The vigilance decrement, a temporal decline in detection performance, has been observed across multiple sensory modalities. Spatial uncertainty about the location of task-relevant stimuli has been demonstrated to increase the demands of vigilance and increase the severity of the vigilance decrement when attending to visual displays. The current study investigated whether spatial uncertainty also increases the severity of the vigilance decrement and task demands when an auditory display is used. Individuals monitored an auditory display to detect critical signals that were shorter in duration than non-target stimuli. These auditory stimuli were presented in either a consistent, predictable pattern that alternated sound presentation from left to right (spatial certainty) or an inconsistent, unpredictable pattern that randomly presented sounds from the left or right (spatial uncertainty). Cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) was measured to assess the neurophysiological demands of the task. A decline in performance and CBFV was observed in both the spatially certain and spatially uncertain conditions, suggesting that spatial auditory vigilance tasks are demanding and can result in a vigilance decrement. Spatial uncertainty resulted in a more severe vigilance decrement in correct detections compared to spatial certainty. Reduced right-hemispheric CBFV was also observed during spatial uncertainty compared to spatial certainty. Together, these results suggest that auditory spatial uncertainty hindered performance and required greater attentional demands compared to spatial certainty. These results concur with previous research showing the negative impact of spatial uncertainty in visual vigilance tasks, but the current results contrast recent research showing no effect of spatial uncertainty on tactile vigilance. The ability to adapt to the environment is linked to the possibility of inhibiting inappropriate behaviours, and this ability can be enhanced by attention. Despite this premise, the scientific literature that assesses how attention can influence inhibition is still limited. This study contributes to this topic by evaluating whether spatial and moving attentional cueing can influence inhibitory control. We employed a task in which subjects viewed a vertical bar on the screen that, from a central position, moved either left or right where two circles were positioned. Subjects were asked to respond by pressing a key when the motion of the bar was interrupted close to the circle (go signal). In about 40% of the trials, following the go signal and after a variable delay, a visual target appeared in either one of the circles, requiring response inhibition (stop signal). In most of the trials the stop signal appeared on the same side as the go signal (valid condition), while in the others, it appeared on the opposite side (invalid condition). We found that spatial and moving cueing facilitates inhibitory control in the valid condition. This facilitation was observed especially for stop signals that appeared within 250ms of the presentation of the go signal, thus suggesting an involvement of exogenous attentional orienting. This work demonstrates that spatial and moving cueing can influence inhibitory control, providing a contribution to the investigation of the relationship between spatial attention and inhibitory control. Healthy individuals typically show more attention to the left than to the right (known as pseudoneglect), and to the upper than to the lower visual field (known as altitudinal pseudoneglect). These biases are thought to reflect asymmetries in neural processes. Attention biases have been used to investigate how these neural asymmetries change with age. However, inconsistent results have been reported regarding the presence and direction of age-related effects on horizontal and vertical attention biases. The observed inconsistencies may be due to insensitive measures and small sample sizes, that usually only feature extreme age groups. We investigated whether spatial attention biases, as indexed by gaze position during free viewing of a single image, are influenced by age. We analysed free-viewing data from 4,243 participants aged 5–65 years and found that attention biases shifted to the right and superior directions with increasing age. These findings are consistent with the idea of developing cerebral asymmetries with age and support the hypothesis of the origin of the leftward bias. Age modulations were found only for the first seven fixations, corresponding to the time window in which an absolute leftward bias in free viewing was previously observed. We interpret this as evidence that the horizontal and vertical attention biases are primarily present when orienting attention to a novel stimulus – and that age modulations of attention orienting are not global modulations of spatial attention. Alertness, or one's general readiness to respond to stimulation, has previously been shown to affect spatial attention. However, most of this previous research focused on speeded, laboratory-based reaction tasks, as opposed to the classical line bisection task typically used to diagnose deficits of spatial attention in clinical settings. McIntosh et al. (Cogn Brain Res 25:833–850, 2005) provide a form of line bisection task which they argue can more sensitively assess spatial attention. Ninety-eight participants were presented with this line bisection task, once with and once without spatial cues, and both before and after a 50-min vigilance task that aimed to decrease alertness. A single participant was excluded due to potentially inconsistent behaviour in the task, leaving 97 participants for the full analyses. While participants were, on a group level, less alert after the 50-min vigilance task, they showed none of the hypothesised effects of reduced alertness on spatial attention in the line bisection task, regardless of with or without spatial cues. Yet, they did show the proposed effect of decreased alertness leading to a lower level of general attention. This suggests that alertness has no effect on spatial attention, as measured by a line bisection task, in neurotypical participants. We thus conclude that, in neurotypical participants, the effect of alertness on spatial attention can be examined more sensitively with tasks requiring a speeded response compared to unspeeded tasks. People react faster to visuo-tactile stimuli presented near the body (i.e., in peripersonal space) than to tactile stimuli presented alone. This multi-sensory facilitation effect has been used as a measurement of peripersonal space. Previous research has reported that peripersonal space representations can be modulated by actively using hand-held tools or disconnected hand avatars. However, previous research has ignored the possibility that the attentional effect of active tool use could affect multi-sensory facilitation. In the present study, we delivered tactile stimuli to participants' left or right hand concurrently with visual stimuli presented near a virtual hand avatar operated by the movements of participants' left or right hand, which was shown far in a virtual environment and disconnected from the body. Participants reacted to tactile stimuli while ignoring the visual stimuli. The results indicated a multi-sensory facilitation effect when tactile stimuli were delivered to the hand used to operate the hand avatar. In contrast, the facilitation was not observed when the tactile stimuli were delivered to the hand that is not operating the hand avatar. These results suggest that the strength of the multi-sensory facilitation effect differed across conditions, even though the visual attention captured around the hand avatar was controlled across conditions. The effects of left and right alignment on the Ebbinghaus illusion were investigated in three experiments. In Experiment 1, the Ebbinghaus illusion was presented on the left or right side, and the points of subjective equality (PSE) were measured. Only the central disk of the figure with small inducers was perceived larger when it was positioned on the right side rather than on the left. In Experiments 2 and 3, left, right, and central placement were used to determine if the results of Experiment 1 were caused by a decrease of the illusion on the left side or an increase of the illusion on the right side. There was no difference in the illusion effect between the left and the center; however, the illusion effect increased when the figure was presented on the right side. These results suggest that a hemispheric asymmetry for global and local spatial attention influences the