This study evaluated the effect on adhesive layer thickness, bond strength, and adhesive failure pattern of the application of universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal) using either manual or rotary brush in dentin previously impregnated with bioceramic sealer (Sealer Plus BC) using a manual brush, at 24 h and 1 year. Eighty‐eight bovine crowns were divided into four groups (n = 22) according to the intervention: (i) use of bioceramic sealer and adhesive application using manual brush, (ii) use of bioceramic sealer and adhesive application using rotary brush, (iii) use of resin sealer and adhesive application using manual brush, and (iv) use of resin sealer and adhesive application using rotary brush. Subsequently, specimens were restored with a composite resin (Filtek Z‐250). Adhesive layer thickness was evaluated using confocal microscopy. Bond strength was assessed using the microtensile bond strength test, and adhesive failure pattern was evaluated under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using two‐way ANOVA/Tukey tests. Specimens where a rotary brush had been used exhibited lower adhesive layer thickness. Specimens treated with resin sealer and using a manual brush showed lower bond strength values and a higher occurrence of adhesive failures at 24 h and 1 year than specimens treated with bioceramic sealer and using rotary brush for adhesive application. This study evaluated the effects of irrigating solutions containing 5% boric acid + 1% citric acid or 1% peracetic acid + high concentration hydrogen peroxide on root cleaning and bond strength of cementation systems after 24 h and 6 months of glass fiber post cementation. One hundred and twenty roots were endodontically treated. The specimens were randomized into one of four treatments (n = 10): DW (distilled water); NaOCl2.5% + EDTA17% (2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution + 17% EDTA); PA1% + HP (1% peracetic acid solution + high concentration of hydrogen peroxide); BA5% + CA1% (5% boric acid associated with 1% citric acid). The cleaning efficacy in the cervical, middle, and apical thirds of the post‐space, and the push‐out bond strength at 24 h and 6 months after post cementation were evaluated by Kruskal‐Wallis and two‐way ANOVA tests, respectively. BA5% + CA1% showed statistically significantly superior cleaning efficacy compared to the other solutions. This irrigation protocol also resulted in higher bond strength at 24 h and 6 months, regardless of the root third considered, and this was statistically significantly higher than those seen for DW and PA1% + HP. For BA5% + CA1% irrigation protocol, type 1 adhesive failure was the most prevalent. Post‐space irrigation with BA5% + CA1% provided both higher cleaning efficacy and better bond strength. The aim of this study was to compare the marginal and internal adaptation of three‐unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) fabricated from different metal‐free materials using CAD/CAM methods. A total of 100 three‐unit FDPs were produced from a cubic zirconia, a fiber‐reinforced resin composite, a polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), and a polymer composite material by the CAD/CAM method (n = 20 per material). The zirconia group was considered the control/reference material. Marginal and internal gap values of the produced FDPs were measured using the silicone replica method at ×40 magnification under a stereomicroscope. The obtained data were analyzed using one‐way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD tests. The marginal and internal gap values for the cubic zirconia material were found to be statistically significantly lower than those seen for the PEEK, polymer composite, PEKK, and fiber‐reinforced resin composite materials. While the marginal and internal adaptation of the cubic zirconia material was found to be better than the others, it should be noted that the marginal and internal gap values for all other materials tested were found to be within the clinically acceptable range. Mechanical stress generated by orthodontic force is recognized as a major factor in the modulation of alveolar bone remodeling. During this process, osteoblasts play a crucial role, not only by participating in bone formation but also by promoting osteoclastogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate how continuous compressive force ( CF) affects human primary osteoblasts ( HOBs) in terms of cell proliferation, apoptosis, and expression of interleukin-6 ( IL-6) and chemokine CXC ligand 8 ( CXCL8). Human primary osteoblasts, isolated from human mandibular bone pieces, were cultured with or without CF (1-4 g cm−2) for up to 72 h. Cell viability and proliferation were evaluated using the MTT assay. RT-PCR was used to determine the levels of expression of KI67 (a proliferation marker), BAX (a pro-apoptotic marker), BCL2 (an apoptotic inhibitor), IL6, and CXCL8 mRNAs, while a multiplexed bead immunoassay was used to measure the release of IL-6 and CXCL8. The results revealed that CF decreased cell viability and proliferation in a time- and force-dependent manner. After applying CF for 24 h, the mRNA expression of KI67 was markedly inhibited, whereas the mRNA expression of BAX and BCL2 was unaltered. In addition, CF enhanced the levels of IL6 and CXCL8 mRNAs in a force-dependent manner, whereas the levels of the corresponding proteins were reduced in the compressed HOBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This in vitro study aimed to investigate the anti-erosive effect of antacid suspensions applied to enamel after exposure to hydrochloric acid ( HCl). Ninety bovine enamel slabs were embedded, flattened, and polished. Reference areas were created and specimens were divided into six groups. They were exposed to 0.01 M HCl ( pH 2) for 2 min, followed by immersion for 1 min in one of the following test suspensions: magnesium hydroxide, aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide/aluminum hydroxide, sodium alginate/sodium bicarbonate/calcium carbonate, or hydrated magnesium aluminate. Artificial saliva was used as a negative control. Specimens were subjected to a total of five cycles of erosion/antacid treatment. Enamel surface loss was measured (in micrometers) by optical profilometry. In addition, baseline and final surface microhardness (SMH) values of enamel were obtained. It was found that antacid suspensions significantly reduced enamel loss, and that similar protection was afforded by all formulations. No differences were observed between the final enamel SMH values among groups. Antacid suspensions counteracted HCl-induced enamel loss, although they were not effective in reducing enamel softening. Delta-like 1 homolog ( Dlk1) and insulin-like growth factor 2 ( Igf2) are two of six well-studied mouse imprinted gene clusters that are paternally expressed. Their expression is also linked to their maternally expressed non-coding RNAs, encoded by Gene trap locus 2 ( Gtl2) and Imprinted maternally expressed transcript ( H19), co-located as imprinted gene clusters. Using deoxyoligonucleotide microarrays and real-time RT- PCR analysis we showed Dlk1 and Gtl2 to exhibit a time-course of expression during tooth development that was similar to that of Igf2 and H19. Western blot analysis of proteins encoded by Dlk1 and Igf2 suggested that the levels of these proteins reflected those of the corresponding m RNAs. Immunohistochemical studies of DLK1 in murine molars detected the protein in both epithelial and mesenchymal regions, in developing cusp mesenchyme, and in newly synthesized enamel and dentin tubules. IGF2 protein was detected primarily at prenatal stages, suggesting that it may be active before birth. Analysis of methylation of cytosine-phosphate-guanine ( Cp G) islands in both Dlk1 and Igf2 suggested the presence of an increasing fraction of hypermethylated bases with increasing time of development. The increased levels of hypermethylation coincided both with the diminished levels of expression of Dlk1 and Igf2 and with decreased levels of DLK1 and IGF2 proteins in the tooth germ, suggesting that their expression is regulated via methylation of Cp G islands present in these genes. Bruxism may be involved in the aetiology of myofascial neck pain. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that anterior and posterior neck muscles co-contract during jaw clenching. Ten test subjects developed different feedback-controlled submaximum bite forces in a variety of bite-force directions by means of bite-force transducers. The electromyographic activity of the sternocleidomastoid and supra/infrahyoidal muscles, and of the semispinalis capitis, semispinalis cervicis, and multifidi muscles was recorded by use of surface electrodes and intramuscular wire electrodes, respectively. For normalization of electromyography data, maximum voluntary contraction tasks of the neck muscles were conducted in eight different loading directions. The results confirmed co-contraction of the neck muscles in the range of 2-14% of the maximum voluntary contraction at a bite force ranging from 50 to 300 N. Significant activity differences were observed as a result of the different force levels and force directions exerted by the jaw muscles. Long-lasting tonic activation of specific neck muscles triggered by the jaw-clenching tasks was also detected. These findings support the assumption of a relationship between jaw clenching and the activity of the neck muscles investigated. The low level of co-contraction activity, however, requires further study to elucidate possible pathophysiological interactions at the level of single motor units. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Streptococcus mutans is a key contributor to dental caries. Smokers have a higher number of caries-affected teeth than do nonsmokers, but the association among tobacco, nicotine, caries, and S. mutans growth has not been investigated in detail. Seven S. mutans strains - UA159, UA130, 10449, A32-2, NG8, LM7, and OMZ175 - were used in the present study. The minimum inhibitory concentration ( MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration ( MBC), minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration ( MBIC), planktonic cell growth, biofilm formation, metabolism, and structure (determined using scanning electron microscopy) of the seven strains treated with different concentrations of nicotine (0-32 mg ml−1) were investigated. The MIC, MBC, and MBIC were 16 mg ml−1 (0.1 M), 32 mg ml−1 (0.2 M), and 16 mg ml−1 (0.1 M), respectively, for most of the S. mutans strains. Growth of planktonic S. mutans cells was significantly repressed by 2.0-8.0 mg ml−1 of nicotine. Biofilm formation and metabolic activity of S. mutans was increased in a nicotine-dependent manner up to 16.0 mg ml−1 of nicotine. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that S. mutans treated with a high concentration of nicotine a had thicker biofilm and more spherical bacterial cells. In summary, nicotine enhances S. mutans biofilm formation and biofilm metabolic activity. These results suggest that smoking can increase the development of caries by fostering increased formation of S. mutans biofilm on tooth surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated the effect of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) formulations on enamel carious demineralization in situ. Thirteen subjects took part in this cross-over, split-mouth, double-blind study performed in three phases of 14 d each. In each subject, two sound and two predemineralized specimens of bovine enamel were worn intra-orally and plaque accumulation was allowed. One sound and one predemineralized specimen in each subject was treated once with sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish or solution (Treatment A); TiF4 varnish or solution (Treatment B); or placebo varnish or no treatment (Treatment C). The initially sound enamel specimens were exposed to severe cariogenic challenge (20% sucrose, eight times daily for 5 min each time), whereas the predemineralized specimens were not. Eleven subjects were able to finish all experimental phases. The enamel alterations were quantified by surface hardness and transversal microradiography. Demineralization of previously sound enamel was reduced by all test formulations except for the NaF solution, while both TiF4 formulations were as effective as NaF varnish. For the predemineralized specimens, enamel surface hardness was increased only by TiF4 formulations, while subsurface mineral remineralization could not be seen in any group. Within the experimental protocol, TiF4 was able to decrease enamel demineralization to a similar degree as NaF varnish under severe cariogenic challenges, while only TiF4 formulations remineralized the enamel surface. The aim was to analyze oral health-related perceptions, attitudes, and behavior in relation to oral hygiene conditions among 19-yr-old Swedish subjects. A random sample of 506 individuals was clinically examined regarding oral hygiene conditions and provided questionnaire-based information on oral health-related perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors. Higher scores of plaque and gingivitis were significantly related to the following perceptions: (i) a less favorable oral health situation, (ii) a lower satisfaction with the esthetic appearance of the teeth, (iii) more frequent gingival bleeding during toothbrushing, (iv) less favorable self-care of the teeth, (v) a lower possibility to impact on own oral health, (vi) a lower importance of cleaning the teeth, and (vii) a lower importance of good oral health conditions. More favorable oral hygiene conditions and more positive perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors towards oral health were found among female subjects than among male subjects. In conclusion, adolescents with high scores of plaque and gingivitis had less positive perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors towards oral health than those with more favorable oral hygiene conditions. A major goal of motor coordination is the production of a smooth movement. Jerk-cost, which is an inverse measure of movement smoothness, has been evaluated during gum chewing in previous studies. However, the effect of the gum bolus is still unclear. The aims of this study were to compare the jerk-cost values of normal gum chewing with those of empty chewing. Thirteen subjects undertook, empty chewing, then chewing of gum, and then a second empty chewing. Jerk-cost was calculated from an accelerometer attached to the skin of the mentum. There was a significantly higher smoothness (i.e. lower jerk-cost, P < 0.05) during the opening and second-half closing phases in empty chewing compared with gum chewing. There were no significant differences in jerk-costs (i.e. opening or closing) between the first and the second empty-chewing sequences. These results suggest that the influence of the mechanical effects of tooth contact on jerk-cost is not restricted just to the occlusal phase of chewing, but rather the effect influences the entire opening and closing phases of chewing. Eur J Oral Sci 2012; 120: 255-258. © 2012 Eur J Oral Sci Ankylosed teeth are considered in orthodontic treatment planning; however, diagnostic tools to quantify the rigidity of the tooth-to-bone connection are rare. Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) can quantify the rigidity of the dental implant-to-bone connection and thus may serve as a potential diagnostic tool to identify ankylosed teeth. To test this assumption, we examined 15 and 30 primary mandibular molars, with and without clinical signs of ankylosis, using the Osstell Mentor system. A cut-off implant stability quotient (ISQ) of 43 provided a specificity of 100% and a sensitivity of 53.3% when measured in the mesio-distal direction or a sensitivity of 20% when measured in the bucco-lingual direction. Based on a receiver-operating characteristic (ROC), the area under the curve (AUC) of 0.807 showed the mesio-distal direction of measurement to be a test of moderate discriminatory power. Given its non-invasiveness, RFA may serve as a quantitative diagnostic supplement to the clinical examination of potentially ankylosed primary molars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eur J Oral Sci 2012; 120: 249-254. © 2012 Eur J Oral Sci The aim of the present investigation was to study the influence of grain size on the strength of yttria-stabilized zirconia upon exposure to an additional heat treatment, mimicking the veneering process. The green bodies of zirconia discs prepared by cold isostatic pressing were sintered at 1,425, 1,500, or 1,575°C to customize the grain size. The disc-shaped specimens were highly polished and then processed with or without additional heat treatments (five times at 850-930°C). Ten specimens from each treatment group were subjected to a biaxial flexural strength test according to the ISO 6872 standard. The grain size of the specimens was analyzed by the mean linear intercept technique using scanning electron microscopy. It was demonstrated that the mechanical strength of zirconia ceramics was not reduced by the veneer firing processes when polished specimens were used, but the strength was found to decrease with increasing grain size. The raw materials and the sintering process used should be selected appropriately to avoid grain coarsening because it was found that the strength was influenced by large grains. Eur J Oral Sci 2012; 120: 224-231. © 2012 Eur J Oral Sci Personality is one of the strongest predictors of subjective well-being and may, according to a few previous studies, affect how people report oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Alexithymia, a personality trait involving difficulties in emotional regulation, is associated with poorer health-related quality of life in the general population. We studied if alexithymia is also associated with poorer OHRQoL in a general population sample of 4,460 adults. Oral health-related quality of life was measured using the 14-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and alexithymia was measured using the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Controlling for clinically assessed dental health, depression, anxiety, and socio-demographic variables, higher scores on the TAS-20 as well as on its three dimensions [difficulties in identifying feelings (DIF), difficulties in describing feelings (DDF), and externally oriented thinking (EOT)] were associated with higher OHIP-14 composite scores according to Poisson regression analyses. In adjusted logistic regression analyses, the TAS-20 and two of its dimensions (DIF and DDF) were positively and significantly associated with the seven OHIP-14 dimensions and the prevalence of those reporting one or more OHIP-14 items fairly often or very often. The study showed that difficulties in emotional regulation might be reflected in poorer OHRQoL, regardless of the dental health status, depression, anxiety, and socio-demographic variables. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 455-462. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci This study aimed to investigate the association between microbial consortia and the clinical features of periodontitis using a multilevel modeling approach. A total of 958 sites in 87 adolescents with periodontitis (cases) and 73 controls were microbiologically sampled and clinically examined. Associations between each of the clinical parameters clinical attachment, probing depth, supragingival plaque, calculus, bleeding on probing, and each of 18 bacterial species; and between the same clinical parameters and each of two microbial consortia identified, were investigated using mixed-effects regression modeling. Higher counts of Tannerella forsythia, Campylobacter rectus, and Porphyromonas gingivalis were all statistically significantly associated with higher values of clinical attachment level, probing depth, and bleeding on probing in the sampled site, when both case status and between-subject variance were accounted for. Higher counts for the consortium comprising the putative periodontopathogens were statistically significantly associated in a dose-response manner with both higher clinical attachment levels and with increased pocket depth. The counts for the consortium predominantly comprising the early-colonizer species were statistically significantly negatively associated with the presence of supragingival calculus, but positively associated with the presence of supragingival plaque. The study demonstrates a relationship between the counts of putative periodontopathogens and clinical attachment levels and probing pocket depths, even for low levels of these clinical parameters. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 435-440. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci Glycoprotein 340 (gp-340) is a bacterial-binding glycoprotein found in major-gland and minor-gland saliva. Sialic acid, a common terminal structure of salivary glycoproteins, interacts with microorganisms and host ligands, as well as with free radicals. This study investigated the contents of gp-340 and sialic acid in minor-gland saliva and whole saliva of children (3 yr of age), adolescents (14 yr of age), and adults (20-25 yr of age). Labial-gland saliva and buccal-gland saliva were collected on filter paper, and unstimulated whole saliva was collected by draining into a tube. The relative amount of gp-340 and sialic acid was determined by ELISA and by enzyme-linked lectin assay (ELLA), respectively. In minor-gland saliva, no statistically significant differences in gp-340 and sialic acid were seen between the age-groups. Among adults, significantly lower amounts of gp-340 and sialic acid were seen in labial saliva compared with buccal saliva. In whole saliva, the amount of gp-340 was significantly lower among adults compared with children. No differences between genders were seen. Stable content of gp-340 and sialic acid in minor-gland saliva across the age-groups, and a higher content of gp-340 in the whole saliva of the youngest age-group (3-yr-olds) compared with the adult group, may reflect that those components are vital innate factors of immunity in children's saliva. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 418-426. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci Occlusion is commenced by contact of a tooth with an opposing tooth and is the mechanical force working against the periodontal ligament (PDL). However, the influences of occlusion during root development remain uncertain. By extracting the unerupted counterpart molars of rats, we established a non-occlusal model that directly examined the effects of the absence of occlusion in developing molars using micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) and histological procedures. The μ-CT data for experimental molars confirmed no attrition and hypogenesis of the alveolar bone. Root lengths in experimental groups increased more than in control groups. Histological findings of experimental molars showed a wide crown pulp, a long and narrow root, immature Sharpey's fibers, and hypogenesis of cementum. Proliferating cells localized in Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS), the apical pulp, and the PDL of experimental teeth. Furthermore, cell-proliferative activity in experimental roots exceeded that in normal roots. These data indicate that cell proliferation is decreased by occlusion during root formation. