Abstract: In this paper, different types of classification methods are compared for effective diagnosis of Parkinson’s diseases. The reliable diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease is notoriously difficult to achieve with misdiagnosis reported to be as high as 25% of cases. The approaches described in this paper purpose to efficiently distinguish healthy individuals. Four independent classification schemas were applied and a comparative study was carried out. These are Neural Networks, DMneural, Regression and Decision Tree respectively. Various evaluation methods were employed for calculating the performance score of the classifiers. According to the application scores, neural networks classifier yields the best results. The overall classification score for neural network is 92.9%. Moreover, we compared our results with the result that was obtained by kernel support vector machines [Singh, N., Pillay, V., & Choonara, Y. E. (2007). This paper is concerned with applications of a dual Neural Network (NN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) to prediction and analysis of beta barrel trans membrane proteins. The prediction and analysis of beta barrel proteins usually offer a host of challenges to the research community, because of their low presence in genomes. Current beta barrel prediction methodologies present intermittent misclassifications resulting in mismatch in the number of membrane spanning regions within amino-acid sequences. To address the problem, this research embarks upon a NN technique and its comparison with hybrid-two-level NN-SVM methodology to classify inter-class and intra-class transitions to predict the number and range of beta membrane spanning regions. The methodology utilizes a sliding-window-based feature extraction to train two different class transitions entitled symmetric and asymmetric models. In symmetric modelling, the NN and SVM frameworks train for sliding window over the same intra-class areas such as inner-to-inner, membrane(beta)-to-membrane and outer-to-outer. In contrast, the asymmetric transition trains a NN-SVM classifier for inter-class transition such as outer-to-membrane (beta) and membrane (beta)-to-inner, inner-to-membrane and membrane-to-outer. For the NN and NN-SVM to generate robust outcomes, the prediction methodologies are analysed by jack-knife tests and single protein tests. The computer simulation results demonstrate a significant impact and a superior performance of NN-SVM tests with a 5 residue overlap for signal protein over NN with and without redundant proteins for prediction of trans membrane beta barrel spanning regions. Abstract: Accurate time series forecasting is a key issue to support individual and organizational decision making. In this paper, we introduce novel methods for multi-step seasonal time series forecasting. All the presented methods stem from computational intelligence techniques: evolutionary artificial neural networks, support vector machines and genuine linguistic fuzzy rules. Performance of the suggested methods is experimentally justified on seasonal time series from distinct domains on three forecasting horizons. The most important contribution is the introduction of a new hybrid combination using linguistic fuzzy rules and the other computational intelligence methods. This hybrid combination presents competitive forecasts, when compared with the popular ARIMA method. Abstract: Control charts are usually used in manufacturing and service industries to determine whether a process is performing as intended or if there are some unnatural causes of variation. Once the control chart detects a process change, the next issue is to “search for assignable causes”, or “take corrective actions”, etc. Before corrective actions are taken, it is critical to search for the cause of the out-of-control situation. During this search process, knowledge of the current parameter level can be helpful to narrow the set of possible assignable causes. Sometimes, the process/product parameters might be adjusted following the out-of-control signal to improve quality. An accurate estimate of the parameter will naturally provide a more precise adjustment of the process. A distinct weakness of most existing control charts techniques is that they merely provide out-of-control signals without predicting the magnitudes of changes. In this paper, we develop a support vector regression (SVR) model for predicting the process mean shifts. Firstly, a cumulative sum (CUSUM) chart is employed to detect shifts in the mean of a process. Next, an SVR-based model is used to estimate the magnitude of shifts as soon as CUSUM signals an out-of-control situation. The performance of the proposed SVR was evaluated by estimating mean absolute percent errors (MAPE) and normalized root mean squared errors (NRMSE) using simulation. To evaluate the prediction ability of SVR, we compared its performance with that of neural networks and statistical methods. Overall results of performance evaluations indicate that the proposed support vector regression model has better estimation capabilities than CUSUM and neural networks. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper proposes a new intelligence paradigm scheme to forecast that emphasizes on numerous software development elements based on functional networks forecasting framework. The most common methods for estimating software development efforts that have been proposed in literature are: line of code (LOC)-based constructive cost model (COCOMO), function point (FP) based on neural networks, regression, and case-based reasoning (CBR). Unfortunately, such forecasting models have numerous of drawbacks, namely, their inability to deal with uncertainties and imprecision present in software projects early in the development life-cycle. The main benefit of this study is to utilize both function points and development environments of recent software development cases prominent, which have high impact on the success of software development projects. Both implementation and learning process are briefly proposed. We investigate the efficiency of the new framework for predicting the software development efforts using both simulation and COCOMO real-life databases. Prediction accuracy of the functional networks framework is evaluated and compared with the commonly used regression and neural networks-based models. The results show that the new intelligence paradigm predicts the required efforts of the initial stage of software development with reliable performance and outperforms both regression and neural networks-based models. Abstract: In order to improve the prediction rates of churn prediction in land-line telecommunication service field, this paper proposes a new set of features with three new input window techniques. The new features are demographic profiles, account information, grant information, Henley segmentation, aggregated call-details, line information, service orders, bill and payment history. The basic idea of the three input window techniques is to make the position order of some monthly aggregated call-detail features from previous months in the combined feature set for testing be as the same one as for training phase. For evaluating these new features and window techniques, the two most common modelling techniques (decision trees and multilayer perceptron neural networks) and one of the most promising approaches (support vector machines) are selected as predictors. The experimental results show that the new features with the new window techniques are efficient for churn prediction in land-line telecommunication service fields. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this paper, we focus on the experimental analysis on the performance in artificial neural networks with the use of statistical tests on the classification task. Particularly, we have studied whether the sample of results from multiple trials obtained by conventional artificial neural networks and support vector machines checks the necessary conditions for being analyzed through parametrical tests. The study is conducted by considering three possibilities on classification experiments: random variation in the selection of test data, the selection of training data and internal randomness in the learning algorithm. The results obtained state that the fulfillment of these conditions are problem-dependent and indefinite, which justifies the need of using non-parametric statistics in the experimental analysis. Abstract: Software engineering development has gradually become essential element in different aspects of the daily life and an important factor in numerous critical real-industry applications, such as, nuclear plants, medical monitoring control, real-time military, bioinformatics, oil and gas industry, and air traffic control. This paper proposes a functional network as a novel computational intelligence scheme for tracking and predicting the software reliability. Several applications are presented to illustrate this new intelligent system framework models. To demonstrate the usefulness of functional networks and the existing data mining schemes, we briefly describe the learning algorithm of functional networks associativity model in predicting the software reliability. Comparative studies will be carried out to compare the performance of functional networks with the most popular existing data mining techniques, such as, statistical regression multilayer feed forward neural networks, and support vector machines. Abstract: Process control charts are important tools for monitoring process variation in manufacturing industries. There are many situations in which the simultaneous monitoring or control of two or more related quality characteristics is necessary. Out-of-control signals in multivariate charts may be caused by one or more variables or a combination of variables. One difficulty encountered with multivariate control charts is the interpretation of an out-of-control signal. That is, we have to determine which variable is responsible for the signal. A novel approach for identifying the source of variance shifts in the multivariate process is presented in this paper. In this study, we formulated the interpretation of out-of-control signal as a classification problem. The proposed system includes a shift detector and a classifier. The traditional generalized variance chart works as a variance shift detector. When an out-of-control signal is generated, a classifier will determine which variable is responsible for the variance shift. We consider two classifiers based on neural networks (NN) and support vector machines (SVM). We propose using subgroup data and some extracted features as predictors. The performance of the proposed system was evaluated by computing its classification accuracy. Results from simulation studies indicate that the proposed approach is a successful method in identifying the source of variance change. The results indicate that the NN-based classifier and SVM classifier have similar classification performance. An illustrative example is given to describe the applications of the proposed methods in manufacturing process control. The proposed method may facilitate the diagnosis of the out-of-control signal. Abstract: This paper proposes a hybrid methodology that exploits the unique strength of the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model and the support vector machines (SVM) model in forecasting seasonal time series. The seasonal time series data of Taiwan’s machinery industry production values were used to examine the forecasting accuracy of the proposed hybrid model. The forecasting performance was compared among three models, i.e., the hybrid model, SARIMA models and the SVM models, respectively. Among these methods, the normalized mean square error (NMSE) and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of the hybrid model were the lowest. The hybrid model was also able to forecast certain significant turning points of the test time series. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