laterality of the Ebbinghaus illusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A sufficient level of alerting, bottom-up stimulus strength, and attention have been proposed as important pre-requisites for conscious perception (Dehaene et al. in Trends Cogn Sci 10:204-211, 2006). The combination of different levels of each of these processes might differentially bias the access to consciousness, so that the impact of a specific factor on conscious access would depend on the levels of the other factors. To explore this possibility, we measured how the interaction between different levels of (phasic and tonic) alerting, stimulus bottom-up activation, and endogenous spatial attention, influences conscious perception. We observed that endogenous spatial attention affected conscious perception mainly when target bottom-up strength was low, by improving perceptual sensitivity and making the response criterion stricter. Attention-driven increases of perceptual sensitivity (without variations in response criterion) were also observed for higher levels of bottom-up strength, but only when tonic alerting decreased. Phasic alerting boosted perceptual sensitivity independently of target bottom-up strength, even though it differently affected response bias, yielding a more liberal response criterion when target bottom-up strength increases. These results suggest that a more exhaustive approach to the study of conscious perception should consider the interaction of the multiple factors that are susceptible to modulate perceptual consciousness, rather than studying their effects in isolation. While the behavioral dynamics as well as the functional network of sustained and transient attention have extensively been studied, their underlying neural mechanisms have most often been investigated in separate experiments. In the present study, participants were instructed to perform an audio-visual spatial attention task. They were asked to attend to either the left or the right hemifield and to respond to deviant transient either auditory or visual stimuli. Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) elicited by two task irrelevant pattern reversing checkerboards flickering at 10 and 15 Hz in the left and the right hemifields, respectively, were used to continuously monitor the locus of spatial attention. The amplitude and phase of the SSVEPs were extracted for single trials and were separately analyzed. Sustained attention to one hemifield (spatial attention) as well as to the auditory modality (intermodal attention) increased the inter-trial phase locking of the SSVEP responses, whereas briefly presented visual and auditory stimuli decreased the single-trial SSVEP amplitude between 200 and 500 ms post-stimulus. This transient change of the single-trial amplitude was restricted to the SSVEPs elicited by the reversing checkerboard in the spatially attended hemifield and thus might reflect a transient re-orienting of attention towards the brief stimuli. Across three experiments, we examined the efficacy of three cues from the human body-body orientation, head turning, and eye-gaze direction-to shift an observer's attention in space. Using a modified Posner cueing paradigm, we replicate the previous findings of gender differences in the gaze-cueing effect whereby female but not male participants responded significantly faster to validly cued than to invalidly cued targets. In contrast to the previous studies, we report a robust cueing effect for both male and female participants when head turning direction was used as the central cue, whereas oriented bodies proved ineffectual as cues to attention for both males and females. These results are discussed with reference to the time course of central cueing effects, gender differences in spatial attention, and current models of how cues from the human body are combined to judge another person's direction of attention. Unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit leads to broad cognitive difficulties and biases in spatial orientation. More specifically, vestibular patients typically show a spatial bias toward their affected ear in the subjective visual vertical, head and trunk orientation, fall tendency, and walking trajectory. By means of a random number generation task, we set out to investigate how an acute peripheral vestibular deficit affects the mental representation of numbers in space. Furthermore, the random number generation task allowed us to test if patients with peripheral vestibular deficit show evidence of impaired executive functions while keeping the head straight and while performing active head turns. Previous research using galvanic vestibular stimulation in healthy people has shown no effects on number space, but revealed increased redundancy of the generated numbers. Other studies reported a spatial bias in number representation during active and passive head turns. In this experiment, we tested 43 patients with acute vestibular neuritis (18 patients with left-sided and 25 with right-sided vestibular deficit) and 28 age-matched healthy controls. We found no bias in number space in patients with peripheral vestibular deficit but showed increased redundancy in patients during active head turns. Patients showed worse performance in generating sequences of random numbers, which indicates a deficit in the updating component of executive functions. We argue that RNG is a promising candidate for a time- and cost-effective assessment of executive functions in patients suffering from a peripheral vestibular deficit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While mechanisms of orienting attention in unilateral spatial neglect (USN) have frequently been studied in the visual domain, these mechanisms remain relatively unexplored in the auditory domain. Our first goal was to replicate Spence and Driver's (J Exp Psychol Hum 22:1005-1030, 1994) results with a virtual reality paradigm. This paradigm simulated a 3-dimensional auditory space with headphones. Our second aim was to study auditory profiles of orienting attention in USN. In a first experiment, 18 healthy participants performed an auditory cueing spatial paradigm (either a target-detection task or a target-lateralization task). In a second experiment, 14 right-stroke patients (10 with USN and 4 without USN) performed these two same tasks. As in Spence and Driver's (J Exp Psychol Hum 22:1005-1030, 1994), our first experiment showed that spatial representations are not utilized for the detection of auditory stimuli. However, during the lateralization task, participants were quicker to detect targets preceded by a spatially congruent cue, which suggests that our paradigm could be suitable for studying orienting attention in hearing. Our second experiment found that patients with USN also needed an explicit spatial task to be sensitive to auditory spatial cueing. In the target-lateralization task, they showed effects lateralized only to one side of space, whereas patients without USN did not. Although our paradigm needs replications to better understand orienting attention impairments in hearing in USN, this study could have implications for the development of clinical tasks that could assess auditory spatial attention in USN syndrome. It is currently unclear whether a person's own face has greater capacity in absorbing his/her attention than faces of others. With two visual distractor tasks, the present study assessed the extent to which a person's own face attracts his/her attention, by measuring face distractor elicited distortion of saccade trajectories. Experiment 1 showed that upright faces induced stronger distortion of saccade trajectories than inverted ones. This face inversion effect, however, was not stronger for the participant's own face than for unfamiliar other's faces. By manipulating fixation stimulus offset and using peripheral onset target, Experiment 2 further demonstrated that these observations were not contingent on saccade latency. Together, these findings suggest that a person's own face is not more salient or attention-absorbing than unfamiliar other's faces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Healthy individuals are usually biased toward small numbers when they are asked to mentally bisect number intervals or generate number sequences. Number magnitude may be represented spatially along a left-to-right mental number line. The preference for small numbers is believed to reflect the leftward spatial bias of this numerical representation. This study examined whether small numbers captured visual attention more than larger numbers. Participants were asked to detect a target pre-cued