In this paper, we compare measured, modelled, and simulated mean velocity profiles. Smooth pipe flow simulations are performed for both incompressible (below Mach 0.2) and compressible (below Mach 0.1) fluids. The compressible simulations align most closely with the measurements. The simulations are subsequently used to make scaling formulae of the turbulence intensity as a function of the Reynolds number. These scaling expressions are compared to scaling derived from measurements. Finally, the found compressible scaling laws are used as an example to show how the flow noise in a flowmeter is expected to scale with the mean flow velocity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coriolis flowmeters experience measurement errors due to both single- and two-phase flow. For two-phase flow, severe damping may occur, which leads to a (temporary) inability of the flowmeter to operate. The dominating part of the damping is caused by decoupling of the continuous and the dispersed phase. This paper presents the theory of damping due to decoupling in two-phase flow. Using a simple structural model, we provide examples of mixtures with water as the continuous phase. The dispersed phase is either air, or oil or sand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Coriolis flowmeters operate with high accuracy when the medium metered is a single-phase incompressible fluid. Multi-phase fluids lead to measurement errors because of center-of-mass motion. In this paper we review the “bubble theory” which describes errors due to phase decoupling of two-phase fluids. The existing viscous and incompressible theory of isothermal sound propagation and attenuation in suspensions considers solid particles which are infinitely viscous. We extend the theory by applying the amended Coriolis flowmeter "bubble theory". Here, the drag force is a function of both the fluid and particle Stokes numbers and the particle-to-fluid ratio of the dynamic viscosity (Galindo and Gerbeth, 1993). Aerosol and hydrosol examples are presented and differences between the original and extended theories are discussed. • The viscous and incompressible theory is extended by considering the viscosity of the particles. • The extended theory is based on the amended Coriolis flowmeter "bubble theory". • Significant corrections result from the extended theory, especially for gas bubbles entrained in liquids.
