The torsional fatigue behaviour of circumferentially notched specimens made of austenitic stainless steel, SUS316L, and carbon steel, SGV410, characterized by different notch root radii has been recently investigated by Tanaka. In that contribution, it was observed that the total fatigue life of the austenitic stainless steel increases with increasing stress concentration factor for a given applied nominal shear stress amplitude. By using the electrical potential drop method, Tanaka observed that the crack nucleation life was reduced with increasing stress concentration, on the other hand the crack propagation life increased. The experimental fatigue results, originally expressed in terms of nominal shear stress amplitude, have been reanalysed by means of the local strain energy density (SED) averaged over a control volume having radius R0 surrounding the notch tip. To exclude all extrinsic effects acting during the fatigue crack propagation phase, such as sliding contact and/or friction between fracture surfaces, crack initiation life has been considered in the present work. In the original paper, initiation life was defined in correspondence of a 0.1÷0.4-mm-deep crack. The control radius R0 for fatigue strength assessment of notched components, thought of as a material property, has been estimated by imposing the constancy of the averaged SED for both smooth and cracked specimens at NA = 2 million loading cycles.&nbsp

The linear elastic analysis of homogeneous, isotropic cracked bodies is a Twentieth Century development. It was recognised that the crack tip stress field is a singularity, but it was not until the introduction of the essentially two dimensional stress intensity factor concept in 1957 that widespread application to practical engineering problems became possible. The existence of three dimensional corner point effects in the vicinity of a corner point where a crack front intersects a free surface was investigated in the late 1970s: it was found that modes II and III cannot exist in isolation. The existence of one of these modes always induces the other. An approximate solution for corner point singularities by Bažant and Estenssoro explained some features of corner point effects but there were various paradoxes and inconsistencies. In an attempt to explain these a study was carried out on the coupled in-plane fracture mode induced by a nominal anti-plane (mode III) loading applied to plates and discs weakened by a straight crack. The results derived from a large bulk of finite element models showed clearly that Bažant and Estenssoro’s analysis is incomplete. Some of the results of the study are summarised, together with some recent results for a disc under in-plane shear loading. On the basis of these results, and a mathematical argument, the results suggest that the stress field in the vicinity of a corner point is the sum of two singularities: one due to stress intensity factors and the other due to an as yet undetermined corner point singularity.