by a small or a large number. We found that the response was faster when the target was pre-cued by a small number than when pre-cued by a large number, suggesting that visual attention is preferentially allocated to small numbers. In addition, this attentional preference for small numbers was distinct for participants of different educational backgrounds. For science or engineering participants, this small number preference was enhanced by left-hand responding and was positively correlated with the small number preference in a random number generation task, suggesting that the small number preference was attributable to a leftward bias of the spatial representation. For liberal arts participants, however, left-hand responding did not enhance the small number preference and no correlations were found between the attention task and the random number generation task, suggesting that non-spatial processing mediated the small number preference. Our findings show that the small number preference occurs as early as the perceptual processing stage and distinct mechanisms underlie the preference for small numbers for participants with different educational backgrounds. Goal-directed movements are commonly used to allow humans to interact with their environment. When making a goal-directed movement in a natural environment, there are many competing stimuli. It is therefore important to understand how making a goal-directed movement could be impacted by the need to divide attention between the movement and competing stimuli. We used a dual-task paradigm to investigate the sharing of attentional resources between a search task in central vision and a peripheral pointing task completed concurrently. Results suggest some degree of shared attentional resources between these two tasks with performance on both central and peripheral tasks degraded under dual-task conditions. Movement latency, but not movement time, was also affected by dual-task conditions. Altogether, the results suggest that there is a cost to reach performance if attention is engaged away from the movement goal. Bálint syndrome is a combination of severe deficits affecting spatial attention, visuo-motor control and oculomotor function. While the severe restriction of attention (simultanagnosia) and impairments of visually guided reaching have been extensively studied, oculomotor apraxia has received comparatively little attention. The main explanatory hypothesis of oculomotor apraxia is that it is a direct consequence of the severe restriction of attention. Here, we examined in a patient with Bálint syndrome to what extent local image features such as luminance and contrast predict whether a region will be fixated or not. During the viewing of natural photographs, the patient made saccades of very small amplitude, but showed strongly increased fixation duration. In addition, the horizontal and vertical range of fixations was severely restrained compared to control subjects. When analysing the local feature content at fixation, we found that central fixations of the patient contained less local luminance and contrast than fixations of controls while he made fixations to peripheral image regions with disproportionately high luminance and contrast. These findings suggest that while our patient gazes at central regions irrespective of their local feature content, he only looks to the periphery when his gaze is captured by particularly conspicuous features. We propose that oculomotor apraxia in Bálint syndrome reflects a combination of biased representations within a parietal priority map and increased fixational activity due to biased interactions within the oculomotor network. A deficit disengaging attention from the ipsilesional space in order to re-orient toward the contralesional space has been reported after right-hemisphere stroke (disengage deficit) and has been related to the severity of visuospatial neglect. Neglect rehabilitation studies have shown that left limb movements improve leftward orienting; the effect, however, is variable, and the mechanism of improvement is uncertain. Thus, this study examined whether limb movements specifically reduce the underlying disengage deficit of attention after right-hemisphere stroke. The effects of active and passive limb movements (vs. no limb movement) on orienting were examined using a covert exogenously cued orienting task in groups of right-hemisphere stroke patients with and without a significant disengage deficit (DD+, DD−) and healthy older adults. As previously seen, disengage deficit scores of stroke patients were positively correlated with the severity of neglect. The leftward disengage deficit was not affected by either active or passive limb movements, however, although movements did have both alerting and distracting effects on other aspects of orienting. Thus, our results suggest that the benefits of limb movements may not be related to changes in the underlying disengage deficit, but may impact other processes that underlie left-sided orienting (e.g., arousal and voluntary strategies). We examined the relations between texture segregation and contour integration in patients with deficits in spatial attention leading to left or right hemisphere extinction. Patients and control participants were presented with texture and contour stimuli consisting of oriented elements. We induced regularity in the stimuli by manipulating the element orientations resulting in an implicit texture border or explicit contour. Participants had to discriminate curved from straight shapes without making eye movements, while the stimulus presentation time was varied using a QUEST procedure. The results showed that only patients with right hemisphere extinction had a spatial bias, needing a longer presentation time to determine the shape of the border or contour on the contralesional side, especially for borders defined by texture. These results indicate that texture segregation is modulated by attention-related brain areas in the right posterior parietal cortex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

People often fail to detect changes between successively presented tactile patterns, a phenomenon known as tactile change blindness. In this study, we investigated whether changes introduced to tactile patterns are detected better when a participant's attention is focused on the location where the change occurs. Across two experiments, participants ( N = 55) were instructed to detect changes between two consecutively presented tactile patterns. In half of the trials, the stimulated body sites in the two patterns were identical. In the other half of the trials, one of the stimulated body locations differed between the two patterns. Endogenous (or voluntary) attention was manipulated by instructing participants which new bodily location was most likely to be stimulated. We found that changes at the attended location were detected more accurately than changes at bodily locations that were unattended. This finding demonstrates that attention can effectively modulate tactile change detection. We discuss the value of this experimental paradigm for investigating excessive attentional focus or hypervigilance to particular regions of the body in various clinical populations. Automatic attentional capture by a salient distractor can be prevented by spatial attentional control settings (ACSs) (e.g., Yantis and Jonides in J Exp Psychol Hum Percept Perform 16:121-134, ). Earlier, converging evidence for a spatial ACS (Eason et al. ) was found in event-related potentials (ERPs). In these studies, the ACS was defined by a single target-relevant location. In an extension, Ishigami et al. (Vis Cogn 17:431-456, ) demonstrated a successful ACS in performance that was based on multiple (two) target-relevant locations. The purpose of the current study is to seek converging evidence from ERPs for a spatial ACS defined by multiple (two) target-relevant locations, using the methods in Ishigami et al. (Vis Cogn 17:431-456, ). Any one of four figure-8s brightened uninformatively (cue) before presentation of a digit target calling for a speeded identification (2 or 5). A spatial ACS was encouraged because in different blocks, the digit targets appeared only on the horizontal or vertical axis. Performance was more impaired following the invalid-attended cues than following invalid-unattended cues, consistent with Ishigami et al. (Vis Cogn 17:431-456, ) and verifying a successful spatial ACS. The direction of attention significantly affected the visual evoked potentials (VEPs) elicited by otherwise identical cues: the amplitudes of early VEPs were greater when the