The introduction and epilogue of 'La Chatelaine de Vergi' does not follow the medieval tradition of giving the moral of the story in a didactic frame. Instead, the frame is simplistic and self-referential. Failing to address or conceal the moral of the work in a framing device can be considered a defense against simplistic interpretation. This technique may also have been a rebellion on the part of the author against the predominance of didactic literature in 13th-century France.

The life of St Martin of Tours by the forgotten Tourangeau writer Pean Gatineaus offers striking evidence of the liberation of octosyllabic verse from the line or couplet. Pean's work is compared with two near contemporaries that are Gautier de Coinci and the anonymous author of the first Vie des Peres, who also wrote verse narratives composed of pious tales and miracles stories.
