Meta-analysis was used to summarize the research results on the growth response of understory white spruce to release from overstory aspen from different studies available from published and unpublished sources. The data were screened for the suitability for meta-analysis. Treatment effect sizes were calculated using response ratio from mean cumulative increments of released and control trees since release in height, diameter, and volume and modeled using a polynomial mixed effect regression procedure. Predictor variables include linear, quadratic, and cubic components of three independent variables — initial tree height, number of years after release, and residual basal area at release — and their linear interactions. Models with a reasonable predictive power were developed for height, diameter, and volume response, but no significant model was identified for survival. The models developed in this study can be applied to predict the growth response of understory white spruce to release, based on the growth of unreleased control trees, initial tree height, residual basal area at release, and time since release. An operational field trial was established to compare the efficacy and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss.) tolerance of three alternative glyphosate formulations to Vision®, Canada's originally registered forestry formulation. The trial was done at operational scale (minimum treatment unit 7 ha) using helicopter application of all products. The tested alternatives included two new generic formulations, recently registered for forestry in Canada (Glyfos—Forza® and Vantage®), and one widely used formulation in the United States (Accord®). All four formulations provided greater than 90% control of bluejoint reedgrass (Calamagrostis canadensis (Michx.) Beauv.) through 23 months post-treatment (p > 0.27). Assessed over the same period, the three Canadian formulations provided equivalent white spruce tolerance (p > 0.10), with seedlings exhibiting only minor, non-lethal herbicide injury. Accord®, not registered for use in Canada, consistently provided the best crop tolerance, but differences were only statistically significant 11 months post-treatment (p = 0.10). The results suggest that foresters may choose among the glyphosate formulations available in Canada without concern for product-related differences in efficacy and white spruce tolerance. Twelve Alberta forest regeneration blocks, situated on representative white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) — trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) boreal mixedwood sites, planted to white spruce, and operationally released with glyphosate herbicide, were surveyed in the fall of 2002. Stand structure and composition were quantified and compared for treated and untreated portions of each block. The Mixedwood Growth Model (MGM, Department of Renewable Resources, University of Alberta) was used to project these stands over a 100-year horizon and to model the outcomes of several additional silvicultural treatments that could be applied to these blocks. A single release treatment provided 17% and 43% gains in planted white spruce height and stem diameter, respectively, an average of five years after treatment. Treatment shifted stands from being deciduous-dominated, with only 12% conifer basal area, to more than 75% conifer basal area, increasing conifer volumes per hectare nearly three-fold, but retaining conifer-deciduous mixture. Model projections suggest that these stands will produce similar total volumes over an 80-year rotation and that conifer release essentially trades deciduous volume for conifer volume, the degree of release dictating the extent to which this trade-off takes place. A single conifer release treatment led to an average simulated mature stand that contains 21% deciduous basal area, likely meeting mixedwood rather than conifer regeneration criteria. Model simulations of additional silvicultural interventions in these stands suggested that a variety of options exist to satisfy a range of stand or landscape management objectives for spruce-aspen mixedwoods, all within a relatively fixed volume production envelope. A clearer understanding of how early stand conditions translate into stand and landscape management objectives seems prerequisite to solving management conflicts on boreal mixedwood sites. An experiment to investigate techniques for establishing white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss) in boreal Ontario mixedwood was begun in 1985 in Oates Twp. Eight 25-tree plots were established in each of nine treatments: three mechanical site preparation treatments (none, disk-trenching, and toothed-blading) in combination with three kinds of chemical weed control (none, Velpar L® at the time of planting, and Vision® during the second growing season). The experiment was repeated the following year in the adjacent township of Oswald. The mechanical treatments were applied as planned, but the herbicide treatments deviated somewhat from the plan. Fifth-year results were reported in this journal in 1995. In the eighth growing season, a ground-spray release treatment with Vision® was applied to four randomly selected 25-tree plots in each original treatment. Performance of white spruce after 13 growing seasons was significantly influenced by site preparation: survival averaged 65 and 79% without release in the blading and trenching treatments, respectively, and 22% in the untreated control; with release, survival averaged 74 and 80% in the blading and trenching treatments, respectively, and 24% in the untreated control. Growth was greatest in the bladed treatment, poorest by far in the untreated control. The ineffectiveness of herbicides in these experiments is surprising in view of successes elsewhere. Microclimate and seedling response of planted white spruce were investigated under four canopy densities (control — a 120year old uncut aspen/white spruce stand, low and high residual densities of shelterwood canopy, and clearcut) and three site preparation treatments in the Lower Foothills of central Alberta. The partial canopy of the shelterwoods had a less extreme environment than the clearcut: higher humidity and soil temperature, lower maximum air temperature and occurrence and severity of night frost, and a light regime that was nearly optimum for height growth of juvenile white spruce. Planted white spruce seedlings had earlier bud break, lower seedling mortality and terminal bud mortality, higher rates of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance, and greater height and diameter increments under shelterwoods than those in either clearcut or control. Site preparation increased soil temperature, decreased seedling mortality and improved growth, especially diameter growth. This study demonstrates how shelterwoods and site preparation can improve the establishment of white spruce. In boreal mixedwood forests, aspen (Populus tremuloides) and white spruce (Picea glauca) commonly grow in mixture. These species may avoid competition through differential shade tolerance, physical separation of canopies, phenological differences, successional separation, and differences in soil resource utilization. Aspen may also be able to positively affect the growth of white spruce by improving litter decomposition and nutrient cycling rates, controlling grass and shrub competition, ameliorating environmental extremes, and reducing pest attack. These positive relationships likely make mixed-species stands more productive than pure stands of the same species. An optimal impact design experiment was established in 1997 to investigate silvicultural alternatives for reducing vulnerability of white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) stands to spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.)) damage. Ecosystem and insect population responses are being assessed in stands, thinned using a cut-to-length harvest system that removed 25% or 50% of standing volume in three patterns: uniform shelterwood cuts, standard strip cuts, and strips with "feathered" edges. Clear-cuts and untreated checks support comparisons among the undisturbed state, conventional practice, and thinning regimes. Subplots in the uniform shelterwood cuts and untreated checks were fertilized with 200 kg N/ha in early spring of 1998. Ecoregion-based variable-exponent taper equations for white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) were validated on independent tree sectioning data sets. Criteria used for model validation were briefly reviewed, along with applicable interpretations. Examination of the validation plots and statistics indicated that the mean prediction biases were small and very close to zero (-0.0058 7le; ē ≤ 0.0247; -0.03% ≤ e% ≤ 0.20%), and the mean squared error of prediction was low. The agreement between observed and predicted values from the taper equations was strong and obvious, and was consistent across the size classes of the predicted values.