location the cue was presented in was target-relevant than when the location was target-irrelevant. These results re-affirm that attentional capture by irrelevant salient stimuli can be modulated by spatial ACSs defined by multiple target locations in performance and provide converging evidence from ERPs for the previously established behavioral findings. Primary somatosensory cortex (S1) is known to rapidly adapt to task demands and to intermodal information (e.g. from vision). Here, we show that also intramodal information (i.e. posture) can affect tactile attentional selection processes and the intermodal effects of vision on those processes at S1 stages of processing. We manipulated the spatial separation between adjacent fingers, that is, thumb and index finger where close, far apart, or touching. Participants directed their attention to either the index finger or thumb to detect infrequent tactile targets at that location while either they saw their fingers or these were covered from view. In line with the previous results, we found that attentional selection affected early somatosensory processing (P45, N80) when fingers were near and this attention effect was abolished when fingers were viewed. When fingers were far or touching, attentional modulations appeared reliably only from the P100, and furthermore, enhanced tactile-spatial selection was found when touching fingers were viewed. Taken together, these results show for the first time a profound effect of finger posture on attentional selection between fingers and its modulations by vision at early cortical stages of processing. They suggest that the adverse effects of vision on tactile attention are not driven by a conflict between the selected information in vision (two fingers) and touch (one finger) and imply that external spatial information (i.e. finger posture) rapidly affects the organisation of primary somatosensory finger representations and that this further affects vision and tactile-spatial selection effects on S1. The appearance of a stimulus in the periphery and the direction of another person's eye gaze have both been shown to automatically orient attention toward the stimulus and the gazed-at location, respectively. In the present experiment, we examined the effects of viewing both a peripheral stimulus and an eye gaze stimulus simultaneously in order to determine whether one is 'more automatic' (i.e., faster, dominates) than the other and whether the two processes interact. Using a spatial cueing paradigm, we measured latency of localization of a target stimulus that was validly or invalidly cued by an uninformative (i.e., nonpredictive) peripheral cue, an uninformative eye gaze cue, or both simultaneously (double cue). We included a short and a long cue-target interval in order to investigate the early and late facilitatory and inhibitory effects of the two processes. Results demonstrated that when the double cues were consistent with each other (indicating the same target location), the effects, both early and late, were the same as when the peripheral cue was presented alone. When the double cues were inconsistent (indicating opposite target locations), the late effect was the same as the peripheral cue, but the early effect was intermediate between the two types of cues. Our results better support an interactive, rather than an additive relationship between social and nonsocial automatic orienting. We propose two explicit mechanisms contributing to oculomotor inhibition of return (IOR): sensory and motor. Sensory mechanism: repeated visual stimulation results in a reduction in visual input to the superior colliculus (SC); consequently, saccades to targets that appear at previously stimulated retinotopic locations will have longer latencies than those that appear at unstimulated locations. Motor mechanism: the execution of a saccade results in asymmetric activation in the SC; as a result, saccades that reverse vectors will have longer latencies than those that repeat vectors. In the IOR literature, these two mechanisms correspond to IOR effects observed following covert exogenous orienting and overt endogenous orienting, respectively. We predict that these two independent mechanisms will have additive effects, a prediction that is confirmed in a behavioral experiment. Previous research has shown that tactile-spatial information originating from the front of the body is remapped from an anatomical to an external spatial coordinate system, guided by the availability of visual information early in development. Comparably little is known about regions of space for which visual information is not typically available, such as the space behind the body. This study tests for the first time the electrophysiological correlates of the effects of proprioceptive information on tactile-attentional mechanisms in the space behind the back. Observers were blindfolded and tactually cued to detect infrequent tactile targets on either their left or right hand and to respond to them either vocally or with index finger movements. We measured event-related potentials to tactile probes on the hands in order to explore tactile-spatial attention when the hands were either held close together or far apart behind the observer's back. Results show systematic effects of arm posture on tactile-spatial attention different from those previously found for front space. While attentional selection is typically more effective for hands placed far apart than close together in front space, we found that selection occurred more rapidly for close than far hands behind the back, during both covert attention and movement preparation tasks. This suggests that proprioceptive space may 'wrap' around the body, following the hands as they extend horizontally from the front body midline to the center of the back. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A critical question in multisensory processing is how the constant information flow that arrives to our different senses is organized in coherent representations. Some authors claim that pre-attentive detection of inter-sensory correlations supports crossmodal binding, whereas other findings indicate that attention plays a crucial role. We used visual and auditory search tasks for speaking faces to address the role of selective spatial attention in audiovisual binding. Search efficiency amongst faces for the match with a voice declined with the number of faces being monitored concurrently, consistent with an attentive search mechanism. In contrast, search amongst auditory speech streams for the match with a face was independent of the number of streams being monitored concurrently, as long as localization was not required. We suggest that the fundamental differences in the way in which auditory and visual information is encoded play a limiting role in crossmodal binding. Sleep deprivation alters attentional functions like vigilance or tonic alerting (i.e., sustaining an alert state over a period of time). However, the effects of sleep loss on both orienting and executive control are still not clear, and no study has assessed whether sleep deprivation might affect the relationships among these three attentional systems. In order to investigate the efficiency of the three attentional networks-alerting, orienting and executive control-within a single task, we used the Attention Network Test (ANT). Eighteen right-handed male participants took part in the experiment, which took place on two consecutive days. On the first day, each participant performed a 20 min training session of the ANT. On the second day, participants remained awake for 24 h during which time the ANT was performed once at 5:00 p.m. and once at 4:00 a.m. Results showed an overall slowing of reaction times in the nocturnal session, indicating a strong decrease in vigilance. Furthermore, sleep deprivation did affect attentional orienting and executive control. