A hermeneutic phenomenological analysis revealed that senior mental health practitioners experience their decisions as ‘terrifying,’ ‘weighty’ and ‘painful,’ feeling exposed, under scrutiny. This paper serves to introduce the readership to an approach to psychotherapy which is grounded in phenomenological and existential philosophy, one which I have extensively developed elsewhere. In it the intentionality and ontological relatedness of human experience is likened to a beam of light and human existence is seen as a projecting outwards that happens not solely in space, but even more so into the future, or through time. This paper undertakes an exploration of sexual orientation from an existential perspective in which the author makes her primary focus the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre and his ideas concerning freedom, facticity and bad faith. The essentialist vs. constructionist debate is visited briefly within the context of existentialism, and the author considers the relationship between the principles of 'gay affirmative' therapy and an existential-phenomenological approach. In the last issue of Existential Analysis, Helen Hayes offers an interesting exploration of 'migration, settlement and the meanings of home' (2007: 2- 16). Her paper provides a much-needed additional perspective to the ideas offered in my own article 'Existential Migration' (Madison, 2006). Hayes' references to my paper demonstrate the need for further elaboration and clarification in my original article and I take the opportunity here to offer some of that. I also want to suggest that there is a conventional settled-centric bias inherent in our understanding of migration but more so, to suggest that our thinking in general is too 'settled'.