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 441-446. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci It has been suggested that the use of alcohol-containing mouthrinses could lead to the presence of acetaldehyde in saliva. In this cross-over study, salivary acetaldehyde levels and microbial profiles were determined before and after rinsing with ethanol-containing mouthrinses with essential oils (EO) and cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC) as the active ingredients, and with 21.6% ethanol and water controls. After rinsing with all ethanol-containing rinses, acetaldehyde was detected in saliva after 30 s but declined to low levels after 5 min. The highest peak levels were seen with the ethanol control (median = 82.9 μM at 2 min) and were significantly higher than those seen at the same time after rinsing with the EO rinse (43.1 μM). There was no correlation between microbial counts or plaque scores and acetaldehyde levels, although dividing the subjects on the basis of a peak acetaldehyde salivary concentration of > 90.8 μM after the ethanol rinse revealed that the high responders were highly significantly more likely to harbour salivary yeasts than were the low responders. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 463-468. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci In this study, associations were explored between maternal health and lifestyle during pregnancy and in early motherhood, and preschool children's caries experience. The study was based on the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and on data from the Public Dental Services. A total of 1348 children were followed from pregnancy to age 5 yr. A clinical dental examination was performed at age 5 yr. Questionnaires were completed by the mothers during pregnancy and in the first 18 months of their child's life, and as part of the dental examination. Results from the multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that having an obese mother (OR = 2.3, 95% CI: 1.3-4.1), a mother who consumed a diet containing more fat (OR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.1-2.5) or sugar (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.1-2.3) than recommended, a mother with low education (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.1-2.3) or one or both parents of non-western origin (OR = 5.4, 95% CI: 2.8-10.6) were statistically significant risk indicators for caries experience at age 5 yr. In conclusion, maternal weight and intake of sugar and fat in pregnancy were associated with caries experience in preschool children. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 469-473. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci The aim was to assess associations of general and oral health perceptions, and the impact of general and oral health functional problems on general health perceptions. Data were collected from adults, 60-71 yr of age in 2008, and included global self-ratings of general and oral health, Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) scores, and health problem scores [using the five items from the EuroQol instrument (EQ-5D)]. Responses were collected from 444 subjects (response rate = 68.8%). Self-rated general and oral health showed fair to good agreement (kappa = 0.47). Adjusted estimates of self-rated general health showed that worse ratings were associated with lower social status [prevalence ratio (PR) = 0.42] and with more health problems (PR = 0.64). Adjusted estimates of self-rated oral health also showed that worse ratings were associated with lower social status (PR = 0.48) and with more health problems (PR = 0.63), as well as with higher OHIP scores (PR = 0.21). The interaction of health problems and OHIP scores was significant for self-rated general health, with self-rated general health being worse when both health problems and OHIP score were higher. For older adults, general health and oral health were associated, although oral health impact was only associated with general health for those with more health problems, indicating that those in worse health suffer more impact from oral health problems. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 474-480. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci The aims of the study were to evaluate oral distress in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) compared with age- and sex-matched Norwegian normative data, to estimate the occurrence of oral symptoms in pSS, and to evaluate the impact of oral distress on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to assess HRQoL, and the Oral Health Impact Profile 14 (OHIP-14) was used to measure oral distress. Of the 246 pSS patients invited to participate in the study, 177 (72%) responded. Data were analysed for the female participants ( n = 163). Significant deviations from normative estimates were found in all OHIP-14 item results, and the findings indicated a high level of oral distress among the pSS patients. Health-related quality of life was decreased among pSS patients, with the largest deviations from normative estimates related to general health and role physical. The patients with high levels of oral distress scored significantly lower than patients with low levels of oral distress in five of the SF-36 subscales, indicating that oral conditions have a marked impact on general quality of life. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 211-218. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci There is emerging evidence that feedback techniques based on contingent electrical stimulation (CES) have an inhibitory effect on the electromyogram (EMG) activity of jaw-closing muscles and therefore could be useful in the management of sleep bruxism. This polysomnographic (PSG) study was designed to investigate the effect of CES on PSG parameters in subjects with self-reported bruxism. Fourteen subjects underwent a full PSG investigation in the laboratory for three consecutive nights - one night of adaptation, one night without CES, and one night with CES - in a randomized order. During all sessions the EMG activity was recorded by a portable feedback device from the temporalis muscle. An electrical pulse, which was adjusted to a moderate, but non-painful, intensity, was applied to subjects during the session with CES, if jaw-muscle activity was detected. The total sleep time, the number of micro-arousals per hour of sleep, the time spent in sleep stages 3 and 4 and in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and the number of periodic limb movements, were not influenced by CES. The number of EMG episodes per hour of sleep during the nights with and without CES was not significantly different. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 253-257. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci In the current in vitro study, the fracture stability of anterior crowns with zirconia cores of different designs was investigated after applying different veneering techniques. Four groups of zirconia cores ( n = 10 in each group) were produced using a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) process. Cores with a standard cervical design were veneered using the layering technique (CCL) or the press-over technique (CCP). Further cores were designed with a porcelain shoulder, where the cervical margin of the zirconia core was reduced by 1 mm. These cores were also veneered using the layering technique (PSL) or the press-over technique (PSP). All crowns were cemented onto metal teeth and loaded until fracture in a universal testing machine. Chipping or fracture of the core was found to occur for CCL at 919 ± 265 N (mean ± SD), for CCP at 798 ± 226 N, for PSL at 739 ± 184 N, and for PSP at 734 ± 209 N. did not show significant differences between the four groups. For CCL and CCP, fracture lines ran in a mesio-distal orientation. For PSL and PSP, fracture lines ran into the porcelain shoulder. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 232-240. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci The aim of this study was to investigate the bonding of dental adhesives to the dentinoenamel junction (DEJ) zone. Bonding of four adhesives [two etch-and-rinse adhesives (ERAs) and two self-etching adhesives (SEAs)] to enamel, dentin, and the DEJ zone was evaluated using a micro-shear test. Based on the measured bond strengths of dentin/enamel and on the area percentages of dentin in the DEJ zone, predicted bond strengths for the DEJ zone were calculated and compared with those measured. The DEJ zone was analyzed, using scanning electron microscopy, after conditioning, resin infiltration, and debonding. Regardless of the adhesive, bond strengths were significantly influenced by substrates, exhibiting the following order of bond strength (strongest to weakest): dentin > DEJ zone > enamel. The predicted values of the DEJ zone for the ERA groups were significantly higher than the measured values. Analysis of the ERA specimens using scanning electron microscopy showed distinct etching textures of enamel and dentin, which outlined the DEJ and increased the adhesive thickness at the enamel side of the DEJ. Those characteristics could not be detected in the SEA groups. The DEJ zone displayed bond properties that were stronger than enamel but weaker than dentin and therefore may be considered as transitional bond properties. Enamel/dentin within the DEJ zone might bond more weakly to ERAs than its counterpart of the bulk tissue. The presence of the DEJ in the bond area might compromise the bonding efficiency of ERAs. However, the effect of resin infiltration in cavitated lesions is unknown. Therefore, the aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate infiltration patterns of proximal caries lesions differing in International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) codes. Extracted human molars and premolars showing proximal caries lesions with and without cavitations (ICDAS codes 2-5) were etched with 15% hydrochloric acid gel and resin infiltrated according to the manufacturer's instructions. Three sections from each lesion were prepared and analyzed using a dual-fluorescence staining technique and confocal microscopy. The dimensions of the demineralized and cavitated lesions areas, as well as the resin-infiltrated parts within these lesions, were measured. The demineralized parts were infiltrated from 73% to 100% (median values) but the cavities were filled only negligibly (0-5%). Teeth that had an ICDAS code of 5 showed a significantly lower percentage infiltration/filling of lesions compared to teeth with ICDAS codes of 2 and 3. It was concluded that under in vitro conditions the tested infiltrant penetrates most parts of the demineralized enamel but is not capable of filling up cavities and therefore the efficacy of caries infiltration, particularly in lesions with larger cavitations, might be impaired. The sample consisted of 244 children, 6- to 7 yr of age, who had at least two teeth with dentine carious lesions. Before the first treatment session (Tx-1), in which one of the carious teeth was treated using one of the treatments, the level of dental anxiety was assessed using the Facial Image Scale (FIS). The child reported the intensity of pain experienced during the procedure using the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale. When conventional restorative treatment was used, more children needed local anaesthesia. Analyses excluding the data of children who had received local anaesthesia showed no treatment group effect on the Wong-Baker score, a FIS Tx-1 effect on the Wong-Baker score, and a statistically significant correlation between FIS Tx-1 and Wong-Baker scores. There was no significant difference in the pain levels of children treated using conventional restorative treatment, atraumatic restorative treatment or ultraconservative treatment. To analyze the antibacterial characteristics of this monomer in detail, the ability of high concentrations of unpolymerized MDPB to kill Streptococcus mutans in planktonic or biofilm forms within a short time-period of contact, and the inhibitory effects of low concentrations of MDPB on the metabolic function of S. mutans, were examined. High concentrations of MDPB showed effective killing of planktonic and biofilm S. mutans cells within 60 s, and complete killing was obtained by contact with 1,000 μg ml of MDPB for 60 s. At a concentration of 4-8 μg ml, MDPB demonstrated growth inhibition, inducing elongation of the lag phase and of the doubling time, when the bacterial number was low. Inhibition of the production of acid from S. mutans by 8 μg ml of MDPB may have been caused by the inhibition of lactate dehydrogenase activity. At high concentrations, MDPB is lethal to both planktonic and biofilm forms of S. mutans in a short time-period, and at low concentrations, MDPB inhibits metabolic enzymatic activity. In the condylectomy group, a unilateral condylectomy was performed on the right side of the mouse mandible. In the condylectomy + appliance group, a functional appliance was used to reposition the mandible after the unilateral condylectomy. All mice were killed 4 wk after surgery. Each mandible was then subjected to analyses of cortical bone mineral content (CRT_CNT), cortical bone density (CRT_DEN), and cortical bone area (CRT_A) by peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). The CRT_CNT, CRT_DEN, and CRT_A values were significantly lower in the condylectomized mandible (right side) than in the non-condylectomized mandible (left side). However, in the condylectomized animals in which a functional appliance was used, the CRT_CNT, CRT_DEN, and CRT_A values became higher than those in the mice treated with condylectomy alone. No significant differences were found in the CRT_CNT, CRT_DEN, and CRT_A between non-condylectomized (left side) mandibles, mandibles treated with condylectomy + functional appliance (right side), and control mandibles. It was thus shown that a functional appliance used to reposition the condylectomized mandible forward in a symmetric position induced improvement of the cortical bone in a mouse model in terms of cortical bone mineral content, density, and area. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 141-150. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci It has become increasingly recognized that groups of microorganisms interact within the subgingival plaque of adult subjects with periodontitis. It is much less clear, however, whether the consortia of microorganisms associated with periodontitis are different in early and more advanced cases of periodontitis. To investigate this point further, subgingival plaque was collected from six sites in 87 adolescents with periodontitis and 73 controls and the samples were analyzed for the detection of 18 microbial species using the DNA-DNA hybridization technique. Actinomyces oris accounted for the highest proportion of the flora and was more predominant among controls. Prevotella nigrescens, Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythia were present at higher levels among the subjects with periodontitis. Factor analyses identified one factor characterized by highly positive loadings for T. forsythia, Campylobacter rectus, P. gingivalis, P. intermedia, P. nigrescens, Parvimonas micra, and Treponema denticola, and another factor characterized by highly positive loadings of A. oris, Capnocytophaga ochracea, Eikenella corrodens, Streptococcus intermedius, Selenomonas noxia, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Veillonella parvula. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Streptococcus mutans did not load on any of the two factors, while Fusobacterium nucleatum loaded on both. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 169-174. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci The study aimed to rank the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49) items by relevance to temporomandibular disorders (TMD). A modified version of the OHIP-49 was completed by 110 patients with TMD and by age- and gender-matched TMD-free individuals. Patients were diagnosed using the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) for TMD. The modified OHIP included a reference to the 'jaw' and a 1-month reference period. The difference in item prevalence for problems reported fairly/very often (FOVO) between the two groups was calculated for each OHIP item. The FOVO prevalence differences were ranked to reveal the most relevant problems for TMD. Patients' total OHIP scores were higher (60.6, SD = 31.6) than those of controls (17.1, SD = 18.1). Patients scored higher on all items, with 41 items showing a statistically significant difference between the patient score and the control score. The patient-control difference in FOVO item prevalence varied considerably between different items, ranging from 1 to 67%. Substantial differences were noted between patients and controls for a number of specific items, including those relating to pain and physical impact. Smaller differences across most items were also noted, even those not expected to have an impact. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 121-127. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal-dominant neuro-cutaneous-skeletal syndrome. Neurofibromatosis type 1 is one of the Rasopathies, and at the cellular level NF1 results in a hyperactive Ras pathway. In the current investigation, our aim was to study lateral skull X-rays (cephalograms) to assess NF1-related craniofacial morphology. A total of 85 Finnish patients with NF1, including four patients with plexiform neurofibroma of the 5th cranial nerve, and their age- and gender-matched controls, were enrolled in the study. The results showed that patients with NF1 typically had a short mandible, maxilla, and cranial base compared with healthy controls, irrespective of age, but the results were statistically significant only in adults. The length of the mandible, the maxilla and the cranial base correlated with the height of patients under 19 yr of age, but this correlation was absent in adult patients. Thus, a tall adult patient with NF1 may have short jaws and a short cranial base. In conclusion, the NF1 gene apparently influences the growth of craniofacial bones, thus contributing to the craniofacial morphology in NF1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 55-60. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci We studied the association between dental fear and anxiety or depressive disorders, as well as the comorbidity of dental fear with anxiety and depressive disorders, controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, dental attendance, and dental health. Nationally representative data on Finnish adults, ≥ 30 yr of age ( n = 5,953), were gathered through interviews and clinical examination. Dental fear was measured using the question: 'How afraid are you of visiting a dentist?' Anxiety and/or depressive disorders were assessed using a standardized structured psychiatric interview according to criteria presented in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th edition) (DSM-IV).Those with depressive disorders, generalized anxiety disorder or social phobia more commonly reported high dental fear than did those without these disorders. When age, gender, education, dental attendance, and the number of decayed, missing, and restored teeth were considered, those with generalized anxiety disorder were more likely to have high dental fear than were participants with neither anxiety nor depressive disorders. The comorbidity of depressive and anxiety disorders also remained statistically significantly associated with dental fear; those with both depressive and anxiety disorders were more likely to have high dental fear than were those without these disorders. This may affect the demineralization ability and the infiltration of self-etch adhesives, thus reducing the efficacy of bonding to caries-affected dentin. This study evaluated the adhesion of a two-step self-etching adhesive to normal and caries-affected dentin after pretreatment with mildly acidic hypochlorous acid (HOCl) solutions. We used a microtensile bond strength (μTBS) test to compare the μTBS of Clearfil SE Bond to either caries-affected dentin or to normal dentin, after pretreatment for 5 s with one of three solutions (806 mM NaOCl, or 0.95 or 1.91 mM HOCl). The μTBS of the self-etch adhesive was significantly lower to caries-affected dentin than to normal dentin. Pretreatment with 0.95 mM HOCl improved the μTBS of the self-etch adhesive to caries-affected dentin, but there was no significant difference compared with normal dentin. On the other hand, pretreatment with 806 mM NaOCl or 1.91 mM HOCl did not demonstrate a significant improvement in the μTBS to caries-affected dentin. A novel, video-based paradigm using cross-phobic video stimulation was validated based on subjective and autonomic responses. Forty subjects were stratified according to dental anxiety as measured by the Dental Fear Survey (DFS) using a median-split procedure (high-DFS and low-DFS groups). Anxiety stimuli comprised dental-anxiety scenes and non-dental-anxiety control scenes (snake stimuli). Neutral scenes were tailored to each anxiety stimulus. Dental, but not snake, stimuli were rated as more anxiety provoking only in the high-DFS group. Elevated skin-conductance amplitudes were observed in the high-DFS group for dental anxiety vs. neutral videos, but not for snake anxiety vs. neutral videos. State and trait anxiety and autonomic reactivity were correlated according to expectations. Using cross-phobic video stimulation, it was demonstrated that phobogenic reactions in dental anxiety are specific to the respective stimulus material and do not generalize to other non-dental-anxiety control conditions. The validation of the paradigm may support and stimulate future research on the characterization of dental anxiety on different response systems, including its underlying neural substrates. Therefore, the aim of this study was to perform an overall assessment of orofacial function and oral health in patients, and to compare the findings with matched control subjects. Fifteen outpatients (nine women and six men, 61-82 yr of age; Hoehn & Yahr Stages 2-4; and with motor impairment ranging from 17 to 61 according to the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, Objective Motor Part III) were examined in their 'on' state together with 15 age- and gender-matched controls. Orofacial function and oral health were assessed using the Nordic Orofacial Test, masticatory ability, performance and efficiency, oral stereognosis, jaw opening, jaw muscle tenderness, the Oral Health Impact Profile-49, number of natural teeth, and oral hygiene. Orofacial dysfunction was more prevalent, mastication and jaw opening poorer, and impact of oral health on daily life more negative, in patients with PD than in controls. The results indicate that mastication and orofacial function are impaired in moderate to advanced PD, and with progression of the disease both orofacial and dental problems become more marked. It is suggested that greater awareness of the special needs in PD patients and frequent dental visits are desirable to prevent dental diseases and decay and to support masticatory function. