In cut-to-length logging, the harvester operator adjusts the bucking in accordance with visible defects on processed stems. Some of the defects, such as a sweep on the bottom of the stem, decrease the yield and quality of sawn products and are difficult for the operator to notice. Detecting the defects with improved sensors would support the operator in his qualitative decision-making and increase value recovery of logging. Predicting the maximum bow height of the bottom log in Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) with log end face image and stem taper was investigated with two modelling approaches. A total of 101 stems were selected from five clear-cut stands in southern Finland. The stems were crosscut and taper measured, and the butt ends of the bottom logs were photographed. The stem diameter, out-of-roundness, and pith eccentricity were measured from the images while the max. bow height was measured by a 3D log scanner at a sawmill. The bottom logs with an eccentric pith had higher max. bow height. In addition, a highly conical bottom part of the stem was more common on the bottom logs with a large max. bow height. Applying both log end face image and stem taper measurements gave the best model fit and detection accuracy (76%) for bottom logs with a large max. bow height. The results indicate that the log end face image and stem taper measurements can be utilised to aid harvester operator in deciding an optimised length for logs according to the bow height. Modelling stem taper and volume is crucial in many forest management and planning systems. Taper models are used for diameter prediction at any location along the stem of a sample tree. Furthermore, taper models are flexible means to provide information on the stem volume and assortment structure of a forest stand or other management units. Usually, taper functions are mean functions of multiple linear or nonlinear regression models with diameter at breast height and tree height as predictor variables. In large-scale inventories, an upper diameter is often considered as an additional predictor variable to improve the reliability of taper and volume predictions. Most studies on stem taper focus on accurately modelling the mean function; the error structure of the regression model is neglected or treated as secondary. We present a semi-parametric linear mixed model where the population mean diameter at an arbitrary stem location is a smooth function of relative height. Observed tree-individual diameter deviations from the population mean are assumed to be realizations of a smooth Gaussian process with the covariance depending on the sampled diameter locations. In addition to the smooth random deviation from the population average, we consider independent zero mean residual errors in order to describe the deviations of the observed diameter measurements from the tree-individual smooth stem taper. The smooth model components are approximated by cubic spline functions with a B-spline basis and a small number of knots. The B-spline coefficients of the population mean function are treated as fixed effects, whereas coefficients of the smooth tree-individual deviation are modelled as random effects with zero mean and a symmetric positive definite covariance matrix. The taper of a tree is predicted using an arbitrary number of diameter and corresponding height measurements at arbitrary positions along the stem to calibrate the tree-individual random deviation from the population mean estimated by the fixed effects. This allows a flexible application of the method in practice. Volume predictions are calculated as the integral over cross-sectional areas estimated from the calibrated taper curve. Approximate estimators for the mean squared errors of volume estimates are provided. If the tree height is estimated or measured with error, we use the “law of total expectation and variance” to derive approximate diameter and volume predictions with associated confidence and prediction intervals. We simplified Kozak’s taper model by setting the inflection point at 1.3 m (dbh) without losing accuracy and precision. The simplification was required to facilitate the estimation of the covariance parameters when using a mixed-effects method. This method was necessary to take into account the correlation among multiple diameter measurements on an individual stem. The simple stem taper model was fitted to an extended data set collected across the province of Quebec, Canada. Comparison of the predicted stem taper and the derived stem volume with those obtained using existing models showed a comparable predictive power for the simple model. Including a prediction of the tree random effects based on supplementary diameter measurements of the bole improves the predictive ability of the model around the extra diameter observation. This study examined the combined effect of 19-years of nitrogen fertilisation and irrigation on the basic density along the stems of Pinus radiata (D.Don). The sample trees came from two treatments in the Biology of Forest Growth experiment: the control (C no treatment) and the irrigated and liquid fertilised (IL irrigated from age 10 to 29, liquid fertilised from ages 10 to 17). The mean basic density at breast height in the IL trees was significantly less ( P < 0.05) than the C trees (430 and 471 kg m−3, respectively). However, the mean density of the entire bole was not significantly different. Basic density decreased with height, with the density near the tips of the trees being only 80% of the density at breast height for both treatments. The relative rate of the decrease was different between treatments. The density of the C trees decreased steadily with height while the IL trees held a relatively constant density for about half their total height. The results show the importance sampling at several different heights when considering the effects of various treatments on wood basic density in Pinus radiata. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
