The compound feed industry in Germany is waiting for clear guidelines to implement the Supply Chain Act. The market for compound feed has somewhat stabilized, but a further decline in production is expected, especially in the pig sector. In contrast, there are slight increases in ruminants and consistent numbers in the poultry sector. The sale of pet food is developing positively, but the largest sales still occur in the livestock sector. The compound feed industry in Germany remains a core market, although some companies are also active in neighboring countries. The increasing requirements for animal welfare and a more climate-friendly meat production pose challenges for compound feed production. [Extracted from the article]

The President of FEFAC, Pedro Cordero, emphasizes in an interview the importance of reducing the CO2 footprint in the feed industry. He suggests using by-products and local products to achieve this. However, a clear definition of the feed chain is necessary. Cordero mentions the dependence on Chinese raw materials as one of the biggest challenges for compound feed manufacturers. He also talks about the EU protein plan and the need for a balance sheet to determine the demand for alternative protein in Europe. Cordero emphasizes the importance of the circular economy in the feed and livestock chain to preserve nutrients. [Extracted from the article]

The new president of the German Association of Animal Feed (DVT), Cord Schiplage, talks about the challenges facing the animal feed industry. He emphasizes that the decline in livestock, especially in fattening animals, is one of the biggest challenges. The feed industry must also deal with price fluctuations, political obstacles, and the transformation of agriculture. Schiplage calls for comprehensive concepts and guidelines from politics to successfully overcome these challenges. He also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and the need to optimize animal and plant production. Schiplage sees growth opportunities in optimizing feed in terms of climate protection and resource conservation. He believes that the organic market will grow in the long term, but that certain restrictions need to be reconsidered. Schiplage wants to further develop alliances within the industry to gain more weight and influence. He also emphasizes the need for a more efficient organization of quality assurance systems. The circular economy is a current topic, but not everything is running smoothly yet. The feed industry is indeed making efforts to consume less energy and resources and reduce the CO_2 footprint, but bureaucratic hurdles make it difficult to use by-products. There is a lack of a concrete agenda to promote the circular economy, and politics is lagging behind. It is important to prioritize clear goals and accept conflicting objectives in order to ensure a profitable economy, investments in innovation, and the protection of the environment. 33 associations sent clear messages during the farmers' protests in January: the current regulations for agricultural diesel must be maintained. The competitiveness of German agriculture must not deteriorate further. It is about recognizing the achievements of German agriculture and appreciating the value of food. There is also a demand for more public presence for the animal feed industry, which serves as an important supplier for livestock farmers. The government must ensure fair competition conditions and provide future prospects, while the economy itself can contribute to this. [Extracted from the article]

The mood among the participants of the 30th Fefac Congress was optimistic, as the feed industry and research constantly present new innovations and insights into animal welfare, climate protection, and animal nutrition. However, there are concerns about the direction in which the industry is developing. The EU rejects the abolition of animal husbandry, but the transformation is "irreversible". The financing is still unclear, and companies must develop sustainable concepts as the food retail sector quickly implements the demands of society. Waiting for politics is not an option. The revision of EU Regulation 1831/2003 on feed additives will not be completed during this term, as confirmed by Commissioner of DG SANTE, Stella Kyriakides, in a response letter to the Chairman of the European Parliament's Agriculture Committee, Norbert Lins. The feed additive industry is no longer supported by politics, as the positive effects are not perceived and not taken into account. The animal nutrition industry has already developed concepts for reducing environmentally relevant emissions that are not feasible without feed additives. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the contribution of modern animal nutrition to the goals of the Farm-to-Fork strategy in society and politics. Therefore, the AWT has started to communicate with politics to strengthen the perception of the role of the feed additive industry as an important actor for a more sustainable and healthier food production. ANIMAL industry , *ANIMAL welfare , *ANIMAL feeds , *FEED industry , *MARKET volatility - Abstract
The animal feed industry has successfully overcome the challenges of the past year, but the outlook remains cloudy. Livestock populations in Europe continue to decline, leading to a decrease in sales opportunities. Therefore, the industry is increasingly focusing on growth markets in Southeast Asia, particularly poultry feed and aquaculture feed. An increase in sales of pig feed is also expected in China. Companies in the animal feed industry are relying on innovation and seeking new markets to strengthen their presence. This involves establishing new partnerships with market partners and reorganizing existing ones. Challenges such as market volatility, as well as sustainability and animal welfare requirements, persist. The coming year is expected to be equally demanding. [Extracted from the article]

The production of pig feed increased by 6.6%, while the quantity of layer hen feed slightly decreased. The tonnage of dairy cow feed increased slightly, while the production of other cattle feed decreased worldwide. The aquaculture industry experienced a growth of 3.7%, while the production of pet food had the highest increase at 8.2%. North America and Latin America experienced moderate growth, while Europe saw a decline in feed production. Despite several challenges, global feed production increased by 2.3% last year. China had the strongest growth. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the agricultural and food sectors, but led to positive developments in feed production. The amount of feed produced worldwide in 2021 was estimated at 1.235 billion tons, an increase of 2.3% compared to the previous year. The top ten feed-producing countries are China, USA, Brazil, India, Mexico, Spain, Russia, Germany, Japan, and France. Plant extracts market created in the late 80's is currently booming and welcoming new actors every day. Today, feed additive manufacturers are claiming antimicrobial effects of their plant extracts as the main effect of their blends. 20 years later, research has allowed to revise our thinking and to consider amore integrated approach of their mode of actions. Only few committed companies have been able to explain their activity as immune-modulator. Controversial sales claims are leading to a lack of consistent information on the market. The article deals with the uncertainties and challenges that the animal feed industry and agriculture face in the new year. The new Minister of Agriculture, Cem Özdemir, has announced changes in agriculture that could be promising for the animal feed industry. However, there is a danger that the decline in livestock numbers and the demand for species-appropriate animal husbandry and environmental protection could affect the animal feed industry. It is emphasized that a close interconnection between animal husbandry and crop production is necessary to achieve sustainable agriculture. The importance of sustainable animal nutrition is highlighted, as only healthy animals can achieve high nutrient utilization. It is pointed out that Europe is important as a location for global food security and that income security for farmers can be a correct path. [Extracted from the article]
