Exploring overland flow resistance and sediment delivery capacity under different landscape vegetation conditions is critical for better understanding hydrodynamic mechanisms of soil erosion processes and hydrological connectivity on hillslopes. To evaluate flow resistance relations and sediment transport for landscape vegetation coverage and combinate effect of vegetation patches, field simulated rainfall experiments were conducted using a series of overland runoff and sediment transport rates in 3 m (L) × 2 m (W) experimental plots with coverages of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60% and 90% in a uniformly distributed condition and composited flow paths of different patches (horizonal path, vertical path, random patches and S-shaped path) in the same coverage (40% and 60%). The runoff rates for the grassland with coverages of 20–90% were decreased by 19.3–61.4% (P < 0.05), and the sediment concentrations were reduced by 81.7–97.8% (P < 0.05) compared to the bare land. The Darcy-Weisbach resistance coefficient doubled and the stream power declined by 60.0% when grassland coverage increases to 90%. The runoff rates varied little among the conditions of horizontal, vertical, random and S-shaped flow paths at the coverage of 60%, while the rate apparently reduced by 34.1% (P < 0.05) when the vertical flow path became horizontal under the same coverage of 40%. The sediments for poorly connected flow paths could reduce sediment >90% either on high-coverage or low-coverage grassland. Our field experiments confirmed that the increase of vegetation coverage and the combination of landscape patches could significantly reduce runoff rates, sediment yields and flow velocities, increase surface roughness, promote flow resistance and diminish hydraulic shear stress and the stream power. The poorly-connected paths (horizontal and random) exhibited a stronger flow resistance and weaker sediment transport capacity than the well-connected paths (vertical and S-shaped). • The runoff and sediment are considerably decreased with the coverage increasing. • The flow resistance to runoff is enhanced by poorly connected flow paths. • The sediment transport is significantly influenced by the different flow paths. • The sediments for poorly connected flow paths could reduce sediment >90%. Abstract: In recent years there has been a focus on the impact of changing climate on rainfall and storm patterns both globally and in Australia with research directed to examine how the global hydrological cycle will respond to climate change. This study investigates the effect of different rainfall patterns on erosion and sediment transport rates in a small study catchment in the Northern Territory, Australia. There have been several studies of the effect of climate change on rainfall patterns in the study area with projections indicating an increase in storm activity. Therefore it is important that the impact of this variability be assessed in terms of catchment hydrology, geomorphology and sediment transport and erosion rates. In this study a numerical model of erosion and deposition (CAESAR) is used to assess several different rainfall scenarios over a 1000 year modelled period. The results show that at the end of a 1000 year modelled period the simulated catchments are not geomorphologically or hydrologically different from one another. The model results reveal that increased rainfall amount and intensity increases sediment transport rates but predicted annual sediment output from the models was variable and non-linear but within the range of measured field data for the catchment and region. The study provides a sensitivity analysis of both initial soil particle size distribution used in the erosion model and rainfall on long-term erosion rates and catchment sediment transport. Abstract: Significant portions of the global soil organic carbon (SOC) pool must reside on sloping terrains where the spatial distribution of SOC reflects the combined effects of geomorphic processes and biological C cycling. Using a newly developed soil C mass balance model that explicitly includes soil production and sediment transport, we investigated the relative roles of sediment production/transport vs. biological C cycling in creating the observed spatial patterns of SOC storage within two grass-covered hillslopes in California. The study sites differed in bedrock geology, climate, and erosion rates. Measurements of SOC, soil texture, plant C inputs, and soil thickness were combined with topographic surveys and published soil erosion and production rates in the analysis. Soil thickness was found to be the key control on SOC storage, and soil thickness is balance between soil production and curvature-dependent erosional losses. Additionally, topographically varying rates of plant C inputs, decomposition rates, and SOC erosional losses or depositional inputs were found to only partially explain the observed SOC storage patterns. We used the measured relationships between SOC storage, soil thickness, and topographic curvature to create SOC storage maps of the two watersheds. At both sites, about 70% of the hillslope SOC is stored in depositional areas that are susceptible to episodic mass wasting. At the drier site, there was a larger SOC storage despite the lower soil C % because the clay-rich bedrock resulted in the development of relatively thick soils for a given slope curvature. We conclude that the geomorphic processes driving soil thickness provide fundamental mechanisms that control the spatial SOC patterns on vegetated hillslopes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Efficient intervention to control soil erosion in rural tropical landscapes requires accurate models for predicting the spatial location and intensity of degradation. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has commonly been applied for spatial erosion risk assessment in the tropics, but has rarely been validated using ground observations of soil degradation. As with any empirical model, application in new regions requires calibration before results are used for decision support. We evaluated USLE effectiveness for predicting erosion in a small watershed in western Kenya based on 420 georeferenced ground observations of ordinal erosion class (three categories) systematically collected from throughout the basin. Relativized model factors were parameterized using standard remote assessment methods based on interpolated spatial data layers. Inference of degradation status at cultivated sites was estimated by calibration to near infrared diffuse reflectance spectra obtained from sampled soils; diagnostic models based on spectra produced validation accuracies of 78% for three categories. Association between USLE predicted risk and observed erosion, estimated using mixed effects logistic regression to control for within-site variability, correctly classified only 38% of sites into three degradation classes and model sensitivity for delineating regions of severe degradation was only 28%. Graphical modeling was used to identify those USLE risk factors that were conditionally associated with observed degradation, and an ordinal logistic regression model, employing only these factors was developed. This alternative model, which allowed statistical flexibility in estimating effect direction and strength, correctly predicted ordinal degradation class at 54% of field sites, with 55% sensitivity for the severe degradation class. This result suggests a critical need for efficient ground-based sampling schemes to be used in conjunction with flexible statistical models based on USLE factors for future investments in erosion risk assessment in the tropics. Agricultural practices dominate over climatic variability in determining temporal variability in dust blowing on cropland in the USA. Farming operations that increase wind erosion and dust emissions include plowing, leveling beds, planting, weeding, seeding, fertilizing, mowing, cutting, baling, spreading compost or herbicides and burning fields. Methods of controlling sediment loss include planting windbreaks and special crops to alter wind flow; retaining plant residue after harvesting; tilling soil to bury erodible particles, create aggregates that resist entrainment, and increase surface roughness; improving farm equipment; and stabilizing soil surfaces using water or commercial products. Government programs prescribe air quality standards, provide education programs, and cost-share and incentive payments to assist farmers in controlling erosion and dust production. Problems continue because farmers do not consider wind erosion a significant problem. Dust events have nevertheless decreased in some areas, indicating that improved management practices may be effective where accepted by farmers. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A novel experimental protocol was used to characterize interrill erosion processes in both detachment-limiting and transport-limiting regimes. Small soil columns under tiny rocks marked with red crosses in the photo indicated that raindrop-impacted sheet flow seemed capable of detaching soil in the detachment-limiting regime probably because of the turbulence caused by raindrop impact. Raindrop-driven and flow-driven sediment transport were quantified for the first time. Stream power and a multiplicative empirical equation could be used to predict interrill sediment delivery for all erosion regimes precluding the need to develop different sets of predictive equations for each regime. • Raindrop-impacted sheet flow seems capable of detaching soil in interrill erosion. • A novel protocol was proposed to partition raindrop-driven and flow-driven transport. • Stream power and an empirical Eq. were best predictors for interrill sediment discharge. • Both equations can predict sediment discharge for all interrill erosion regimes. Detachment and transport processes of interrill soil erosion are not yet fully understood and quantified due to their complexity. Understanding these processes and their interaction is essential to developing effective interrill erosion prediction models. Thus, the objectives are to (1) identify detachment-limiting and transport-limiting regimes by comparing measured total soil splash with total sediment load of flow wash, (2) estimate relative importance of raindrop-driven and flow-driven transports under selected flow conditions using a novel experimental protocol, and (3) test widely used erosion equations for use in both detachment-limiting and transport-limiting regimes under the experimental conditions never before used. Sediment discharge and raindrop splash were separately collected from two plots with a 2.5-cm gap between them. Three rainfall intensities of 60, 90, and 120 mm h−1 were applied to three slopes of 9, 18, and 27% under two cover treatments of screen and tarp. Screen cover is to simulate crop canopy for dissipating raindrop energy, which is to control upslope sediment inflow by reducing raindrop detachment without modifying runoff rates. Tarp cover is to control both water and sediment inflows by varying slope length. Results showed that total raindrop splash in the entire plot during an event was less than total flow wash in the screen treatment, indicating detachment-limiting scenarios. However, total raindrop splash was greater (less) than total wash at the 9% (27%) slope in the tarp treatment, indicating transport-limiting (detachment-limiting) cases. The results indicated that raindrop-impacted flow might be able to detach soil in some cases. This finding runs counter to the common wisdom that soil detachment in interrill erosion is solely caused by raindrop impact. If raindrop-impacted flow can detach soil, the determination of limiting process by direct comparison between splash and wash loads seemed overly simplistic. Raindrop-driven transport was estimated for the first time by a means of dissipating raindrop impact energy in this study. Raindrop-driven transport was found to increase with rainfall intensity and slope gradients. Stream power and an empirical multiplication-of–factor equation performed well in predicting interrill sediment delivery under all erosion regimes, suggesting that it is unnecessary to develop distinct predictive equations for different interrill erosion regimes.