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that the tonic component of alerting interacts with both attentional orienting and executive functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Distraction is a common method of pain control that is often found to be effective. However, it is still largely unexplored which components of distraction are responsible for its effects. This study investigated the role of the spatial location of task-relevant stimuli in the effectiveness of distraction. Two experiments were performed in which the spatial location of visual stimuli during nociceptive input was manipulated. In a first experiment, we tested whether the reaction to nociceptive information is slower when visual stimuli are presented at a different spatial location than at the same spatial location. In a second experiment, we examined whether the manipulation of spatial location affects the experience of pain. Overall, results indicated that directing attention away from the pain location results in a slower response to painful stimuli and a reduction in pain. It may be concluded that the analgesic effect of distraction is at least partly the result of the spatial location of the distracting information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Auditory localisation was examined using brief broadband sounds presented during rapid head turns to visual targets in the peripheral field. Presenting sounds during a rapid head movement will “smear” the acoustic cues to the sound’s location. During the early stages of a head turn, sound localisation accuracy was comparable to a no-turn control condition. However, significant localisation errors occurred when the probe sound was presented during the later part of a head turn. After correcting for head position, the estimate of lateral angle (horizontal position) in the front hemisphere was generally accurate. However, lateral angle estimates for positions in the rear hemisphere exhibited systematic errors that were especially large around the midline. Polar angle (elevation) perception remained robust, being comparable to no-turn controls whether tested early or late in the head turn. The results are interpreted in terms of a ‘multiple look’ strategy for calculating sound location, and the allocation of attention to the hemisphere containing the head-turn target. A fundamental question of attentional research concerns the perceptual consequences of attention. Spatial attention can enhance stimuli within the focus of attention relative to stimuli outside; or attention can remove the influence of distracting stimuli and other forms of external noise inside the focus of attention. It is known that both strategies apply depending on how attention is cued to a location in space. Here we asked which strategy applies in an uncued situation in which people show a spontaneous bias of attention to the left side. To measure bias, we used a gratingscales task with stimuli corrupted by pixel noise. If biased attention resulted in biased stimulus enhancement its effect should be largest when there is little noise or few distractors within the attended region, and bias should decline with increasing noise. If, however, bias caused distractors to be removed asymmetrically, larger bias should show up with noisy stimuli. We found that bias rose exponentially as noise increased, in agreement with the external noise removal model, and we found evidence that noise modified interhemispheric competition between attentional systems. Attention can be directed to spatial locations or to objects in space. Patients with left unilateral spatial neglect are slow to respond to a left-sided target when it is preceded by a right-sided “invalid” cue, particularly at short cue-target intervals, suggesting an impairment in disengaging attention from the right side in order to orient it leftward. We wondered whether this deficit is purely spatial, or it is influenced by the presence of a right-sided visual object. To answer this question, we tested 10 right brain-damaged patients with chronic left-neglect and 41 control participants on a cued response time (RT) detection task in which targets could appear in either of two lateral boxes. In different conditions, non-informative peripheral cues either consisted in the brightening of the contour of one lateral box (onset cue condition), or in the complete disappearance of one lateral box (offset cue condition). The target followed the cue at different stimulus-onset asynchronies (SOAs). If the disengagement deficit (DD) is purely space-based, then it should not vary across the two cueing conditions. With onset cues, patients showed a typical DD at short SOAs. With offset cues, however, the DD disappeared. Thus, patients did not show any DD when there was no object from which attention must be disengaged. Previous studies have shown that the amplitude of event related brain potentials (ERPs) elicited by a combined audiovisual stimulus is larger than the sum of a single auditory and visual stimulus. This enlargement is thought to reflect multisensory integration. Based on these data, it may be hypothesized that the speeding up of responses, due to exogenous orienting effects induced by bimodal cues, exceeds the sum of single unimodal cues. Behavioral data, however, typically revealed no increased orienting effect following bimodal as compared to unimodal cues, which could be due to a failure of multisensory integration of the cues. To examine this possibility, we computed ERPs elicited by both bimodal (audiovisual) and unimodal (either auditory or visual) cues, and determined their exogenous orienting effects on responses to a to-be-discriminated visual target. Interestingly, the posterior P1 component elicited by bimodal cues was larger than the sum of the P1 components elicited by a single auditory and visual cue (i.e., a superadditive effect), but no enhanced orienting effect was found on response speed. We examined whether or not increasing visual perceptual load or visual working memory (WM) load would affect the exogenous orienting of visuo-spatial attention, in order to assess whether or not exogenous orienting is genuinely automatic. In Experiment 1, we manipulated visual perceptual load by means of a central morphing shape that in some trials morphed into a particular target shape (a rectangle) that participants had to detect. In Experiment 2, the possibility that the presentation of any changing stimulus at fixation would eliminate exogenous orienting was ruled out, by presenting two alternating letters at fixation. In Experiment 3, we manipulated visual WM load by means of arrays consisting of three (low-load) or five (high-load) randomly located coloured squares. The participants had to remember these items in order to judge whether a cued square had been presented in the same or different colour at the end of each trial. In all the experiments, exogenous visuo-spatial attentional orienting was measured by means of an orthogonal spatial cuing task, in which the participants had to discriminate the elevation (up vs. down) of a visual target previously cued by a spatially nonpredictive visual cue. The results showed that increasing the perceptual load of the task eliminated the exogenous orienting of visuo-spatial attention. By contrast, increasing the WM load had no effect on spatial orienting. The preparation of motor responses during the delay period of an instructed delay task is associated with sustained neural firing in the primate premotor cortex. It remains unclear how and when such preparation-related premotor activity influences the motor output system. In this study, we tested modulation of corticospinal excitability using single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) during a delayed-response task. At the beginning of the delay interval participants were either provided with no information, spatial attentional information concerning location but not identity of an upcoming imperative stimulus, or information regarding the upcoming response. Behavioral data indicate that participants used all information available to them. Only when information concerning the upcoming response was provided did corticospinal excitability show differential modulation for the effector muscle compared to other task-unrelated muscles. