Abstract

In recent decades, electrochemical water splitting has caught researcher’s attention for cost effective and green way to meet world’s energy requirement. In present work, rod structured hierarchical cerium oxide/C derived from metal organic framework (MOF) electrocatalyst was synthesized via hydrothermal route directly grown on nickel foam (NF) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH solution. The fabricated electrocatalysts were characterized via different analytical techniques to analyze the morphology, crystallinity and oxidation states. The electrochemical performances of the synthesized materials were investigated exhibiting outstanding OER performances, with low over potential of 297 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm2. The electrocatalyst also attains low Tafel slope (46 mV/dec) provides the way of electron transfer with long term stability (1000 cyclic voltammetry cycles and 15 h) chronoamperometry. These all results suggest that cerium oxide derived from MOF could be used as substitution for noble metal catalysts to develop promising, new and active electrocatalyst.

Abstract

Hydrogen production by electrocatalytic water splitting is of supreme significance for revolving the energy crisis at hand, and developing highly efficient, robust and cost-effective electrocatalyst materials is a challenging task on the way. Herein, we present unique three-dimensional (3D) ultrathin cobalt telluride nanoflakes (CoTe-NF) as single electrocatalyst with exceptionally high bifunctional activity both for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The hydrothermally synthesized CoTe material exhibits nanoscale and highly porous structural morphology and characterized by various techniques. For OER, the CoTe 3D electrode demonstrates a low onset potential of 1.44 V vs RHE with Tafel slope value of 66 mV dec−1 indicating a proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism and well-balanced kinetics. On the other hand, the electrocatalyst also executes HER at low onset potential of 0.07 V vs RHE with a modest Tafel slope of 143 mV dec−1. The materials also showed excellent stability. This work may also reveal valuable insights for developing cost-effective, efficient and low overpotential single electrocatalyst executing overall water splitting using 3D architecture Co-chalcogenide precursors posing a great alternative to noble-metals derived materials.

Abstract

[Display omitted] • Hydrothermal treatment was employed for the synthesis of ZrTe. • ZrTe deposited on carbon cloth (CC) perform well for OER. • ZrTe/CC exhibits lower overpotential of 294 mV and smaller Tafel slope of 71 mV dec-1. • The high performance of ZrTe/CC was also confirmed via the density functional theory (DFT). Next-generation fuels are produced via electrochemical water splitting technology, and energy conversion processes can be improved by fabricating high-performance oxygen evolution (OER) electrocatalysts. Among all types of electrocatalysts, alternative, cheap, and high-performance OER catalysts are the metal tellurides. Here in the present report, the novel ZrTe has directly grown on carbon cloth (CC) and outperforms OER due to its 3D shell-like structure, high conductivity, and porous nature. Hydrothermal conditions are employed to promote an anion-exchange process that leads to zirconium tellurium nanostructure from synthesized tellurium ions and hydroxide of the zirconium hexagonal nanosheets. The electrochemical measurements are performed using modified electrodes, and are tested in the alkaline environment using cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and a constant potential chronoamperometry (CA). The ZrTe/CC resulted in a lower overpotential of 294 mV with a smaller Tafel slope of 71 mV dec−1 and high stability of 45 h towards OER because of its unique shape resulting in large electrochemical active zones and more active sites without any binding agent. Additionally, the present study also validates that ZrTe/CC hybrid is more active towards OER via the density functional theory (DFT) and theoretical calculations, as our findings show that it is possible to produce multi-metal telluride-based materials that can be exceptionally efficient and stable electrocatalyst for OER, and also in future applications.
