Historically, the positioning of technology and expertise has been an antithesis to girls and women. Much literature has focused on understanding and responding to the perceived differences between boys' and girls' access to, use of, and understanding of various forms of technology. In a recent qualitative study I conducted, eight teenaged technological experts (three of whom were girls) were observed and interviewed about their use of home computers and understanding of technological expertise. In regard to this heterogeneous New Zealand group, the data suggested that, although the trajectories toward technological expertise were gendered, gender did not limit the teenage girls in their acquisition of expertise. This article explores and challenges dichotomous debates about technology, gender, expertise, and then focuses on the understandings of computers as a subject in schools and as a future career. Through this discussion, the article demonstrates that the participants were aware of the gendered stereotypes surrounding girls and technology, yet dismissed them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study poses the question of whether and under what conditions the Internet is or is not an empowering tool for women Internet users in Bangladesh. The main focus of the study is on those women who, academically or professionally, are not associated with technology, and hence, we turn our gaze on home-based women Internet users, who by defi nition, belong to the elite of society. The study is based on the concept of empowerment in terms of agency. In-depth interviews were conducted with 16 participants. The aim of the research was to attain information on women's use of the Internet, what they understand by empowerment, and to fi nd out whether their use of the Internet contributes in any way to their empowerment. The study shows that women are using the Internet for many interesting purposes, including giving the fi rst glimpse of a newborn child to distant family members and expanding business worldwide. According to their defi nition of empowerment, women respondents believe that their use of the Internet is bringing positive changes to their lives. This assists in achieving empowerment, they noted. The article presents the views of Ulf Mellstrom, professor Lulea University of Technology in Sweden, on the employment of women in the computer industry in the U.S. and Malaysia. Mellstrom mentions that around 60 percent of working women in Malaysia are employed in the computer industry which is much higher when compared to 24 percent in the U.S. Mellstrom further mentions that employment of women in the technology industry has brought economic and social development in Malaysia

It notes the focus of the study is on women and technology and gender relations issues as well as its impact on the society. It also mentions that the topics to be focused on the studies include the women's cultures and societies, institutional training and individuality. It further states that the series could be written from different approaches and reflects topics including women's studies and public policy.