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 73-78. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci The influence of the administration method used to collect oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) data is largely unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether OHRQoL information obtained using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) differed with different methods of collection (personal interview, via telephone or as a self-administered questionnaire). The OHRQoL was measured using the German version of the OHIP. The instrument was administered to each of 42 patients using three different methods, in a randomized order, about 1 wk apart. The test-retest reliability coefficient for the repeated OHIP assessment across the three methods of administration, and the magnitude of the variance component for administration method, were determined, characterizing the degree of OHIP score variation that is caused by this factor. Whereas OHIP mean score differences of 3.9 points were present between administration methods, the reliability coefficient of 0.90 (95% CI, 0.85-0.95) indicated that 90% of the OHIP score variation was caused by differences between subjects (and not by the administration method or measurement error). The variance component for administration method explained 0.5% of the OHIP score variation. In conclusion, the method of administration (personal interview, telephone interview or self-administered questionnaire) did not influence substantially OHIP scores in prosthodontic patients. Type 1 diabetes results in bone remodeling, suggesting that this disease might affect orthodontic tooth movement. The present study investigated the effects of the diabetic state on orthodontic tooth movement. An orthodontic appliance was placed in normoglycemic (NG), streptozotocin-induced diabetes (DB), and insulin-treated DB (IT) C57BL6/J mice. Histomorphometric analysis and quantitative PCR of periodontium were performed. The DB mice exhibited greater orthodontic tooth movement and had a higher number of tartrate-resistant acid phosphate (TRAP) -positive osteoclasts than NG mice. This was associated with increased expression of factors involved in osteoclast activity and recruitment ( Rankl, Csf1, Ccl2, Ccl5, and Tnfa) in DB mice. The expression of osteoblastic markers ( Runx2, Ocn, Col1, and Alp) was decreased in DB mice. Reversal of the diabetic state by insulin treatment resulted in morphological findings similar to those of NG mice. These results suggest that the diabetic state up-regulates osteoclast migration and activity and down-regulates osteoblast differentiation, resulting in greater orthodontic tooth movement. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 48-54. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci The objectives of this study were to examine: (i) the association between toothbrushing frequency and educational achievement; (ii) the influence of social status and career aspiration on this association; and (iii) whether educational achievement and career aspiration explain the gender difference in oral hygiene behaviours in Iranian adolescents in Mashhad. The sample population was sixth-grade adolescents in Mashhad, Iran. Participants completed a 37-item questionnaire with questions on socio-demographic variables, frequency of toothbrushing, educational achievement, and their career aspiration. The associations between toothbrushing frequency and other study-outcome variables were tested using binary logistic regression. The association between toothbrushing frequency and educational achievement was significant only after adjusting for the father's level of education and the child's career aspiration. Toothbrushing frequency was highly significantly associated with gender, and this association remained unaltered after adjusting for educational achievement and career aspiration. Career aspiration and toothbrushing frequency were significantly associated. In conclusion, educational achievement was not an independent indicator of reported toothbrushing frequency in Iranian adolescents in Mashhad. Father's educational level and child's career aspiration mediated the association between toothbrushing frequency and educational achievement. Comparison of cerebral activity during teeth clenching and fist clenching: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study. Eur J Oral Sci 2010; 118: 635-641. © 2010 Eur J Oral Sci Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we compared the cerebral activity during bilateral light fist-clenching and light-teeth clenching to provide more information on the central processing mechanisms underlying awake bruxism. Fourteen subjects participated in our study. Statistical comparisons were used to identify brain regions with significant activation in the subtraction of light fist clenching and light teeth clenching activity minus baseline. Participants also evaluated the perceived effort of clenching for each task, using a visual analogue scale of 0-100, after fMRI was performed. Bilateral light fist-clenching significantly activated the bilateral sensorimotor cortex, while light teeth-clenching was significantly associated with activation of the bilateral sensorimotor cortex, supplementary motor area, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and posterior parietal cortex. The VAS scores for fist clenching and teeth clenching were not significantly different. As light teeth-clenching activates a more extensive cortical network compared with light fist-clenching, we suggest that the teeth clenching may induce a more complex cerebral activity compared with the performance of a hand motor task. Eur J Oral Sci 2010; 118: 610-617. © 2010 Eur J Oral Sci The effects of casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium fluoride phosphate (CPP-ACFP) paste vs. control paste on the remineralization of white spot caries lesions and on plaque composition were tested in a double-blind prospective randomized clinical trial. Fifty-four orthodontic patients, with multiple white spot lesions observed upon the removal of fixed appliances, were followed up for 3 months. Subjects were included and randomly assigned to either CPP-ACFP paste or control paste, for use supplementary to their normal oral hygiene. Caries regression was assessed on quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) images captured directly after debonding and 6 and 12 wk thereafter. The total counts and proportions of aciduric bacteria, Streptococcus mutans, and Lactobacillus spp. were measured in plaque samples obtained just before debonding, and 6 and 12 wk afterwards. A significant decrease in fluorescence loss was found with respect to baseline for both groups and no difference was found between groups. The size of the lesion area did not change significantly over time or between the groups. The percentages of aciduric bacteria and of S. mutans decreased from 47.4 to 38.1% and from 9.6 to 6.6%, respectively. No differences were found between groups. Suppressive effect of the antimicrobial peptide LL-37 on expression of IL-6, IL-8 and CXCL10 induced by Porphyromonas gingivalis cells and extracts in human