Pedology focuses on understanding soil genesis in the field and includes soil classification and mapping. Digital soil mapping (DSM) has evolved from traditional soil classification and mapping to the creation and population of spatial soil information systems by using field and laboratory observations coupled with environmental covariates. Pedological knowledge of soil distribution and processes can be useful for digital soil mapping. Conversely, digital soil mapping can bring new insights to pedogenesis, detailed information on vertical and lateral soil variation, and can generate research questions that were not considered in traditional pedology. This review highlights the relevance and synergy of pedology in soil spatial prediction through the expansion of pedological knowledge. We also discuss how DSM can support further advances in pedology through improved representation of spatial soil information. Some major findings of this review are as follows: (a) soil classes can be mapped accurately using DSM, (b) the occurrence and thickness of soil horizons, whole soil profiles and soil parent material can be predicted successfully with DSM techniques, (c) DSM can provide valuable information on pedogenic processes (e.g. addition, removal, transformation and translocation), (d) pedological knowledge can be incorporated into DSM, but DSM can also lead to the discovery of knowledge, and (e) there is the potential to use process‐based soil–landscape evolution modelling in DSM. Based on these findings, the combination of data‐driven and knowledge‐based methods promotes even greater interactions between pedology and DSM. HIGHLIGHTS: Demonstrates relevance and synergy of pedology in soil spatial prediction, and links pedology and DSM. Indicates the successful application of DSM in mapping soil classes, profiles, pedological features and processes. Shows how DSM can help in forming new hypotheses and gaining new insights about soil and soil processes. Combination of data‐driven and knowledge‐based methods recommended to promote greater interactions between DSM and pedology.

Summary The soils and sediments of the uplands in the Manaus region are described and analysed along a representative cross-section. There are two broad types of features, lateritic and redoximorphic. Their formation is linked to two main processes acting under contrasted hydrological regimes. The first process, acting under well-drained conditions, is lateritization. It has transformed strongly weathered sediment into soil and led to depletion of silica (mainly quartz) as well as to relative accumulation of both kaolinite and iron oxides (haematite and goethite). Crystallographic changes observed in the latter have resulted from alternating dissolution and crystallization cycles without significant transfer of iron and alumina. However, in the uppermost soil, dissolution of kaolinite has prevailed over crystallization, leading to depletion of clay and the formation of tiny crystals of gibbsite disseminated throughout the groundmass. The second process results from the development of reducing conditions in groundwater giving redoximorphic features in lateritic soils and sediments. In the sediments, iron has been depleted by regional aquifers to form a pallid zone. In the soil, large amounts of iron and minor amounts of alumina, mainly from aluminous goethite, have been mobilized at first in small patches, which with further mobilization and vertical transfer of these elements have increased in size and have led to the formation of bleached horizons over thin iron pans. Iron has crystallized predominantly as haematite in the iron pans and alumina as large crystals of gibbsite in soil voids. Formation of impervious iron pans holds up fluctuating perched groundwater in the overlying horizons depending on rainfall events. Neotectonic events (formation of uplifted blocks and small grabens) have markedly altered the hydrological regimes. In the uplifted blocks, the soil has been deeply truncated and iron loss has been checked in the uppermost sediment. By contrast, mobilization of iron has been initiated at various places in the soil of the small grabens. In this way tectonic events have checked mobilization of iron in sediments but activated it in soils, leaving spectacular fingerprints on the landscape.

Soil profiles under beech, spruce and a grassland have been analysed to study the evolution of natural n-alkanes in pollution-free ecosystems. The soils had all developed on granitic bedrock, at an altitude of 1300-1500 m in the region of Mont-Lozere (southern Massif-Central, France). In contrast to the grassland soil, the two forest soils both possessed a well-developed acidic moder humus-type horizon. This could be subdivided as follows: fresh litter (OL), fragmentation (OF) and humification (OH) layers; two litters, one fresh (OL1) and one old (OL2) could actually be distinguished in the beech forest soil. The n-alkane signature of the parent plants was preserved in the top litter. Immediately underneath, in the OF layer(s) the original il-alkane signatures were progressively but rapidly replaced by a common signature composed of n-C-27 and n-C-25 With larger proportions of the former than of the latter. These two hydrocarbons were most probably produced in situ by fungi. These results appear to illustrate the action of soil microorganisms which metabolize the inherited n-alkanes and produce new compounds of the same family. Unlike the alkanes and the low molecular weight fatty acids less than or equal to C-20 (which increase greatly in the OL2 layer under beech as a result of intense microbial activity), the heavy fatty acids (>C-20) show no significant change in the organic horizon.

Summary Burning vegetation produces partly charred plant material which subsequently could contribute to the highly refractory proportion of soil organic matter. The presence of charred organic carbon (COC) was investigated in 17 horizons originating from nine soils from Germany and the Netherlands using a suite of complementary methods (high-energy ultraviolet photo-oxidation, scanning electron microscopy, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, lignin analysis by CuO oxidation). Charred organic carbon could not be detected in the A horizons of an Alisol and a Gleysol, but it contributed up to 45% of the organic carbon and up to about 8 g kg–1 of the soil in a range of grey to black soils (Cambisol, Luvisol, Phaeozem, Chernozem and Greyzem). All these soils have chernozemic soil properties (dark colour, A–C profile, high base saturation, bioturbation). A 10-km colour sequence of four chernozemic soils, which were very similar in chemical and physical properties, showed a strong relation between colour and the content of COC. This suggests that the COC affects mainly soil colour in the sequence studied. Finely divided COC seems to be a major constituent of many chernozemic soils in Germany. These results suggest that besides climate, vegetation and bioturbation, fire has played an important role in the pedogenesis of chernozemic soils.

Summary Terre Rosse and Rendzinas occur on limestones close together under the same climatic conditions. Their differences in iron oxide mineralogy are believed to be due to differences in the pedoclimate. We monitored the soil moisture tension and the soil temperature over nearly 3 years in Terra Rossa-Rendzina pairs on hard limestone and soft chalk in Israel. The Terre Rosse dried out more rapidly than the Rendzinas mainly because of their smaller water-holding capacity. In summer, average soil temperatures in the Rendzinas were significantly lower than in the Terre Rosse. Haematite dominates the red Terre Rosse and goethite the yellower Rendzinas. This difference appears to be related to the soil climate, specifically the moisture regime of the two soils, and supports the hypothesis that release of Fe and formation of ferrihydrite in Terre Rosse during the wet winter is followed by transformation to haematite during marked desiccation in the dry summer. By contrast, wetter soil conditions in the Rendzinas direct the formation of Fe oxides more towards goethite. either directly or by transformation of ferrihydrite via solution.

Summary Cryptopodzolic Soils are characterized by a thick blackish-brown mineral horizon rich in organic matter, the dark colour of which masks the morphological characteristics of podzolization. Little is known about the specific site factors that lead to the formation of these soils. Four representative soil profiles from a typical toposequence between 1700 and 500 m above sea level in southern Switzerland, embracing Haplic Podzols, Humic Cambisols and Cryptopodzolic Soils, are described morphologically, chemically and physically. The Cryptopodzolic Soils in this region are characterized by weak to moderate A1 and Fe translocation, and by a uniform incorporation of organic matter deep into the soil. The most prominent feature is the exceptional stability of the soil organic matter with a maximum in the spodic horizon. All these characteristics can be explained by the unique combined effect of a mild, wet climate, an Fe- and Al-rich acid bedrock and a litter layer providing dissolved organic matter rich in polyphenolic substances with strong metal-binding properties.
