Among diabetic patients the presence of a nephropathy is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. But the prevalence and importance of the classical risk factors of cardiovascular disease among these patients do not appear to fully explain this phenomenon. An impaired fibrinolysis has been shown to be a risk factor for coronary heart disease.
