OBJECTIVE: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease with the potential to cause blindness, primarily affecting premature infants with low birth weight. This study analyzed the etiology, primary location, and research advances in ROP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used bibliometric techniques and searched the Web of Science Core Collection for "retinopathy of prematurity." We found 4,018 original articles and reviews with 69,819 references. We analyzed the data using HistCite (12.03.17), VOSviewer (1.6.16), CiteSpace (6.1. R5), and the Bibliometrix Package (4.1.0). RESULTS: The amount of literature in this area has increased between 2001-2021. An analysis of references and journal co-citations highlights this field's most influential articles and related topics. Hellström, from the University of Gothenburg (Sweden), is the most prolific researcher; Harvard University is the most prolific research institution, and the USA is the most productive country. "Threshold ROP" and "cryotherapy" are the keywords with the highest burst strength. The future research hotspots are artificial intelligence, zone II, ROP development, ranibizumab, and type 1 retinopathy. CONCLUSIONS: This article offers a comprehensive review of the present status of ROP research, along with insights into emerging concepts and potential international collaborations in this field. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the impact of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways and the reduced use of opioids on postoperative outcomes in elderly colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia (GA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical data from 99 elderly patients who underwent laparoscopic CRC surgery in the First Affiliated Hospital of Hebei North University from April 2021 to April 2023 were retrospectively analyzed and grouped based on the method of pain control measures received. Of 99 patients, 51 received conventional doses of opioid drugs (conventional group), and 48 patients were treated with reduced doses of opioids based on the principles of ERAS (lowdose group). Perioperative characteristics, postoperative pain level, cognitive function, serum biochemical index levels, and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The first exhaust time, defecation time, and bedtime activity time of the low-dose group were compared to the conventional group (p<0.05). On the first day after the surgery, the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) score of the low-dose group was higher than the conventional group (p<0.05). After the surgery, the levels of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) decreased in both groups, while the levels of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) increased. However, compared to the conventional group, the low-dose group had higher levels of BDNF and lower levels of NSE and 5-HT (p<0.05). The incidence of adverse reactions in the low-dose group was lower than that in the conventional group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: ERAS protocol and the reduced use of opioid drugs in CRC patients who underwent surgery under GA is associated with an analgesic effect that is comparable to that of conventional opioid use. Reduced dosage of opioid drugs lessened cognitive impairment and lowered the incidence of adverse reactions in surgical patients with CRC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: The function of MDR3 is important in bile acid transport. The miRNAs can suppress the expression of gene through combining mRNA of target gene. The regulation about MDR3 mediated by FXR or PPARα in cholestasis is clear, but the mechanism through miRNA is hardly reported. We aimed to find out the miRNA, which could suppress MDR3 expression and the significance of this connection in cholestasis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We measured hsa-miR-378a-5p expression level in liver tissues from 20 patients with cholestasis and 15 patients without cholestasis by quantitative PCR. We also tested the level of clinical features of the same group. HepG2 cell lines were performed experiments to discover the connection between hsa-miR-378a-5p and MDR3, including transient transfection, RNA and protein extraction, qPCR, Western blotting and luciferase reporter assay. RESULTS: A significant decrease of miR-378a-5p was observed in obstructive cholestasis patient liver tissues compared to control group. We also find that the miR-378a-5p expression is correlated to several clinical features, which are important biomarkers in cholestatic liver injury. Then we predicted that MDR3 may be the target gene of miR-378a-5p through miRanda v3.3a. We programed the transient transfection of mimics and inhibitor on HepG2 cell lines, and detected the mRNA and protein expression of MRP2, MRP3 and MDR3. The results suggested that miR-378a-5p could negatively regulate MDR3 expression in both mRNA and protein expression level, and this regulation is specific. We didn't find same regulation in MRP2 and MRP3. Dual luciferase assays proved this regulation is mediated by a direct binding between miR-378a-5p and CDS of MDR3. CONCLUSIONS: We found that hsa-miR-378a-5p expression was down-regulated in cholestatic liver tissues, compared to control liver tissues. Transient transfection and luciferase reporter assay in HepG2 cell lines results suggest that hsamiR- 378a-5p can directly combine MDR3 mRNA and suppress MDR3 protein expression. The down-regulated hsa-miR-378a-5p may cause a protective alteration through up-regulating MDR3 expression in cholestasis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: MiRNAs have been considered to participate in many processes of various cancers, including gastric cancer (GC). However, the significance of miRNAs in the progression prognosis of GC is largely unknown. The goal of this study was to determine the expression level of miR-1236-3p in GC and its clinical association. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical specimens from GC patients were obtained to quantify the expression level of miR-1236-3p using quantitative Real-time PCR. The correlation between the miR-1236-3p levels and the clinicopathological factors of the GC patients was analyzed. The association between miR-1236-3p expression and overall survival was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. The significance of different variables with respect to survival was analyzed using the univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: We found that miR-1236-3p was significantly downregulated in GC tissues compared to non-tumor gastric tissues (p < 0.01). The levels of miR-1236-3p expression were associated significantly with clinical stage (p = 0.002), lymph node metastasis (p = 0.000) and distant metastasis (p = 0.017). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that patients in the high miR-1236-3p expression group had better overall survival than those in the low miR-1236-3p expression group (p = 0.0039). Moreover, we confirmed that miR-1236-3p was an independent poor prognostic factor for GC patients through univariate and multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide evidence that miR-1236-3p expression is frequently decreased in GC tissues, and its low expression may be a significant prognostic factor for poor survival in GC patients. OBJECTIVE: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is the second most common phakomatosis and is characterized by the formation of benign hamartomas and low-grade neoplasms in multiple organ systems. In this study, our objective here was to explore the interaction and crosstalk between pathways in response to tuberous sclerosis complex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enriched the significant pathways and made the crosstalk analysis of the significant pathways. RESULTS: The results showed that ECM-receptor interaction was a significant pathway in TSC. In addition, insulin-signaling and mTOR signaling also have been identified involved in TSC here, which have been well characterized. Further analysis indicated that there was a crosstalk between ECM-receptor interaction and antigen processing and presentation, ECM-receptor interaction and apoptosis, and leishmaniasis-oxidative phosphorylation-pancreatic cancer. In this study, a network-based approach was used to analyze the crosstalk among TSC related pathways. The crosstalk of pathways is found and analyzed using the PPI datasets and expression profiles. CONCLUSIONS: Our work showed that comprehensive and system-wide analysis could provide evidence for TSC pathway and complement the traditional component-based approaches.
