The article analyzes the change and adaptation process of miners who became agricultural settlers on the coast of Hermosillo. All of them had been unemployed because of the closure of the copper mine in Pilares, Sonora, in 1949. The methodological perspective applied instruments of social and cultural history with concepts of memory studies. It is possible to identify a fractured identity through the broken projections for the future, forcing settlers to re-elaborate their life stories. The study involved work with orality, which resulted in some limitations that had to be solved with contrast of documentary and historiographic sources. The visibility of a community with a strong presence in the social imagination of Sonora defined the originality of the study, concluding further that there is a pilgrim cultural identity that was formed outside the mining space but with symbolic elements of it. There is a small number of transborder students who reside in Mexico but go to school in the United States. Less than 2.5 percent of students residing in border cities such as Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez or Nogales, are transborder students. Pupils born in Mexico that go to school in the United states represent less than 1 percent of the student population in all educational levels. Country of birth, having parents that are international commuters, and household income are elements that enable or limit transborder membership. This study analyzes the changes in two cross-border processes: employment and giving birth in the United States among the northern border populations of Mexico between 2000 and 2010. Various statistical methods are used to analyze the trends and the changes in the socioeconomic profiles of those who perform these practices. While the numbers of cross-border workers dropped, cross-border births increased; people with higher levels of education became increasingly represented in both categories. This article studies the marketing and sales of used clothing at the border between Bolivia and Brazil. The clothes cross through several countries via various forms of transportation, undergoing processes of smuggling, reuse, and wardrobe redefinition. At the end of the 20th century, the used clothing market acquired major importance through the involvement of North American and European nongovernmental organizations in collecting these goods in the form of donations to then send to South American countries, where the garments are remarketed. The used clothes take long voyages to get to Chilean ports, and then journey by train and other means of transportation toward Bolivia's eastern border with Brazil. Puerto Quijarro, Bolivia, and Corumbá, Brazil, represent an encounter of cultural and commercial exchange where smuggling and the buying and selling of used clothes are part of the cities' day-to-day engagement. This research analyzes the conurbation process of two Peruvian cities on the border with Ecuador: Zarumilla and Aguas verdes. This article studies how different processes and phenomena at local, national, international, and global scales influence the socioeconomic dynamics of borders and shape the urban landscape and residents' ties with cities on the other side of the border. There is a strong cross-border demographic and socioeconomic dynamic between Tijuana and San Diego; job opportunities in San Diego have brought it a growing population of Mexican origin. These two cities' interrelated economies bring about changes in the population and economic activity. This article examines the economic context from 1970 to 2010, including key events such as the Border Industrialization Program, the Simpson-Rodino Act, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the 2008 f inancial crisis. Tijuana's main employer is manufacturing, while in San Diego services and commerce are the main employers for workers of Mexican origin, who are increasing their participation in the professional services sector. The border is a place of encounter for geopolitical and literary accounts as well as historiographical and anthropological ones, but also is, like the doors guarded by the god Janus, a location where the dichotomy between control and integration--the paradox of globalization-- is apparent. All this may allow an informal measurement of relations between neighbors. This article will discuss the implementation, over 30 years, of border controls at the Chilean-Bolivian frontier through the deployment of one of the most aggressive policies seen in teichopolitics: mine-laying that resulted in a virtual wall between both countries.