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) appears capable of modulating human cortical excitability beyond the duration of the stimulation train. However, the basis and extent of this “off-line” modulation remains unknown. In a group of anesthetized cats, we applied patterns of real or sham focal rTMS to the visuo-parietal cortex (VP) at high (HF) or low (LF) frequency and recorded brain glucose uptake during (on-line), immediately after (off-line), or 1 h after (late) stimulation. During the on-line period LF and HF rTMS induced a significant relative reduction of 14C-2DG uptake in the stimulated VP cortex and tightly linked cortical and subcortical structures (e.g. the superficial superior colliculus, the pulvinar, and the LPl nucleus) with respect to homologue areas in the unstimulated hemisphere. During the off-line period HF rTMS induced a significant relative increase in 14C-2DG uptake in the targeted VP cortex, whereas LF rTMS generated the opposite effect, with only mild network impact. Moderate distributed effects were only recorded after LF rTMS in the posterior thalamic structures. No long lasting cortical or subcortical effects were detected during the late period. Our findings demonstrate opposite modulation of rTMS on local and distant effects along a specific network, depending on the pattern of stimulation. Such effects are demonstrated in the anesthetized animal, ruling out behavioral and non-specific reasons for the differential impact of the stimulation. The findings are consistent with previous differential electrophysiological and behavioral effects of low and high frequency rTMS patterns and provide support to uses of rTMS in neuromodulation. A complex neural problem must be solved before a voluntary eye movement is triggered away from a stimulus (antisaccade). The location code activated by a stimulus must be internally translated into an appropriate signal to direct the eyes into the opposite visual field, while the reflexive tendency to look directly at the stimulus must be suppressed. No doubt these extra processes contribute to the ubiquitous slowing of antisaccades. However, there is no consensus on the cognitive mechanisms that contribute to the antisaccade programme. Visual attention is closely associated with the generation of saccadic eye movements and it has been shown that attention will track an illusion of line motion. A series of experiments combined this illusion with a saccadic eye movement that was congruent (i.e. directed towards), or incongruent with (i.e. direct away from), a peripheral target. Experiment 1 showed that congruent saccades had faster reaction times than incongruent saccades. In contrast, Experiments 2 and 3 demonstrated that, with illusory line motion, incongruent saccades now had faster reaction times than congruent saccades. Both spatial and temporal attention improves auditory processing and these effects seem to originate at perceptual processing stages. It is not yet known if space and time are used in parallel or sequentially for stimulus selection. To directly compare when temporal and spatial attention affect stimulus processing in the auditory modality, short and long empty intervals (600 and 1,200 ms) were presented. Each interval started with a centrally presented tone (S1) and ended with a second tone (S2) presented either on the left or on the right side. Participants had to attend one point in time (offset of the short or long interval) and one position (left or right side) and had to respond to infrequent, deviant offset markers presented at the attended time point and at the attended position. The N1 of concurrently recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) to the frequent standard stimuli was enhanced by both temporal and spatial attention. The temporal and the spatial N1 attention effect had a similar scalp topography, suggesting common neural generators. By contrast, later effects of temporal and spatial attention, consisting of a posterior positivity and an anterior negativity, markedly differed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The degree of preparation of a motor response varies with the information available regarding the response that will need to be executed and with the time provided to process that information. In experiment 1 we investigated the time-course of processing the information specified by discrete spatial cues regarding the upcoming target of directed movements. For this purpose we varied the number of cues that indicated the possible locations of the target and the duration of the cue period preceding the target. The results showed that the effects of processing the information provided by the cues developed progressively and stabilized after 0.2 s. In addition, the level of motor preparation reached was a function of number of cues. However, the effect of number of cues occurred even in the no cue period condition, i.e. when subjects could not have benefited from the information provided by the cues to prepare the response. Further analyses suggested the hypothesis that, in the no cue period condition, the effect of number of cues resulted from the cues acting as distractors (i.e., interference) whereas, with longer cue periods, the effect resulted from the motor preparatory process (i.e., facilitation). This hypothesis was tested in experiment 2 where the number of cues and the number of distractors were varied inversely. Cues and distractors were the same type of stimuli and differed only in their relation to the time of presentation of the target. Subjects performed in a directed response task and in a control detection task. It was predicted that the facilitatory effect of the cues and the interference effect of the distractors on the planning of the directed response would oppose each other and produce a non-monotonic change of RT across conditions. The results conformed to the prediction and, therefore, supported the hypothesis of independent effects of facilitation and interference. In addition, we found that the pattern of RT across conditions in the detection task differed radically with that in the directed response task. This result indicates that the time-dependent effects of cues and distractors are contingent on the type of motor response required in the task, and, in particular on the spatial requirement on the motor response. It is well known that a decrease in vigilance can easily occur during 24 h of continuous wakefulness, but no study has assessed whether and in what way extended wakefulness might affect spatial orienting. In other words, it is not clear what happens when a subject has to orient his attention during a state of poor vigilance, resulting from sleep loss or sustained wakefulness. The aim of this study was to investigate this issue. Twelve right-handed male subjects participated in the experiment, which took place on two consecutive days. On the first day, in order to evaluate baseline orienting attention, the subjects performed a covert orienting task (in which the cue stimuli generated endogenous shifts of attention), lasting 20 min; on the second day, during 24 h of prolonged wakefulness, the same task was performed 12 times, about every 120 min, beginning at 10.00 a.m. Results showed an overall slowing of reaction time across the sessions, indicating a linear decrease of vigilance. However, this vigilance decrease did not seem to affect attention-orienting mechanisms, suggesting that the two systems are independent of each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the effects of eye position on sound localization in normal and brain lesion subjects. On the assumption that cerebral lesions may disrupt the representation of or attention to auditory space in the contralesional hemispace, we predicted that subjects with brain lesions would be less accurate in localizing sounds in the contralesional hemispace. In Experiment 1 we showed that gazing to the midline subjects with brain lesions were indeed impaired in localizing sounds in the contralesional hemispace. On the assumption that spatial attention is deployed at the site to which gaze is directed, we predicted that sound localization would be better on the side to which subjects directed their gaze. In Experiment 2, brain lesion subjects performed significantly better in the contralesional hemispace when they directed gaze to that hemispace. This improvement was accompanied by deterioration of performance in the ipsilesional hemispace. When subjects directed gaze to the ipsilesional hemispace, performance in the contralesional hemispace was further impaired. The effect of gaze was also observed in normal subjects in Experiments 2 and 3, independently of response mode (verbal versus pointing responses). These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that sound location may be mapped in eye-centered coordinates and that directing gaze to one hemispace reduces attentional allocation to the other hemispace. In this study, we investigated the effect of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) on the latency of two different types of visually-guided vertical saccades: reflexive saccades triggered by the sudden onset of a target, and saccades towards target locations known in advance. For this reason, we used two oculomotor tasks: a gap and a delay task, respectively. Nine normal subjects performed vertical saccades at ±7.5 and ±15°. TMS was applied at 80 and 100 ms after target onset in the gap task, and after fixation offset in the delay task. Without TMS, we confirmed a latency asymmetry in the gap task favouring upward saccades at the lower eccentricity (7.5°), and a latency symmetry in the delay task. TMS increased the