An abstract is presented of the article "Exercise or Exercise and Diet for Preventing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus" by L. J. Orozco et al. which appeared in a 2008 issue of "Cochrane Database Systematic Review" along with a brief commentary on the abstract.

The article highlights a study on the effects of aerobic training, resistance training, or both on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes. For this study, a randomised controlled trial was held with a follow-up period of 6 months. 251 patients who had type 2 diabetes participated in the study which was held in 8 community-based exercise facilities in Canada. It was found that combined aerobic and resistance training was more effective than either alone for such individuals.

The article reviews a study which examined the association of exercise with reduced glycated hemoglobin concentrations, plasma triglyceride concentrations and visceral adipose tissue among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Body mass or body mass index, cholesterol concentrations or blood pressure did not show any difference with exercise or without exercise.
