• Soil texture effect in temperate grassland region of China is examined. • A strong inverse soil texture effect on vegetation is evidenced. • Loam soil can be used as a benchmark to quantify effect of various textured soils. • Precipitation threshold for inverse texture effect increases with soil coarseness. The inverse texture effect of soil on vegetation has been reported in a few arid regions, but no information is available on the vast Chinese temperate grassland. In addition, no consistent criteria and approaches have been used to classify soil texture groups, determine the precipitation threshold (P θ) below which the inverse texture effect occurs, and quantify the effect size (Z), which has limited the generalization of the rules of the soil texture effect in different ecosystems. We analyzed the soil texture effect on vegetation using the remotely sensed vegetation data (MODIS/NDVI) and the Chinese soil profile texture data at 6851 sites in temperate grasslands of China. We found, first, a strong inverse texture effect, i.e., a higher NDVI on coarse- (>50 % sand) than fine-textured soil in low precipitation areas, and P θ was variable with annual precipitation and averaged 260 mm in the region. Second, we proposed a novel method to use the loam soil as a benchmark against which to quantify the effect of various textured soils, and determine P θ as the point on precipitation gradient where the soil texture effect shift from positive to negative or vice versa. As such, P θ decreased with soil coarseness, and increased with precipitation; and the texture effect decreased from positive to negative for sandy soils, whereas it increased from negative to positive for silt or clay soils, on the gradient of precipitation increase. Our results provide new insights into the relations of vegetation pattern and dynamics with precipitation and soil texture, and a method for quantifying and comparing soil texture effect across ecosystem types. Abstract Local topography and elevation gradients can exert important influences on soil formation processes such as elemental migration, mineral weathering, and soil organic matter (SOM) accumulation, yet these influences remain insufficiently investigated to date, particularly in surface soils of subtropical monsoonal regions. Here, we report on an investigation of a series of surface soils collected from four different topographic locations across the subalpine Dajiuhu Critical Zone Observatory (CZO), representing hillslope (planar), swale and river channel (convergent), and bulge (divergent) microtopographic sites. Evidence provided by rare-earth element (REE) patterns, immobile element ratios, clay-mineral compositions, and particle-size distributions suggests that these soils have rather uniform parent materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that secondary clay minerals in these soils are complex, being dominated by various interstratified clays. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy shows similar patterns among the swale, bulge, and river-channel soils that differ from those of the hillslope soils. Most soils at convergent sites with poor drainage contain more smectitic clays (interstratified illite/smectite and chlorite/smectite) and less vermiculitic clays (hydroxyl-interlayered vermiculite and interstratified illite/hydroxyl-interlayered vermiculite), and exhibit weaker chemical weathering and fewer elemental losses than those from non-convergent sites. The diversity of clay types can be ascribed to the complexity and heterogeneity, in particular of pH and hydrology, in these soil environments. Across the range of microtopographic sites investigated here, elemental migration and chemical weathering are generally coupled, with greater elemental losses associated with more intense chemical weathering. Soil organic carbon (SOC) content generally increases at higher elevations, which is attributable to lower temperatures and a consequent reduction of microbial remineralization, and under more reducing soil water conditions. Though influenced by eolian dust, variations in Fe/Mn, Ce anomaly, and C org /P can reflect redox conditions of different soils. SOC retention is also closely associated with soil redox status, with more reducing conditions being more conducive to SOC preservation. However, due to limitations in quantifying gully erosion rate, origin of erosion could be hardly distinguished. This study aimed to figure out this problem by developing a soil erosion estimation method based on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) monitoring techniques. Specifically, 18 gullies with different terrain characteristics were selected across typical erosion regions in southeast China, and UAV low-altitude photography, weather station monitoring, and field sampling investigation were conducted from 2020 to 2021to monitor their total erosion volume (VE), collapse volume (VC), proportion of collapse volume to total erosion volume (VC%), morphological parameters (e.g., total length of scour channels, L; erosion area, A; residual volume, V; and hypsometric integral) and soil-environmental factors (rainfall, temperature, and soil properties). It showed that 92.65 % of VE was resulted from colluvial deposits, attributing to the variation of L. Additionally, VC quantifying the amount of gravity erosion was determined by soil clay content in the upper catchment (Clay1). And percentage of VC to VE, characterized by VC%, possessed a significant linear correlation with HI (R2 = 0.571, p < 0.001). Moreover, regional differences of VE and VC was mainly attributed to soil clay content in colluvial deposits (Clay3) and HI. Collectively, clay content in the gully system inhibited gully erosion, while all the morphologic factors facilitated the development of gully erosion. • The contents of (heavy) metals in ML soils were higher than those in YB and DX soils. • ML soils contained more chlorite in clay minerals/soils than YB and DX soils. • The hydroxyl groups with hydrogen bonds were mainly existed in ML soils. • Molecular soil chemistry could affect the accumulation of heavy metals in karst area. Heavy metals with high average background values in soils from karst regions of China have been reported previously. However, the accumulation mechanism of heavy metals in karst soils derived from different parent materials related to the molecular soil chemistry is still unclear. In this study, six soil cores (0–100 cm) from three locations were collected from Hengxian County, a typical karst basin of Guangxi, among which soils of Maling (ML1 and ML2) were derived from the weathering and leaching residues of carbonate rocks, and soils of Yunbiao (YB1 and YB2) and Dengxu (DX1 and DX2) were mainly developed from deposits of Quaternary formations. Soil heavy metal quantification, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) analysis were combined to study the contents of heavy metals, mineral compositions, and functional assignments in the karst soils. The results showed that the total concentrations of As, Cr, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the soils from ML exceeded the risk screening values from the agricultural soil quality standard in China (GB15618-2018), while