The fatigue behaviour of circumferentially notched specimens made of titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, has been analysed. To investigate the notch effect on the fatigue strength, pure bending, pure torsion and multiaxial bending-torsion fatigue tests have been carried out on specimens characterized by two different root radii, namely 0.1 and 4 mm. Crack nucleation and subsequent propagation have been accurately monitored by using the direct current potential drop (DCPD) technique. Based on the results obtained from the potential drop technique, the crack initiation life has been defined in correspondence of a relative potential drop increase ?V/?V0 equal to 1%, and it has been used as failure criterion. Doing so, the effect of extrinsic mechanisms operating during crack propagation phase, such as sliding contact, friction and meshing between fracture surfaces, is expected to be reduced. The experimental fatigue test results have been re-analysed by using the local strain energy density (SED) averaged over a structural volume having radius R0 and surrounding the notch tip. The present paper investigates the multiaxial fatigue strength of sharp V-notched components made of titanium grade 5 alloy (Ti-6Al-4V). Axisymmetric notched specimens have been tested under combined tension and torsion fatigue loadings, both proportional and non-proportional, taking into account different nominal load ratios (R = -1 and 0). All tested samples have a notch root radius about equal to 0.1 mm, a notch depth of 6 mm and an opening angle of 90 degrees. The fatigue results obtained by applying multiaxial loadings are discussed together with those related to pure tension and pure torsion experimental fatigue tests, carried out on both smooth and notched specimens at load ratios R ranging between -3 and 0.5. Altogether, more than 250 fatigue results (19 S-N curves) are examined, first on the basis of nominal stress amplitudes referred to the net area and secondly by means of the strain energy density averaged over a control volume embracing the V-notch tip. The effect of the loading mode on the control volume size has been analysed, highlighting a wide difference in the notch sensitivity of the considered material under tension and torsion loadings. Accordingly, the control radius of the considered titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) is found to be strongly affected by the loading mode. In this work, a link between the averaged strain energy density (SED) approach and the peak stress method in the case of cracks subjected to mixed mode (I+II) loading has been investigated. Some closed-form expressions of the strain energy density, averaged in a volume of radius R0, as function of the stress intensity factors are provided for plane strain conditions under mixed mode I+II loadings. On the basis of the peak stress method (PSM) some expressions useful to estimate the mode I and mode II stress intensity factors (SIFs) have been recently derived. These relationships take advantage of the elastic peak stresses from FE analyses carried out by using a given mesh pattern where the element size and type are kept constants. The evaluation of the SIFs from a numerical analysis of the local stress field usually requires very refined meshes and then large computational effort. The usefulness of the PSM-based expressions is that (i) only the elastic peak stresses numerically evaluated at the crack tip are needed and not a set of stress–distance data; (ii) the employed meshes are rather coarse if compared to those necessary for the evaluation of the whole local stress field. By substituting the PSM-based relationships in the closed-form expressions of the averaged SED it appears that the latter can be directly estimated by means of the elastic peak stresses evaluated at the crack tip. Several FE analyses have been carried out on cracked plates subjected to tension loading considering different geometrical combinations, varying the length 2a and the inclination ? of the crack (i.e. the mode mixity) as well as the size d of the adopted finite elements, with the aim to evaluate the local SED and the elastic peak stress components ?peak and ?peak. In all cases the numerical values of the SED derived from the FE analyses have been compared with those analytically obtained by using the expressions for the SED based on the elastic peak stresses, in order to verify the range of applicability of the proposed relationships.

The existence of three-dimensional effects at cracks has been known for many years, but understanding has been limited, and for some situations still is. Understanding improved when the existence of corner point singularities and their implications became known. Increasingly powerful computers made it possible to investigate three-dimensional effects numerically in detail. Despite increased understanding, threedimensional effects are sometimes ignored in situations where they may be important. The purpose of the present contribution is to review the study carried out by the same authors in some recent investigations, in which a coupled fracture mode generated by anti-plane loading of a straight through-the-thickness crack in linear elastic discs and plates has been analysed by means of accurate 3D finite element (FE) models. The results obtained from the highly accurate finite element analyses have improved understanding of the behaviour of through cracked components under anti-plane loading. The influence of plate bending is increasingly important as the thickness decreases. It appears that a new field parameter, probably a singularity, is needed to describe the stresses at the free surfaces. Discussion on whether KIII tends to zero or infinity as a corner point is approached is futile because KIII is meaningless at a corner point. The intensity of the local stress and strain state through the thickness of the cracked components has been evaluated by using the strain energy density (SED) averaged over a control volume embracing the crack tip. The SED has been considered as a parameter able to control fracture in some previous contributions and can easily take into account also coupled three-dimensional effects. Calculation of the SED shows that the position of the maximum SED in the discs case is a function of the thickness. In the plates case instead the position of the maximum SED is independent of plate thickness, contrary to disc results.

The multiaxial fatigue strength of severely notched titanium grade 5 alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) is investigated. Experimental tests under combined tension and torsion loading, both in-phase and out-of-phase, have been carried out on axisymmetric V-notched specimens considering different nominal load ratios (R = -1, 0). All specimens are characterized by a notch tip radius less than 0.1 mm, a notch depth of 6 mm and a notch opening angle equal to 90 degrees. The experimental data from multiaxial tests are compared with those from pure tension and pure torsion tests on un-notched and notched specimens, carried out at load ratio ranging from R = -3 to R = 0.5. In total, more than 160 new fatigue data are examined, first in terms of nominal stress amplitudes referred to the net area and then in terms of the local strain energy density averaged over a control volume surrounding the V-notch tip. The dependence of the control radius on the loading mode is analysed showing a very different notch sensitivity for tension and torsion. For the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V, the control volume is found to be strongly dependent on the loading mode.