latencies of all saccades in the delay task, when delivered at 100 ms. This effect was mostly pronounced for downward saccades at 7.5°. As a result, saccade latencies showed an asymmetry in this condition, similar to the one observed in the gap task without TMS. The gap task with TMS resulted in a variable latency distribution and no significant overall effect on saccade latency. Our results indicate that the right PPC is involved in the initiation of vertical saccades in the delay task, and that this involvement appears to be enhanced for downward saccades. It has been shown that stimuli of a task-irrelevant modality receive enhanced processing when they are presented at an attended location in space (crossmodal attention). The present study investigated the effects of visual deprivation on the interaction of the intact sensory systems. Random streams of tactile and auditory stimuli were presented at the left or right index finger of congenitally blind participants. They had to attend to one modality (auditory or tactile) of one side (left or right) and had to respond to deviant stimuli of the attended modality and side. While in a group of sighted participants, early event-related potentials (ERPs) were negatively displaced to stimuli presented at the attended position, compared to the unattended, for both the task-relevant and the task-irrelevant modality, starting as early as 80 ms after stimulus onset (unimodal and crossmodal spatial attention effects, respectively), corresponding crossmodal effects could not be detected in the blind. In the sighted, spatial attention effects after 200 ms were only significant for the task-relevant modality, whereas a crossmodal effect for this late time window was observed in the blind. This positive rather than negative effect possibly indicates an active suppression of task-irrelevant stimuli at an attended location in space. The present data suggest that developmental visual input is essential for the use of space to integrate input of the non-visual modalities, possibly because of its high spatial resolution. Alternatively, enhanced perceptual skills of the blind within the intact modalities may result in reduced multisensory interactions (“inverse effectiveness of multisensory integration”). The facilitation of response known as the “gap effect” (a decrease of response latency), observed for saccades and antisaccades when attention is modulated prior to such eye movements, was studied in patients with schizophrenia and in controls. The hypothesis tested was whether patients would show a deficient attentional facilitation in response latency. Fifteen patients with schizophrenia and 17 healthy controls performed blocks of saccades and antisaccades in a “gap” condition and an “overlap” condition. Saccade and antisaccade response latencies as well as the error rate for antisaccades were measured for each subject. A similar gap effect (decrease in latency for the gap compared to the overlap condition) was present in the saccade task for patients and controls. In contrast the gap effect in the antisaccade task was absent in 50% of patients compared to none of the controls. This finding was interpreted as indicative of deficient preprocessing in antisaccade-specific cortical areas in schizophrenia (such as the prefrontal cortex), while visually guided saccade processing remained intact. Eight normal subjects made visually guided eye movements to four LED targets placed at two different distances (20 and 70 cm) and on either side (±10°) at 70 cm. Four types of eye movements were elicited: pure saccades, convergence, divergence, and combined (divergent saccades). EEG activity was recorded from 62 electrodes and was aligned to stimulus onset. A negativity peaked after 140 ms and was modulated according to the location of the stimulus in space and the type of movement prepared, mainly in central and posterior cortex. For saccade targets, we confirmed a stimulus-related negativity in the posterior and central cortical area, contralateral to target direction. For convergence and divergence targets, this negativity was bilaterally distributed; convergence targets activated a rather extended cortical network in the central and posterior area, while divergence targets activated a more confined posterior area, spreading ventrally from the occipital cortex. Cortical activity for combined targets was lateralised contralaterally to stimulus direction but its topography resembled more closely that after the divergence stimulus. When observers suppressed the relevant eye movement to the stimulus, EEG activity was enhanced on the right hemisphere, showing the more pronounced effect on the right occipital-temporal and central-parietal electrode sites. In five experiments we compared prosaccade and antisaccade performance in normal human observers. This was first examined for visual stimulation in temporal or nasal hemifields, under monocular viewing. Prosaccades were faster following temporal than nasal stimulation, in accordance with previous results. The novel finding was that the opposite pattern was observed for antisaccades, consistent with a difficulty in overcoming a stronger prosaccade tendency after temporal-hemifield stimulation. A second experiment showed that these results were not simply due to antisaccades following nasal stimulation benefitting from being made towards a temporal place-holder. Prosaccades and antisaccades were then compared for visual versus somatosensory stimulation. The substantial latency difference between prosaccades and antisaccades for visual stimuli was eliminated for somatosensory stimuli. Antisaccades can thus benefit in relative terms when the competing prosaccadic tendency is weakened; but two further experiments revealed that not all manipulations induce opposing outcomes for the two types of saccade. Although reducing the contrast of visual targets can slow prosaccades and conversely speed antisaccades, this was not the case at the lowest contrast level used, where both types of saccade were slowed, thus indicating some common limiting source. Moreover, warning sounds presented shortly before a visual target speeded both prosaccades and antisaccades. These results illustrate that several factors which slow prosaccades can speed antisaccades (consistent with competition between different pathways); but also reveal some notable exceptions, where both types of saccade are slowed or speeded together, suggesting some common pathways that may precede competition over the direction of the saccade. To investigate when and how spatial attention affects somatosensory processing, event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded in response to mechanical tactile stimuli delivered to the left and right hand while attention was directed to one of these hands. The attended hand either remained constant throughout an experimental block (sustained attention), or was changed across successive trials (transient attention). Attentional modulations of the N140 component and a sustained 'processing negativity' for attended stimuli were observed in both attention conditions. However, attentional effects on earlier somatosensory components differed systematically. Sustained attention resulted in a contralateral negativity overlapping with the N80 component, while transient attention was reflected by a bilateral positivity overlapping with the P100 component. This dissociation indicates that sustained and transient attention affect different somatosensory areas. It is suggested that sustained attention can modulate tactile processing within primary somatosensory cortex (S1), while effects of transient attention are located beyond S1. An increasing number of animal and human studies suggests that different sensory systems share spatial representations in the brain. The aim of the present study was to test whether attending to auditory stimuli presented at a particular spatial location influences the processing of tactile stimuli at that position and vice versa (crossmodal attention). Moreover, it was investigated which processing stages are influenced by orienting attention to a certain stimulus modality (intermodal attention). Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 15 participants while tactile and auditory stimuli were presented at the left or right side of the body midline. The task of the participants was to attend to either the auditory or to the tactile modality, and to respond to infrequent double-stimuli of either the left or right side. Results showed that spatial attention modulated both early and late somatosensory and auditory ERPs when touch and tones were relevant, respectively. Moreover, early somatosensory (N70–100, N125–175) and auditory (N100–170) potentials, but not later deflections, were affected by spatial attention to the other modality, suggesting bi-directional crossmodal links between hearing and touch. Additionally, ERPs were modulated by intermodal selection mechanisms: stimuli elicited enhanced negative early and late ERPs when they belonged to the attended modality compared to those that belonged to the unattended modality. The present results provide evidence for the parallel influence of spatial and intermodal selection mechanisms at early processing stages while later processing steps are restricted to the relevant modality. Large-field motion of the visual environment is a powerful stimulus to induce the perception of contra-directional self-motion in a stationary observer. We investigated the interrelations between horizontal optokinetic nystagmus and subjective states of motion perception under variation of subjects' orientation with respect to gravity. Subjects were tested sitting upright and lying supine, and signalled transitions between object- and self-motion perception whilst viewing an optokinetic stimulus rotating about the subjects' longitudinal axis at a range of angular velocities. Optokinetic stimulation in the supine condition resulted in subjects perceiving a graviceptive conflict and the illusory perception of whole body tilt in a direction opposite to optokinetic stimulus rotation, whereas during upright viewing the axis of stimulus rotation was aligned with the direction of gravity and thus did not result in a conflict or perception of tilt. In both postures, self-motion perception coincided with an increased deviation of mean horizontal gaze position in the perceived direction of heading with a concurrent reduction in optokinetic nystagmus slow-phase gain. Slow-phase gain was also significantly reduced in the supine position as well as at increasing stimulus velocities. The results demonstrate that spontaneous transitions between the perception of object-motion and that of self-motion consistently coincide with spatial attentional and orientational strategies, shifting from passive monitoring to active oculomotor exploration and anticipation. The control of attentional orienting was studied in children with specific reading disorder (SRD) or dyslexia, and it was compared with that of normal readers. We used the covert orienting paradigm to measure subjects' reaction times for target detection both in valid and invalid cue conditions, either in the left or in the right visual fields. In experiment 1, we investigated exogenous orienting. The cue consisted of a peripheral abrupt onset and the cue-target delay was 350 ms. As compared with normal readers, in dyslexics the cue effect was absent in the right visual field, whereas in the left visual field a greater cue effect was observed. No visual field asymmetry was found in normal readers. In experiment 2, we investigated endogenous orienting. The cue was shown centrally and the cue-target delay was 750 ms. In dyslexics and normal readers, orienting of attention was present in both visual fields. However, in the invalid condition, dyslexic children showed significantly slower reaction times in the left visual field than in the right visual field. These results were interpreted as being due to an asymmetric control of visual spatial attention, possibly related with a posterior attention mechanism deficit in the right parietal cortex and/or an interhemispheric dysfunction and/or an impairment of cerebellar functions. Left unilateral neglect is a neurological condition characterized by an impairment in orienting and responding to events occurring on the left side. To gain insight into the brain mechanisms of space processing and to provide theoretical foundations for patient rehabilitation, it is important to explore the attentional bias shown by neglect patients in the light of existing models of normal attentional orienting. Three experiments tested the hypothesis that attentional bias in neglect involves primarily exogenous, or stimulus-based, orienting of attention, with relatively preserved endogenous, or voluntary, orienting. Six patients with right hemisphere damage and left unilateral neglect and 18 age-matched participants without brain damage performed a cued reaction time (RT) task to targets which could appear in one of two lateral boxes. Cues consisted of a brief brightening of the contour of one of the boxes. The target followed the cue at 150, 550, or 1000 ms stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA). In experiment 1, the cues were not informative about the future location of the target, and thus elicited a purely exogenous orienting of attention. Controls showed slowed RTs to the cued locations at SOAs > 150 ms, consistent with the notion of inhibition of return (IOR). Neglect patients had no evidence of IOR for right targets; they showed a disproportionate cost for left targets preceded by right (invalid) cues; this cost was maximal at the shortest SOA, consistent with the idea of a biased exogenous orienting in neglect. In experiment 2, 80% of the cues were valid (i.e., they correctly predicted the location of the impending target), thus inducing an initially exogenous, and later endogenous, attentional shift toward the cued box. Neglect patients showed again a cost for left invalidly cued targets, which this time persisted at SOAs > 150 ms, as if patients' attention had been cued to the right side not only exogenously, but also endogenously, thus rendering more difficult an endogenous reorienting toward the left. In experiment 3, only 20% of the cues were valid, so that the best response strategy was to endogenously orient attention toward the box opposite to the cued one. Controls were able to take advantage of invalid cues to rapidly respond to targets. In this condition, neglect patients were able to nullify their spatial bias; they achieved their fastest RTs to left targets, which were in the range of their RTs to right targets. However, for neglect patients fast responses to left targets occurred only at 1000 ms SOA, while controls were able to redirect their attention to the uncued box already at 550 ms SOA. Research on visual attention has demonstrated that covert attention can be focused on particular locations within one hemifield, but that a specific "meridian" cost may also be found for shifting attention between hemifields. These issues have received less consideration for audition, even though reliable behavioral measures for the effects of spatial attention on hearing are now available. We examined the spatial distribution of covert attention in an auditory task following spatially non-predictive peripheral auditory cues (which should induce exogenous attention shifts), or following symbolic central cues that predicted the likely location for the auditory target (to induce endogenous attention shifts). In both cases, we found that attention can be focused not only on one hemifield versus another, but also within one hemifield in an auditory task. The present study investigated the spatial distribution of visual attention in dyslexic and normally reading children. The performances of the two groups were investigated using two different paradigms. In experiment 1 we analyzed the distribution of processing resources both inside and outside the focus of visual attention by simply recording reaction times to the detection of a white dot target projected at different eccentricities from the fovea. The distribution of attentional resources differed significantly between the two groups of children. The eccentricity of the stimulus was significant only for normally reading children – who showed a normal gradient – as it influenced their detection speed, whereas it had no effect on dyslexic children, who exhibited a diffused distribution of visual processing resources inside the visual field. In experiment 2 we studied the distributed (unfocused) mode of attention in a visual search task by measuring reaction times to a target stimulus inside a large configuration with a variable number of distractors. Results show that as compared to normal children dyslexics are better able to distribute their attentional resources diffusely. Our conclusion is that reading disability may be characterized by a diffused distribution of visual processing resources. These data might be interpreted in the framework of studies on magnocellular deficits in dyslexia, whereby the anomalous distribution of visual attention might explain how transient pathway functioning influences the reading process.
