Abstract

The article discusses the functions and impact of using semiotic systems in teaching mathematics. It provides an overview of the semiotic systems and the rules of sign use. The author explores the three functions of mathematical text with emphasis on its ideational function. He also presents models to illustrate the relationship between semiotic systems and social location or context.
