The 23rd FEBS YSF was held from 26th to 29th June 2024 in Pavia, Italy. Over 100 PhD students and early postdoctoral researchers from around 30 different countries came together at the inspiring rooms of the University of Pavia for a four‐day event. This year's topic was 'Biochemistry for bridging the gap', meaning the opportunity to have a comprehensive perspective on all biochemistry applications. Four renowned keynote speakers presented their latest research, accompanied by four career‐focused speakers, as well as additional sessions on academic career opportunities, including fellowships, women in science, and laboratory sustainability. Additionally, 10 selected YSF participants gave short talks to a large audience, while the remaining attendees shared their research findings through flash talks and two dedicated poster sessions. Scientific exchange and networking were encouraged during the poster sessions, breaks, and the social events. The meeting was a prelude before attending the 48th FEBS congress, celebrated in Milan. The success of the series will be continued during the 24th YSF edition: 'Inspired by nature, driven by science', which will take place from 2nd to 5th July 2025 in Sapanca, Türkiye. Biomolecular condensates are microdroplets that form inside cells and serve to selectively concentrate proteins, RNAs and other molecules for a variety of physiological functions, but can contribute to cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and viral infections. The formation of these condensates is driven by weak, transient interactions between molecules. These weak associations can operate at the level of whole protein domains, elements of secondary structure or even moieties composed of just a few atoms. Different types of condensates do not generally combine to form larger microdroplets, suggesting that each uses a distinct class of attractive interactions. Here, we address whether polyproline II (PPII) helices mediate condensate formation. By combining with PPII‐binding elements such as GYF, WW, profilin, SH3 or OCRE domains, PPII helices help form lipid rafts, nuclear speckles, P‐body‐like neuronal granules, enhancer complexes and other condensates. The number of PPII helical tracts or tandem PPII‐binding domains can strongly influence condensate stability. Many PPII helices have a low content of proline residues, which hinders their identification. Recently, we characterized the NMR spectral properties of a Gly‐rich, Pro‐poor protein composed of six PPII helices. Based on those results, we predicted that many Gly‐rich segments may form PPII helices and interact with PPII‐binding domains. This prediction is being tested and could join the palette of verified interactions contributing to biomolecular condensate formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The agro‐food industry cannot today do without packaging to preserve and above all market its products. Plastic materials coming mainly from petrochemicals have taken a predominant place in the food packaging sector. They have become indispensable in many sectors, from fresh to frozen products, from meat and dairy products to fruit and vegetables or almost‐ready meals. Plastics are cheap, their lightness reduces transport costs, and their convenience is fundamental for out‐of‐home catering. However, plastics pose serious end‐of‐life issues. The development of materials that are more respectful of the consumer and the environment has become a major issue. In addition, the agro‐food industries generate significant quantities of waste or by‐products that are poorly or not at all recovered. However, these contain constituents that can be extracted or transformed to be compatible with packaging uses. Many molecules from waste materials are of particular interest for the development of active packaging such as biopolymers, bioactive agents, inorganic compounds, fibers, or nano‐ and micro‐objects. Providing bioactive functions such as antioxidants or antimicrobials can extend the shelf life of food while reducing the sophistication of plastic materials and thus improving their recycling. This article summarizes the main materials and constituents that can be recovered from waste and illustrates through several examples what could be the applications of such new, sustainable, and active packaging. Malaria is caused by Apicomplexa protozoans from the Plasmodium genus entering the bloodstream of humans and animals through the bite of the female mosquitoes. The annotation of the Plasmodium vivax genome revealed a putative RNA binding protein (apiRBP) that was predicted to be trafficked into the apicoplast, a plastid organelle unique to Apicomplexa protozoans. Although a 3D structural model of the apiRBP corresponds to a noncanonical RNA recognition motif with an additional C‐terminal α‐helix (α3), preliminary protein production trials were nevertheless unsuccessful. Theoretical solvation analysis of the apiRBP model highlighted an exposed hydrophobic region clustering α3. Hence, we used a C‐terminal GFP‐fused chimera to stabilize the highly insoluble apiRBP and determined its ability to bind U‐rich stretches of RNA. The affinity of apiRBP toward such RNAs is highly dependent on ionic strength, suggesting that the apiRBP–RNA complex is driven by electrostatic interactions. Altogether, apiRBP represents an attractive tool for apicoplast transcriptional studies and for antimalarial drug design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
