 for the five series fall between 0.02 and 0.31, which suggests that the association between temperature and solar cycle is weak. However, when the data of each series are grouped according to solar cycle, temperature as a function of F10.7 shows a non-random behavior similar to a hysteresis loop. The sense of rotation, axis and area of a hysteresis loop are different for each solar cycle. The time shift between temperature and solar flux increases from cycle 20 to 22. The correlation between temperature and F10.7 becomes progressively lower from cycle 20 to 22. This suggests that the stratospheric temperature is determined not only by the solar flux, but also by parameters such as ozone and CO2, and feedback mechanisms between them.

Chen (1992) reports an association between the variance of the F2 layer critical frequency, foF2var, and the quasi-biennial oscillation, QBO, of the monthly mean zonal wind in the equatorial stratosphere (MMZW) at 40 mb, with data of March and September at Okinawa (26ºN, 128ºE). We search for such an association in other locations. Monthly-hourly foF2 data (between 12 and 19 LT) for the period 1957-1989 from Tucumán (27ºS; 65ºW), at the southern equatorial anomaly crest at the magnetic equator (Huancayo,12ºS; 75ºW), and in high latitude (Slough, 51ºN; 0.6ºW) were analyzed. The correlation coefficient between foF2var and MMZW is 0.05, 0.16 and 0.20 for Tucumán, Huancayo and Slough respectively, suggesting that there is no association. However, the correlation coefficient for Okinawa (r=0.65), and for Tucumán in the period 1958-1968 (r=0.67), is high. We do not rule out the possibility that the QBO of MMZW modulates the ionosphere at the crests of the equatorial anomaly. We look for an explanation of the loss of correlation for Tucumán after 1968. Spectral analysis, for all three stations, shows a significant high-frequency oscillation in foF2var (2.5-3.3 years) which is very close but not coincident with the QBO present in MMZW.

Se han realizado numerosos estudios sobre los efectos ionosféricos de la erupción volcánica del Monte Pinatubo de junio de 1991. Basados en intervalos de 1 minuto de sondaje realizado en estaciones ubicadas al norte del volcán, se han detectado perturbaciones ionosféricas caracterizadas por trenes de onda cuasi-periódicas. Las ondas ionosféricas fueron atribuidas a ondas gravitatorias generadas por la fuerte erupción volcánica del Monte Pinatubo y sus características fueron determinadas. En el presente trabajo se busca detectar perturbaciones ionosféricas causadas por erupciones volcánicas en América, basados en datos horarios de la frecuencia crítica de la capa F2 (foF2) y la altura virtual de la capa F (h’F). El estudio fue realizado para periodos de nivel de actividad magnética tranquila. Ninguna de las erupciones aquí analizadas alcanza la intensidad del Pinatubo. Sin embargo, un decrecimiento de foF2 y de su amplitud de variación y un aumento de h’F en relación con sus valores durante el día previo y el posterior al de la erupción fueron detectados en algunos casos. En otros, la perturbación fue detectada solamente en uno de los parámetros analizados. La ausencia de perturbaciones en registros horarios podría deberse a la falta de coincidencia de los máximos apartamientos de los valores respecto a una situación de normalidad con el momento del registro de los parámetros ionosféricos. En este trabajo se busca una relación entre la anomalía de la temperatura estratosférica tropical a 10 hPa (~30 km), durante el período 1964-1996 y el flujo solar F10.7 cm. De las cuatro series estacionales y de la serie anual, se filtró la tendencia de largo plazo y la influencia de la oscilación de casi dos años (QBO). El coeficiente de correlación lineal r entre la temperatura y F10.7 para cada una de las cinco series está entre 0.02 y 0.31, lo que llevaría a pensar que la asociación entre la temperatura y el ciclo solar es débil. Sin embargo, si los datos de cada serie son agrupados de acuerdo con el ciclo solar al que pertenecen, la temperatura en función de F10.7 presenta un comportamiento no aleatorio, similar a una histéresis. El sentido de rotación, el eje y el área de cada histéresis varía según el ciclo solar. El área, proporcional al desfasaje entre la temperatura y el F10.7, se hace más grande desde el ciclo 20 al 22. Para la serie anual r es 0.83 en el ciclo 20, decreciendo a 0.62 y 0.16 para los ciclos 21 y 22 respectivamente. La correlación entre la temperatura y F10.7 se hace progresivamente menos lineal desde el ciclo 20 al 22. Esto podría explicarse porque la temperatura estratosférica depende no sólo del flujo solar, sino de parámetros como O3 y CO2 y de los mecanismos de feedback entre ellos. A pesar de la pérdida de significancia estadística, el análisis de los datos agrupados por ciclo solar permitiría detectar cambios progresivos en una dada asociación. doi: https://doi.org/10.22201/igeof.00167169p.2004.43.1.207

Total solar irradiance (TSI) may present the same long-term variation as the solar cycle length (SCL), corresponding to the Gleissberg cycle. It is expected that when SCL decrease, TSI increase. The analysis of stratospheric, ionospheric and solar data suggest that UV and EUV solar radiation have long-term variations that do not depend on the sunspot number Rz. The part of the UV and EUV solar flux associated to SCL, called UV(SCL) y EUV(SCL), varies in such a way that when SCL decreases, this radiation decreases. Direct indices of EUV and UV available data support this hypothesis. Through ionospheric data we estimated that EUV (SCL) is 1% and 2% of the total EUV solar flux, for a short and a long solar cycle respectively.

Hay indicios de que la irradiancia solar total (TSI) podría presentar las mismas variaciones a largo plazo que la longitud del ciclo (SCL). Esta variación corresponde a la periodicidad de 80-90 años, llamada el ciclo de Gleissberg. Se espera que cuando SCL disminuya, TSI aumente. En el presente trabajo se analizan datos estratosféricos, ionosféricos y solares de los cuales se infiere que las radiaciones UV y EUV presentan variaciones a largo plazo que no dependen del número de manchas solares Rz. Llamamos a estas variaciones de la irradiancia UV(SCL) y EUV(SCL), ya que ambas parecen tener periodicidades a largo plazo como la de SCL. En este caso se espera que cuando SCL decrezca, UV(SCL) y EUV (SCL) también decrezcan. Datos de índices directos de la radiación UV y EUV apoyan esta hipótesis.