gingival fibroblasts. Eur J Oral Sci 2010; 118: 574-581. © 2010 Eur J Oral Sci Porphyromonas gingivalis is a major periodontogenic bacterium and possesses immunostimulatory components, such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and fimbriae. The host antimicrobial peptide, LL-37, suppresses proinflammatory responses of immune cells but its effect on human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) is not known. In this study, we assessed the effect of LL-37 on the proinflammatory responses of HGFs stimulated with P. gingivalis cells and their components. Live P. gingivalis cells did not induce proinflammatory responses of HGFs, and LL-37 did not alter these responses. However, LL-37 was able to suppress the killed P. gingivalis cell-induced secretion of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8. LL-37 also suppressed the expression of IL6, IL8, and CXCL10 genes that was induced by P. gingivalis components, including phenol-water extracts, lipid A, and fimbriae, and the induction of phosphorylation of p38 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) by P. gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (LPS). CAMP was found to be expressed in oral epithelial cells but not in HGFs, despite stimulation with P. gingivalis components. Therefore, LL-37 can exert a suppressive effect on P. gingivalis-induced proinflammatory responses of HGFs in a paracrine manner, suggesting that excess inflammatory responses to P. gingivalis in the gingival tissue are suppressed by LL-37 in vivo. After the drink is swallowed, the pH rises to baseline values but this process can take several minutes. Few techniques can quantify enamel erosion at timescales representative of single drinks. The objective of this study was to compare human and bovine erosion over acid-exposure times of 2 s to 1 h. Human and bovine enamel softening was compared in vitro using nanoindentation (2-60 s of exposure to acid) and tissue loss was compared using optical profilometry (1-60 min of exposure to acid). Nanoindentation revealed statistically significant softening after 2 s (human) and 5 s (bovine); there were no significant differences in hardness reduction for the two tissues at any time-point. Profilometry demonstrated statistically significant tissue loss after 20 min (human) and 10 min (bovine); bovine tissue loss progressed 30% faster than human tissue loss. These results support the use of bovine enamel as a substitute for human enamel in erosion studies, with the understanding that for moderate exposure times bovine enamel erodes 30% faster than human enamel. The aim of this study was to investigate if enamel organs and ameloblast-derived cells express serotonin receptors that are affected by peripherally circulating serotonin or fluoxetine. Using RT-PCR and western blot analysis we found that enamel organs from 3-d-old mice and ameloblast-like cells (LS8 cells) express functional serotonin receptors, the rate-limiting enzyme in serotonin synthesis (Thp1), as well as the serotonin transporter (5HTT), indicating that enamel organs and ameloblasts are able to respond to serotonin and regulate serotonin availability. Fluoxetine and serotonin enhanced the alkaline phosphatase activity in the cell culture medium from cultured LS8 cells, whereas the expression of enamelin ( Enam), amelogenin ( Amel), and matrix metalloproteinase-20 ( MMP-20) were all significantly down-regulated. The secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1), and interferon-inducible protein 10 (IP-10) was also reduced compared with controls. In conclusion, enamel organs and ameloblast-like cells express functional serotonin receptors. However, pulpal changes following extensive root resorption after orthodontic tooth movement have not been studied in detail. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate inflammatory changes, both in the dental pulp and in the compressed PDL, after experimentally induced extensive root resorption. Extensive root resorption was induced in rats by the activation and re-activation of orthodontic force, with a short intervening period of no force application. The distribution of immune cells, nerve fibres and blood vessels was studied immunohistochemically using antibodies against CD68-immunoreactive (IR) cells, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II Ia-expressing cells, CD43-IR cells, protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5), and laminin. In the compressed PDL of experimental first molars, significantly increased density of CD68-IR cells and MHC class II Ia-expressing cells were found, whereas the density of CD43-IR cells were unchanged when compared with control second molars. In the compressed PDL, there was an increased density of blood vessels, but no sprouting of nerve fibres. In the dental pulp, however, no increased density of immune cells or sprouting of nerve fibres was recorded. In conclusion, inflammation after extensive root resorption was confined to the compressed PDL, whereas the dental pulp was unaffected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eur J Oral Sci 2010; 118: 618-625. © 2010 Eur J Oral Sci The influence of child and parental migration background on the risk of approximal caries increment in Swedish adolescents was investigated. This retrospective longitudinal register-based cohort study included all 13-yr-old adolescents ( n = 18,142) who were resident in the County of Stockholm, Sweden, in 2000, and followed them up to 19 yr of age. At follow-up, 15,538 subjects were examined. Caries data [decayed, missing, and filled teeth/surfaces (DMFT/S)], were collected from a dental database. Socio-demographic determinants were collected from Swedish National Registers. After adjustments for socio-demographic confounders, logistic regression analysis revealed that adolescents with foreign-born parents, irrespective of whether the child was born in Sweden or abroad, exhibited a significantly elevated risk for approximal caries increment (DMFSa > 0), and developed, on average, 0.53 and 1.14 more approximal caries lesions, respectively, compared with their counterparts with Swedish-born parents. Furthermore, adolescents born in eastern Europe exhibited an increased risk for approximal caries increment (DMFSa > 0) and developed, on average, 1.06 more approximal caries lesions compared with Swedish-born adolescents. In conclusion, parental migration background must be considered as a risk factor for caries development during adolescence, irrespective of whether or not the adolescent was born in Sweden. Employees of five companies were offered a clinical full-mouth examination. Oral health-related quality of life was measured with the German version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) and summarized as additive scores (OHIP-ADD) and as prevalence of negative impacts (OHIP-SC). Two logistic regression models were developed for the odds of increased scores of the target variables OHIP-ADD and OHIP-SC. The target variables were dichotomized, and for the OHIP-ADD, the cut-off point for having impaired OHRQoL was heuristically defined as OHIP-ADD > 34. For the OHIP-SC, the corresponding threshold was OHIP-SC > 0. In the model for the OHIP-ADD, female gender, impaired aesthetics, few posterior occluding pairs, and painful masticatory muscles proved to be significant independent variables. For the OHIP-SC, female gender, impaired aesthetics, painful masticatory muscles, joint sounds, missing mandibular teeth, and carious teeth were significant. This cross-sectional study showed that within the models for both OHIP-ADD and OHIP-SC the high-risk person for impaired OHRQoL is a woman with impaired aesthetics and painful masticatory muscles.
