Abstract

The effective population size ([N.sub.c]) of human chromosomes is calculated from linkage disequilibrium (LD) data. This method provides a [N.sub.c] estimate that is lower than previously published estimates, my be due to bottlenecks in human population size that occurred -10,000 to 200,000 years ago.

Abstract

Research has been conducted on linkage disequilibrium between polymorphic, densely spaced genetic markers containing historical population size information. The authors have proposed a multilocus measure of linkage disequilibrium, the chromosome segment homozygosity which is less variable than r (super)2 linkage disequilibrium measure and is a valuble statistic for inferring population histories from haplotype data.