the contents in the soils from YB and DX were below the risk screening values. The mineral components were significantly different in soils and their clay minerals. ML soils contained more Fe and Mn oxides than YB and DX soils. Furthermore, it was interesting to find extensive existence of chlorite in ML soils (36.73%-39.07%) and their clay minerals (90.49%-90.97%). While illite was the dominant mineral in YB and DX clay fractions (75.08%-100%) and its percentages decreased to 6.06%-35.23% in the soil samples. In addition, ML soils contained the hydroxyl groups with hydrogen bonds (v O-H: 3523, 3450, and 3378 cm−1) and the hydroxyl groups without hydrogen bonds (v O-H: 3698, 3623 cm−1), while YB and DX soils only had the hydroxyl groups without hydrogen bonds (v O-H: 3695, 3622 cm−1). Our study indicated that the accumulation of heavy metals in karst soils from different parent materials was significantly attributed to their molecular soil chemistry. For instance, the higher contents of Fe-Mn oxides and more reactive v O-H (3523, 3450, and 3378 cm−1) and v Si-O (1000 cm−1) assignments could contribute to the higher contents of heavy metals in ML soils compared to the soils from YB and DX. • Performance of 11 existing soil particle density estimating models were evaluated. • The modified Adams and some regression models gave reasonable estimates. • Particle density of subtropical soils was more affected by texture rather than SOM. • Particle density of subtropical soils was simply a linear function of clay content. Soil particle density (ρ s) is a basic soil physical property which is essential for soil pore volume estimation and sediment source discrimination. The measurement of soil ρ s is labor intensive and time-consuming. Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) have been developed for estimating ρ s from readily available soil properties during the past decades. Existing PTFs are developed mainly based on soil datasets covering wide ranges of soil organic matter (SOM) contents. For soils from subtropical regions with low SOM values the accuracy of previous PTFs remains unknown. In this study we evaluated the performance of existing ρ s PTFs by comparing model estimates to measurements of 175 soils from a subtropical region in China. The investigated soils had relatively low SOM contents (mostly<0.02 g g−1) and covered texture ranges from coarse sand to clayey soils. The Adams-based PTFs performed poorly, while the modified Adams PTFs and several simple linear or multiple regression PTFs produced relatively accurate ρ s estimates for the 175 soils with root mean square errors (RMSEs) around 0.05 g cm−3 and mean biases within ± 0.03 g cm−3. Further multiple regressions indicated that the ρ s of subtropical soils was simply a negative linear function of clay content. Despite conflicting several early reports, an independent dataset showed that the proposed linear model provided accurate ρ s estimates for soils with low SOM contents from subtropical regions with a RMSE of 0.030 g cm−3 and mean bias of −0.013 g cm−3. Abstract: The red clay soils which are widespread in China are known to be highly sensitive to drought during the dry season but the origin of this high sensitivity to drought remains unclear. Several red clay soils were selected in the Hunan province for study. We studied their basic physico-chemical properties and clay mineralogy, their structure and shrinkage properties, as well as their water retention properties. Results show that the amount of water available between −330 and −15,000hPa water potential is consistent with that recorded in many other clay soils from different parts of the world and thus cannot explain the high sensitivity of the red clay soils to drought. This high sensitivity to drought might be related to the high proportion of poorly available water which was characterized by the amount of available water between −3,300 and −15,000hPa water potential. Comparison with clay soils located in different parts of the world and for which the sensitivity to drought was not identified showed that this proportion of poorly available water is indeed much higher in the red clay soils studied than in clay soils representing a large range of both clay content and mineralogy. This specific behavior of the red clay soils studied is thought to be related to the history of their parent materials: these materials are continental sediments which may have been submitted to great hydric stress, thus leading to strongly consolidated soils with consequences such as a high proportion of poorly available water, strong aggregation and weak shrinkage properties. • Current estimate of shrubland soil carbon density was higher than that for all Chinese terrestrial ecosystems. • Precipitation explained more variation of soil carbon than temperature. • Soil type was a key regulator of soil carbon. • Belowground biomass appears to provide the primary source of shrubland soil carbon. The soils of shrublands are important for organic carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems, but geographical patterns and environmental controls of soil organic carbon (SOC) remain largely understudied compared to other terrestrial ecosystems, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of terrestrial ecosystem carbon budgets. Here, we quantified SOC density (SOCD) and its potential determinants based on a comprehensive dataset with a consistent stratified random sampling of extensive soil profiles down to the parent material or to one meter depth across 1211 sites across China. Our up-to-date estimate of SOCD in Chinese shrublands is an average of 8.36 kg m−2, and ca. 43% of SOC is stored in the upper 20 cm relative to the one meter top soil, which is higher than estimates for shrublands globally. We also observed that SOCD was positively related to shrubland biomass and more so with belowground biomass. Furthermore, SOCD was positively related to mean annual precipitation (MAP), soil total nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), clay and silt percent, but decreased with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT). Dark felty soils stored the highest SOCD and frigid desert soils stored the lowest. Soil total nitrogen (N), MAP, soil type, MAT, and belowground biomass, soil clay, and pH were the best predictors of total SOCD in Chinese shrublands. We concluded that Chinese shrubland soils store the lowest density of organic carbon so far recorded compared to forests and grasslands, and that the vertical distribution of SOC in Chinese shrublands was much shallower. While both climate (in particular MAP) and soil total N exerted dominant control over geographical patterns of SOCD across Chinese shrublands, soil type also played a significant role. Our study also emphasizes this key role of edaphic variables in determining the SOCD of shrublands and that they should be better incorporated into large-scale assessments of SOC dynamics. Our study extends existing work conducted in forest and grasslands and provides the most up-to-date knowledge on benchmark values for SOCD in Chinese shrublands, with important implications for predicting the fate of C stored in shrubland soils in response to climate change.
